i know i am in the minority here but i think georgia beats OK ST IN WEEK ONE. the reason is that the coaching is so much better for UGA, the lines of scrimmage are far better, the recruiting classes over the last 5 years lean in UGA's favor big time, mike gundy is a dumbass, and the most important is the players from the south are far better than the rest of the USA. just look at the NFL draft from the last few years. don't even give me any lip about how good the skill players from OK ST are. the same argument was made when they came to athens and got spanked. GA wins this game without stafford and moreno, no matter what the public and vegas says. players in the big 12 are just not as tough as the SEC players, mainly on the lines of scrimmage. take UGA up to -7, and you will be counting your winnings about 7pm eastern time. if by some chance they lose, i will eat crow, but that will most likely not happen. in my opinion UGA +3 is a gift from vegas so you guys treat it as a free winner for you. happy days ahead and i hope y'all have a profitable season in front of you.

Georgia's offense will surprise people. Cox is steady and a control passer. He can't hit the 50 yarder like Stafford, but may be better on short routes and reading when a receiver is open. He's always been a winner and I think he continues to be. RB will step down this year, but O line will be better. I don't see a lot of fall off on an average yd per carry basis.

As for OK State running up 40+, they'll get a bunch, but you have to have the ball a lot longer than I think they will to score that many. I'll just watch and enjoy. Don't want to pick this as a first week bet. Too much potential on both sides.

OK State will roll easily at home.  Mike Gundy is an offensive coach and trust me Georgia hasnt seen an offense as explosive as the Cowboys.  Zac will throw for over 400 yards and Gundy will put 8 in the box on defense.

OK 45

GA 10

neither had > fla seen an offense "like OU"......neither had ol miss seen one "like T Tech"......okie st couldn't run on THE DUCKS....and got whipped physically.....(observed by yours truly......admitted by players / Gundy after game )

I think we are all forgetting that Ok St defense has be rather pathetic....i highly doubt they hold Georgia or any team to 10 points this year....

Ok St will definitely score but their defense gives up points just as quickly as their offense scores them.

Cowboys last 4 games of the season plus the bowl, they gave up an average of 39 points a game! Granted some of those were against quality teams (Oregon, Tx Tech & Oklahoma) but over that same time frame they were only scoring 36 points a game. Add to that a new DC, half of the D-Line gone and nearly an entirely new secondary. I'm not saying they can't win, but I'm pretty sure Ga will find a way to score (even with all new skill position players) against that sieve they call a defense!

I agree that OK State's defense has some issues the new D-cordinator will have to iron out but they will facing a team that lost their starting QB and RB.  Georgia is going to need at least 4 weeks to gel and build chemistry.  I see Mike Gundy loading the box and forcing Joe Cox to make plays.

I agree with a lot of what you've posted...just one problem.  OSU is to be jacked for this game.  On a scale of 1 to 10, the team and the crowd will be pegged at a 10.  UGA will roll into Stillwater wondering where the hell they are and why the hell they have to play this team in the middle of nowhere.  They could be down 14 zipper before they realize they've got their hands full.  Don't let last season's outcome fog your judgement on this one.

The Over is going to be worth a look.

Gundy can put 12 to 15 guys in the box and Georgia still might run for 200+.  OK State's defense is basically a Junior College All Star team, plus one or two legit D1 defenders.
anakinsky36 says:

This is the dumbest statement I've read since I've been posting on Covers.  The point in having to put 8 men in the tackling box is to make up for a lack of talent on the defensive line.
thorpe says:
07/31/09 11:48PM

I'm saying OK State's tackling is so bad they couldn't stop Georgia even if they had extra defenders on the field.  What did you think I was saying?
TheGarfather says:
08/01/09 03:03AM
The OSU defense faced 525 pass attempts and managed to only come up with 15 sacks.  Its almost hard to believe.

The only player on the Cowboy's defense that an NFL team would even watch film on would be Perrish Cox, but that has a lot to do with him being a great return man as well.

playing on turf gives Okla St their best chance to beat UGA, we already saw what would happen if they played on grass - 14 pts and a whirlpool needed, turf may allow OSU to look a little quicker on both sides

The Over might be a good play f the total is 63.5 or less

agree with Thorpe about the Cowboys Defense being a joke ....

Trying to "work" around the  Schedule

not worried about georgia's backs but the QB is the key like you said Nos.. Gotta get the ball to Green!!!

I think both teams score 31+ with ease ...

This game might turnout like LY's Cotton Bowl (Mississppi 47  Texas tech 34)

it's funny reading a thread that starts with, "i'm in the minority," followed by a herd of sheep agreeing with the UGA pick...

and then i get to a capper i respect, and he of course knows otherwise...

early season non-conf college football is largely about having an offense that knows how to score points, and has a lot of experience doing that...

Georgia has no shot of staying in this game... they can not and will not keep up with the scoring that OK St can throw at them...

i have gone over this game in my head so many times... it is never even a contest... OSU wins by at least 2 TDs... most likely 3 or 4... just not a close game at all...

Ice4Blood says:
08/02/09 05:07AM

also agree with this... minimum of 38 for Ok St... UGA probably good for 21 at least... and that would be the low end projection...

45-28 looks more like it...

how pissed is boone pickens going to be if they lose this game? he wanted a big opponent to open the stadium that he built. i bet that stadium is really nice: scorebord in HD, etc, i will post again after practice starts on aug-4, to let you know how the defense looks, qb's and rb's. if they look anything like they they did in the spring game, this game is a no play, but i still believe what i said earlier. Ealy is supposed to be a great rb recruit, but i am told right now he is more in love with his you tube highlight videos. he will need to get over that because he is not going to run over people like that in the sec. players can actually tackle on this level. i don't agree with ice, but that is what the forum is all about for everyone to get together and discuss different points of view.

...here's both teams spring report, who looks ready?

Ok.st.

April 18 – The Orange beat the White 20-15 thanks to a trick play. RB Keith Toston took a pitch and threw a 42-yard scoring pass to TE Justin Horton, but the White team had its moments highlighted by an interception return for a score from LB Donald Booker. The quarterback play was mediocre with backup Alex Cate completing 10-of-19 passes for 87 yards for the Orange team, while Brandon Weeden closed out a great spring by completing 15-of-25 passes for 102 yards. While star WR Dez Bryant didn’t play with an injured knee healing up, starting QB Zac Robinson was fine for his three series of action leading his team to a scoring drive capped off by a ten-yard Toston touchdown run.

Georgia
April 11 - There were too many dropped passes and only three field goals before a 20-yard Carlton Thomas touchdown run in the final few seconds to lead the Red team to a 13-3 win over the Black, but the overall scrimmage was promising. The defense was tremendous with Marcus Washington and Justin Houston each putting on a show with three sacks each. With Matthew Stafford on the sidelines offering advice, new starting quarterback Joe Cox was decent completing 9-of-16 passes for 105 yards while backup Logan Gray completing 9-of-13 passes for 91 yards.

Spring game results are almost as useless as the scouting reports now being published on 9th and 10th grade high school prospects.

The only thing I have really come to think about this game, is I don't know. So, with everything we have, why would you really bet this game? Yes, maybe the boys get up by a lot. Then, again, they migth not be able to del with the speed of UGA. This is a great game to really watch, and find out what you want to do with these teams this yr.

Just my opinion, but I can agree with both sides here, and maybe its just what I do in college bball, but why? Its not like this is a bowl game and "you have to bet it" cause its the one game thats one. Yes, I knwo you should never bet on that reason, but I can at leats admit I do this, and I know most of you do too.

Just my opinion, I think some others are getting this idea as well

Georgia's Offense--Last year, Georgia’s offense figured to be as dynamic as any in the country, but a series of injuries decimated the line and Richt was forced to employ a lineup featuring three freshmen and two sophomores. This year, Georgia’s offensive line is healthy, experienced and deep. The line is mature, the quarterback’s mature, so there’ll be nothing from a schematic point of view that should hold them back. Having gone through the gauntlet of an SEC season last year, freshmen Cordy Glenn, Justin Anderson and Ben Jones made immense strides. Clint Boling figured to be a solid contributor on last year’s line, but after injuries to Vince Vance and Trinton Sturdivant, he blossomed into a leader. Add a healthy dose of rehabilitation to the numerous injured players, and suddenly this year’s line no longer resembles the patchwork unit Richt employed last season. Having that many guys with playing experience that know what they’re doing will prove to be invaluable in the run game and protecting QB Joe Cox. Strudivant’s knee is back to full health, and he appears to have a lock on the starting left tackle job. Boling slides from the left side to the right. Jones, who was one of Georgia’s most impressive freshmen last season, will be the starting center. Now we all know that Joe Cox won't post the numbers that Matthew Stafford did last fall, but he'll have a solid campaign and help A.J. Green reach his preseason goal of surpassing the 1,000-yard mark in receiving yards.

Georgia's Defense--What can you say? We all know what SEC Defenses are made of and we all know what OSU will be facing here in this game. Even with the high-powered Offense OSU will be bringing, especially being at home and being all fired up, I just cannot see them being able to put up 35 or 40 points like a lot of people are thinking. Marcus Washington's return from shoulder surgery is overlooked by a lot of folks but now that he's 100 percent, the senior will prove to be one of the best run-stoppers on the team. Bryan Evans has finally found a home at free safety. Although he's probably not the hitter fans think of when it comes to this position for the Dawgs, Evans' speed and athleticism will probably allow him to lead the Bulldogs in interceptions this fall.

OSU Offense--Hey, we know that OSU has a high-powered Offense and are going to be tough, especially against teams in their conference. We are talking about an SEC Defense in this matchup though. OSU now must replace two graduated starters in David Washington and Steve Denning who had a combined 63 starts at the guard position last season. The current depth chart has sophomore Jonathan Rush at left guard and fifth-year senior Noah Franklin at right guard. The Georgia opener will provide a difficult challenge for two new Cowboy linemen. And who will step up to help out Bryant at wide receiver? Other than Bryant, no returning wide receiver had more than three receptions last season. The Cowboys also will be breaking in a new tight end with the loss of Pettigrew and his 42 receptions.

OSU Defense--Can OSU's defense pressure opposing quarterbacks without relying heavily on blitzes? With only 15 sacks last season, OSU had the Big 12's weakest pass rush. Can starting ends Jamie Blatnick and Ugo Chinasa develop into impact players? Can Richetti Jones finally become a force? Against OSU last season, Texas' Colt McCoy, Oklahoma's Sam Bradford and Texas Tech's Graham Harrell and Taylor Potts combined to complete 78 percent of their passes for 1,277 yards and 13 touchdowns. On 144 pass attempts, they were intercepted only once. Was OSU guilty of lousy coverage? For the most part, no. The primary problem was an inability to generate pressure in the pass pocket. If his rhythm is not disrupted, Georgia's Joe Cox is capable of hurting OSU with 15-yard throws all day long. The secondary was torched often last season - 267.7 yards per game - but too often, opposing wide receivers had time to get open because the lack of a pass rush enabled opposing quarterbacks to get comfortable in the pocket. OSU allowed 405.5 yards per game last season.

I say all that to say this...I am a Georgia fan but will probably stay away from this game. I'm just throwing out a few things on this game that are sometimes easy to overlook. I can honestly see the game going either way but one thing I definately can't see is it being a complete blowout in OSU's favor. GL to everyone in whichever way you decide to wager.

notes from practice. the defense looks very improved but the offense is not that explosive, so that makes me think that i like the under here. they have been working the defense real hard and they have to even run extra after practice and those guys are in real good physical shape now. there is a lot of pressure for them to perform because if they don't, martinez is going to get fired. ga will not have an explosive offense in the 1st game, so they will probably be clock eaters. i do think the defense can slow ok st down a bit. the play for me is under 64 but i have seen it at 63.5. don't know what my man has it at yet though. good luck to everyone.

i agree the under is the play here. the defense has been getting worked real hard this offseason. the offense will not be that explosive, ben jones (center) got hurt pretty good the other day on the last play in practice. (got his ankle rolled) and was yelling real loud and had to get a cart to roll him off the field. if the defense doesn't improve, then martinez gets fired, they will be going all out. they even make them run extra after practice each day. ga will probably lose the game but the total doesn't go over 64. forget caleb king, no work ethic, biggest bust on hype ga has gotten recently. samuel will see a lot of the field. plus zac r has that hamstring issue, how will that affect him? we will find out.

My numbers show Ok St -4, Ok St stronger stability and power.  This s a MAJOR credibility game for the Cowboys here to open the season, this is why they are fav and the amazig RETURNING offense.  My only concern is the 1st year deffensive coordinator Bill Young.  I think there are other profitable bets to take, this line is right on the money.  And dont think for one minute that UGA +3 is a gift.  gl

It seems like everyone is on the over, I see the exact opposite for a lot of the reasons people picked sides for. First and foremost I would avoid this game as their will be much easier sides to pick in week 1. But the under looks good because OK S offense is a lot better so UGA will pound the ball and control the clock on offense. And like a lot of ppl stated UGA has one of the best defenses in the nation so i look for them not to shut down OSU but contain them a little, the over will probably be set too high looks like an easy under to me

plus I do not see Richt putting a lot of pressure on a qb in his first start in awhile, so they should run even more
