How to Win at Betting Baseball

I have received many inquiries about a piece I wrote in March 2008 on Covers about betting baseball and I feel this piece is my most valuable contribution at Covers. Many have enjoyed reading it and I wanted to post it again before the baseball season begins. For those who have read it previously, I am sorry for the redundancy although I have added text and made numerous revisions. Best of luck to everyone this baseball season.

Written in March 2008 (revised in March 2009 and March 2010).

WHY BETTING UNDERDOGS IN BASEBALL IS DIFFERENT FROM ANY OTHER SPORT.

There are several different approaches and strategies to handicapping baseball, but the most fundamental and obvious starting point is one that is taken completely for granted. Baseball is quite unique when it comes to betting because the gaps between the best and worst teams are far closer than in any other sport. Let's look at the other major betting sports.

In the NFL this season, the Indianapolis Colts were 14-2 winning 87.5% of their games. The worst team in the NFL this past season was the St. Louis Rams at 1-15, winning just 6.25% of the time.

In the NBA this season, Cleveland is currently 47-14 winning 77% of their games and Lakers are 45-15 winning 75% of their games. The worst team in the NBA is the New Jersey Nets at 6-53 winning 10.2% of the time.

In NCAA Basketball this season, Kansas, Syracuse and Kentucky are all 27-2 with a 93.1% winning percentage. The “Board” team with the worst record in the country is Marist at 1-28, winning 3.4% of the time.

In NCAA Football, Alabama and Boise State both finished undefeated at 14-0 (100%) while Eastern Michigan and Western Kentucky both finished 0-12 (0%).

Meanwhile, the 2009 baseball season was not that much different than any other baseball season.
The New York Yankees had the best record in the majors last season at 103-59 (63.6%) and the Los Angeles Angels had the second best record at 97-65 (59.9%). The two worst teams in the majors were the Washington Nationals at 59-103 (36.4%) and the Pittsburgh Pirates at 62-99 (38.5%). These records are nowhere close to the best and worst records of any other major betting sport.

So there you have it:

Sport                Best             Worst
NFL                 87.5%            6.25%
NBA                77.0%          10.20%
NCAAB          93.1%            3.40%
NCAAF           100%             0.00%
MLB                63.6%          36.40%

the record doing this last year with these teams was 52-18. and the average chalk per each game averaged out to -135.

so betting 100 dollars a game, you would have made 5200-2025 for a profit of 3175.

Stever1,

          Is that not  5200  -  2430      for a 2770.00  gain

    18 losses x -135 average = 2430  not  2025

Also you would have layed on ave -135 x 70 games =    9450.00

                                                    52 wins x 100  =  + 5200.00

                                                   18 losses x 135=  -  2430.00

                                                            GAIN      =     2770.00

Still very good about a 30% return in 5 months or so!

Does that sound right to you guys?

And your telling Gamehunter he doesn't know what he is doing. Best of luck GH

Last year was my first year wagering at Baseball. I read your write-up and thought I knew what you were talking about. This year, I really understand what you're saying. Thanks for putting in the time, Bro. It's appreciated. BTW, do have any certain way you look at spring training ball or is it . Last year a capper who can't be named had an awesome spring. Thanks again for giving back.
GameHunter says:

Thanks KSP...glad you enjoyed it....spring training is all about getting the starting lineups before game time and finding out in advance how long the starters will pitch and who else is expected to throw that day..it is a completely different dynamic than regular season handicapping.

Good Write-up, agree with 90% of it.

Disagree in terms of betting dogs....not that it's a good idea, but the numbers you provided are misleading.

Yes the worst team in baseball hits well above the average of the worst teams in other sports, but that doesn't mean dogs have more value in baseball....in fact you could even argue the opposite.

Your example failed to incorporate actually ML and spread figures....and that is the only way to show true value.

Yes, the Washington Nationals may win 35% of their games, but they don't get nearly the kind of ML prices that other poor teams in other sports do.

Marist could go 1-29 and still end up making more money then a baseball team that goes 60-102.  If Marist is -10000, and the Nats are -180 every game, that is a huge difference.

I don't believe there is any more/less value in baseball in terms of betting underdogs....it's all relative.

MLBguru says:
03/08/10 02:52PM

It must also be noted, that although those numbers are accurate they are also misleading in the sense that those percentages apply to games that were not necessarily dogs.

It may be the case that the poor team is laying the chalk, ala Zack Greinke and the Royals which is not uncommon.

Airmail26 says:
03/08/10 04:25PM

I don't like it...you are comparing Baseball with NFL, NCAAB and NBA...The difference is all of those have spreads and baseball is a money line.  Yeah Marist is 1-28 or whatever...but they were 10-10-1 against the spread last time I checked.  Apples and Oranges.

GameHunter says:
03/08/10 06:48PM

We're not talking about spreads here. I think you are mixing up apples and oranges here; not me. There are moneylines in college basketball. My point is in baseball any team can beat any other team on any given day. It's unlike that in any other sport. Marist is not going to beat too many teams and there are certain teams they flat out can't beat. Meanwhile the worst team in baseball beat the best team in baseball 2 out of 3 times they played last season.

I am advocating that too many people feel a false sense of security laying heavy favorites in baseball because of course, they are more likely to win. What I am advocating is an approach where people shouldn't be afraid of playing dogs and can shoot to average between +105 to +110 on their dogs and would only have to hit 47.7% to breakeven.

Lot of good stuff here, BUT throw out comparasins to college  sports,  in football they play only a few games which actually define their season. and of course the talent level has a great disparity in it. some students dont go to college to get smart, college is just a platform for them to sharpen their skills and look to move onto the pros. do you think anyone who went to harvard  ever decided to play professional ball ? But ill bet they turned out a shit load of lawyers. So that leaves you with the professional sports. basketball and hockey, the cream usually rises to the top, the more skill and talent you have, the greater the probability that you will win and there is more room for error in these sports.  football, 1 play can completely change the outcome of a game, ex. pick-6, a returned fumble. Baseball you dont have to have alot of skill to win. Hows that ? no pitcher has that much control to pitch a ball within 1 inch of his exact intended target most of the time, but missing your target by only that much can easily be the difference between a pop out to a homerun, a strikeout to a foul ball. if you had a pitching rotation that had  supreem accuracy to the inch, then you wouldnt need infielders or an outfield. no pitcher is that accurate so the playfield is always a little more even on game day and public perception of favorites is always inflated so there is always value in dogs in baseball.

The best part of this information to me was that it caused me to do a mental checklist and evaluation of the factors that I consider before a baseball wager.  As with any "system" there are always components outside standard that factor in.  GH, I enjoyed your defense from the critics all most as much as the original content!  Thanks for sharing.

I dabble in the reverse runlines but it's not easy to get down on them.....the Braves went almost 6 months without winning a game by only one run. They were golden on the reverse runline. I think they are an interesting proposition and I do advocate using them.
GameHunter says:
03/11/10 08:04PM

I play between 5-8 plays on a regular card but I may be looking to play less games this year.
GameHunter says:
03/16/10 12:34AM

Umpires, umpires, umpires.....after the first game of a series, you know who the home plate umps will be for the rest of the series. Certain umps are pitcher friendly and certain umps are hitter friendly. Covers has great stats in the baseball section on each umpire. Use the info to your advantage.
GameHunter says:

As I wrote in the original posts, I was up over 80 units at the all star break averaging 1.5 units per game but then got lazy and was traveling and proceeded to lose almost 3/4's of it back. I need to learn from that mistake. Three years ago I won 140 units in the regular season. Two years ago I won 70 units.

GH you said it with umpires being the key to getting an "edge" with totals.  That said, I am positive the bulk of your profits were from sides last season.  (Those who also paid close attention in 09 would probably agree with that assessment).

Did you ever go back and break it down - I remember asking you later in the year and you hadn't done so at that time.  Just curious.

In any event you have an obvious skill set for finding long term value in the moneyline in any case, great work.

What happened last year. All Dogs?

You are missing the fact that the linesmakers know this and this kind of stuff is all factored into the line.  Rarely do you see teams that are +300 or higher in mlb, usually the highest on most days is around +200 or so.   While in the nba, you'll have dogs that are +1500 or higher on any given day.  If anything, mlb bettors take TOO MANY dogs because they are afraid to lay the juice even if it warrants being laid.

If you're betting on the worst teams every day, there is no guarantee you will profit on them just like any other sport.  You need to find value in the underdogs you take, and likewise, find the value in the favorites.  Too many people in here stick to taking dogs only, when you really should be taking almost an even mix of favorites/dogs.   Just my two cents, gl this year game.

Agree

Wow I was just reading all the post and just thinking to myself "what a great post and Game even if everyone doesnt agree with everything or all your picks, you are greatly respected" and I can't remember the last time I was on covers and no matter what the topic is, there is always someone that talks shit, and here we have it. This is unreal, what was the purpose of your post Stever1? Who are you and what have you done? besides come in peoples thread and talk shyt. You don't have to agree with GAME, and GAME isn't on here bragging or trying to become a tout, so what's the purpose of trying to trash him? Totally uncalled for. But the more you live, the more you run into people that you just can't figure out. Thanks for the write up GAME. I've always viewed your posts and must be honest, have never quite liked most of your picks, but for some reason had the utmost respect for you, and now I see why. And the reason why I have never liked most of your picks, because I've always been that classic high fav bettor, you know the one Vegas luvs,  but you have definitely given me a different outlook on baseball. I'm not sure what planet you are on but I hit the Nationals at +250 or so a few times last year. I saw +300 plenty of times throughout the year. He didn't say bet every shitty team every day he is talking about finding value!

How many +1500 NBA dogs hit this year? Look up how many favorites of -14 won SU???, never mind Ill do it for you...

SO FAR this year favorites of -14 or more are 25-2 SU so good luck picking the 2 to hit the +1500!!

The way to win at baseball betting is to pick winners.

Now, don't you all feel better.

There is no sure fire system, but if you choose wisely, do your due diligence, and manage your money wisely, YOU TOO can win at baseball betting. It's all about the pitching in baseball and the prices involved.

I would say that this is very bad advice.

Play as many games as you have an edge on.  Todays 5th best game might be better than tomorrows best game.  It is a mistake to limit yourself to a certain number of games on an arbitrary time period that you define that has no statistical meaning.

GL this season.

It is clear that you want us to run a police state around here with no freedom of speech.  Ban half the posters in the baseball forum, how would that make anyone feel at ease posting on our forums?

Here is an analogy.  A home owner plants some flowers and receives many comments on how great his flowers look.  Someone comes to your front door one day and says, I don't like the way you plant your flowers.  The home owner goes in his house and comes out putting up signs saying I am going to kill so and so, others calling him every name in the book, etc.  He goes to stores around town and other people's homes and says the same things.  Soon it is a full blown feud spreading all over town, involving everyone and dividing the town.  Just because someone didn't like the flowers, that in a nutshell is the covers forums.  All could be avoided if the home owner said I will just plant my flowers and enjoy them myself and with the other people that enjoy my flowers.

I don't see the analogy of a 4 time home break in to someone on an internet forum having a difference of opinion and someone going bonkers over it.  I appreciate you comments and the mod team continues to monitor this site to the best of our abilities.  You are free to disagree with it.

With all due respect, as suggested by others above, why would moderators move a productive and informative thread (which many have enjoyed reading) like this to the Penalty Box when the content is a great example of what this site is about (sharing information and insight) rather than deleting 1 or 2 posts out of 279 in the thread and boxing the perpetrators?

Here's a good example: One day a guy walks into a library and starts screaming ethnic and racial slurs at the top of his lungs and offends just about everyone there. The police show up and let the guy go home without recourse and shut down the library.

That's exactly what was done to this thread! I would think that a moderator would want to do everything possible to make the Covers' website the best it can be.

How does moving this thread to the PB rather than deleting one or two posts made by worthless posters make this site better? In addition, quite frankly, maybe I missed something, but I don't even see anything in this thread that is overly offensive unless I missed something.

excellent stuff as always GH!

"Similarly, a bet in baseball should not necessarily be a bet on who you think will win, but rather who you think will outperform the line and odds and provides the best value."

so true!

it is certainly best to start favorite-betting-freshmen thinking of more and more dogs, but do you later find the opposite problem in sophomore handicappers---bettors not taking chalk above a certain arbitrary number, even tho there may be tremendous value of your line vs. books?

as Bob writes of in this article.

Great info, research. Last year was my first full year of betting baseball. I lost in April, lost a little less in May, and finished strong on the right side of the ledger beginning in June. Patterns began to develop that just aren't there early on, especially with Run Lines (Phillies and Red Sox mostly), where my average win was probably +115, +120. Thinking of waiting until May to even make my first baseball bet. Betting baseball is definitely a different animal and I believe you've given some great insight to all of us. Thank you!

Mr GameHunter it is great to see you in this forum! I have to say, I am a very profecient bettor mostly in college basketball, but pro too, but college I have the  Sag, and the RPI to use, with sos, etc and I have a "system", in which has certtain facets of criteria that MUST BE MET, or I do not post as a system play! I went 49-23-2 on those games, and they were all NCAAB!

I have to say , you need to publish this! I DONT bet on baseball for some of the VERY reasons you stated! I only came in here to read some threads on MLB for the ULTIMATE RACE, which I have done very well in all three I have been in! If I could get my "baseball capping, and NHL, knowledge down, I maybe could catch up, and be in the prizes at least! Because I forgot to pick or  only picked one, and went to do some research, and forgot to finish! So, I am about 16 or so picks that I could have made I didnt, I digress, I wanted to tell you this was the most concise, comprehensive, and informative baseball capping information I have ever read, easily understood, because I know how to count cards "to a point",,one deck, or two easily, and I go to LA Downs, and I NEVER bet on a favorite, because for every $2 I can only say 60 80 cents, or less! When you used that anology, I am getting my brain around it!  Thank You, andI realize  it will take time, but I feel you just gave me a blueprint on how to start forming a "system", if you will, for capping baseball! I NEVER rely on ANYONES pick unless I have already picked it, except on baseball, and Hockey, although I am getting better with Hockey, but I dont bet on either!  BOL FRIEND! PG

GameHunter

I like looking for value and your writeup made me give a closer look at my beloved Expos( a.k. a. Senators) dwelling  in the pits last year.

They had 33 wins at home out of 81 and that drew good value each time they played..

They had about 26 home series and betting to win on the last game of each series netted 4. 85 units

wins 15 /  26 at an ave. +105.7 and 11 losses at an ave. of 100.2 bet.

That is about a 57.7% win rate with dogs. Added together, 57.7 x 1.057 would net 60 %.  I wouldn't have looked for this if it wasn't for your insightfull piece. Keep up the good work

P.S. If my math is off that is because I do eveything manually, please forgive errors

The fact that this thread (perhaps the only useful piece of information this cesspool of a site has on it) is in the box, just goes to show you how much of a joke this site is and the clowns who run it should be ashamed of themselves...
should be cleaned up and archived as mentioned above
MaddenGuru says:
07/06/10 12:33AM

I post because hidden beneath the sludge there are some cool people with quality insight who are here for the same reason as I am which is to make money.  It is a shame though that most of these people who contribute useful info (such as Gamehunter in this very thread) are either boxed, banned, or just find it pointless to participate because of all of the bullshit and drama that goes on that quite frankly could be prevented if the mods changed their approach.

You are recommending that I direct my insults at the people who ruined it for anyone else.  How is that useful.  That will make me just as bad as them and will get me boxed or banned.  This is exactly the type of behavior that promotes their behavior.

Maybe I was a little bit extreme by calling you all clowns, because I happen to have a ton of respect for you personally and always check out your pucks and baseball threads, but I just think a lot of this nonsense could be avoided if the mods took a different approach.

MaddenGuru says:
07/06/10 10:40AM

Um...how about police the threads a little bit better and not allow stuff to get out of hand like it does.

I can go through the majority of the threads currently in the baseball forum with your "manifesto" next to me and box the majority of the posts that are violating it.

Doing this might actually prevent a lot of the BS before it happens.

Instead you cherry pick when you feel like boxing people and unfortunately it is too late because by then the person putting in the hard work and time to post their picks and analysis FOR FREE, are stuck defending themselves by stooping down to the bashers' level and then ironically get boxed themselves...great system you have.

MaddenGuru says:
07/06/10 10:48AM

Since your so interested I can create an analogy to help you understand what I am talking about.

Let's say there is a law that says if you break into someone's house you are supposed to go to jail.  Now someone breaks into your house and the cops do nothing...they let him go. Then tomorrow night he breaks in...same thing happens...cops do nothing.  The night after that...guy breaks in...same old story...cops do nothing.  Now the fourth night the guy breaks in and and you break his legs with a baseball bat...cops come and you both go to jail.  Seems like if the cops would have properly done their job and put the guy in jail the first time the law was broken that the subsequent events wouldn't have taken place....and now to boot you have an innocent guy in jail who was just sick and tired of the cops doing nothing and he was defending his house.

How bout that approach??  Is this clearer??

See post 141 in the link below for another example of what I am talking about...the people who are here to discuss sports and pick winners are sick of the place being run down by scum and nothing being done about it.

MaddenGuru says:
07/06/10 01:18PM

I think that the current state of the forums and the way they are governed fall more closely in the middle of both our views/examples...I can't completely disagree with your analysis, yet I think my analogy holds a lot of water as well...that being said, lets just hope things get better and people can enjoy their time posting here and not go somewhere else.

MaddenGuru says:
07/07/10 05:47PM

I would imagine he is still capping on a daily basis but I can't say I blame him for not posting given the current condition of these forums.  People don't get it that when someone posts they are taking time out of their day and getting nothing in return so for someone to have to put up with the garbage that GH puts up with is absurd.  No one has a gun to people's heads to tail yet they feel like its GH's or someone elses fault if they lose.  Unfortunately for the mature member's of this site who appreciate the quality insight that posters like GH offer, we are the ones who pay the price.  Until a the forum undergoes an overhaul nothing will change and quality posters will continue to be chased away by greedy immature fools who don't have a clue what they're doing.

MaddenGuru says:

attention on deck mfrs....this thread is probaly after mine and sammys gang, the best thing out there.

REMEMBER if a Team Wins/Loses(as in pass dont pass dice bets, your choice of comfort,r u a opto or pesso?) 3 three games in a row you STAY WITH that team until you lose.

ATTENTION: eg. Roulette, you see three blacks in a row u stay with black ,you will lose 1one Bet.  when you see the mets win 3 you bet them til they lose getting laid the whole way..  when you see yanks lose three in a row u bet against them getting bloody good odds at that.    there is room for refinement such as betting good/exc teams on losing streak, betting medicore/bad teams on winning streaks.

attention on deck mfrs....this thread is probaly after mine and sammys gang, the best thing out there.

This FACT i tell you as a friend, as yr Mayor as a man keeping no secrets....I thank Kenny "tuinol"kitler in 1967 late fall at the stickball part of the 'yard, after bob gibson get the 'folk to lower the mound 3inches(?) or no one woulda got a hit in 68..."when a team wins three in a row u stay with them til they lose"  truer words never been heard.....from the phone call vid, to the piston ahead of the ap news to the sage advice any father would tell a son. He is using the same logic a person at a casino does when they see that black has come 10 in a row and they play red. He thinks they are due to win.

Personally I don't against streaks...just asking for trouble.

this is great read.....even if I disagree with some points, it still helps me get my head on straight for the season....anyone who bets MLB knows that its a marathon, not a sprint.....you might win a week here or there but to make the money you have to play each and every week.
I dont even think of betting MLB until May 1st....if I do bet in April it is just me playing around with 20-50 dollar bets.....nothing to big....come May I like to think I have a good read on the season and I have a months worth of info to go off of.....last year I was down 4k at the break only to come back and go up 1k at seasons end....you might think that is weak and it is, but the 2nd half I lowered my unit bet from the 1st half....if I would have kept my unit bet at 100-200 I would have been up a good amount...... but I faded and I paid dearly for it.....lesson learned is keep it up and use the system that works best for you and remember that you can never research to much....stats, stats stats.....you can never have to many stats to look into.

good lick everyone, I am getting excited for 2011 MLB,

Sharp maybe you missed him cashing out huge at Meadowlands last year. Think it was around 60k on a pick 6 ticket.

Maybe IG5 can find the thread.

Guys regardless of how GH is doing this year his philosophy on betting bases is a good one.  He may not be executing it great to start the season but he is right on the philosophy, which is the point of this thread.
jesron1269 says:

Wrigs did I not say he might not be executing it well?  The philosophy is still a good one.  I consider it before ever placing a bet.  It is the value philosophy.  There is a lot of "lock" heavy favorites that I used to put into ML parlays or play RL that I don't anymore because there is NO VALUE.

Seriously Wrigs we are talking about two different things here and our argument is like two ships passing at night.  My point has NOTHING to do with how GH is doing.  My point is that if you boil down this thread (well at least how it originated) at its root you will see that the essence of it is still a good philosophy.  I have used parts of it and it has kept me off certain games and put me on others and I have profited as a result.  I honest cannot say that about every thread I have read on this website.

I never bash anyone, but his picks for the last 2 years have been about as bad as anyone could make. He's got both the Rsox and Rays to win today, something that neither one has done all year. Where is the genius in that ? Weird, Wrigs. It just ain't right.
