"ONLINE GAMBLING also helps in the fight against GLOBAL WARMING"

"No more driving that carbon-belching vehicle of yours to remote Indian Casino's to get your gambling fix,  or going to Vegas on a plane that belches more carbon pollution into the upper atmosphere."

"ONLINE GAMBLING is endorsed by every Polar Bear we interviewed."

"C'mon America, even if you think Al Gore is a complete idiot, at least do it for the Polar Bears"

It absolutely makes too much sense for the USG to do this.  I have pushed for legalized online gambling with a small tax on it for a while.  The Bible-thumpers and the religious right know exactly what is BEST FOR YOU and will never allow anything like this to happen.  A half-percent tax on your gross betting would not hurt the gambler and would pull this country out of the doldrums. I live in the Bible Belt and my congressman would never support it because "it has to be a sin, it feels so good". Or some other excuse.  But it is a GREAT IDEA!

Keep dreaming. Big Brother is in charge of the White House and Congress. Pro-business and creating new forms of tax revenue is not part of social engineering. Sorry.

This seems like a good thing to debate in better economic times.  No way any politician is going to hang their own ass out there to debate this when things are the way they are now.  I'm not saying they should not, just saying that it would be viewed as not so smart in today's political world.  And you do you really think that we have any true leaders or anybody that would take a chance like that?

Fair Tax is also a great idea that no poltician wants to touch.  It would be better if they did, but they have not the spine for that kind of scrutiny - none of them do.

Good article. One thing, If I were a online casino and became legal in a country that would be great, however taxing it would probably make me lose customers as they could deal with a local and keep it on a cash basis and not declare the stuff on their taxes. Which could result in a lost amount of revenues for these books. As well people in the professional industries (most high income earners) may not be allowed to gamble (part of their code of conduct) and by declaring gambling income on your tax return would thereby likely violate your codes and could be cause to disbar you.

I don't think that the taxing online gaming would really create many more jobs as well. But the tax revenue could certainly help out. Really though taxing online gambling is the last thing that the US government should be concerned about before it gets to about the other 100 things it has to do.

ha ha great post from freedom.

I think a big chunk of the revenue he is referring to is the corporate tax paid by the actual sporstbooks and casinos.

this is a great time to discuss this issue because the economic slump is affecting many governments ability to balance their budget... so finding addtional revenue streams should be a high priority right now, and I think we are already seeing this in some US states.

fair tax is a horrible idea.

what worries me is that the North American governments may very well legalize real sportsbetting but without opening up the industry. They may decide that only the government can legaly own an online gambling operation. The politicians will likely will want all the profits, not just a cut. Much like the lottery. The government here already rips us off with Pro Line, I would hate to see what their sportsbooks would look like. In Ontatio you cant even buy beer or alcohol anywhere but from the government run Beer Store and LCBO, and only until 10pm and 5pm on Sundays...
