- Well, went 3-4 last week.  Went against my instinct on San Diego and tried to get cute with plays on Miami and Minnesota.  Thats the price I paid for laying money on Tarvaris and ignoring an enormous matchup mis-match against the Eagles blitz.  Lesson learned.

- On to this week, still alot of homework to do, but my first play I am going large on.  I really, really like this play, although I would have preferred Arizona would've had to play the Giants in the cold.

Playing

Carolina -9.5 (Large)

Fun Stats to start it off:

- Arizona is 2-7 this year against either playoff teams or teams that were in contention and barely missed.  (Losses to NE, Washington, Carolina, Philly, Minnesota, Giants, and the Jets, wins at home against Dallas and Miami very early).  The combined average loss for these games was by 18 points.

- Arizona is 0-5 playing on the Eastern Time zone, losing by an average of 20 points.

- Arizona is also 0-5 against Physical style football teams, which Carolina certainly qualifies at.

- Defensively, Arizona is giving up 31 points per game on the road.  Their rushing yardage allowed is not bottom tier but their road stats are skewed by playing a few poor rushing teams in the first place.

As for Carolina, the only teams that gave them any trouble whatsoever were physical style teams with either strong running games and/or strong defenses they played on the road (Minnesota, Giants, Atlanta, Tampa).

- Carolina went undefeated in their home games, winning by an average of 17 points per game, including a ppg average of almost 30, which combined with Arizona giving up 30 on the road is a glaring stat.

- Carolina rushed for an average of 173 yards per game and 5.0 yards per carry at home.  Being this is a playoff game, the ground attack will be more prevelant.

Other relevant points and Bottom Line:

- I tried to fade Carolina a few times at home this season and learned a hard lesson.  This team takes pride in smashing defenses in the face on the ground, and their two-headed monster rushing attack led by Deangelo Williams is absolutely on fire right now.  I think they are going to run all over the Cardinals in this game, and with a large spread like this running the ball is of paramount importance because it is the best guard against a back door cover.

- Defensively, Carolina has been had a few times but rarely at home, as they are only giving up 14 yards per game.  Being that Boldin is banged up, Lucas and Gamble should have moderate success against the Cardinals air attack, and I expect to see alot of 3 and outs.  I also see Peppers and Jon Beason absolutely wreaking havoc on Warner.  A statute like quarterback against a resurgent Peppers is not good news for Cardinal backers.  Warner is going to be put on his back and hurried for most of this game, and I expect alot of three and outs and poor field position for Arizona, which sets up right into the hands of a Panthers rushing attack that is rolling along like a tank right now.

- The bottom line is Arizona is a soft, pass first team.  That works fine when they are playing at home against a rookie quarterback or the NFC West.  It does not bode well on the road versus a physically tough team that takes pleasure in punishing opponents.  I have a small worry about laying this much chalk with Delhomme but I don't think the game is going to be in his hands that much.

I am aware this Cardinals team almost beat Carolina earlier this year, but Zona was playing better at the time and Carolina wasn't really rolling along yet.

Arizona has proven to be a patsy against both physical teams and when they have to travel cross country, and being that playoff games are more physical this game is setting up to be a complete and utter rout.

Carolina 31 Arizona 13

Thoughts on this one, haven't made my mind up yet.

Balty/Tennessee:

Tough one to cap.  Baltimore has beat up on weaker teams this year, only beating one playoff team aside from Miami all season.   Tennessee has beaten 4 playoff teams and has been strong as hell at home.

- In their first meeting Baltimore dominated total yardage and time of possesion.  Collins threw two picks but also led the Titans to two 80 yard scoring drives, leading to a victory.  Tennessee also owned the special teams edge in return yards and Stover missed a field goal.

- I'm trying to think of how each offense is going to attack.  Both defenses are elite, their stats are almost identical.  The strength of Tennessee's run defense is power, while the strength of the Ravens ground attack is power.  I wonder how Haynesworth and Van Den Bosch are going to hold up from a conditioning standpoint as each has been out for over a month.  Could they wear down?

- On the other side Tennessee likes to soften teams up with Lendale and burn them with Johnson.  Lendale White is going absolutely NOWHERE against this Ravens D, so the question is can Johnson get loose a couple of times and can Collins manage to not throw 2-3 picks.  Collins played well against Pittsburgh so Tennessee has proven it can take on tough defenses.

- Experience edge to Collins, coaching edge to Fisher, momentum edge to Baltimore.  I think this number is spot on so may be ripe for a teaser.  I am also leaning under as I don't see Flacco having success downfield like he has in other games, but the number is so fucking low its making me ponder.

NY/Philly thoughts

Haven't fully decided yet but leaning Giants.  I think Philly is going to be a very popular play due to short memories and that Philly beat them in NY very recently.  The Giants have been reeling lately losing 3 out of 4, and the game they won was in over-time, so I suspect the Eagles band wagon is going to be over-flowing on this one.

Advantages I see for NY:

1. The last time these two faced off when Jacobs was healthy the Giants rushed for over 200 yards and almost doubled the time of possession.  Yes, Plax was involved in that game.

2. The Eagles pash rush is vaunted no doubt but aside from one bad outing vs Dallas this NYG offensive line is stellar and has only given up 1 sack to Philly in two meetings this year.

3. I think this Philly team is a master of smoke and mirrors.  They beat the Giants, yes, but NY was in a very bad spot following the Plax drama and Philly was flat out more motivated for that game.  Lets not forget however how they only put up 3 points in Washington in a must win game, and how they got completly hammered in Baltimore, a team the Giants absolutely took apart in the Meadowlands.

4. Regarding the Giants drama and late season swoon, I think the break is going to do them wonders, and Philly provided them the blueprint in the last game for the only way they can beat NYG, and that is to run the ball.  Westbrook dominated that game and you can bet every dollar you have NYG will be prepared this time around.  Westbrook carrying the ball 33 times took them completly by surprise, as he only toted it 13 times in their first meeting in Philly

5. McNabb is 3-7 in his last 10 vs the Giants, and part of that was when Philly had better teams then the one they have now, and NYG was much weaker than they are now.  McNabb has struggled vs the Giants for a great part of his career, and I highly doubt he's going to go into the meadowlands in the playoffs against a rested well coached team and play lights out.

Advantages for Philly

1. For the most part they have played extrememly well since the McNabb overtime fiasco.  They caught alot of teams in enviable spots but nonetheless they tore Dallas apart and won in a tough environment last week.

2. Plax being out puts way more pressure on Eli.

3. Dawkins is playing like an absolute beast right now.

** I am leaning NYG but am going to wait awhile to see if the number moves off of 4.  If it hits 3.5 I may buy the hook.

Thoughts welcome.

BigHans says:

Edit: Mcnabb is 4-6 last 10 vs NYG.

Initial Thoughts on SD/Pitt.

- If I wasn't worried about Ben's mental state after a concusion I would not hesitate to hammer Pitt, or rather, hammer LeBeau with extra time to prepare.  This Pitt defense is one of the best we've seen in the last ten years and assures they will be in every game they play.  I do not question it and I do not worry about their defense.

- However, I do worry about Ben covering 6 points in this spot.  I worry about him making bone-headed plays and throwing picks.  Its a very good thing for Pitt that SD has struggled to rush the passer this year, as Pitt's protection woes are well documented, although they have improved some recently.

- On the SD side, I question whether Sproles will be able to carry the load against a real run defense, particularly in what could be sloppy weather.  I seriously doubt LT plays in this game, considering the last three playoff games the Chargers have been involved in he has taken about 5 carries and then sat and sulked about it.  Can Rivers and Sproles carry the load against a lights out defense?

- I'm leaning Pitt because I am having a hard time making a case for SD moving the ball against them in these conditions, unless LeBeau over-blitzes and Sproles gets loose on a huge screen pass, or Taylor or Townsend get too aggresive on deep balls and get a few pass interference penalities.  Rivers was throwing the ball away constantly against the Colts whose pass rush isnt even close to as violent as Pitt's is.   Rivers also gets frustrated easily when pressured so I can see him forcing a few mistakes.

- Whatever way I go, this will be a small play.  I don't fully trust either team and have resigned myself that I am too much of a degenerate to watch this game without having some action on it.  It will be my least confident play of the week, regardless.

- All of it aside, I hope Pitt absolutely drills SD.  I love the way the Steelers play defense, it is a thing of beauty to watch.  SD has fucked me far more than any other team too.

Thoughts are more than welcome on this one.

As far as Balt and Tenn, try and look at a few things

Def- virtually the same but Reed pushes Balt ahead

Run- Tenn with a large edge

WR- Balt has the edge

QB- even

ST- Balt

I'll say it again Def wins big games. So in this case we have 2 big def teams but Balt has more def playmakers. Tenn has a better run game but it will be irrelevant. Both Qb's will be rushed to throw. I will take Balt in this game having a slight advt. They are way more hungry and Tenn is due to fall against a very good def team.

Thanks fellas.

Train - I think the previous game was Zona playing about as well as they can early on the road, and Carolina starting out very poorly.  Carolina still found a way to win.  I don't think the circumstance repeats itself this time around.

Mobcapper - You make some excellent points.  I think Balt has a slight edge to begin with on D, and I think Haynesworth could be gassed by the 4th.  The Ravens have been wearing teams out recently with the run game.  I'm still undecided but excellent points nontheless.

Carolina's defense is not that good ranked 19th in the NFL.  They are going against one of the top offenses in Cards.  Cards defense statistically is not that bad ranked 18th in the NFL.  Yes i know they played in the touted NFC west.   IMO the key in this game is turnovers, on the season Carolina is +6 Arizona even.  When Arizona has been killed on the road Warner has thrown 3 Ints  (Jets and Eagles).  If the turnover battle is close Arizona keeps it within 10.  If they don't this could be a shit show.   Warner hasn't played well on the road all year why should he start now?   Carolina is sick at home.  Delhomme is a seasoned quarterback Fox is a proven coach  Public pounding the underdog.  There is no doubt Carolina wins this game.  Not sure they cover 10.  My play this weekend will be a 7 point teaser:  Maybe my only play.

Carolina           -3

Philadelphia   +10

Pound it.

good writeup hans.

not sure about roth being mental.  that guy is always playing strange and yet manages to do whatever it takes to win.  the field being roughed up and slippery and the cold and the blockwall defense of the steelers.  chargers lose.  no doubt.  but by how much?  could be slim. i think ml on pitt.  there will be no lt.  he's done.  gates is weak.  the little dude will be neutralized.

like the panthers pick.  not sure about the high spread.  staying away from the giants game.  it's the manning choke factor that bothers me.

tenn takes it.  no doubt.  ravens been catching a lot of good press lately because of reed and lewis.  but flacco was stuck several times in that last game against miami.  he's a pretty average qb. can't overlook tits have had a 2 week bye.  they gave their starters time off for the last reg seasons game and they got an official bye. they're smart and capable offensively.  rested.  on their home turf.  i gave up 2 points.

HANS...Love your write-ups.I am a long time contributor here who has been real quiet this year as I have a lot going on outside of my degenerate life (lol) . But have followed and played avidly. You have great insight and we are uncannily on the same page in our thinking often.

My strong leans are CAR ,NYG, BAL ( by 3 and going to the big dance) and SD to cover. Unreal how in recent years and esp. when they are rematches, the resting faves on divisional weekend have fallen off the ATS  chart  but I still like 2 of the chalk BIG  this week.

A note of interest. 8 times this year the league has seen totals set as low as 34/34.5 and all 8 have gone UNDER.

Will check in later with possible write-ups if time permits.

MillerLiteBoy says:

should be a great weekend of games.  at this time I lean Car, Giants, Pitt and Balty but no bets as of yet.  Great writeups and I agree with them.  IN the Zona game not having Boldin is going to be a factor.  But if they run with Edge like they did last week that will help.
redskinsnut says:

As much as I hate laying chalk I am leaning towards every home favorite this weekend.  Anyone have any data on home teams ATS in the Divisional Round (hence the extra week off?)

Normally we pay a tax for home favorites but I am just not seeing it this weekend.
consiglieri says:
01/07/09 08:34PM
I like Carolina too. Things to worry about:

Arizona's run D looked pretty impressive last week.  I sure hope Carolina uses the pass then run formula. I think AZ;s secondary has issues.

Damn Edgerin James is playing for $$. Says he won't come back, wants someone else to pay him.  Never ceases to amaze me how much better athletes play when $$ is on the line.  You think the playoffs would be enough.

Don't underestimate the Titans, scoring against them will not be easy.  If they jump out to a lead it can get difficult. Jump on them in the second half if they have the lead.   Many will be chasing Baltimore, so that should be an added bonus. Of course, that is a big "IF."

Don't put too much stock if any in the Titans game against Pitt.  They simply wanted it more.  They had worked hard all season to get home field and they were not about to let it slip away.  Pitt was very tired after playing a slew of tough/close games and seemed very uninspired
mcbremps says:
01/07/09 08:59PM
Hans, great write up.  It's all about teasing the underdogs this week, except for the Steelers.
I'm leaning AZ with 10 or even buying some.  Playoff games are tough to predict, but I do like the AZ running defense to at least hinder the Panthers somewhat.  I think Steve Smith will be a big factor in this one, as the Cards are prepared for the run.  Will Delhomme throw picks?  This game will be a shootout for sure.  Either tease AZ or the over.
Loving the Ravens right now.  They did not let the Titans D in their prime this season to get to Flacco.  I expect a week of rest to be trouble for the Titans momentum.  Ravens are alive and well.  This will be a higher score than the 13-10 matchup earlier this season, but not much higher.
As for the Giants, they are ripe for a revenge play against the Eagles.  However, the Eagles couldn't be any hungrier than to play this one.  The Giants defense has looked pretty bad as of late.  The Eagles defense will not let Eli have a day, therefore the ground is where they will go, and they will get yardage, but how much?  McNabb saw a lot of pressure at the Vikes.  He will see similar pressure for this one, and I expect him to have a day.
Just line it up.  Big Ben has decent days, and bad days.  This game is all about homefield advantage and Steeler D.  Rivers will see the pressure and will feel it.  He's been fantastic as of late, but Sproles will get stopped without LT, not enough options for the Chargers make them predictable; they will run out of options.  Steelers are hungry for this win.  I expect it to be closer than 6 if Rivers is on, but I tease Steelers down.
Irisheyez says:
01/07/09 09:17PM
Everything adds up Carolina......that's why I'm leaning toward taking the 10.  Bolden might not play......last I checked......Breston has 1,000 yards and most of them came in the last 6 games I believe.  If Zona plays hard and gets a couple of big plays.....they can stay within the chalk.  Carolina will probably win......I'm just not sure yet........just remember......Jake Delhomie can be putrid at times.

If you really look a little deeper into the Pitt@ Tenn. You will see that Big Ben gave that game to them. Tenn scored 21pts off pitts miscues , not a good indication of their offensive pt production. The final was 31-14 ...my final was Tenn 10 Pitt 14.Tenn should have lost that game...Baltimore,with the revenge factor the defense, and I really like Flacco over Collins.Collins is going to resort to the Collins we all know when up against that type of defense .ie SB vs the same type.

ESPN made a good point, everyone wants to hate on delhomme but he is one of the currentbest postseason quarter backs in the nfl with a 5-2 career with a 92 passer rating in the playoffs, this guy is clutch, I remember few years ago going to the Giants in the wild card game and Jake figured out their defensive hand signals in the first drive of game and picked them apart.  He may not be the most talented qb in the leauge, but this guy knows how to win.

While agreeing to you write up about how Ravens defense will play against the Titans. In my view, it the Titans just play it slow and conservative they will win the game by forcing Flacco into one or two difficult situations. This is where savvy and experience really matter. The team that make the less mistake in this game will win. Some how, I believe the Titans will make less mistake in this game.

Hey Hans,

Always a pleasure reading your posts. Im glad you homed in on Baltimore because I liked them too but I know me and I probably would have talked myself out of that game. I think a combination of momentum and like you pointed out Mawae being out makes this a good spot for Balty. Ray Lewis is going to exploit that weakness  at center and Baltys Defense is going to cause Collins to hurry his throws and make mistakes. If they will be able to get a couple of sacks on Collins which I I see more probable than not, Balty will advance. Haynesworth being back worries me a little, but I think in the latter part of the game, he may have trouble hanging..

I also like your Giant pick, There supposed to get bad weather possible snow per espn radio. I think they have had time to prepare. Jacobs is back and the stakes are different in this game. Philly will see a different team. I will make the statement that my NYG will go through Philly like they went through Baltimore earlier in the season. NYG OL are going to move people and Earth, Wind, and Fire will go to work and have a good day. Jacobs will pound them. And dont let me mention NYG Defense. They will hound McNabb with different Blitz Packages. Great game regardless. Watch for Eli to connect with Toomer. I also think Philly will get outcoached as well.  Thanks and Best of Luck.

Great job dude.

San Diego+6/Under

The weather will play a factor as well as both teams will run ball control/possesion type offenses.  This will lead to a low scoring game.  Pittsburge has an awesome D, but San Diego has been playing much better D since Rivera took over.  They should have had 6 picks last week against Manning, but secondary cant catch.

My simple input would be......9.5 in a playoff game is 'NUTWORTHY'......If this is your bet of the week, I completly respect that. But not only does Arizona have the heart and desire (see coach, quarterback, running back and both wide outs) to win THIS GAME, but what about covering 9.5, or a bullshit back door cover. Arizona gets the ball back, 4 min to go, down 16. And Caroline puts in scrubs for injury purposes, lets Zona score a meaningless TD, and runs out the clock. This bet will go down to the wire, regardless of who is playing well.

I just think this is to many points to mess with....But GL to YOU

Alright, enough back and forth on this one.

Baltimore +3

Baltimore +10 Under 41 (7 Point Tease)

- I've been going back and forth on this one in this thread all week.  I've been trying to talk myself out of going with the Ravens, out of backing a rookie quarterback on the road against a legit team.  I just can't do it.

Reasons, in order of importance to me:

Mawae being out is a much, much bigger factor than many will realize.  Anyone who has played offensive line will understand why though.  Mawae is both the centerpiece (literally), leader, and brains behind this Titans offensive line.  Does everyone know what a center does besides snap the ball and block?  The Center is responsible for making blocking scheme adjustments at the line of scrimmage, for one.  Has anybody noticed how unorthodox Baltimore's blitz schemes are?  They come from EVERYWHERE, often disguising them brilliantly.  They send 4 guys through a gap.  They blitz both safeties at once.  This defense is built on intimidation, but more importantly, its built on confusion.   Anyone want to guess a major reason the Colts blew the Ravens out?  Because Jeff Saturday is probably the best in the business when it comes to making line call adjustments at the line of scrimmage.

- So, what is a backup center going to do against this defense?  Will Fisher have him do the line call adjustments, the blocking adjustments, or will he have someone else who is not used to doing it perform it instead?  Either way, it is not a good scenario.  Baltimore will most likely be flying free on several occasions, and last time I checked, Kerry Collins is the Titans quarterback.  Kerry Collins who has the mobility of a wheel chair patient after an all you can eat gorging at a Vegas buffet.  Kerry Collins who historically does not make good decisions under pressure, and tends to throw picks against tough defenses.

- Furthermore, a back up center vs Ngata is a major mismatch.  A major portion of the Titans ground game is running the ball up the middle, which is not going to happen on Saturday.  So where does that leave us?  What will Tennessee do?  They can try to stretch the field without vertical playmakers, which is really the only way this Baltimore defense can be had.  Unfortunatley for Tennessee they really don't possess any vertical threats.  They can pray that Chris Johnson gets to the edge and burns the Ravens on an over-sized run blitz, which is probable, but how many times will it happen.  I really can't see any feasible scenario where The Titans will consistently move the ball against this defense in this situation.

- Baltimore isn't exactly going to have a field day either on offense.  Flacco has to play mistake free like last week but he also has to increase and improve his accuracy and performance.  Tennessee is not a great blitz team but they have stuffed the run most of the season and they have some playmakers in the secondary.  I have talked about this at length but I think this is going to be a tug of war until late in the game when Haynesworth starts wearing down.  It is almost physically impossible for a guy coming off a bum knee to sustain a physical presence for an entire game in a smashmouth situation.  I think Balty eventually wears them down.

Coaching, other factors:

Fisher has the experience edge no doubt, but his playoff record isn't exactly world beating.  He has also made some curious decisions at certain times this year (Houston as an example).  Harbaugh has proven to be an effective leader so far so I don't see any scenario where Baltiomre does not come out fired up.  Rex Ryan will not be out-schemed by anyone on the Tennessee sidelines.

Bottom line:

I really tried to make a case for Tennessee, mostly because everyone is hammering Baltimore.  I am not going ignore some glaring mismatches this time.  Tennessee has the rest advantage and I fully expect them to give a strong effort, but I think the key variable of the Baltimore Blitz vs Collins and a backup center is too much to ignore.  The middle of the line is going to be caving like Robert Downey Jr with a plate full of fresh cut coke in front of him.

Love all the feedback guys.

I will most likely be locking in NYG -4, will write it up once I play it.

I still feel great about Carolina.  I can see why people are confident in Zona after they shut down Turner last week but I still maintain this is a much different team on the road, and Carolina is twice as physical as Atlanta.  Turner was great this year no doubt but Carolina is a much more pounding team, which spells bad news for the Cardinals IMO.  THe biggest worry is Delhomme, although if the run game is going good he doesn't have to do much and play action will be wide open, which again is bad news for Carolina as all Steve Smith needs is a slight hesitation by a corner biting on a fake and its lights out to the house.  Unless Delhomme plays the absolute worst game of his life I think Carolina wins BIG.

Balty Tennessee has got me all twisted up.  Its actually pissing me off that I can't get a read on this game.  I'm starting to lean Tennessee but am having issues backing Collins against the Ravens D.  The other thing that gives me pause is the conditioning of Haynesworth, who is by far the most vital piece to a Titans victory in this game as Balty has been wearing teams out on the ground and getting big hit runs late in games.  I will probably puss out and tease Balty and the Under up.

Pitt/SD - A little crossed up here still too.  Trying to think with my head and not my heart, as while I am not a life long Steelers fan I absolutely LOVE tough defenses and I respect the hell out of what they do.  At the same time I despise San Diego.  I am highly confident that Pitt wins this game but the -6  is giving me serious pause.  May have to puss out and take the moneyline.

Of course, all of this hinges on how well I do in the BCS Championship tomorrow night.  Not playing the side but I am laying wood on the under.

Making NYG -4 an Official Play.

I already posted several reasons for this above.  I resepct the way Philly is playing but I think people are forgetting too quickly how the Giants rolled through this league for most of the season.  Losing Plax was a blow but they dominated by smashing the ball on the ground unmercifully.  I respect Philly's D, they are fast and attacking, but I think they will wear down late in this game if the Giants keep pounding them.  I think the week off is going to do the Giants wonders.  I think they are going to get back to business in this game.  I think Philly is very suspect on the road.  They don't have the benefit of facing Tarvaris and Childress this week, they are facing a rested team with a hammer for a coach that is going to whip the Giants asses into shape after their recent swoon.

Other factors:

The Giants will be much much better prepared this time around.  They have had time to gameplan around not having Plax, they have their pride to defend, and I really don't think Donovan is going to win twice in the same year in the Meadowlands.  Granted we have to cover 4 here, so I am banking on Jacobs wearing this team down and the Giants stepping on their throats late to secure and guard against a backdoor threat.  I won't try to take away from what Philly has done recently, they have for the most part played extremely well, but I maintain they have either caught teams in very poor spots (Dallas, Arizona, the Giants), or they have beaten teams they matchup well against (Minneosta, Cleveland, even Dallas qualifies here).

The Bottom Line is the Giants will be prepared for a heavier dose of Westbrook this time, Reid should know by now they have been way more succesful when they try to run.  The Giants got caught with their pants down last time which is very rare for this team and for this coach.  They take care of business this Sunday.

Alright I've been thinking about this one alot, I've disected it as best I could and am going to bet with my nemesis, as painful as it is for me.

Playing

SD +6

- Again some of you know how much I hate this SD team.  I also have a huge man crush on the Steelers Defense; great, punishing defense is one of my favortie things about football.  In no way shape or form am I trying to go against Pitts D, or do I think San Diego is going to go in and light up the scoreboard.  This play for the most part is going to be a fade of Roethlisberger covering 6 points, and below are the reasons why:

There's certain games and scenarios that keep coming back to me in deciding this play, theres alot of them actually.  I'm going to do this in quick hit format.

- I would actually feel better about Pittsburgh if they were on the road.  Ben has had some struggles in home playoff games in his career, and this was when he was healthy.

Examples:

2004 season, when they went 15-1, Ben played terribly against the Jets in the Divisional round and Pitt needed OT to win, and that was with a Jets kicker that missed two easy field goals.  NE came into Pitt the next week and smoked them.  2005 season they were road warriors and everyone knows what happened.  2006 was forgettable, but last year everyone should remember how Jax came in and handled them for the second time on their own turf in the same year.  Ben had a few strong moments but for the most part played a very erractic game and was a huge reason Pitt didn't move on.

A few games from this season that stand out: The Colts game, the Giants game, and the Dallas game.  Ben played poorly in all three, and it was the Steelers defense that won the Cowboys game for them.  Ben also played poorly against Baltimore earlier in the season and the Steelers almost blew it.

- Pitt has gone 3-4 against playoff teams, and the three games they won were by a combined 8 points.  Take away a few very fortunate finishes for Pitt and this number could be worse.  It should also be added that Pitts most impressive wins have come on the road this season.  I am aware of San Diego's regular season record against Playoff teams (0-5).  However, they lost those 5 games by a combined 19 points.  So we have Pitt averaging a win of less than 3 points per game in the games they won against playoff teams, and San Diego losing by an average of less than 4 points per game in the ones they lost.  Add in that San Diego got outright moosed on a couple of those losses and we have a precursor and logic that means this game should be close.

- So now that we have established the baseline for this, lets add in two very relevant and important factors:

1. Ben is coming off a concussion: For a guy who's decision making is questionable at times to begin with, this is in no way shape or form a good thing for Pitt.  All it will take is one solid bell ringing and he could be seeing stars or have clouded vision.  Alot of people are saying they would be better off with Leftwhich which I think is ludricrious, and if he enters the game asking him to cover 6 in a playoff game is ludicrious.  I don't think Ben will be on his game and with an unusally unreliable Pitt running attack this year this is a very questionable scenario for Pitt backers.

2. San Diego is riding momentum and playing well.  Look, it is documented I hate this team.  I think Rivers is a complete tool, I can't stand Turner, I think LT is a pussy, etc, etc.  Rivers however is a top 3 QB this year and is evolving into a leader.  He gets frustrated and thrown off his game at times but he has proven he has guts.  I think Sproles gives them a better shot than LT would, although again he is going to find it tough going for most of the game.  I think he'll break one big play which should be enough to keep the game inside the number.

- Bottom Line, I think Pitt will win this with their defense, but I just could not bring myself to lay 6 with Ben in this situation.  He has played poorly often this year, has struggled on this very field in the playoffs, and is now dealing with what is for all intensive purposes a brain injury.  I think he is going to make a few mistakes that is going to force PItts D to really amp it up.  San Diego may win the field position battle and has a special teams edge.

I see this going to the wire.  I hope I'm wrong and Pitt drills them but I just don't see it happening.

Excellent thoughts Cali, we agree on the NYG.

I think alot are disrespecting Tennesee, much like the Giants they dominated most of the season.

But heres what scares me about them: I don't think they are going to out-physical Baltimore, as almost nobody can or does.  Second, we saw what happened to this team once Haynesworth went down.  Its hard to believe one player can have that a large of impact but in their case he does.  He is going to play in this game, but I really question how he will hold up.  The guy is a fucking monster but he's also human.  He didn't practice this week and he has a bum knee.  I really question how that will hold up over the course of what will certainly be a smashmouth game.  Baltimore absolutely has to take the ball out of Flacco's hands as much as possible, he played poorly against Miami and despite his success is still a rookie.  There is going to be a heavy heavy dose of  McGahee and McLain in this game.  I think Tennesee will come out fired up, but I worry about the later stages of the game, where the pressure is higher on Collins and Van Den Bosch and Haynesworth will be wearing down.

Finally, if Mawae doesn't go that is a major, major blow to the Titans.  Ngagta will eat their backup center alive.  The Titans rely on Lendale to soften up defenses to open things up for Brown, but he is going absolultely nowhere.  Mawae is also a huge leader on the team and is crucial to their psyche.

My lean, as of right now, is Balt +10 Under 41.

Hans, I love the insight as always... Here are my thoughts:

Bal @ Tenn

Tennessee continues to answer the bell at home, and Van Den Bosch and Haynesworth will play.  I think that makes the difference here.. I am over doubting Tennessee at home.  I think Fisher has them playing a Nose Tackle sized chip on their shoulder, and I loo for Tennessee to out physical the Ravens at home.  Collins can handle the pressure.. Bottom line, is the Music City will be rocking this weekend..

SD @ Pitt

Big Ben is turning it over quite a bit, and his recent health cannot help things.  Most imortantly, we are looking @ a different Defensive Football team in San Diego.  They have adjusted to Ron Rivera, and they are playing great. They are finally getting the pressure on the QB that they lost with the injury to Merriman.  I think SD matches up fantastic against the Steelers, and I look for them to win the game outright.  Sad to say, but at this point in his injury pleagued season, LT is not nearly as good for this matchup as Sproules.  San Diego is going to exploit Blitzburgh through the screen pass, just like they have the last several teams they have played... As great as LeBeau is with his Blitz schemes, Turner is as good in his screen game.  Don't worry about Mighty Mouse being gassed, because he is total energy, and San Diego is playing like a wounded animal.  Finally, San Diego has dispensed with their "expectations" and are realizing their potential.  I'll take Rivers over Roethisberger, and look for the Super Chargers to shock the world, and move on to the AFC Championship.

Philly @ NYG

Jacobs is back... Watch out... I look for the Giants to run it all night, and give out a good ol fashioned Ass Woopin to the Eagles.. Jacobs has averaged 5.5 ypg this season against Philly, and once again, the Giants O-Line has something to prove.  New York rolls in this one.

Good thoughts Hans... One more to add... Haynesworth is now in a contract negotiation due to his pro bowl selection.. I really see the rest/injury keeping him fresh in this one... And I do not think there will be a more motivated player in the Stadium that day... Van den Bosch is a V-8 motor.. He just goes and goes.. If he is healthy enough to play, and he should be fine... I agree that Mawae is a bad injury.. That IS a key point.  It would be a much bigger injury if the Titans were on the road, due to the line changes and crowd noise.. If Mawae can't go, then Leroy Harris should benefit from the Home Crowd.  It should be a hell of a game!  BOL Hans

Big Hans...I said I would drop back in with my picks before the games.Love your insights as I posted earlier  this week. We are often on the same wavelength. Now , I do read a lot of these other posts  and obviously any well crafted writer can spin a fine bias on their points in alignment with their selection so please take what I am about to write with a grain of salt.

I like BAL 16-13 OR 19-13

When these two teams met in week # 5 ,Flacco was  still wearing diapers and had thrown 7 picks in 5 games and now he has come a long way.BAL really took it to them and were up 285-210 in yardage as well.A phantom interfence call on Suggs gave TEN a game I feel BAL would have won.He has thrown only 5 in his last 12 games.Cam Cameron has opened up the pkg. recently with the big play capability and they have been finding the receivers.

In as far as the rap that BAL only beats weaklings, let's be real- their two losses to PIT were both by 3 pts. and one was in OT. They were controlling PIT and up 10-6 when we had a call reversed that I felt lacked sufficient evidence to overturn.Otherwise with 43 sec. to go HC Tomlin is forced to make the toughest decision of his short career.BAL  was swinging with the big boys and easily could have walked out with 2 of those 3 THREE pt. losses to TEN/PIT.

Now, they have gone into DAL and bitch slapped them and just knocked off an 11-5 divisional winner (MIA) where the veteran QB lost the turnover game 5-0 (4 INT) ( should have been 6-0) if Reed didn't let his surefire 3rd INT of the game slip thru his hands.

These guys are gellin' like a felon ( props to Dr. Scholl) and rested divisional home teams have not fared well in the last few years.Mawae's absence under center is HUGE!...Leroy Harris will be asked to stop the Samoan ploughhourse DT Haloti Ngota ( like that is going to happen) plus you couple that with his signal calling going up against a savvy cerebral thinker like Lewis....can you say mismatch to the nth degree.

Lastly Collins is a very good intermediate thrower but if he tries to stretch the field , you can be sure he better account for Ed Reed, who may go down as the best ball-hawking safety the game has ever seen.Collins is not very accurate in his long range throws.

I did notice how bad Flacco was in the 2nd hal vs. a pass rush that is a lot tamer than what he will see today and they were tiring on defense in the 4th Q. and are now asked to vanquish the mighty Titans in their homefield on a short week in what is their 4th road game in 5 weeks but I feel one team is a lot more improved and that momentum will be their keeper. No one will know how healed Vanden Bosch is from that surgery until he gets battle tested in the trenches and I know for a fact that Haynesworth is far from 100%.

I feel this rookie QB ain't your average rook and he will win the turnover battle between him and Collins by a +2 margin. He is unflappable even when he's getting the kitchen sink thrown at him.Ravens will have to be very careful to prevent Chris Johnson from busting some big ones but you know that the Titans will have their hands full with up and coming running sensation FB McLain mixed with McGahee. I do not see Ron Rice on the injury reports yet I hear no talk of him this week.

My time is short as I have guests coming but here are the rest of my picks for TOTAL REMATCH  week.

CAR 34 AZ 17

NYG 24 PHI 17

PIT 21 SD 16

CAR will roll these guys and NYG will show everyone that all is fine in NYC and they will quell all of this talk about the resurging Iggles. Gimme a break.McNabb in a big game....does the biased Philly fanship forget the game vs. WAS ( also a must win at the time).I knew they would smoke DAL and the game vs. the Gmen in NYC-I even called for an exact 6 pt. win by PHI..it was my P.O.W....so many things were not right in that game for NYG and it was a nothing game as they had a 2 game lead on CAR at the time for HFA  all the way through.NO Jacobs, the "incident" the nite before which def affected Antonio Pierce  and Jason Tuck was sick.Their coaching and home field will bode well for the Gmen this week I truly feel...we'll see tomorrow.

Enjoy the games....WHAT A WEEKEND!

If all goes the way I predict we will have a TOTAL REMATCH weekend next week as well!

====================

Somethin to think about is, Chargers are a BEAST at home and in December under Norv Turner going like 9-1. This is January and they are on the road and Chargers tend to choke in the playoffs, all trends working against them against Pitt. There's no way Sproles will be able to run up on Pitt D like they did against the Colts small DL which are similar to Denver's DL. Pitt DL are alot bigger and faster. Sproles will understand why tomorrow he is NOT an every down back. LT is doubtful from what I heard but we shall see, they'll have a chance if LT is playing but I seriously doubt it, against a Pitt DL. To end my rambling, Chargers are the worst defensive team in the playoffs, that should let you know Pitt will be moving up/down the field on them all day. I believe with the extra wk off, Ben will be fine. Line opened at -6 and I am seeing -6.5 at a couple of other sites, the sharps are already jumping on Pitt -6 early.

Not that this matters at all, but just played with Baltimore in Tennessee on Madden 09.

Baltimore 24-6

Flacco 13-15 179 Yards 2 TDs 0 INT

McGahee 21 carries 104 yards TD

Tennessee 171 yards total offense, 89 coming at the end of the game where the computer says "fuck you youre not stopping me no matter what"

I am in shock right now.  Starting out 2-0 but I have to say I have never come close to being on a side as lucky as the Ravens were today.  Absolutely unbelievable, almost every single conceivable bounce, break, and call went to the Ravens.

Aside from getting big time lucky, the only thing I capped right about this game was Tennessee's center had two bad snaps which cost the Titans points in the first half.  Other than that, wow.

I would be in jail right now if I had backed Tennessee.

Agreed that Pitt pulls this out, but I see the value in the +_6.  I thought about going for a middle and playing Pitt moneyline as well but I didn't want to eat the -250.

I'm pretty much referring to the fact that the last three playoff games they played he has taken about 4-5 carries, done nothing than sat and looked like he almost wanted his team to lose.  LT in his first 6 years may have been top 10 all time, no question, he was a great athlete.  I think he's done now, has been declining for the last two years, and this has reflected itself in his play, and his attitude, calling out coaches, sulking, talking shit in the press, etc.

I know he has been injured but I just don't see a warrior mentality out of LT anymore.  He think he's cashed in his chips and is checking out.  He has already brought up retirement, at the beginning of this year he mentioned it.

I'll save everyone the trouble.

Holy shit what a horseshit fucking call on Carolina.  Nice effort today Delhomme.  You really came out and played like a champ.  Take your cajun accent and your hand waving theatrics and your feigned dissapointment and shove it.

Anyway, congrats to Cards backers, I actually am happy for Zona and company for whipping the Panthers.

This will also open up the gambling opportunity of the century if NYG wins next week.

Congrats Philly backers.

Well, its pretty obvious that this is one of the screwiest and most backward weekends in NFL history.

Fuck it, Might as well embrace it.

All I can say at this point is go Cards.  If Carolina somehow comes back to win by 2 or some bullshit I will be sick.

Warner is a class act.  Delhomme is a piece of shit.

i took the pitt ml.  not sure you call it pussing out as much as a smart move.  dicking around with what if 3's or 6's is stupid.  pitt wins this with a superior advantage of field, coaching, defense.  roth been roughed up before.  doing this virtual m-r-i game with his concussion is lame.  the guy's not a vegetable.  he plays like one sometimes but it's not a game breaker.  take the ml.

good write up on sd but calling LT a pussy?  that's not cool.  not sure if you play sports but groin injury is not a fake it till you make it injury.  he's a phenomenal athlete.  norv is the pussy.
