Online sports wagering enthusiasts and NCAA football betting sharps will have an exciting sports wagering opportunity this weekend as two unfamiliar faces to the college football elite do battle on Saturday.
After a victory over Louisville last week in NCAAF betting, the Connecticut Huskies jumped to 5-0, and all the way up to No. 24 in the nation. This marks just the second time in school program history that the Huskies have made it to the Top 25, after last season’s surprising performance. UConn rallied late and edged out the 26-21 victory thanks to an interception by linebacker Lawrence Wilson, which he returned 45 yards for the major. This was the first true test that the UConn defensive corps had to survive—a late game surge against a respectable opponent.
The bad news is that quarterback Tyler Lorenzen is now gone 6-8 weeks, after marching the team to respectability. This puts backup Zach Frazer at the helm for this key matchup. That might not be too scary for Huskies fans however. He certainly has talent—he’s even a Notre Dame transfer—as displayed in his 8-for-15 finish to the Louisville game. Most NCAA college football betting experts suggest that Frazer may actually have a stronger arm than “The Hefty Lefty’s brother” Lorenzen, however he won’t come in with the scrambling and innate playmaking ability that the incumbent starter has.
North Carolina continues to live up to expectations as the surprise team of the year, upsetting Miami last week on a last-minute touchdown. They too will battle quarterback injuries, as J.J. Yates will be out another 3-4 weeks as well. Junior Cameron Sexton will likely get the start, after going 11 for 19 for 242 yards against the Hurricanes. He’ll have plenty of talented targets to throw to however, with wide outs such as Brandon Tate and Hakeem Nicks—who averages 89 yards per game.
While the Miami game was an upset, it was certainly not of epic proportions. In fact, North Carolina hasn’t beaten a ranked team since their 2005 victory over Boston College. UConn will be a real test for the Tar Heels, and will prove whether they’re just a speedy team with upset capability, or the real deal.
The Pick:
With two rookie quarterbacks back there slingin’, take the under—regardless of the number. If you’re feeling lucky, take the Heels on the money line as well. Their quick running attack (which they’ll be forced to use) should confuse UConn’s D-line, and carry them to a narrow victory.
