A little history lesson - this is the Titans against the team formerly known as the Titans (yes, that's correct).
By now, it is obvious that a couple of things must be concluded: Kerry Collins is more than just a seat-warmer at quarterback for the Titans, and Brett Favre has definitely constituted a great deal of the difference in the attitude around the New York Jets' camp. The Jets crossed an important bridge last week with its come-from-behind win over their nemesis, the New England Patriots. And a few people have been talking about the possibilities of an unbeaten campaign in Nashville, although not many around the Titans' staff, and not as many people overall as were rooting the Patriots down the stretch last season.
With New York, one must point to the upgrade of the offensive line, which includes not just the addition of Pro Bowl performer Alan Faneca but also the development of the youngsters along the front. On defense, the Jets have been very tough against the run, giving up just 3.4 yards a carry. Of course, that defensive line gets a big test against the Titans, who were stifled somewhat by Chicago two weeks ago but rebounded with 140 yards against Jacksonville last week.
Tennessee's stop unit has been incredibly consistent; the Titans lead the NFL in points allowed, surrendering just 13.1 points per game, and only one opponent has scored more than 17 against them. So it won't be as simple as Favre running around and doing some gunslinging.
Fortunately for New York, that's not the only thing they can do. Thomas Jones (4.5 ypc), the nine-year veteran running back, is on track for his highest yardage total ever, and has already matched his career high with nine touchdowns. And when you look at the Jets' offense, they are scoring one point for every 11.6 yards gained, which indicates efficiency.
Some people forget that Kerry Collins has always been a quarterback who has hung up good numbers, so if he has to he can air it out pretty good. And it's a little more difficult to talk about those "non-threatening" wide receivers when you see how Justin Gage has been coming on (147 yards, two TD's vs. Jaguars). With Chris Johnson (787 yards) and LenDale White (11TD's) operating in the Tennessee backfield, the Titans will have more success doing what they do best.
We'll lay the points with the undefeated Titans, the 5.5-point favorite in the BetUS NFL pro football sports betting odds.
