Florida Gators -4

The lost art of basketball and non-conference play……….

What in  tarnations is going on here?  We are in the thick of conference play in the NCAA basketball schedule and you are now provided a nice Non-conference game for your enjoyment as Ohio’s own Xavier Muskateers take on a once but not recently power house of a basketball program Florida Gators.  The whole recent history as to why this game is being played is documented throughout the internet and sports pages as an effort to “beef up” the Gators strength of schedule due to recent poor showings of SEC teams in the end of year tourney……that said, let’s get it on!

Xavier comes into this game having won 8 of their last 10 games by an average of 9.5 PPG and is tied for 1st place in the A-10 along with Cincinnati and Richmond.  They’re averaging 71.7 PPG away from home while sporting a 3-5 record away from the confines of the Cintas Center.  This is a drastic difference from their 86.5 PPG that they dish out as the host of ball games.  What is also a bit unnerving for the Musketeers is their road defense which is allowing teams that normally shoot the ball at 43% FGP to shoot it at 46% and score 74.5 PPG when normally scoring 70 PPG.  This obviously is an advantage the Gators will take advantage of.

Xavier has some ballers on their team….Jordan Crawford, Terrell Holloway and Jason Love are all averaging over 10 PPG (Crawford just about 20 PPG).  They have the tools and can use them but are having a difficult time winning on the road against good defensive teams.  Their away losses include last week’s pummeling from Dayton (90-65) and losses to Temple, Wake Forest, Butler, Kansas St, and neutral games against Baylor and Marquette.  Of these games, the Temple and Dayton were conference games.  So where am I going with this?  Xavier, while a good team at home and in A-10 play for the most part, is an average Joe while traveling.  They have a rookie coach in Chris Mack who so far is reaping the benefits of having most of last year’s Sweet 16 team return to play under him this year.  Overall, Xavier is a well put together team but has issues on the road…….

In step Billy Donovan and the Florida Gators…..The SEC of course is well known for their football programs and everyone knows that “Tebow” plays for the Gators.  Don’t forget, there are some quality basketball programs in the SEC (Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee and Vanderbilt).  AND if your memory isn’t too short, the Gator’s did win 2 of the last 4 National Championships….that being said, what going on with them this year and why are they going to win this game?

Florida comes in having lost 2 of their last 4 games (both away games) and are returning home for this oddly scheduled non-conference game.  This is an advantage for Florida.  Nothing like coming home to face a team that is coming off a road loss.  Strangely enough having won 2 National Championships, Florida does not really have a good Home Field Advantage rating (#242), but are still 11-2 at home this year.  They averaging 73 PPG at home against teams allowing 68 and are holding opponents to 58 PPG who normally are scoring 71 PPG.  This is Florida’s key to success in this game, the “D”.  Xavier has shown this year that while on the road against good defensive teams, they don’t do to well ATS (3-6).

Florida too has some players on their team that can put up some good numbers for you.  They have 5 guys on the team that are averaging 10 PPG or better (Vernon Macklin is averaging 9.9 PPG/10.5 ppg in his last 12 games).  They are well coached  and play very well at home; outscoring their opponents by 15 so far this year.

Researching the numbers and stats for this game (Xavier away vs. Florida home) has the edge going to Florida in most Offensive Categorys (PPG, EFG, Offensive Reb% and Assist/Turnover Ratio).  Defensively, Florida is the better team significantly at home and should be very effective against the slightly smaller Xavier squad.

I must point out that if one cares too much about Strength of Schedule, Xavier has the upper hand in that category….that being said, they have also lost each and every game to any team ranked in the top 50 of the pomeroy ratings. Florida is #47.  So yes, their schedule was strong, but they haven’t done well against it the difficult part of it…..

This game should be a close game.  If Florida can play without too many mistakes and there defense can play to its numbers (which they have done at home all year), they should cover this -4 spread…….

Xavier is good, but away from home against a good defense is an issue……and still should be tonight……

Good Luck My Friends……..

One more consolation….I’m loving the Ivy league Saturday plays:

Yale -11 over Dartmouth…if Brown can beat them by 15 @ Brown, then why not Yale covering 11 @ Yale…..B2B roadies for an already miserable Dartmouth team?  Big Green Loses Big Time.....

Good Luck My Friends…..
