NFL Week Five Lines - An Early Look

Week 4 in the National Football League may just be in the books, but it’s not too early to be thinking about the NFL betting lines for Week 5.

Some of the Week 5 lines hit the NFL odds list before Monday night’s game between Baltimore and Pittsburgh even kicked off. The early odds can sometimes be the best ones you’re going to see all week long, but they can also bite you if a late injury or on-field change causes a move that gives the line more value somewhere else.

A number of the early lines from Week 5 stand out, including an interesting matchup between San Diego and Miami. The Dolphins were off in Week 4, so this will be their first game since they shocked the Patriots as 12.5-point underdogs. Miami heads home for Week 5, and even though they broke out against New England they’re still 7-point underdogs against the Chargers.

Patriots and Giants Both Getting Double-Digit Spreads

The two teams that faced each other in the Superbowl play host to two bumbling AFC teams that look absolutely horrific. The Giants host the Cincinnati Bengals as 13-point favorites, and the Dolphins pay a visit to Foxboro to try and take on the Patriots. Are either of these teams worthy of such spreads in our NFL odds and lines?

My major concern with the Giants is the possibility of the Bengals opening up a can of whoop-ass out of sheer frustration. The Giants’ betting faithful have had the luxury of watching their beloved Eli Manning beat up on the Redskins and the lowly Rams. Plaxico Burress is becoming a force of nature, once again, and his great season continues after he posted 81 yards on 5 catches with one touchdown.

The big story in the Big Apple remains Eli Manning, who continues to put up huge numbers throughout the season. He had 260 passing yards last week, and dotted the scoreboard with three touchdowns to three different pass catchers. The Bengals’ have given up 123.5 passing yards per ... [More]

Injuries Forcing BetUS Sportsbook Odds to Shift in Week 3

The injury bug is always a huge factor in handicapping any NFL game.  There’s no doubt that injuries usually become the focal point for online NFL betting fans after about Wednesday of each week.

Not only do injuries seriously impact a team’s ability to win games, but they usually impact the online wagering spread.  I’ve listed some of the likeliest biggest movers, from an online football betting point-of-view, in Week 3.

BetUS online sportsbook betting fans should take a look at each one of the games in order to ascertain how the line might shift due to injuries.

Oakland Raiders online betting spread + 10 vs. Buffalo Bills online betting spread – 10 - - The online wagering spread actually hasn’t changed in this one, but I have t... [More]

College Football Week Four Weekend Preview

This weekend’s college football schedule may look a little boring to some pigskins fans, with the top two teams in the nation (No. 1 USC and No. 2 Oklahoma) both on a bye. However, the NCAAF betting slate isn’t completely void of ranked matchups, with No. 6 LSU dropping in on No. 10 Auburn in an SEC battle, and No. 18 Wake Forest taking on No. 24 Florida State in an ACC showdown.

The annual battle between LSU and Auburn will be another interesting affair for whichever announcers end up calling the game, since both teams are named the Tigers. LSU, the reigning national champions, have started the season 2-0, but it’s a pretty meaningless 2-0 since those wins came against pushovers Appalachian State and North Texas. Just last week LSU destroyed North Texas 41-3, but they did not cover the spread, as they were a 44.5-point favorite on the NCAAF odds. Running back Charles Scott rumbled for 102 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries, while the LSU defense took care of the rest, holding North Texas to 199 total yards.

NY Giants Biggest Week Two Favorites

Like to latch onto big favorites when you do your NFL betting early in the season? Well, this weekend the biggest point spread is attached to the defending Super Bowl champs.

The Giants began their championship defense last Thursday by knocking off the Redskins at home by a score of 16-7. New York went up 10-0 in the first quarter of that contest on an Eli Manning one-yard rush and a John Carney field goal, and from there they held the Redskins to a single Jason Campbell TD strike to start the season at 1-0.

But New York’s success in that game isn’t the only reason they’re 8.5-point road favorites in Week 2 – it’s also partly due to their opposition. The Rams were awful in Week 1, as their offense could muster only a fourth-quarter field goal in a 38-3 road loss to the Eagles. Marc Bulger threw for just 158 yards, and Steven Jackson rushed for 40.

Whose Got a Quarterback? Woes Around the League

The New England Patriots are underdogs? To the New York Jets? That’s the NFL betting reality we live in now that Tom Brady is out for the season. And the Pats are just one of several teams with quarterback questions heading into their Week 2 matchups.

Brady looked like he was done for the season when he limped off the field early last Sunday, and sure enough the Patriots put him on injured reserve on Monday. The star QB reportedly tore both his MCL and his ACL, and recovery time could take up to nine months. That could end up affecting his ability to prepare for the 2009 NFL campaign.

However, the Pats are focusing their concern on 2008 right now, and preparing inexperienced backup Matt Cassel to guide their offense. Cassel completed 13-of-18 pass attempts for 152 yards last weekend against the Chiefs in relief of Brady, with one TD strike and no interceptions. That was enough to let the Patriots start the year at 1-0.

NCAA College Football Weekend Preview

While there aren’t many marquee sports betting matchups on the schedule this weekend, there’s plenty of value on the college football betting board in Week 2. Here’s a look ahead to the NCAA odds and games grabbing the attention of handicappers across the nation as NCAA pigskin gets into high gear:

No. 5 Florida hosts rival Miami on Saturday night in Gainesville, in a game that will be high on drama if nothing else. The Gators haven’t defeated the Hurricanes since 1985, which isn’t lost on reigning Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and the rest of his teammates. Wide receiver Percy Harvin is expected to be in the lineup following offseason heel surgery for the Gators, who are priced as 21-point favorites for the contest. The total is set at 51.5.

Notre Dame makes its season debut as 22-point home faves against San Diego State on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Irish were absolutely atrocious for backers last season,... [More]
