Here the deal. My daughter graduates college Suma Cum Laude 3.95 cumulative average. Passes all of her teaching requirements on her first try.  Does an outstanding job student teaching. Has tons of awards, accolades, and recommendations. Goes for 5 interviews at various school districts. She claimes the interviewers were extremely impressed with her answers. As of now no one has offered her not even a substitute position. What is wrong with this picture?

Need to know someone. What State do you live in?

It depends where you are teaching and what you are teaching.  I teach in Minnesota.  I know for some positions like elementary teacher there are over 300 applicants for a job.  Take a look at some of the job postings in your area.  Chances are the positions your daughter is applying for are very competitive and many of the other candidates have the same qualifications as her.  And they might also have more experience, which ultimately in any profession means much more than good grades or a good interview.  She should look to get some experience in a part of the country that is in need of teachers, like the inner city.

I just sent out your description from your 1st post to all my facebook friends who are either teachers or administrators in their respective school systems. I'll post their responses.

Again, which State is your daughter living?

Ive heard that Australia is hiring teachers like crazy..great economy and all.

In seriousness, depending on where she wants to teach and how much compensation it could be very difficult to find a job or quite easy.

Schools are laying off teachers due to budget constraints and that people dont want to pay more property taxes to support the need in higher demand areas.

I wouldnt want to teach in a district where the turnover is high and pay is low, that is no way to start a career, maybe she could check out any Charter or private schools versus just looking at municipal districts per say.

I'll get back to this thread in a day or 2. I sent emails to 3 teachers (female), a principal, and an assistant superintendent who all work in Massachusetts.

Perseverance and patience.  The first job is probably the hardest to get.

We had a 6th grade position open in my building prior to summer...after four days there were already over 600 applicants.  Times are crazy right now.  A lot of good teachers looking for work.

Be patient...and network, network, network.

Yes my friend.  I excelled in high school and did well in college as well

What I asked was a genuine, legit question.  I could have said something like:

"Post nude pics of your daughter's tits?"
"Does you daughter had big tits?"

........................................

He asked a gambling forum full of men why his daughter can't get a job?  Maybe it's time for a boob job

like others have said it is all who you know. my dad had never taught a day in his life and did not have any teaching degrees or certificates and he got a job as a teachers assistant dealing with autistic kids because he knew the principle.

What is your daughter's grade level....Bachelors, Masters, PhD, which college, and what is her degree in. My buddy is talking to a Principal tomorrow (that he's known since he was a kid) and he's sure he'll be asked certain questions. I sent you a friend request and you can PM me the info. I also have a few additional questions. Thanks

I got one response so far from a buddy in Massachusetts who passed it on. This is it verbatim except I changed my name to my covers name and he added a few comments in ( ) for clarification. Give me a few more days for the other responses.

Hi Chilitokid,
I feel so badly for your friend's daughter, and that's such

a hard question to answer. You're right about the economy, and that

just makes the market even more competitive...new kids tend to get eaten

up. I hired a Spanish teacher this year similar to her...valedictorian

at (so-and-so) HS, class of 2005...really young, no experience to speak of

other than student teaching. For me, it's all about getting the kids to

sit in their seats and listen to you so you can use all of those

accolades to the fullest. Truthfully, I didn't even speak to this woman

in Spanish until half-way through the interview (she was applying for a Spanish teaching job). I was more concerned

with how she would handle the diverse population...not just ethnically,

but financially, one parent family situations, etc. Would she be

empathetic, would she be able to teach to what's in front of her and

make allowances, adjustments, etc.? Sometimes you have to go with your

gut, and that's what i did. There were 13 candidates for this one job,

but I liked her, which is really "ballsy" of me, so we'll see. What's

her (your friend's daughter) grade level and subject area? I'd suggest she try and apply in a

Catholic school if nothing breaks...at least she'll get experience...

even apply for a substitute teaching position so she can get in and

keep her ears open. these options are bad financially, but good if

she's passionate about teaching.
One more thing...sometimes jobs

open up right before the start of the year...a teacher will decide to

take another position last minute...
Hope this helps!

I am a teacher in PA and it was hard as hell to 1). Get a damn interview and 2). Get hired.

And I am just talking about charter schools in Philly.  Hell, the school districts wouldn't even give me the time or day.  One thing I do know about the education world though (from my experience and my friends): These schools drag their feet and hire at the last minute, so don't give up hope yet.

I taught for over 12 years in So. Cal. and am fortunate to have left the public school system to now make a living sports betting. Anyways, the teaching profession today is not about what is in the best intrest of the student, its all about what is in the best intrest of the politicians. People who have no knowledge about child development and learning. They equate words such as accountibility and tougher standards as good teaching. In the classroom this becomes sit down, shut up, listen to me as i fill your empty head with facts so you can be prepared for a standardized test, a test that really only measures the income and educational level of the parents, so that I can get a good review from my principal and they can get a pat on the back from the superintendant and they can get their contract renewed by the school board and the mayor who has no control over the school district can say he is tough on education. "For me, it's all about getting the kids to sit in their seats and listen to you" This principal said it all.

2 recommendations:

1. Visit "Alfie Kohn.org" and learn about real teaching, read about more progressive education, constuctivist learning and what really makes sense.

2. Look for a progressive school, go in with this philosophy and you will have a truly rewarding teaching career. They will hire you on the spot too!
