One Goalie -- One Game -- Who Ya Got?

We got a really good discussion a few weeks back about “which one current pitcher with your life on the line would you have start for you?” Great answers and even some interesting feedback about all-time greats. Lots of Bob Gibson fans out there.

Anyway, I decided to ask the same thing for hockey.

If you had to win one game for your life, what current NHL goalie do you take?

Roberto Luongo has a gold medal, but didn’t really dazzle en route to claim the Olympic hockey title and was a total abortion for the cup finals and was yanked more than any other “elite” goalie I have ever seen in a single postseason.

Tim Thomas was phenomenal during the Bruins postseason run. But sometimes his aggressive style can lead to some weak goals that hurt his squad in their typically close games.

For my money right now, I take the Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers. King Henry is a total wall and carries that poor squad for weeks at a time. He also has been stellar in the postseason despite his team.

All-time? Give me Patrick Roy over that soft asshole Dominik Hasek any day. Don’t even start in with Glen Hall or Jacques Plant either. They didn’t have to play against this type of caliber of athlete, even if they didn’t wear masks. Oh, and I also think Martin Brodeur is an ass clown, too.

Who do you take in one game right now? All-time?

Wow, what a terrible post.

Patrick Roy was a great goalie, of that there is no doubt. But was he the best ever? Debatable. But when you take into account he quit on his team - and demanded a trade because he was upset he was left in a game to actually play net (for which he was WELL paid by the way) he showed that he wasn't a team guy. Patrick cared about Patrick. Even more than Patrick cared about winning.

Marty may be an ass clown - and he may have been the beneficiary of a defense-first system, but he was a great goalie. He's still decent, but hardly a world beater.

As for you ripping on Plante, this proves you don't know hockey. Period. Didn't play against real athletes? You don't know Jack. Or in this case Jacques.

As for the answer...

There can be only one...

One game - I got Vladislav Tretiak (he'll beat Roy every time)

Agreed my friend Keyser. Vladislav Tretiak was one of the best along with Jacques Plante but the best of all time in my opinion would have to be Bernie Parent who was money for the Broad Street Bullies in the seventies. Congratulations Tim "Mr. Conn Smythe" Thomas you were incredible throughout the NHL playoffs and the number one reason the 39 year old Stanley Cup drought is over for Beantown along with being a class act to boot.

Playing right now? Gimme Tim Thomas. I will take him he is a competitor unlike Luongo.

Boston had no business winning the stanley cup this year and thanks to Tim Thomas they succeeded. Last goaltender to put on this type of performance for a championship team was in fact Patrick Roy in 1993 for the HAB-NOTS. The thing l like about Timmy Thomas is that he plays against the other goalie. A poignant comment he made after the stanley cup winning game is that he said he had to pitch a shutout because Luongo did not allow too many goals in Vancouver. That mindset tells me that Thomas understands that the goalies job is not to make every save but to allow 1 less goal than the opposing goalie. No matter what the other statistics of the game show. That is the true mental battle. ALLOW 1 FEWER GOAL THAN THE OPPOSITION.

All time to win one game is a tough call. But l will take my chances with Patrick Roy. Bernie Parent and Billy Smith will be the others l would have on my roster.

Just my opinion:

If the game is played at today's speed with today's technology (equipment/skates), you can forget about any goaltender before 1980.

As a former goaltender I respect what Roy did throughout his career and impacted the way the postition is played today. But also as a life long Red Wings fan a few of his games make me question whether I want him between the pipes for the big game: 2002, Game 7 he got lit up for 6 before getting yanked. 1 game before that he pulled his infamous "statue of liberty play." (What a donkey). He also let his ego get the best of him when he demanded a trade mid-way through a game in Montreal.

Goaltenders these days are so quick and athletic it's tough to pick against them ie. Lundquist, Thomas, Luongo, Ward, yet no goalie has proved he can perform consistently great throughout their career.

I could make a case for each Roy & Hasek (the Buffalo Hasek). Hasek never had the luxury of playing behind an elite team in Buffalo. He knew each game he had to keep the opposition to 1 or 2 goals. His perfomance in the 98' Olympics was nothing short of brilliant.

With all that said, it pains me to say I would choose St. Patrick with Dominic coming in a close second and Marty solidly at 3rd.

But truthfully, If the game was played tomorrow, I'd pick the hottest goaltender over the past month... it's a streaky position.

Also as I former 'tender, MY suggestion, for such a circumstance, would be to take me to defend your crease... then bet on the other team.
