Did #1 at Mandalay bay for $1,600.00 on the quarter progressive.

1)  Take my kids camping this summer.  Nothing real wild, just tenting out.  Kids are 6 and almost 4 and neither has camped out yet.

I'm with ya on #1, I've never hit a royal and I live in Las fucking Vegas!!  Although, I've only lived here a year and a half, but prior to moving here, I can specifically to gamble several times a year for many, many years.  I now play vp at least once a week, at least to get a few "free" beers out the deal when I'm sitting at any bar.  Friends have told me about hitting 3 or 4 in one day!  Another bartender friend of mine told me hit 15 the first year he moved to Vegas, I have no reason to not believe him.

Therefore, for me it's:

1) Hit a fucking royal on VP.

2) Get out of corporate engineering consulting (already on my way with this one).  Engineering consulting sucks huge horse cock gentleman, I don't recommend it for anyone, even if you are a PE.  Work independently or for a govt agency or something, the private sector is for slimeballs.

hey mwc, i am going to graduate as an engineer within 2 years and was wondering why you think corporate engineering is for slimeballs.  i don't really want to work for the government (or at least i think i don't) and its not like i could start working independently right out of school.  any further insight you have about the situation would be greatly appreciated as i dont really know that many engineers and i have never heard that corporate sucks from the ones i do know.  lemme get some of that wisdom.

1.)  Get into the best shape I have been in since I turned the legal drinking age.

2.)  Play in at least 1 event at the 2009 WSOP in Vegas.

Hey ww, I don't know about any words of wisdom, but I can give you my frank opinion.

One doesn't start out being a slimeball, and one might not even be a slimeball as a person, but the cutthroat nature of the way these companies are set up will eventually do it to you.

First, the whole thing is set on the premise of "billabilty."  As in, you don't really work for Black & Veetch or Baker Corp or CH2MHill, or whoever - you work for the client.  Every second you're at work must be billable to a client. As in, the company does not want to pay you!!  Not only do they not want to, they won't.  You'll be laid off or fired in a New York second if you don't reach your billabilty quota.

So, what this creates is a cutthroat, every man for himself mentality.  There is NO teamwork.  There is no professional courtesy.  It creates an awesome work environment.  Everyone is on their own. Not only must all your hours be billable to the client, you're also responsible for getting your own work.  Yes, that's right, you have to go out on your own basically and obtain jobs and contracts.  But because of the billabilty issue, you can't really do this on company time (because they don't really want to pay).  So, when do you do it??  Right, think about it.  It's fucked.

I'm only scratching the surface.  Basically, all these companies do is give you the necessary phyiscal vehicles to get the job done...an office, IT support, clerical support, etc.  So say you are a gung-motherfucking-ho, cutthroat asshole engineer and you're kicking ass left and right....but what's that do?  Nothing.  In the end, you'll be no better off than you were at the beginning.  Besides having health problems, marriage issues and fucked up kids because you're stressed 110% of time and you work 70+ hours a week, every week, every year.

That's not even mentioning mixing all of this with the competative and arrogant nature of most engineers.  Have fun.

  you asked.

fourth paragraph should read, "It creates an awful work environment."

Not awesome, most definitely not.

1)  Gamble with a lot of discipline, smaller amounts and win some money overall

2)  Be more patient with my wife and kids

3)  Get about 40 pounds off

4)  Play more golf; work less than the 65 hrs+ I work now

5)  Drink alot more water and get off blood pressure medicine

6)  Get out of banking

MWC says:

Definitely man.  Life is way too short for that shit, especially if you have a wife and kids.

Ron, my guess why you havent caught a royal flush yet is because you are not playing perfect video poker.  My brother catches them constantly.  What you need is the software that actually teaches you how to play perfect video poker.  You probably think your throwing the right cards away but in fact you could actually be throwing the wrong ones away.  This is just my guess on why you cant catch the big one.  I cant either and when i have practiced on the software, am way off on the right cards to keep.

Good luck with your list

MWC says:

cd- As for me, I play perfect vp or as close as I can remember.  There's a website, that a UNLV math professor hosts (I won't post it), that breaks every game down mathematically (proving that you can never win), but he does have several VP simulation games that you can play that corrects your play.  But some "perfect" play can eliminate chances of a royal, such as double-double bonus play, where you can be dealt three cards to a royal but also have a pair.  Well, perfect play dictates you keep the pair in that situation, playing that particular game, hence eliminating a chance at a royal on that hand.  There are other examples as well.

williamwallace- So, have you read my take on the engineering thing?  Or did we highjack Ron's thread for nothing?  lol...sorry Ron.

What you say sucks alot!!!!!!!!!!!

BUT IT IS TRUE! 101% true!!!!!!!!

I have a masters of finance degree and was totally whored out

like you can't believe a few years back! A bit different than your engineering but in the end same shit!

Huge publishing company (I will not mention the name purposely as folks there still know me). After sept 11 and profits fell one of the people in my dept was laid off and I assumed her job which was inventory control (ordering paper to print the pubs), and waste analysis for the paper to print many publications. I already was in charge of billing, hourly payroll, and newsprint modeling (deep analysis of the efficiency of the printing process), and then I took the extra job!

Guys, all I can say is it was fucked! Then the company knew I had a systems analysis IT background in addition and I was working with the IT dept on some stuff! I was in fucking meetings half the day seriously!

Then I had half a day to do like 10 hours of work! I am low balling this actually! It was fucked!!!!!!!! I remember working straight through a Superbowl and I could not so much as watch a minute if the game!!

I shit you not!!!!!!!! My girlfriend at the time had a talk with my folks and I got into IT and systems analysis again and good bit less work, but it is with relatives and I always feel they are doing me a favor by paying me considerably above the industry average (above 100K). Anyway, bottom line is private sector SUCKS!!! Let me repeat S-U-C-K-S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I gained 30 pounds which I since lost with that terrible job above!!!
In the end it is all about being peaceful, at least half liking what you do, and having a decent amount of leisure time!!!
That is my definition of success and it should be yours!
One of my buddies used to tell me when you are on your death bed 10 seconds before you die, you are not going to be thinking
I busted my ass to make some stock holders rich and that was my life!! Think about it and make the change if you must now!

I know easier said then done but do what can do to enjoy more,

however little may be it! This shit is tooooooooo fucking short folks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ha what a bleak future you paint for me.  .  i'm assuming you have an engineering degree.  do you have a PE?  where would you go to work.  i already know i dont want to do engr for the rest of my life but while the market is as such it might be the best way to get a job (plus i love all the math and science that i learn).  also if what you say is true, and you had to do it all over again, what would you do out of school?  the following are assumptions ive made but they could be wrong

-i mean you can't do engineering in any independent form until you get a PE and that takes 4 years in my state plus passing the tests.
-obtaining a government job could be difficult as i hear the security clearences are hard to obtain.

so what would you do if you just graduated?
MWC says:
01/07/09 03:27PM
I'm sorry williamwallace, I've mislead you.  The key word here is consulting engineering firms.  The companies I listed above are all engineering consultants.

Despite what I mentioned earlier, the private sector is just fine.  It's the consulting firms that you don't want to work for.  I was talking with my wife about this the other night.  She is a PE and works in consulting.  I am not a PE, I'm a Information Systems (GIS, Database) Project Manager.  So I was still held accountable for my billability, just like the PE's.

So, if you can, try to get on at a big private firm, like one of the oil companies, say Chevron-Texaco.  It's fine being an engineer for Chevron, but you don't want to be an engineer working for a consulting company that does work for Chevron.  All those big firms subcontract all kinds of shit, mostly shit they don't want to do themselves, that's when the "consultants" come in.
