The Nets are going to finishing ahead of the Knicks in the Eastern Conference standings, and perhaps that was a surprise to many, since New Jersey committed itself to a youth movement of sorts, dealing away Richard Jefferson after trading Jason Kidd last season. What happened was that Devin Harris became one of the league's most improved players, staying among the league leaders in scoring for most of the season, and Brook Lopez had a rookie season that was better than expected, worthy of making the All-Rookie team for certain.
The Knicks had to adapt to a new way of playing, as Mike D'Antoni brought in his "eight Second or Less" offense. There were a lot of roster changes, and eventually the key players turned out to be David Lee, and industrious rebounder, and Nate Robinson, better known as a two-time NBA Slam Dunk champion, who scores in bunches off the bench. Chris Duhon was credible as a point guard, Al Harrington is a trade acquisition who got them 20 points on most nights, and Danilo Gallinari provided some hope for the future before going down with injury. While this was all happening, the Knicks were able to wash away the bad memory of Isiah Thomas and open up some salary cap room to make a run at a couple of free agents after next season. All in all, maybe not a bad season after all.
The Nets are ending the season on a high note; they have won back-to-back games against Orlando and Charlotte, and have covered five games in a row. They've also made 51 three-pointers in the last five contests, which kind of steals the Knicks' thunder. The series history greatly favors them, as they've won 10 of the last 11 meetings in Madison Square Garden. Their fans don;t have a hard time getting through the tunnel (that is, if they can get tickets). Vince Carter has shot 57% against the Knicks this season.
Even if they have to go without Harris, who sat out the last game, we're taking the points with the Nets, the 4.5-point underdog in the BetUS NBA pro basketball sports betting odds.
