The Dwight Freeney Injury Update

First of all, I think this is huge news and I mean HUGE!. This guy demands a double team and dictates what an offense can and cannot do. This injury figures big to me in the total and the overall outcome of the day. If you have to keep chipping this guy with a RB or TE (and you do) that slows down a big part of your O. So to me, it is important if he plays or not.

Now what is his injury? I saw it happen during the Jets game when he rolled his ankle or inverted his ankle late in the game. This is a classic injury to the ankle and one most of us "jocks" on covers have had at one time. This is another of those hurt like hell injuries. The inversion of the ankle tears the ATF ligament (anterior talofibular ) and the medial calcanear ligament. In rare circumstances it tears the PTF ligament.  These ligament are responsible for the lateral stability of the ankle. If you have had one, you know that any "tweak" laterally or to the outside with this sprain will make you cry like your brother just stole your favorite toy. Straight running is not that much of a problem.

Freeney play the R DE positiion most of the time (although I have seen him moved all over the field). If he has no stability laterally on the ankle he will not be able to turn the corner so to speak. This is the classic Freeny move where he blows by the big L tackle and explodes to the quarterback while running on the ankle and foot  with a right lateral force. If these ligaments are not healed properly, he will lose his most effective weapon!  Freeney with no speed rush  ,Ali with no jab, Vick not being able to scramble, etc etc .

What can the Colts do to combat this? If I was the Colts ( and I admit I have never played or coached football but have watched far far far too much) I would invert my ends. Swith Freeney and Mathis. This would allow the speedy Freeney to rush on his good ankle....this may very well happen. Also,  I am sure those trainers are doing all they can to make this thing better but at the end of the day, ligaments are very slow healing. That said I do NOT KNOW THE EXTENT OF HIS INJURY OR HIS ABILITY TO HEAL AND HE COULD VERY WELL BE 100% COME GAME TIME. I do kind of feel watching the injury occur and the interviews of the Colts today that he is TODAY definitely still hurting.

I am going to watch this site and the television and see how he looks as he cuts on the ankle and moves laterally on the ankle. I would not put much faith in his forward speed or movement. I would encourage anyone who watches a practice to add to this thread on how he looks LATERALLY and his comfort level.

One last thought.......these injuries can take months to heal fully, if he plays and has any trauma laterally he could very well reinjure this thing despite the mounds of tape he will have on it.

Taking the Aints and the Under but may can the Under if the big end does not play.

toady i saw him walking off the field and to me it didn't look like anything other then you every day sprained ankle

a high ankle sprain takes a full month to heal... and i mean a full month!  just FYI...

but yea, i am pretty sure this was not a high ankle sprain...

This was def not a high ankle sprain. A high ankle sprain occurs when the foot is everted. Freeney's foot was inverted. How he was able to weight bear after the injury and the mechanism of injury suggests a grade I. This means, he should be good to go on SB day..

i've seen a lot of guys get high ankle sprains and none came of the field like freeney

if he got one he is tough as nails

He would be listed as doubtful if the angle injury is more serious, but he is questionable. Bill Pollian said that Freeny will go on Feb. 7, so i think you are right.

i've had a high ankle sprain... i was just pointing out that some ankle sprains do require more than 2 weeks to heal...

Ice4Blood says:

if it is a grade 1 sprain, then this is a complete non-issue... it will have no effect on his play for the Super Bowl at all...

Colt spokesman Bob Bellichek says he's just fine, he's always been fine and he'll continue being fine in the future.

We will have to see. There are way varying degress of ankle sprains. No doubt this was a regualr ol ankle sprain not the dreaded high ankle sprain. I am sure he will play, to me this is a non issue.  As I state though, it is his Right ankle, this will be his push ankle.  I am not sure he will be 100% OR THE FREENEY WE ALL KNOW.  That is the issue to me.

These things hurt 2 weeks down the road. As the game goes on and he tests and retests that ligament, it COULD cause some pain. At this point, he is in a boot and not playing, to me that signals he may not be 100%.

As I stated we will have to watch the practices and see how he looks, that is the only way we will know.

Again, just looking for any little edge, I think this may be one that is not on everybody's radar.

I would not expect any different. The boy is not fine...he is in a boot and the other players expressed concerns about his ability to go.

I'm sure the Saints are going to scheme for him much like Jared Allen last week. Bushrod was constantly getting help from the TE Dave Thomas with chip blocks.

As far as his effectiveness - I'm sure a little Marcaine and tape and he will good to go.

Crashdavis565 says:

This does not mean he is out 100%.  There are varying grades of torn. If it is a grade three (the worst), yea he is out. I have a feeling it is a two or a one and this he can play with. The point still is, I do not think he is 100% and it may be he does not play at all. Now, does this change your view of the game?

Does for me.....

Haha no, anesthesia. Looks like I was wrong, it is a grade III according to the reports. That's what I get for trying to diagnose by looking at the play and not examining it [via Senator Frist].

If Freeney is out they will use Rhaeem Brock is a very good pass rusher as well as a decent run stopper. He has a little more size and strenght than Freeney but not nearly the same burst or quickness. Still think Saints plus+6 is the way to roll. Colts in a squeeker.

Colts | Freeney could be a game-time decision

Updating an ongoing story, NFL.com reports Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Caldwell said during a radio interview that the Colts may wait until the last minute to decide if DE Dwight Freeney (ankle) will be able to play in Super Bowl XLIV. Caldwell said Freeney is considered questionable at this point

DtotheP says:

Caldwell said this afternoon that he expects Freeney to play.
Ultimate_Capper says:

just because he's probable doesnt means he's not gonna play, oh he'l play. just that he won't be 100% still yet the colts, cover and wins. don't listen to what the media has to say, because we all know they love to exaggerate.

FYI: i'm not a colts or saints fan. i'm about money.
Crashdavis565 says:

I still think he plays, it should be noted that this may be good for the saints, sometimes it is hard to pull your studs and they be hurting the team at 70%

As I stated at the beginning, TO ME, the man is a difference maker. He will be in the HOF one day, I do not think Brock will be. I am going to take the aints now, this line may now drift down some if the news indicates he wont play. I am guessing he plays but not very well. These fuckers (torn ATF)  hurt as an injury and no amount of marcaine will fix the unsure feeling he will have. He will not be the same guy at two weeks I would guess. If he is........wow, what a lift for the team in blue!!!

I still think he should play the Left side, I wonder if this happens?? Would not be the biggest shocker in the world.

Freeney is not a 1 to 2 pt. difference maker in this game spread.

I have not heard any updates on Freeney, anyone have the lastest?

I saw the colts overall record with him and without him and there was no difference in ppg, ypg etc. HOWEVER, ESPN failed to mention the teams. To me, it is hard to believe the man does not make a difference but maybe that is so. For the sake of great capping, anyone have the colts ATS with and without the Man. They may have got some Lions type teams w/o him to make those stats look good.

I think he is done, and the coach will not say that Freeney will miss the Super Bowl.Guys this is a huge piece of the puzzle missing for the Colts. They usually can get to you with rushing only 4, now they have to blitz. Look for the screen plays to be a huge factor for the Saints

Dwight Freeney Did Not Participate in Practice on Friday--Colts.com

Europa says:

"It's better than yesterday, and yesterday was better than the day before," Freeney said (Wednesday). "It's a slow progression right now, but that's where it is. Every morning I wake up, and it feels a little better." -- http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/2009/news/story?id=4882978

I agree with Marshall Faulk that Freeney will play in SB, it's a matter of how much efective he will be. Terrell Owens of the Eagles came back from torn ACL and played without 100% in SB against Pats but he was still pretty effective in that game, and we know Eagles did cover that spread.

i don't think there is a chance he will have an impact in this game at all other then his presence if he can push off it at all.  The sweeling is down in the ankle which means nothing because he hasnt stressed it yet. As soon as he goes full tilt he even if he's completely numb which he won't because he'll need to realize how much damage he may be doing so it's important for him to experience some degree of pain.  3rd degree means complete tear and often requiring surgery. Playing on an injury like this can cause further tears in other muscles as well as damage to the joint since it's unstable.  Prove me wrong Freeney I'd love to see it but having had plenty of experience w/ this I don't think there's a chance other then his presence

looking back at the Colts w/o Freeney. It may be  true that they are 8-0 without him but ATS they are not as good. In  2007 he missed the last 7 games of the year and the playoff LOSS TO SD , there they went 3-5 or 3-6 ATS in those games. That is counting the SD game where he was injured. THAT IS COUNTING THE LAST GAME OF THE YEAR WHERE INDY RESTED THE STARTERS THE SECOND HALF and of course lost the game that is  counting the playoff game they lost (outright) with Manning at QB and being 10.5pt favorites.

FYI

take it for what it is worth....

This is a dream...This is a serious injury. The colts themselves are preparing to play without him.

Crashdavis565 says:

just to pat myself of the back, this thread was started before this was news. You can see the initial posts stating he plays no doubt etc.

The latest is that many (not all) feel the late money on the aints is for this injury.........and Freeney will practice tomorrow to test the ankle.

I can already tell you, practice will not be good. Yet, when he takes the shot for the game, it will be a little better. :)

Ice4Blood says:
02/03/10 06:54PM

Crash... i think they are treating him rigorously with a hyperbaric chamber... i think you should expect that he will play in a limited role... he will be used in very particular situations, and depending on how well he does or doesn't perform early on, you might see him used a bit more heavily in the 4th quarter when the game is on the line... but the way they have talked, and he has talked in particular, it is clear that the injury would keep him out of just about any other game, given the same recovery time, but that they are going to use every measure and every piece of technology they can to speed up the recovery time...

not much help from a capping standpoint, but it's what we have to go with...

Ice4Blood says:
