With the Super
Bowl 43 matchup quickly approaching, let’s take a break from Super Bowl betting and
do something a little more fun. Don’t get upset! We’ll get upset for you as we
look at the top 5 biggest upsets in Super Bowl history:
Super Bowl III – The
Joe Namath Guarantee
New York Jets 16,
Baltimore Colts 7
If we’re doing a list of the biggest upsets in super
bowl betting line history, how can you not include the Joe Namath
guarantee? The Jets were a 17-point underdog on the point spread but Broadway
Joe, a quarterback from the AFL, which was supposed to be the weaker league,
guarantees a victory. And better yet, Namath leads his team - and the AFL - to
victory, which gave the AFL the credibility they needed.
Super Bowl XLII – A
Different Date With Destiny
New York Giants 17,
New England Patriots 14
It wasn’t a question of who
will win the super bowl, but the question was by how much? The New England
Patriots, who achieved perfection throughout the regular season and the
playoffs, were derailed by the six-seed in the NFC, the New York Giants. The
Giants won all of their playoff games on the road and shocked the world as
14-point underdogs. Eli Manning, who led
the Giants to victory, became the first brother tandem with his big bro Peyton
to win back-to-back Super Bowls.
1964 NFL Championship
– Hold The Presses
Cleveland Browns 27,
Baltimore Colts 0
Talk about counting your eggs before the chicken hatched,
Sports Illustrated all but assumed that the Colts were going to win, and so did
a lot of people who bet the superbowl
line. But the Browns held everyone’s horses and won in stunning fashion.
The Browns upended Don Shula’s and Johnny Unitas’ Colts with a 27-0 shutout
win. SI was forced to eat their words after the big game.
Super Bowl XXXII –
Broncos Ride Elway Express
Denver Broncos 31,
Green Bay Packers 24
The Denver Broncos were a double-digit underdog on the superbowl
line heading into Super Bowl XXXII. They were facing the defending champs
as Brett Favre and the Packers, who had won the previous season, were back to
defend their trophy. But John Elway proved to be the difference in the game as
he led the Broncos to a thrilling Super Bowl victory, upending a lot of bets in
the process.
1942 NFL Championship
Washington Redskins
14, Chicago Bears 6
In the early 1940’s, the Chicago Bears were as dominant an
NFL team as you could find. They had won the previous two titles and were in
the Championship game looking for a three-peat. The Bears were undefeated,
favored on the super
bowl betting line and looking to crown a perfect season but Sammy Baugh and
the Redskins thought otherwise. The Redskins took a beating from the Bears just
two years previous in the 1940 Championship game, losing 73-0. This time around
Baugh led the stunner as the Redskins held off the bears with a 14-6 victory.
