The NBA offseason so far

When was the last time you had EVERY top team improve and make a big time signing?  Looking back at most of the recent champions...they didn't make any major moves during the offseasons and basically just added a few bench and role players to help out and fill in any voids.  This offseason has been the complete opposite of that

Lakers ----- Ron Artest

Magic ------ Vince Carter

Cavs  ------- Shaquille O'Neal

Celtics ------ Rasheed Wallace

Simply amazing.  I love it.

even though the magic signed carter, losing turk is not good for them at all.....the celts signed RW but lost powe, and the lakers signed artest but lost a great budding star in trevor ariza....you also forgot jefferson to the spurs....I agree these look right now as great signings, and I love the addition of wallace to the celts....all these 5 teams seem to be separating themselves from the rest of the NBA.

100% agreed, but most people here are in love with VC's flashyness but forget he lacks a true basketball IQ.

Didn't the Spurs do the same thing with Brent Barry a few years ago in a trade w/ Seattle?

Only in the NBA....

I sure had been a busy offseason. Good teams are just getting better. One team that I think made some horrible moves is Dallas

PEACE!

The people saying that have never truly watched Vince Carter on a consistent basis. THE MAN DOES NOT CARE. He simply wants to collect his paycheck and go home.

I don't buy this garbage either that he "was on a bad team" in Toronto and New Jersey so why would he care? What a load of shit. When he was on good teams in Toronto he didn't give a shit. Sure he's a good player but he floats way too much and you can really rough him up on the defensive end. He's a worse defensive player than Turkoglu.

I'll always remember when he was with the Raptors on the morning of Game 7 with a shot at the Eastern Conference Finals on the line, this guy flew to North Carolina to attend his graduation!!!! And the game was a late afternoon start. He arrived back in Philly about an hour and a half before the game started, and he played miserably but despite his no show the Raptors had a chance to win at the buzzer but Wince promptly threw up a brick. This bum has a real will to win .

His lack of toughness, leadership and clutch play, and lethargy at times have dogged him his whole career. Sure, he has his moments but this man will never win a championship he's too fragile of a prayer.

All I have to say to those who say that losing Turkoglu and Courtney Lee while adding Wince Carter is basically a wash.............................

Good luck this season, Orlando Magic.

What makes the Orlando Magic GO is Mighty Mouse [Jameer Nelson] and Superman 2 [Dwight Howard].

And then they also have another matchup nightmare with Rashard Lewis pulling the other team's "4" away from the paint out to the three point line.

So right there, they have three ALL STARS before Vince Carter gets off the plane from NJ to Orlando.

When has VC ever played with three all stars?   ANSWER is he never has.

VC has a new lease on his NBA life/career and this will really be his best shot to win a title....all Orlando is asking of him is for him to give them what Turkulu gave them ---- I think he will give them that and a little bit more --- which is a player that can get his shot off without using pick and roll --- Turkulu needed pick and roll --- Vince can be effective with it or without it and gives them more athleticism.....is anyone refuting that VC is more athletic than Turkulu?

VC will no longer be bored, he will be vinsanity!

I actually think Boston is the team to beat now, but Orlando will be their opponent in the Eastern Conference Finals (cleveland still needs to make another move.....they are resting their laurels on a 38 yr old shaq to be the shaq of ole' and they may lose that bet).

westcoastTrojan says:

I'll guarantee you this move affect Rashard Lewis more than anyone else on that team. Lewis wont be as affective with VC. He doesnt move well without the ball (or with for that matter). I can already see him standing still and watching VC do his thing.

Look, Orlando picking up VC would have been a good move if they didnt lose the following players: Gortat, Turk, Lee, and Rafer, although he was easily expendable.

Would you have made that trade?  I think not. You cant be honest and say Orlando improved. You cant. If they lost Turk and gained VC, ok, I would have said FANTASTIC move. But thats not the case here.

slipnslide says:

ORLANDO IS WORSE NOW. Courtney Lee was developing into a great bench player, Rafer was solid backing up Jameer, Turkoglu was a HUUUGE loss...and VC only barely makes up and slightly more for the loss of Turk.

They lose bench depth...they lose 3, 3-pt shooters. They lose Lee who looks like he might develop into Richard Hamilton in another year...and who's gonna run the point when Jameer isnt on the floor? He cant play 48 minutes a game.

And due to VC's age their window for a title just got shortened even more. Shoulda kept their core together....IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT!!

richardtonsj says:
07/07/09 02:26AM

of the 4 big signings that you mentioned, I just think that they are either too old or might cause some chemistry problems with their respected teams.  Are they willing to become role players or wanting more?

slipnslide says:
07/07/09 02:27AM
Starting 5 are maybe SLIGHTLY better with VC...bench takes such a horrible hit that it overwhelms the VC gain. Review how ORL outscored CLE by large margin when both benches were on the floor. IMO that was a huge difference in the series...now they no longer have that edge.
ct1016 says:
07/08/09 07:39PM
I think Rasheed clearly will do what is asked of him.

Of all the off season big name free agent moves thus far, I think he is the only one that will come off the bench.....which means he must fit in simply by now being the 6th man.

CMJohnson1 says:
07/08/09 11:58PM
richardtonsj....one key thing though is that 3 of them have no rings.  So getting older should be a motivating factor.  As far as Shaq and the Cavs, I just think it's the other option for LeBron that will be key

Dif between LA adding Artest/Orl adding VC versus Spurs adding RJ is LA and Orl lost valuable contribution players.  Spurs lost nothing.  If Spurs are relatively healthy next yr come play-off time, tough to see them not being fav to win it all.  5 dimes got them at +1400, which is rediculous high.

Another team adding w/o subtraction is Bos w/ Sheed.  Sportsbook got them to win East at +275.  Considering Orl nightmare matchup Hedo causes team in play-off, replacing him w/ VC is major step down.  I'll take my chances w/ Bos against Cle w/ these odds anytime.  Shaq maybe motivated but his body won't be able to hold up.
CMJohnson1 says:

Same point for Shaq I give to the Spurs gmitran...they are old.  Timmy Duncan is old...Ginobili and Parker have both had health issues.  They are still a damn good team though and there is good value in them.

Hill stays in Phoenix

The veteran forward chose to remain with Phoenix yesterday, declining

offers from the Celts and New York Knicks and instead agreeing to a

two-year contract worth approximately $7 million with the Suns.

Boston now may take Moon

Tim Duncan is not that old...31 or 32 [Same age as Kobe]

But the key about Duncan's game is that he is not trying to over power anyone.

Kenny Smith once said this about Dwight Howard

"when players come into the league like a Dwight Howard or Michael Jordan or Shaq that has overpowering skills and athletism over their opponets -- they can jump higher, fly across the court and overpower their opponents............those type players with those raw abilities need to learn the game as if they do not have those abilities............becuase as you get older, there will come a time when you will not jump higher, fly across the court or overpower all of your opponents.............thats why players must perfect basic basketball skills..........FUNDAMENTALS.......becasue as you get older then you can still have a career and be effective in the NBA if you perfected basic basketball fundamental skills"

CMjohnson, I referred back to that comment, to say this,

Tim Duncan is Mr. Fundamental.....all he does is rebound, score in the post, hit mid range jumpers and defend the rim........he came into the league with those skills..........all the Spurs need is for him to keep on doing what he did last year.

IMO I think he still has 2 to 3 years of being able to do just that at an all star level.

Other team in the conference finals, not mentioned, the nuggets, even helped themselves getting Ty Lawson to backup Billups..much better option than anthony carter.
CMJohnson1 says:
07/13/09 05:55PM
ct1016...Duncan isn't necessarily old based on his age, but he's logged a SHITLOAD of games in his career.  He'll still put up good numbers, but he's not the same on the defensive end IMO
gmitran says:
07/13/09 09:17PM
CMJ1 - Duncan is 4 yrs younger than Shaq but he's kept himself in much, much better shape than Shaq.  Adding McDyess/Blair should relieve Duncan of reg season minutes.  Parker (27 yo) played in 72 games last yr, the one health concern is Manu (32 yo).  At same time, he's off the bench so he usually ave just 27-28 min.

It's more than just being healthy, Spurs big 3 + Pop has shown the pedigree to win it all.  I would think Duncan like to win one more to top Shaq/Kobe 4 titles given his window is closing.

KnightofSorrow says:
07/14/09 07:19AM
Gortat back in Orl, personally being a compatriot I don't like it. In Dallas he would play much more than in orl, and they also signed Bass, so that could even mean playing less time than during the last season for Gortat. But I guess it's money...

Afflalo from det to denver
ct1016 says:
07/14/09 09:34AM

Yes, Duncan does have a lot of miles on him.

I did not see him slowing down that much last year....hopefully, the Big Fundamental will have a nice year since the Spurs management tried very hard to put the right pieces around him.

CMJohnson1 says:
07/14/09 10:14AM
I will never argue the fact that the Spurs are a great team...I'm just saying that IMO their biggest concern will be their age and durability.
Borat38 says:
07/14/09 10:20AM

Spurs are as durable as Homer Simpson on Duff Beer.

All day, baby!

ct1016 says:
07/14/09 11:34AM

Agreed.

I once had a frat brother that made it in the NFL [NY Jets Starting FS for 12 years] and he said that every YEAR these guys are getting younger/faster/stronger.

So yes, you are correct, age and durability is always a challenge in professional sports....especially when the young whipper snappers are trying to take your job and get that  and the fame, etc..etc...etc..
