Just wondering what my Covers Brothers think of this list ....
 
 
Here are some teams that I think will take a step back in 2009

USC at most will lose 2 games and that might be a stretch ....

You need to look at Maryland.  They lost 30 seniors from the team last year and only return 10 starters (6 on offense and 4 on defense).  The Terps OL losses 3 guys that started for at least two years and lose 5 of their top 7 OL. Their DL losses almost everyone up front.

To me that means there will be a hole in the leadership of the team this year and that they'll struggle to run the ball and stop the run.

Yeah Totally agree ... Maryland will be taking a step back in 2009... Fridge will have to do his best coaching yet ...

and like you said they will struggle to run the ball and stop the Run ...

Looking at the schedule ...

Predicted Losses  at CAL, Rutgers, Clemson , at Wake ,at NC St, Va Tech , at FSU

Predicted Wins   James Madison, MD TN , UVA, at Duke , BC

5-7 or 6-6 at Best but toally agree this team should fall flat on their face and the Only Gimmie on the schedule is JMU ... 3-9 is Possible

take a look at georgia also. there are a lot of question marks on the team. DE and TE just got suspended for first couple of games. no running game unless one of the backups emerge. defense was bad last year. what did they cover, 3 games in the regular season last year?

Don't be shocked at the end of the year that Fridge gets fired.  Just a hunch that the Terps alum are little out of sync with expectations are for the program.

Which is what I mean with respect to Terps fan base... they have totally unrealistic expectations for their program. They are never going to have a top program that will consistently stay in the top 15 year over year.  The Terps should expect an 8-4 record as a good year.  If they get the right breaks and go 9-3 or 10-2 that should be consider a great year.  Their isn't enough tradition in the program or enough talented players in the region to compare the Terps to Michigan.

this year if MD goes 8-4 - Fridge will definitely survive and probably get a contract extension... they are going to be bad this year.

Yeah I have noticed Terps Fan is always way to high on his team ..,. IMO Fridge has down an excellent job and maybe he would be better off somewhere elese ...

I have to agree with you on both teams u got in the MAC. I think it will be a long year for buffalo. I really liked the QB they lost

Florida Atlantic     Lucky to win 5 games this year ?

 Fresno State is a team that really intrigues me... and I haven't heard much mentioned about them anywhere.  I don't have any idea what they lost other than Brandstater and Bear Pascoe... but I know they were pretty bad last year and remained public (and covers) darlings for most of the year.  Then Pat Hill had the whole double secret interview with Washington at the end of the season  (<- Pat Hill rolling incognito)... just lost his 4th OC in as many seasons... throw in a DC stepping down after battling brain cancer... and a fan base/boosters hinting that Hill might have outstayed his usefulness (subject to debate)

 

... this could be a team that just desperately needs a new start... or it could be a team a couple bad breaks away from total implosion...

Fresno ST went down Hill cause of 1 game, Wiscky. They had put so much stock into it, it became too much of an emotional letdown when they lost.

Hill circles the wagons like no other, I will hold off on saying that he, or his squad is done.

I think Minnesota in the big 10 has a great chance to go backward,because of their schedule. On the road @ Penn st,Ohio St,Iowa should be 3 L. Cal will be tough, I think NW beats them at Evanston. They dont get Indiana or Michigan in conf play. They have issues with OL and running game.

Ok maybe not week 1 vs Cal Davis ...

but after that

At Wisky   L13+

 Boise St   L20+

 at Cincinnati   L21+

at Hawaii     L7+

SJ St.    W1+    Team might put it together and go on a nice run with a WIN here..

at NM St.  W7+   ATS Play

Utah St.   W24+   ATS Play

at Idaho   W14+    Fade Win no Cover ?       

at Nevada  L14+   Fade ??

La Tech  L4+            Fade ??

 at Illinois  L13+

 

 

6-6 at very best ...

5-7 or worse, very Likely

I am also a Fan of Pat Hill.... 

 But the Loses are heavy this year and the Schedule doesn't do them any favors....

That being said, in order to Finish  6-6 or better and  Bowling , Hill will need to do his best Work ....

" a 'lucky'...5-7 LY......outgained an average of 30 yds/game in conf play + only 12 starts lost due to injury (and +5 in TO's)....."
positive side played 10 true frosh.LY...+ Erickson never had back to back  losing seasons.....so maybe ?

It is suprising to me that very few people consider it a big deal that Alabama is replacing three very talented offensive linemen and the QB. They are a definite fade team from the start...

Wake Forest  not sold on them this season I only see 2 Gimmies on the schedule

 

Miami   The Schedule + a Horrible coach might keep the Vanes from Bowling

 

Maryland   6-6 ?? Fridge might be on his way out ... I would gladly take him if I were a AD

UConn  Edsall is a very good coach , but the Huskies have lost alot of talent ..

Northwestern  Kafka will need to stay healthy for the Wildcats to go Bowling

Missouri  Getting to 6-6 will be tuff sledding for Tigers

 

Texas Tech ? Still should win 8 games

Rice  4 Wins at best ???

Ball St..  Coach gone with not much else coming back

Buffalo  The early part of the schedule is tough for a Green QB

Colorado St.   I have never been a fan of Fairchild

I respectfully disagree. I realize that everyone and their brother have Bama losing none to three games, but I do not see this. I think they very well could and should lose to Virginia Tech, at Olemiss and LSU,  another SEC team along the way and possble an early game that they should not with an OL that is talented, but has not had time to know and learn each other yet. A new QB whose ability to lead out of the gate is a big question mark and not a positive, especially with the real possibility that VT's defense will rattle him to the point that he loses confidence.

Athlon Sports pre-season fantasy QB rankings in the SEC have Mcelroy #8 and Jackson #17. Granted, these are just guesses, but they have Kodi Burns of Auburn #6 ahead of both and he has done nothing and expected to do nothing by most.

It is all subjective and opinion now, but I think it is a good possibilty that about half way through the season, Bama's excellent defense will begin to resent having to carry the offense and losing a few games they would win with last years offense, the OL and QB. Inner turmoil is possible as it has happened to teams before.
