Where to from here Roger?!

When he woke up this morning, the ex Number 1 player in men's Tennis would have realised that what actually happened was not a bad dream but rather a grim reality. How awful it must have been for him not having his mandatory digit in front of his name, as it was "stolen" by the Spanish Olympic Champion.  Without over dramatising it, I actually felt sad for Fedexpress, because it really marked the end of an era in men's Tennis. It wasn't just that Roger had lost his number 1 ranking, but that he will never again dominate the ATP circuit as he has done over the last 4 years. That was then, this is now!   Back in January, you could only get a mere $2.5 return on your dollar if you backed Roger to win all 4 majors in 2008! Now the question is 'Will Roger ever win another major?' Many people's  answer to that question now would be 'Not bloody likely!"

Here's a little break down of Federer's demise, and why the punters should lose confidence in the ex number 1 player. He could not beat Nadal on grass, he could not win a hard court title in 7 attempts, he has lost to Stepanek, Karlovic, Simon and Fish, he looked like a lost little boy last week in Bejing against Blake making so many unforced errors and being more erratic than a DUI driver. It's not just his losses but the manner in which he lost those matches. He played those matches as if his name was Kubot, or Wessels, or Bracciali!  What? You've never heard of these guys before?!  Well, that's because they're busy playing challengers, and that's precisely my point. Federer lost those matches as though he was ranked 300, not the number 1 player in the world. Or am I being too harsh?

Next week Federer has his last chance to redeem himself in 2008. Do we think he stands a chance? Well, until prior to that loss against Blake, I would have thought Federer had a really good shot at winning this last major. However, after seeing him play one of the most ordinary matches I've seen in a while, I think he has zero chance of winning this last one.  There are some sport books that offer Yes/No betting on Fedex to win or not win the US Open. It is not very often (if ever!) you'll hear me say this, but betting a NO is as good as a "lock". It's his confidence, his style of play, his mannerism, his choice of shots that make the 'NO' a lock. It's time for the number 2 seed (last time he entered an event not as number 1 seed was back in early 2004!) to toss Mirka as a "coach", and make room for a real caoch - here's a name for you Roger - Killer Cahill! Does that name ring a bell?!

Aussie-

Well done.

However, let's look at the big picture here.  Yes, Fed has had a very bad year (by his standards), but about 99% of the ATP would consider this Federer '08 year great for them.  Federer is entitled to an off year when you look at the dominance from 2003 through 2007.

What has to happen for Federer to win some more slams (needs 3 to pass Sampras on all time record)?  He's got to get away from the pressure, first.  And this is already happening as yahoo talking heads on the tele are calling the ATP the big 3 (Djoko, Nadal, Murray) with Federer "a distant memory."

You've seen a lot of tennis, obviously, and you know as well as anyone that Nadal's style is going to lead to his physical downfall eventually, while Fed plays a fluid style and doesn't have the knee, shoulder, elbow, back issues that are going to afflict Rafa.

OK>....rambling.....let me make this long novel short.

Fed isn't going to win any US Open this year...no question about it.  But I can assure you that barring injury, you will see him win at leat 3 more slams before he hangs it up.  You'll also see his name at "world's number one" at least one more time.

Some USA bloke like Andy Roddick or James Blake would surely love to have Federer's year for 2008, even if he never wins another match the rest of the calendar year.

1) Aussie Open SF

2) Estoril Champ

3) Monte Carlo Finalist

4) Hamburg Finalist

5) Halle Champ

6) Wimbledon Finalist

7) Olympic Doubles Gold Medal

Goddamn!!!!!!!!  I wish my 2008 were that bad!

Oh yeah..........forgot one.

R Garros finalist.

Yeah, Fed took the ass-whupping of his life there in that final vs Rafa, but the bottom line is Fed was there, and I didn't see anyone else playing Nadal in the final this year-------which also was his third RG final in a row.

Anyone want to stick a knife in Federer's career and jubilate at his "off-year?"

My advice to you is to think again.

Fed could possibly win 4 more slams.

2 in London.

1 in Melbourne.

1 in New York City.

May take 4 years to do it, but to pass Sampras on all time slam win list.....it's worth it.

Fed will be 31 in 4 years.

But yeah, let's face it, RG doesn't seem to be in the cards.  Nadal would have to be gone early for that to happen.  But there are tons of youngsters in Argentina and Spain just waiting to be the next "Nadal of R Garros."

Look at young 19 year old Juan Martin Del Potro.

Fed will pass Sampras and be "world's number one" again before calling it quits, sitting on gazillions, never working again, and then headed straight to the tennis hall of fame.  Not a bad future.

Nadal is to win US Open 2008..He's way to hot to not to think so....I think Juan Martin Del Potro could take Fedexpress out in the US Open think this year....just my opinion.

Great read guys! Great article Aussie and excellent contributions! I agree with many points made above; I felt sorry for Fed when his "reign" came to end - he dominated tennis like Tiger (sorry) dominates golf and it has unravelled big time since the loss at Wimdledon. That was the greatest tennis I have ever witnessed and had Fed played anyobe but Rafa that day it would have been a lopsided victory for Fed-Ex. To me, he hasn't been the same since that 5 setter. He was aweful in Toronto and that too is when it has all gone down the tubes. What makes it so sad is that he is so classly, never cries and has gone about things as a true champion. I would love to see him win a major again because I still think that he may be the best to have ever played the game and I hope for his sake and the sake of tennis that he does indeed win a few more majors to pass Pistol!

Fed's fiance is going to be one fat pig in 5 years.

I'd hit it though.

CCL I know exactely what you mean by Roger having a bad year by 'Roger standards' and an immaculate year by 'A-Rod standards'. I was hanging on to that very fact for so long too. But like I said, it is the way and mannerism of Federer that has made me think that the great man is done! We know he is special. He has proven himself to be one of the best ever.

However, Now he has another up hill battle in front of him. Can he do a Sampras or an Agassi and resurrect his ranking???? Sampras pulled it off with that last US Open win, Agassi did the impossible battling thru' challengers winning against Kubot, and Bracciali to finally hold aloft that trophy at the Australian Open and French Open.

To achieve such a feat, it takes someone extra special. Those two were - Federer will have to prove himself that he can make that list too!

Yeah he's a pretty good year by Nalbandian's standards, but unless he proves himself to be that extra special player in 2009, and win a major or two, he will replace Nalbandian's ATP ranking by the end of 2009

Aussie-

May not even happen in 2009, but all Fed needs is 3 more slams, and he has more than Sampras.

True, RG is the one to have.

I didn't like Fed's antics at Olympics one bit (clowning around with Wawrinka, not staying in the village, etc).  He has sold out----just like most do.

Fed can definitely win 2 more in London.  Then he's got to pull one more in Melbourne or one more in New York City.  Can be done, but no use putting a timetable on it.

BTW, Nalbandian is farking loon.  Guy should have won a slam by now, but he can't stop partying long enough to play more than 2 months top...then he falls out.

Sampras was pretty much done after '99, but he pulled one more at Big W and somehow pulled one more in NYC.

Fed has to do the same.....just one more.

But Fed is far superior to Pete "I never got close at R Garros" Sampras, so it can be done.

Nadal won't keep this up, either.

Nadal's knees are in terrible condition, at such a young age, does not bode well for him.I agree with Clay that he wont last long as No.1 if he isnt forced to retire due to this. His balls out style of play that has made him so successful will also be his undoing.I do forsee Fed regaining lost glory and surpassing Sampras.
