Running back Dexter Williams, wide receiver Kevin Stepherson, linebacker Tre’Von Coney, cornerback Asthon White, and safety Max Redfield were charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and three of them — Redfield, Stepherson, and Williams — charged with possession of a handgun without a license.
A car driven by White was pulled over the speeding and an improper taillight and the officer noticed the smell of marijuana, which ultimately led to the arrests.
The other player arrested, cornerback Devin Butler, is out with a foot injury that will sideline him for the Texas game. He was charged with battery of a police officer and resisting a police officer after his arrest at a local nightclub.
Of the five players who were expected to play in the opener, the loss of Redfield could loom the largest for the Fighting Irish, as the senior was commended by his teammates and coaches for his athleticism and outstanding fall camp just days ago.
With 64 tackles last season, Redfield was set to be the team’s leading returning tackler. He also recorded one interception and three pass break ups in his second season as a starter.
However, Coney, Stepherson, and Williams were also all expected to play against the Longhorns in 15 days. Wide receiver in particular is an area without a lot of returning depth for Notre Dame.
All six players could face now face suspensions.
