Andrew Luck’s best NFL landing spot

It could be argued that Andrew Luck, Stanford’s quarterback and the Heisman trophy favorite, is making more headlines in the NFL than college football right now.

Luck is the best quarterback prospect John Elway and it’s assumed he’s the automatic first overall pick unless you’re on some high-quality hallucinogens.

The “Suck for Luck” campaign has been well documented. After Week 7 we’ve still got three winless teams and two one-win teams.
Andrew Luck.
But now we’re hearing whispers that Luck might pull a move made famous by another one-time Cardinal quarterback, John Elway, and put into practice most recently by Peyton Manning’s little brother Eli.

The “I ain’t going to your shit-bag team so don’t bother drafting me” move.

That got me thinking. Which team(s) is on the prodigy’s no-go list?

Off the three teams still seeking win No. 1, the Rams appear to be the least likely to draft Luck. Sam Bradford was drafted first overall just a year and a half ago.

That leaves the Dolphins and Colts left of the winless bunch, two franchises that don’t share much in common other than their embarrassing win-loss records this season.

Indianapolis is maybe the most stable franchise in the league. Bill Polian has been the GM since ’98, they still run Tom Moore’s offense and Tony Dungy’s defense even though both coaches left the franchise. And of course they still have Peyton.

Miami, on the other hand, has gone through coaches and front-office types and even different owners in the last decade with limited success. The Dolphins are expected to do another house cleaning this offseason, with head coach Tony Sparano likely the first to be shown the door.

Still for all Miami’s faults there are some bonuses, like Jake Long. You know, that mountain of a man who holds the fort down on the left side of the line. Some consider him the best left tackle in football and he’s only 26 years old. It’s got to be a nice feeling knowing Long’s blocking your blindside.

The young talent doesn’t stop there. DB Vontae Davis, WR Brandon Marshall and OL Mike Pouncey are all on the right side of 28.

You could even make a case that Miami has more above-average players than the Colts, thanks to two or three consecutive bad drafts by Polian.

And then of course, if you go to Miami, you’ll start right away. Indy can’t make the same type of promise. Manning is expected to be healthy – although who can say for sure – by next season and he hasn’t hinted at retiring anytime soon.

Some might say that sitting and learning from a guy like Peyton could do Luck a world of good, but who’s to say Manning would welcome a mentor role. Brett Favre didn’t with Aaron Rodgers. Manning may seem like a nice guy and a good teammate but he’s never had his status on the team threatened.

The coaching and front-office structure is in a mess in Miami, but getting Andrew Luck should create a Field of Dreams scenario. If you draft him, they will come.

Miami's the better of the two destinations in my opinion. What do you guys think?

Second coming since Marino!!!

Dolpins where trying all game to lose against the Bronco's and even God himslef couldn't help TEBOW complete a pass, until it REALLY counted. The Dolphins parted like the RED SEA  on the 2-point conversion when EVERYONE knew he would RUN the ball.

Miami will not win a game this year and Marc Anthony and Luck will be smashing South Beach in early May!

The funniest thing about this “suck for luck” sweepstakes is that he is a Junior right now. He can return to school if he wants to. I doubt that he would but imagine if you are a GM who feels stoked about getting the #1 pick and he stays in school? That said I’d say the best situation for him would be if the Rams were to have the pick and deal him off to a low/middle of the road team like the Redskins. Of the 2 winless teams that need a QB his best situation would be Miami as the expectations in Indy following a legend would be very tough.

Since Marino, its been a grab bag of QB's. Huard, Lemon, Fiedler, etc.

I don't promote the "suck for Luck" theory but if it happens it happens and I just hope that Luck and the Dolphins can return to being contenders in the AFC East.

He might play like Elway, but I think he should follow the example set by Peyton Manning. Be grateful and loyal to whomever drafts you, respecting the privilege to play football for living, and decide that you're going to help that football team be the best that it can be.

Unlike Favre, I think Peyton is secure enough with his legacy in the game to not be botehred by having Luck as an understudy, but I agree that Miami looks to be the ideal destination at this point.

I can't see Luck pulling that card. He just doesn't seem like that kind of kid. I really hope he goes to Miami. I was a huge Marino fan, and I'm also a huge Luck fan. It would be a perfect match for me.

Thanks for commenting guys. I'll be interested to see what Luck does. Question though, if you're the Rams and you get the first pick, what would you be looking for to trade out of the pick? Two 1st rounders and three 2nd rounders? Maybe more?

Luck pulls an Elway move to go to Denver to be mentored by Elway.... if its Rams or Colts they trade him and stack their franchise for years to come.... I think valuable picks (maybe two firsts and two seconds) and throws Tebow in.... If its Miami they would want Luck but may have to let him go...plus they have to take Tebow...lol... even if he cant hit the broad side of a barn the kid is loved in Florida. Well he's actually loved everywhere....

Colts are deliberately tanking the season just to select Peyton Manning's heir apparent, Stanford QB Andrew Luck in next April's NFL Draft.

Ashton, I'm wondering if you read this sentence..........."Luck is the best quarterback prospect John Elway and it’s assumed he’s the automatic first overall pick unless you’re on some high-quality hallucinogens."

Pretty sure you omitted a word or two. Something like "since"

First pick, first round could still hinge on need. Mia or Indy......probably true. Though Indy has a delicate tap dance to do with PM. Manning by the way has an 18 million dollar payment coming do soon. That might help the owner/GM make a decision. As in adios Peyton, thanks for the memories......that 18 million is going to Luck plus some quality guys to play in front of him. S.F. drafts 2 tackles in the first round, and presto.....that and Harbaugh and the offense looks a lot different than last year.

Graysimm, sounds great but who wants Tebow? He may end up a pariah. Who wants the aggravation of a guy who can't play his position, but generates big fan approval.........which inevitably will force the coaches hand?

Luck seems to be a bright guy, who unfortunately looks like a wolfman. A face made for radio, or to wear a helmet. If hes smart he'll go somewhere with a great offensive line, solid running backs and decent receivers..........AND a hall of famer who is in his final year or two. Ask Aaron Rodgers how that turned out? I watched him in the USC game, and he was good, but not quite ready for a full time gig in the pros.

I think he'll get great counseling from his family, and they'll help him weigh the pros and cons. I'd hate to see him go to a team with a patchwork O-line, where he'll learn on the fly and be running for his life. Money ought to be at the very bottom of his list........in that where ever he goes he'll get 9 figures in his first 2 or 3 contracts. What could be better than 25 million over say 4 years where he'll be getting paid to carry a clipboard for the 1st 2 years. Going to meetings and talking strategy with PM, wearing a headset and listening to the logic of each call.

This decision, could very well be the biggest decision in his life (only possible exception a wife and/or laser facial hair removal). Anyone remember Ryan Leaf? 1998, Eli Manning or RL......."you can't go wrong with either was the prevailing thinking." Many think SD is still recovering. They traded two firsts, a second plus a few more and 3 timepro bowl player, Eric Metcalf...... just to move up to 2nd from 3rd. Then they gave Leaf 31 million over 4 years and a 15 million dollar signing bonus. Shudder.

i was the orginal one that started the SUCK FOR LUCK in the middle of the college season in 2010 because i have been a Miami fan for 43 years now and know all about our great owner Joe Robbie would have done whatever be needed to get Luck on the Dolphins team! i am just hopping that the Dolphins keep tanking thier season to get the first pick but they will have to bring in a superstar coach to convince him to want to play for this shit ass Miami team that really needs him really bad or i can say forget about 2012 also again and i got a lot of shit from Miami fans for starting this SUCK FOR LUCK campaign now i just need to prove to all of them i was right to start it over a year and a half ago

if he returns to school next yr. the same or similiar situation presents itself. Or the 1st pick, suchas rams, who don't need a qb select and trade him or bradford,
