Peyton Manning Injury Thread Part II

I have commented on many injuries in the NFL. Again, I have worked for some of the major sports teams. I have not ever worked with Peyton Manning nor have I ever seen any true medical evidence of his injury. This is speculation on a player of his caliber with this kind of injury. This is speculation, like over a beer kind of stuff.

I am concerned about Peyton. If someone knows different please let me know but I have seen no videos of him throwing in the last year. You see, if he has nerve damage ( and he does) then there is a significant chance it never returns to the point where he can play in the NFL again. He may never regain the strength in his tricep that would be necessary to him to throw a football 40 -60 yards down the field. Never.
That said, the Colts should have a pretty good idea right now what his arm strength is. There is a very, very important date coming up for Peyton and the Colts. It is March 8th. It is my understanding that is the Colts have him on the roster on March 8th, they owe him an absurd 28 million dollars. You have to think ( cuz I sure do) that the Colts will not give 28 million dollars to a 36 year old QB with only 40% tricep strength. Before I would write that check, I would have a physical and a simple drill to check out the ol arm.
Also, it really surprised me that the Colts cut their GM and President recently. Maybe this was related to the terrible year they had but I could not help think they wanted to keep Peyton and the Irsays were ready to cut their losses on Manning. More speculation.

What this is all adding up to is what will happen in the next couple of weeks.
1) A decision must be made on Manning. I would be floored if he gets the whole 28 million. Floored. Look for a reduced deal or ready........ that Peyton is cut from the Colts or traded. (I would have to think cut because who in their right mind would want to pay him 28 million right now?)Can you imagine, Peyton Manning is cut!
2) Take a close look at what the Colts do, they know if he will play next year. IF they do give him 28 million take a shot at one of the greatest QB's ever next year in fantasy around the 4 th round. If they give him a part, how much do they give him. Less than 10 million, be afraid, be very afraid. If he is cut, run, run run.
3) The Colts will draft Luck number one, count on it. The only way they do not do this is if they get and obscene trade involving a stud young QB and the 5-10 other top picks. But he is the obvious number one and it will happen.
4)Watch for Manning video throwing the rock, maybe it is already out there but I have seen nothing. If someone has a clip let me know. The lack of evidence of his rehab and arm strength though indicates to me, he has played his last down in the NFL.

oh yes.  Peyton will be cut, without a doubt.  The fans would cry, but the GM won't give a damn.

Agreed, that is why I think they went and got a new GM. If this does happen, can you imagine being this poor guy?
Outrage would not even start to describe what will happen...

peyton might be one hit away from his career being over.i hope not, cuz i enjoy watching him play. same as crosby.

I agree that the  "firing" of the front office wasn't so much a one-sided decision from the top as was reported. In my opinion, the GM and President backed Peyton....they acted out of loyalty, and out of gratitude to him for what he has done for the Colts.  At least I want to believe that is the way it went down.

After reading on the internet that Manning went to Belgium to get stem cells injected into his spinal column (who knows if that statement  is 100% true or not), I have to think that he is in big trouble physically.  Couple that with the genetic condition (narrowing of the spinal column) that the 3rd Manning brother has, I have to think that this injury has been developing over a long period of time.

One thing is for sure......the Colts cannot afford to pay Manning and cough up the contract that Andrew Luck is going to fetch. Luck's deal has to be in the 50 million range with 20-30 guaranteed.....when you add that glimmer to the 28 million due Manning, it is way too much stack for one position.

The Indy fans are going to be plenty pissed off, but it is a tough spot for the Colts franchise.  Just imagine if the Colts pay Peyton the big cash and play him next season...and he suffers a catastrophic neck injury on national TV infront of the entire nation. That would be a PR nightmare that the Colts and the NFL as a whole would have trouble dealing with.

It is a truly unfortunate situation....I was hoping to watch Manning for a few more seasons. Good thread and insights though....

Fellas, Peyton Manning was THE best quarterback in the league.

Better than Brees, Brady, his brother Eli, Roethlisberger, all of 'em.

Remember that team was a hospital unit-taking people off the street-and still making the playoffs.

They lost one guy-him-and they became THE worst team in the league.  That's how good he was.

IF he's healthy-and that surgery is a b!tch, he lost his cushion is his vertebrae and has a plate screwed in-and he goes to a competitor who could use a top qb like the Jets-the Jets can win it all IMO.

I don't debate that at all...in my eyes Peyton Manning is  the MVP of the 2011-2012 season.

With him in the lineup the Colts were a contender...without him they were 1-15....there has never  been a more obvious, definitive measurement of one player's value  in NFL history.

Like Manning said on NFL countdown a few weeks back; people will debate on how i throw the ball during practice and make aqusations as to how and if, i will be able to play at the same level i have become accustomed to. He simply said he was was recovering fully and didn't want to push the envelope concering his health/recovery. People have to understand, if Manning wanted to put a video up online of him throwing a perfect 60yrd pass and proving to his fans that his agility is almost back to perfect he would. Although thats not how Manning is, he will wait until next season and come back with no excuses and play his heart out...... My money is on Peyton having a great next season considering this injury and hopefully that will silence the crowd...cheers :)

metalbill manning may not play again because of nerve damage already present however, he is not alot more likely to suffer a severe neck injury than any other QB his age. his problem in his spine has finally been correctly treated with a single level fusion once the fusion heals he will have a stable neck from an orhtopedic and neurologic standpoint.

his problem is the nerve damage that has already occurred. nerves do not heal well , especially in adults. Any residual weakness he may have , will likely be a problem for him for quite some time and possibly forever.

noone in the medical community here in Indiana that i have spoken with has a very good idea how much weakness he has.he and the colts have benn very good at keeping this secret.

I believe his weakness is substantial , which is why he ultimately underwent the fusion. The less invasive decompression procedure did not result in any improvement and he may have had further progression of his weakness. one spine surgeon whom i work with weekly, told me prior to the seaon that Manning would not play at all this season and would undergo a fusion . he feels a return is unlikely .

TheAceMan says:

All valid points, just as Peyton described would arise from the public and media after time elapsed with regards to his injury. Medicine is based on past precedents in conjunction with individual cases within a specific field of medicine to determine recovery times.

Doctor's are unable to predict how and if, any given individual will respond to neurological procedure's fully. Consequentially, Payton his doctors and the Indianapolis organization have to be diligent with their predications on his full recovery.

Payton is surely balancing the ideal amounts of practise and rest time as recommended by his world renounced medical staff. Only time will tell. Hopefully we will be able to watch Manning bounce back from this injury and excite the fans with a couple more years in the NFL.

Crashdavis565 says:
01/18/12 11:11PM
A couple of things on the surgery he had. Now, let me state, this is way out of my league medically. That said, I do have some knowledge of it. I am by no means a neurosurgeon though.

To me, the healed and fused neck should be just as sound and good as a non surgical neck. The problems I have seen in these operated on necks are a slight decrease in range of motion and the predilection to more disc problems above and below the fusion. As far as the fusion itself goes, I think he could play in the NFL.

I did not see him on NFL Countdown but I will youtube it and dissect it. Thanks for the input.

Finally, the Colts also fired their coach. Does it make sense to keep Manning? They are planning a whole new era, the Luck era in Indy has started. I firmly believe they are preparing to cut Manning.

Finally, looking back, did anyone in their right minds think the Colts were going to win their last game of the year and jeopordize Luck? Really. I only wish I would have bet more, hindsight......

Crashdavis565 says:
01/18/12 11:17PM
Rob Lowe is saying Manning will retire, I think it is true.

Makes sense to me.

Sad day if it is true.

TheAceMan says:
01/19/12 09:38AM
Looked for that Segment on NFL countdown and was unable to find it.... sorry, ill keep looking.

I also heard that news, very sad if true. Lets all keep the Payton and the rest of the Manning family in our thoughts. Hopefully the colts aquire Andrew Luck. I know some people beleive it would be a bad decision if Manning is able to return and they still draft Luck as it would be hard for him to be a second string quarterback. Although, that being said it would be fantastic if Manning makes a full recovery and Luck is able to play a few games and live up to the hype revolving around him. This would allow the colts to watch Peyton's progress with regards to his injury and decide to keep Luck or trade him for the greater good of the organization. Either way i beleive there are pro's and con's to drafting Luck if Manning is able to return......any thoughts?

Crashdavis565 says:
01/19/12 09:19PM
I am not a draft expert and even they are wrong quite a bit. Ryan Leaf and Tim Couch jump to mind.

That said, Luck looks to be a can't miss.

I think Peyton retires, I really do. That said, it is an opinion.

I think the Colts draft luck, trade the big stars left and start over.

Sigh.

TheAceMan says:
01/19/12 09:38PM
I 100% agree with drafting Luck and a rebuild is a must; if rumours are true. Although, i am still holding my breathe because apparently Mannings father said he has not heard any talk of retiring from Payton. That being said, who really knows the truth.....???
Mkuhi says:
01/20/12 09:27AM
I could say I have "insider" info about Peyton's retiring, or atleast not being on the Colts anyore. This information came from a friend who has no reason to lie and for me is not a liar. This friend of mine has a friend whose mom works for the NFL finalizing team Jersey for the next year.

What he said is that Mannings name was not on the roster list for a Jersey to be made for.

Anywho that is some intense speculation and when I think about it doesn't make complete sense as how do they already know the roster before the draft and cuts and what not.

Just what I have been hearing....even if I didn't hear this though Peyton is done, are you kidding me---I would not go back into the NFL if I was going to risk back/neck pain for rest of my life or even becoming paralyzed.

BACK PROBLEMS SUCK--i know cuz im chubby and my core isn't strong and it makes my lower back feel like crap all the time hahaha

Crashdavis565 says:
01/20/12 10:32AM
Mkuhi-

I cannot think they make rosters that far in advance but that is interesting.

TheAceMan says:
01/20/12 10:38AM
No chance they make them that far in advance.........
Mkuhi says:
01/20/12 11:25AM
aceman I compeltely agree with you, my only issue is that my friend is really reliable and has no reason to be not telling some sort of truth. When he told me I should have asked him more about it. What I wonder though, is there a list for their franchise players who have long term contracts. When are the orders for their Jerseys created? Who knows....I'd put a futures bet though on peyton not coming back
Crashdavis565 says:
01/30/12 08:17PM
This is definitely coming to pass. I think they will cut him, or he retires.
Hard to imagine.
One thing is for sure, he aint getting 28 million come March 8 or so, not after making 26 million last year and not playing a down.
No way.

Crashdavis565 says:

I do too, that said, I really think his career is over.
Hope I am wrong
Great QB class guy
totally gets it.
Wow- if he is healthy and goes to Tenn, odds on to win the Bowl?
kickinA says:
01/30/12 08:59PM

Even if Peyton doesn't play another down, he's a first ballot HOFamer regardless. That legacy will live on.

And I'd much rather see him on the NFL network crew replacing M. Irvin or Warren Sapp myself.

Totally Agree!
Makaveli1 says:
01/30/12 11:47PM

I will hate to see Peyton go even as a Texans fan. He has been a pain in our asses for too many years BUT he is a class act and an easy HOF 1st ballot. Hell, should be voted in the day after he retires. I agree with above, that no one person has had such a dramatic effect on a team one season to the next with his absence this year. Did not see that one coming at least not that bad. BOL to Peyton and I will cringe every play if he returns knowing what COULD happen.

Crashdavis565 says:
01/31/12 11:19AM

Thanks!
This is a great article and echos what I have been saying for two weeks or so.
One thing, to me he does not risk permanent damage by playing, this is over blown, the fused vertebrae should hold up as well as any old vertebrae would. The only issue is how far along will the nerve regenerate. As they say, it may still get better but it is worry time.
Great find- Thanks!
Crashdavis565 says:

The doctors came out today and said the neck is stable. They also said, the tricep sucks ass (not in those words)
March 8th is looming. I heard they could both agree to push this date back, that makes some sense for sure.

Crashdavis565 says:

They finally said he cannot throw the ball.

Unfortunately, this may never change?

Get well soon Peyton

Europa says:
02/15/12 05:44PM

Doc, Peyton might require more surgery and fusion procedure, not looking good for him down the stretch.

http://www.rotoinfo.com/comments-2012_02_05_04_23_pm__Peyton_Manning_QB-112407.html

Crashdavis565 says:
02/15/12 11:46PM

Yes, I am still of the belief, he will never play again. Not so much from a safety issue but because he will never regain the strength he needs to throw the rock like an NFL QB.

I think Irsay cuts him on March 8, they may both extend it as Peyton knows in his heart, he cannot play for another team right now.

Sad.

Europa says:
03/08/12 12:26PM

i can't argue with you on that bold words, you know your stuff.

i do agree that Favre and Montana won few more games, esp. playoffs games, with another team. But those two QBs were not seriously injuried at the time they were traded or retired. Well, Manning may be healthier than before the surgery but one more hit on the head might reinjure his neck.

Why Colts released Manning if they should think as you likewise and risk on a unproven rookie QB. Granted Luck played really well in college but we have witnessed so many #1 draft QB went bust in pro football.

Irsay must think differently from your points that Manning should be as healthy or even healthier now than before the neck surgery. And Irsay is taking a high risk releasing Manning and signing Luck.

Europa says:
03/06/12 11:17PM
It's pretty risky for any team to sign Manning, doc. His neck might not be 85% healthy and be cleared by his physicians to play football again. He is 35 years old and one hit on the field might get him to retire and goes with the huge money spent on him, i won't risk the money if i were an owner of NFL team. Peyton Manning is a great player but age and injury just pave the way into retirment.
Europa says:
03/08/12 07:33PM

Good read on medical stuff over bone fusion, and time will tell if Luck should carry the Colts to prominence.

Marshall Faulk said on NFL Network, Peyton might avoid to compete against his borther Eli in NFC. Faulk explained it as the Manning family culture or something like that as the siblings won't stand on the way to Super Bowl in same Conference. So, Peyton should choose AFC if Faulk is right, and Jets or Dolphins might be good picks.

Europa says:
03/10/12 02:24AM

Now i've learned that Jets have singed Mark Sanchez to three year extention contract, now we are able to delete the Jets from the possible Manning singing list.

Besides Fins and Broncos, are Jags interested in Manning after new owner at the helm?

Crashdavis565 says:
03/10/12 02:07PM
I just maxed my 5dimes account on the Manning will not play next year at plus 325.
This may all be smoke and mirrors and for a little money I am going to take a shot.
Go lightly my brothers.

Crashdavis565 says:
03/10/12 02:14PM
Look, I am a conspiracy theorist to the max but let us rehash this shit.
Peyton releases a bs video of some grainy shots of him supposedly throwing the rock at Duke.
No other video is forth coming.  This is the "PROOF"  he is ok. C'mon now.
If he could really throw and  I mean really throw, would he not just have an open tryout with some hot babes and chuck it all over the field for half an hour while chilling and sipping on a cool bud light?
WTF.
If you were an NFL GM and looking to sign ol number 18, would you need some confidence he was healed?
Why not just go out to a park and throw it 70 yards down field and then turn around and say  "any questions?"
He is a great guy and arguably the best QB ever but I just do not believe this circus.
He is worth 20 million or so/year if healthy, he will probably sign for about 8 million-10 million/year. It all reeks to me and I am betting against him, til I see some real evidence.
GL-

Crashdavis565 says:
03/09/12 07:41PM
He is here in Denver right now!
Wow, what a scoop this would be.
Peyton to Denver!
The rumor is he goes to the Fins and this is only for show to get him more dough.
I am unsure if he has thrown at all. They said he was on the practice field some.
Crashdavis565 says:
03/08/12 08:54AM
So Irsay has cut him.
From here we see how the arm is.
If Peyton can throw and I mean NFL throw, expect a frenzy and then a signing here in the next couple of days.
I mean, let us be real, if you are a QB challenged NFL team, how fast would you scoop up Manning? A day, two.
The offers should be over the top and crazy.
If he cannot NFL throw, and I think he cannot. You will see stalling and arbitration. You will see Manning talking and talking but doing little. He gains nothing by waiting if he is NFL ready as the money will be there TODAY, if he is not ready then they stall and pray.
The key will be tryouts, he is talking to teams but is he throwing the rock for teams. I doubt he does. Stay tuned.
Crashdavis565 says:
03/08/12 08:57AM

I respectfully disagree. These necks once fused are as good and maybe even better than new, for a few years at least.
Also, remember in the NFL, as we just saw with Peyton, there is little GUARANTEED MONEY, most of the cash is deferred and then paid. If you are cut in the NFL, for the most part, you do not get paid.
If healthy, he signs within the week for obscene money.
The league has a history of signing and playing over the hill QB's and Manning is not that.
Favre, Montana, Namanth, Collings, shit every QB goes til the bitter end save Elway and arguably Warner.
Crashdavis565 says:
03/08/12 07:16PM
I went back to 14 years ago when Peyton came to the Colts.  I am not sure if Irsay was there at the time but the Colts did the same thing. They cut everybody and totally rebuilt from the ground up. Look for them to be absolutely terrible again this year and slowly come back to prominence.
True, many QB's have been bust but I think Luck will be a great one. Time will tell.
Fusions are solid once they have healed. The bones will be better than before. The problem is over time the fused regions put pressure on the non fused bones above and below. This is where the problems lie. The fusion leads eventually to other problems in these regions.
As far as taking a big hit today, he should be fine. As far as neck problems down the road, well, that my friend is a whole different story.....
