Ask an Expert: Marc Lawrence (Answers)

1. I see you put out a free play pretty much every day. How far off are these "free" plays from your paid service?
The Free Plays are games I had under consideration for 'paid selections' that just failed to make the cut.  They are rated as 1-unit plays and should be played accordingly.
2. I was looking at your play ratings and noticed that most of your plays are from 3-5 Star plays. However, you do offer 10-Star plays. That is a big jump, how do you distinguish a 10-Star play and how come there is such a gap in your rankings?
The 3-5 star ratings reflect a percentage of bankroll.  They represent the strength of value associated with the play, with 3* being a medium selection, 4* a strong selection and 5* a very strong selection.  I reserve 10* plays for extremely strong 'Top Play' selections.  10* plays are rare and occur once or twice per season per sport.  I don't believe in using 10* games just for the sake of promotion.  I would prefer they stand alone and differentiate themselves from lesser rated games.
3. Are there any specific teams in specific sports that you tend to like to release plays on more than others?  Do you have any bogey teams that you like to stay away from, or any teams you feel have had good fortunes with over the years and are more willing to put a play out on their games?
Because every game is a different handicap, I choose not to 'fall in love with' or 'stay away' from certain teams.  That being... [More]

1.) Your free picks have great success. What are factors behind deciding for a free pick and a paid pick?
My free picks are very important to me, so I approach the selection of these plays just as carefully as I do my paid plays. I don't like to give out free plays on early games, because later games will get more exposure, allowing more time for people to view the analysis.
2.) I see that you recommend placing 1-2% on your guaranteed selections. How much should a user be placing on your free picks?
I wouldn't feel comfortable putting out a free play, knowing people are going to risk their hard earned money on my advice, unless I thought it was going to win. I have advised all my clients to play my free plays at an equal stake to my paid plays, and those who have followed that advice have done quite well.
3) If you weren't in the sports handicapping business, what would you be doing and do you have any regrets about getting into the business.
My only regret is that I didn't get involved in the industry sooner. I had plenty of opportunities over the years, but I decided to travel instead. I suppose if I wasn't handicapping, I'd be traveling, relaxing and enjoying life.
4) Do you think that parlay's are worthwhile to play when hitting the sportsbooks? If so any advice on playing them?
Interesting question, I actually recently published an article on parlays, saying that I do play them on rare occasions. I don't make a habit of it, but in some cases I find t... [More]

Ask an Expert: Steve Merril (Answers)

You are having a solid baseball season so far. I see you are having more success on sides. Why do you feel this is?
I love handicapping MLB Sides because all you have to do is pick the straight-up winner. Unlike a pointspread in football or basketball, or an Over/Under total, you do not have to worry about covering a pointspread. When I see a matchup with a pitching edge and offensive edge, and the situation and line value is right, I step in and make it a play for my clients. However, my Over/Under selections are also profitable and I recommend playing them as well. Historically, my Over/Under selections have been just as strong as my Side selections in all sports. Keep in mind we are just 3 months into this MLB season, so I would still recommend playing both Sides and Totals equally as there is plenty of baseball left to be played and I expect both my Sides and Totals to win consistently throughout the year.
Currently you are only playing MLB (from what I can see). Do you ever dive into more action in the summer months?
Between the end of the NBA Finals and the start of the NFL preseason, I focus exclusively on just MLB sides & totals. There is normally a full card of 15 MLB games on the schedule each day, so I find plenty of solid money-making opportunities for my clients. I also spend the summer months preparing for the NFL and NCAA Football seasons and this early work gives my clients an extra edge in August and September when the football season begins.

Ask an Expert: Bryan Power (Answers)

1.)    When betting on baseball, do you ever shy away or jump on a team after a big win or loss in a series?
That's a good question. Absolutely, I do.  This can apply to betting on/against a team within the same series or in the opener of their next series.  Take Red Sox-Yankees for example, the most famous rivalry in the sport.  If one team were to sweep the other, I might look to play AGAINST that team in the opener of their following series as there would be a natural emotional letdown.
I also like to look at going against a particular team if they are coming off a big win or loss on Sunday night.  This is because that's usually a big game and their opponent Monday has the inherent advantage of having wrapped things up earlier the previous day.
Within the same series, teams that just blew a save or are on long losing streaks are always a good go against.I tend to stay away from a big underdog that won its last game.
2.)    MLB has been very profitable for you this season. When seasons are this successful, do you ever find your handicapping approach changing?
Absolutely not.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.   Right now, I'm pretty zeroed in on how I want to approach the games and which teams I do/don't like.  It's no different than the athletes playing the games.  If you're on a hot streak, even as long as mine has been this season in baseball, you don't change anything you're doing.[More]

Survivor pick insurance

Last week I went to the optometrist for the first eye examination of my life. Turns out I have astigmatism and need glasses to perform certain tasks like reading small type and driving at night.

This, I have to conclude, can be the only reason I can’t seem to understand why the call was reversed in the Pittsburgh-Baltimore game last night that gave Santanio Holmes a touchdown and Pittsburgh the victory. Clearly the replay officials were seeing something I couldn’t.

The initial call on the field was that Holmes didn’t break the plane with his reception on third down, though his feet were in the end zone. Initially it looked to me like it was no touchdown but it was a closer shave than the greens at Augusta.

The slow-mo replay didn’t exactly clear things up. I don’t see how the officials can say with certainty that Holmes had full possession when – or more accurately, if – the ball broke the plane.

I had the Ravens -3 (BetJamaica.com) so I was a little enraged.

On another note, here’s a Monday Night proposition for you: I need Philadelphia to win straight up tonight to win the survivor pool I’m in. The prize is $1000.
