When rooting against the team you bet makes sense

Like the idiot that I am, I took the Jets late in the week which meant I got Gang Green at +7.5 instead of +9.5. The Patriots were up 27-21 late in the fourth quarter and picking up first downs at will on the ground.

New England was already in comfortable field goal range (ball inside the 20) when it came down to a 3rd and 2 with under two minutes to play. The Jets only had one timeout left so if the Pats picked up the 1st down they could just run out the clock.

But New York stuffed BenJarvis-Green Ellis’ run up the gut – the only time it did all second half – called a timeout and New England kicked a field goal to make it 30-21.

Well, I sure-as shit knew Dirty Sanchez wasn’t going to take the Jets down the field for a score with no clock stoppages and less than 1:30 left. My cover was gone and it was all because the team I bet on did something good.

I thought this was an abnormal situation, rooting against your underdog bet from fighting it out until the very end, when just laying down and accepting defeat would cover the spread.

Help me mourn my loss by sharing some similar spots you’ve found yourselves in, in the past.

A similar spot Ashton, try any given Sunday. Enough said. Keep up the good work.

I will bet against my team in a heartbeat if i think its a good wager, but will still root for them during the game. I'm crazy like that.

Ashton,

This is like when you have a +4.5 dog in college football and suddenly they line up to kick a game-tying field goal at the end. You've rooted for them all day, but now you are PRAYING that they miss this thing so you don't risk an overtime cover by the chalk. I find myself doing this all the time.

@Josh_Nagel - you got it man. Weird situation. Funny how we can jump sides in the middle of a game like that.

HA. Hilarious, and it happens all the time. I'm a NC State grad, and had Georgia Tech -11 against my pitiful Wolfpack a few weeks ago. The Yellow Jackets have it in the bag with less than a minute left, and I'm already looking forward to the next game. Coach Paul Johnson calls a QB keeper, fumble, and NC State returns it for a touchdown and the cover.

too many stories, betting tennis with handicap games...

you got +4.5 games on one player...

Your guy loses the first set 6-4...going into a tiebreak in the 2nd and rooting for THE OTHER GUY to take the 2nd set so you can cash your bet.

Instead, the guy you bet on takes the tiebreak 7-6, only to lose the 3rd set 6-2 for you to lose the bet.

had too many of them...i can tell this stories for hours

I feel ya. To the lay public or occasional gambler this rooting phenom might seem conflicting, but as one stated, this occurs most often when a tie and OT might destroy the cover (on the DOG) you've "earned" all day. This is also often the case in a teaser when you need your team to cover but you also have the under and (contrary to their previous 6 games) they score everytime they touch the damn ball! Heh heh!

It's happened to me too many times to count.

When I have a bad beat, I just try to remember that I get some breaks occasionally, too.   That's what I tell myself, anyway, even if I don't believe it.

same thing happened in the chargers/broncos game.  if you had broncos +4, you were hoping for the chargers to get the first down to run out the clock.  instead, broncos defense an gave unnecessary effort to force a field goal to put the chargers up 5 points with only half a minute remaining.

I always look for situations to bet against my alma mater (Syracuse) and luckily they are legion.I had Toledo+2.5 and orange scored lateTD to go ahead but replay showed they missed pat even though refs review gave it to them. Toledo ties and loses in OT with no cover in a game they shold have won in reg.

Lame Ass Cover...but we needed Saint Tebow to mount a comeback to even have a chance.

I once won a bet when the favorite (I was on the dog) fumbled the ball running out the clock and the dog took it to the house for 6 with virtually no time left.

Put down "moosed" and "lucked out" on a piece of paper and keep track of bets that fall into these categories for a couple of months.  You'll be surprised how even they are.  Lucky wins get rationalized by the old, "well, I knew I was on the right side."  A sense of entitlement.  When you get moosed, you basically feel like you had money stolen from you....not easy to forget.

There was a college basketball game a few years back where a guy was just dribbling the clock out.  Right before time expired, he just flung it toward the basket underhanded (from around 30 feet) and swished the MF'er which changed the betting outcome of the game.

If Maine Road reads this, I think he knows what game I'm referring to.  It's the most unbelieveable moose I've ever seen in my life.

I guess this is a story before my betting started, but still involved money.

Whilst living in So Cal in '99 with an American girl, the newspaper ran the "pick the winners" in college football & 1 NFL game. The NFL game had to be the exact score. Score them all for $2000, the NFL game for $500.

Neddles to say, we were forced to settle for the NFL game if it came up. It was GB .vs. MINN & I went GB.

We rooted for the Packers all game until the final few minutes. All MINN had to do was stop GB from scoring a TD & make it a FG to win $500, but the defence couldn't do it in the last minute.

The name "Brett Favre" has haunted me since.
