Defeated

The bad news is in, and that is that the vote on H.R. 5767 has been defeated in the House Financial Services Committee.

Bummer.

So it looks like America - and by extention the world - is stuck with the useless, unworkable piece of crap that is the UIGEA.

Looking back, I am a little surprised at the strategy of bringing the matter to a vote right now. The Bill appeared to be gathering momentum and co-sponsors, so it would have seemed better to wait a bit longer and let the momentum build.

Either way, it is a sad day when legislators feel it is their duty to put the onus of enforcing laws on financial institutions, rather than actual law enforcement officials.

It is also a sad day for horse racing fans too, since I would imagine that a natural backlash by banks will be to block ALL online gambling transactions, including legal horse racing bets.

However, if there is a light at the end of the tunnel, it is that this matter has illuminated our newest enemy, and he is Rep. Spencer Bachus of Alabama.

Bachus has been quoted as saying, "The banks have decided that this is a financial burden. We have decided, on the other hand, that our children are worth protecting."

That kind of backwards, self-serving, non-logic of using a non-problem (children gambling online) to justify supporting a bad  ideological law shows that this clown considers himself to be the self-appointed moral authority for the entire nation.

We'll be re-visiting him in the future.

Anyone know what Mahoney's vote was for the bill and the amendment?

I may have this wrong, but it appears that Mr. Mahoney of Florida did not vote along with 5 others. Your tax dollars at work my friends! To be fair, it does not indicate if anyone abstained from voting. Here's the link I am using to obtain this information:

Until all of the Jesus freaks are removed from office, this will never be a free country, in case anyone actually believed this was still a free country. The founding fathers must be rolling over in their graves after seeing their once great country now controlled by the religious radical whack-jobs that make up much of the Republican party and also several of the Democrats as well. We the people need to purge these people from office, or learn to live with the erosion of our rights and freedoms. I am not willing to let that happen, unfortunately too many other people in this country are willing to do so, or apathetically simply don't care. So people who value rights and freedom are fighting a losing uphill battle. And to be quite honest I don't know if we can win any more. It may actually be time to consider moving elsewhere, as I see the religious crusades continuing as they have now gained immense power in recent history and nothing or no one is willing to stand in their way. Politicians cower in fear of these people (especially the Democrats who used to completely ignore them, the Republicans have been bought and paid for by the religious radicals for quite some time).

These kinds of things will not pass. It is not that there is no support for the 'yes' vote, but as you remember, there was not enough support for the 'yes' vote to get this legislation passed until it was coupled with a bill that had to pass. It's like a dirty little secret everyone knows about, but nobody wants to touch, openly. It's a political mine field.

It's not right to gamble. But it's all right to cheat, lie, steal, and whatever other deadly sins that they so steadfastly deny, and I guess that is the Political power base is thinking. We don't know what is really good for us, poor children. Seems those in power and the powerful have their own god-like image.

Gman,

While I generally agree with your idea that the government should keep out of the affairs of it's citizens, the bottom line is that they already ARE involved, through the implementation of the UIGEA.

I'm not sure why you would rather keep a restrictive piece of legislation in place rather than the proposed alternative of scrapping that legislation. HR 5767 was actually the tonic to oppressive government interference.

Right now, you might not be affected by the UIGEA, but if it ever gets fully implemented, I think you will change you opinion.

I have no problem with people gambling on-line, although I don't do it myself, I do get offended when the Republicans are solely blamed. I'm not totally familiar with this bill either, but quotes like "inbred red-neck Southern Republicans seems to be totally against what I though"normal" Liberals believed in. I thought liberals believed in diversity and racial equality etc... I think the Democratic Party has been overrun by the Far-Left , way too the Left Obamma loving Whack-jobs that aren't even close to mainstream. The Hollywood nutjobs espousing what they think America should be and the vitriol and nastiness they and every far-left Democrat says is sickening to me and every decent American. This country was founded on Judeo-Christian principles whether one likes it or not and this country is turning into a non-religious, Secular society due to the every power secular progessive movement...There is no more morality or religious freedoms if the Far-Left of the Democratic party gets its way with its big Hollywood rich money machine behind it....They own the media. It's funny the Dem. party doesn't practice what they preach anymore unless it serves to help them....Equality, what equality? I'm sorry if I got off track of that H.R 5797. I get angry at these unapologetic, hatred nutty loons that speak hatred like michael moore and such people that disturbs me.
