Inside the #1 ranked pass defense

Take this for what it's worth, but I'm not sure how good this pass defense truly is.  In fact, I'm not sure anyone really knows.  Many take stats for face value but that can be dangerous...in fact, it is. I believe this Sunday's match up comes down to one thing....Can the Jets stop SD passing attack.

On to my thoughts....In general, the AFC East is statistically solid against the pass, except for Miami.  Below are each teams defensive rankings against the pass.

Pass defense rankings
Jets #1
Bills #2
Pats #12
Miami #24

I find it ironic that the #1 and #2 overall pass defense resides in the same conference...that is until you see the pass offenses in the conference.  Below are each teams pass offense rankings.

Pass offense rankings
Pats # 3
Miami # 20
Bills #30
Jets #31

Each defense see's some of the worst pass offenses in the league, except for NE.  NE is the only team to present a threat thru the air and except for 1 game against Buff, Brady and co. has torched each of these defenses.

Miami's low ranking can be explained by their competition.  They have faced some of the stiffest competition in terms of pass offense.  They went up against 7 teams in the top 10 in passing...including each of the top 5!  If the Jets faced this kind of schedule and put up those numbers I'd be sold.  But they haven't.  They faced a total of 5 pass offenses in the top 10, but really 4 as Indy rested their players in the 2H.  In these 4 games, that 150.4 they allow becomes 220.5.  They also were torched for 192 yds in just the 1H vs Manning.

Out side of that, the competition they faced is literally at the bottom half of the league in passing offense.  This includes Atl (#14) in what was a windy game that totaled 17 pts, Jacksonville (19), Tenn (23), Tampa (24), Cin (26) 2x, Carolina (27) and I've already mentioned the AFC East rankings.

It should be interesting and we will know after Sunday.

Interesting stuff !! Considing SD had the best ave gain per pass at 7.96.

The Jets defense was sooooo dominating they lead the league giving up 4.24 yards per play, that was good for .56 better than the 2cd best team Green Bay at 4.8, to find the same difference of .56 number 2 Green Bay would have to go all the way down to number 18 at 5.34

It's rare to find a offense or defense this far ahead of the 2cd best, regardless of strength of schedule.

HERE'S MY QUESTION, "If playing a easy schedule makes it easy for a team to put-up dominating stats as the Jets have done then why couldn't the Pats or Bills do the same against many of the same offenses" ?????

Pats defense gave-up 5.44 yards per play, 19th

Bills 5.02, 9th

Let's see how the Jets performed against the high flying offenses this season.................

Pats, Jets defense gave-up 7 yards per pass and 4.6 yds per pass to Brady and the Pats. Brady averaged 7.27 per pass, ranking 6th best, the Jets defense held Brady under his season average both games, one by .27, the other by a whopping 2.67 yards per pass

Saints, Jets held Brees to 5.9 yards per pass, Brees ave 7.72, ranking 2cd best. Jets held Brees to a whopping 1.82 yards per pass below his season average.

Texans, Jets held Scuab to 4.1, Scuab ave 7.53, ranking 3rd best, Jets held Scuab to a whopping 3.43 yards below his season average.

Atlanta, Jets held Ryan to 4.5, Ryan ave 5.98, ranking 17th, Jets held Ryan to a whopping 1.48 yards per pass below his season average.

Only 1 of the better offenses and QB was able to ave more per pass than his season ave and that was P. Manning who only played 1 half, we don't know what the Jets D could of done in the 2cd half had he played the entire game.

Should be interesting if the Jets can now hold down Rivers and the number 1 average per pass play offense.

And now they hold Rivers and his Chargers to a 6.7 ave gain per pass, 1.26 below his season average, wow, that defense did it again holding a top QB more than a full yard under his season average.
