Something about the Wimbledon
odds just puts me right to ZZZZZZZ…..ZZZZZZZ….ZZZZZZZZ…
Oh, sorry. I was just sleeping through another lopsided,
ace-filled, predictable men’s tennis matchup. All that sleeping got me thinking
about, well, World Series sleepers. We know who the major contenders are, but
who are the sneaky teams who could slip into the playoffs unnoticed and do some
damage?
Behold, the Top Five Fall Classic sleepers, with
their current MLB betting
odds to win it all included. Omitted from this list: Colorado. Sorry, but when
you win 17 of 18 you’re hardly a “surprise team.”
5. Chicago
Cubs (6.5 to 1)
While the sportsbooks still consider them a solid
favorite, they hardly deserve contender status so far this season. They’ve
labored their way to a barely-above-.500 record and currently sit third in the
NL Central. They’re still just 3.5 games back of division leader St. Louis,
though, so they’re one hot streak away from getting back in the hunt. If Rich
Harden and Alfonso Soriano return to form, watch out.
4. Florida
Marlins (55 to 1)
They raised many eyebrows among MLB
predictions experts with their 11-1 start to the season, then crashed back
to Earth and stank up the joint for a couple of months. Lately, though, they’ve
rallied back to .500 while the NL East-leading Phillies have faltered, leaving
the Fish just three games back. They have the talent on both sides of the ball
to make a splash if they reach the big dance; Ricky Nolasco’s second half could
make or break their season.
3. San
Francisco Giants (45 to 1)
In the playoffs, pitching is everything, and the
Giants have it in spades. Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum form what may be the
game’s best one-two punch right now while Randy Johnson and Barry Zito have
turned back the clock. They’ll need to acquire at least one bat – Matt Holliday
– if they want to be taken seriously.
2. Los
Angeles Angels (11 to 1)
Before Kelvim Escobar’s arm troubles flared up
again and Ervin Santana returned to the DL, the Angels would’ve topped this
list. They’re a deep team with underrated pop (Mike Napoli, Juan Rivera and
Kendry Morales are overshadowed by Torii Hunter, Bobby Abreu and Vladimir
Guerrero) and they still have some solid starting pitchers in Jered Weaver and
John Lackey. Texas seems prepared to hand the AL West over to them without a
fight but the Angels need better work from Lackey and especially Vladimir
Guerrero (one homer this season!?) to
really make for legit sports picks.
1. Tampa
Bay Rays (14 to 1)
Don’t look now, but baseball’s most talented young
team is just two games back of the Yankees and Blue Jays for the AL Wild Card
berth. With the likes of Evan Longoria, Carl Crawford, B.J. Upton and Carlos
Pena, they have more than enough offensive firepower. The biggest difference
between this year and last is that their pitching – both in the rotation and
the bullpen – has eluded them. However, I still think it can bounce back. Scott
Kazmir returns soon, David Price still has time to turn his season around and
relievers Grant Balfour and Dan Wheeler should improve. The Rays still have a
shot to win it all and most sportsbook software predicts it based on their
roster.
