12/14 NFL: A MNF service announcement/question: When was the last time the spread really mattered?

Generally, for MNF or most primetime games, you can bet the favorite or underdog with confidence knowing that either the fave will win in blow-out fashion or the underdog will win straight-up. That means, FORGET THE SPREAD! That means, DON'T READ INTO THE F**KING LINE! That means, THE SPREAD DOES NOT MATTER!

Sorry for the bold, but i'm sure there are discussions out there that have these "line-readers" trying to decipher the spread any given week... that just cracks me up sometimes. I can agree that it is helpful to read into line movements and certain spreads but the point is -- just take a look at previous primetime matchups. Did the spread really mattered?

So... people. Please. Stop it with the "read the line" crap, okay? Especially when its Monday night.

I was leaning towards San Fran in this one but since this particular matchup of divisional rivals have a revenge factor to it, i'm afraid to bet against the Cardinals. Especially given the fact that these redbirds do play very well on the road and they're generally money in such spots. This defense can make things happen and could very well shut-down Gore and Coffee tonight.

On the offensive side i don't see how the 49ers 27th ranked pass defense can contain let alone stop Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin; and don't forget Steve Breaston -- he's no slouch either. There really isn't a lot of 5-10 corners that can matchup with Fitzgerald and Boldin. The absence of Nate Clements is probably a big part of why this 49ers pass defense is suffering. Dre Bly is still serviceable but i think he gets beat. Shawntae Spencer is 6-1 and have good speed and is a decent matchup at right corner. I'm sure he's the one that'll give Fitzgerald extra attention. But its not Fitzgerald's speed that he's concerned about -- its his technique.

Flip the field, i think Rogers-Cromartie can take care of Crabtree. He's actually taller than Crabtree and can actually play as a wide-out; he just doesn't have Crabtree-hands. Otherwise there really isn't much more the Cardinals DBs are really concerned with than when they had to face Favre and his trio of receivers.

And then we get to Alex Smith versus Kurt Warner. I could never understand how this guy flourished under Urban Meyer's spread offense and couldn't do jack-chit with the 49ers. And this year, the 49ers did some outfitting with new offensive coaches and coordinators. Surprisingly, its the 49ers defense that have improved. Pop Warner is playing hurt and he might be due for a bad outing, according to his "star chart" readings that is. But i think i've learned my lesson going against a pious man like Kurt Warner. I went against him last week and he certainly proved me wrong -- or it was just a case of the Vikings sucking at the wrong time or me and the right time for the Cardinals. Maybe it could be just my luck that when i support him this week and he does come out with a disappointing game. It sure wasn't his "lucky" day on September 13, 2009.

Over/Under -- i'm partial to the Under. This could be a defensive struggle of sorts if both sides can't run the ball. But i can also see the Over hit because both pass defenses suck, statistically speaking. But when i sense that one team might not be able to score enough to help the cause, i can't take the Over. Cardinals could possibly put up 27 points tonight. How much will the 49ers contribute? I say much less than 27 points.

For the record:

309/300 Arizona Cardinals -4 -103

In 2007, the Cardinals lost their first game of the season on a late San Francisco touchdown with 22 seconds left in a game they were up 17-13.  Then in what looked to be a great revenge spot against those same 49ers on their home field in Arizona, they lost straight up in that game as 10 point favorites.

Hey you make a good point, but this is the NFL. These guys are pros for a reason. Anything can happen on any given Monday.  3 WR's don't make a team, yah there good but, It takes all 64 players to make a team.(Everybody has to play good). Good luck with what ever you pick. Aloha!

I think Ariz pulls it out as well.  The only thing holding me back is their ATS record as favs.  Overall they are 8-4 ATS...6-0 as a dog and 2-4 as the fav. GL kane

I have the Cards -3 ATS, tough call if playing totals tonight.

Don't think 49ers defense can hold Warner and company to a low score again. Alex Smith will be the key, maybe he will score some points and turn over some INTS and fumbles to make the over?

No Biorhythm/ephemerides readings for the offensive linemen?

The matter of the fact is, I believe SF's offensive line is much more banged up. To compound that, MIN great offensive line couldn't do much against the ARI defense, so this bolds well for the CARDS in this match up.

On the other side, the vaunted MIN defense really couldn't get to Warner at all, now this SF defense is really underrated and they do a great job of pressuring, esp. from the linebacking positions. This is something that the VIKES didn't do, mainly relying on their front four to bring the heat. This match up has big play potentials written all over it.

Will make a small play on ARI here.

CalBear - Oh yeah. That too. The fave/underdog aspect.

The Cardinals makes excellent road dogs. But as a fave, a different story.

But since its Monday night, all you have to do is to just take the better team and not worry about the spread. For me, the better team tonight is the one catching steam.

When the number is less than 7 points, the pointspread only comes into play 10% of the time......not my opinion its what the numbers bare out.

kickinA - Darn. You got me. Thought no one would notice. Hehe.

Football is about winning the battle in the trenches. Gotta take into consideration of the O-Lines versus the D-Lines.

Cardinals Offensive Line:

RT C-Levi Brown; RG C-Deuce Lutui; C C-Lyle Sendlein; LG B+Reggie Wells; LT C+Mike Gandy

49ers Offensive Line:

RT C-Adam Snyder; RG C+Chilo Rachal; C C+Eric Heitmann; LG B+David Baas; LT C+Barry Sims

Although. these grades don't tell me anything new.  Still like the Cardinals.

wow tell us something we didnt fucking already know.  Spread usually dont matter when it is 7 or less in all football games not just prime time dumbass.
kickinA says:

Maybe that 10% factor is after the game. Not when the game is still going on where the vast majority of bettors are sweating their balls off through the whole ordeal of a small spread.

Kane, the point spreads very rarely come into play any time. IMO

It's like I always say, You're either on the right side or not. That's why teasers are for suckers.

flip798 - Nope. I had the Vikings because Kurt Warner had "bad mojo". But so did Brett Favre. It was a coin flip as to which quarterback would have a bad night and i ended up on the Vikings side.

The line is the last thing i handicap when i look at a matchup. Seriously, i had 6 picks on Sunday. None of those picks had any regards for the line. All i knew was that the team i pick was going to win and thus should cover whatever spread there was. Absolutely nothing to do with the lines. Nothing.

But yes, i did say i agree that line movements do tell us something. Packers line was steaming and i wish i went with it.

Tonight, the Cardinals line is steaming. But its mostly public perception of course. Nothing the public doesn't already know. One, the 49ers suck; two, the Cardinals coming off an easy win. So, i'm not suprised with this sort of line move.

Public fave/home dog? I'm sure its a 50/50 prop at best if you run the numbers for the season. The books doesn't care nor should i if they can get that kind split for the season.

Im in both sides on this one, i have cards +3 in a 5 team teaser of 140 to win 490, & im about going to bet the 49ers +5 250 either way i can win both tickets if not im in a win win situation
flip798 says:

Don't read into the lines? Look I am sure you had Minnesota that night and couldn't believe how Arizona demolished them right? I had the Cards because they were a home dog and public was pounding the Vikes which is same reason I will take the 49ers tonight. The spread comes into play when you bet the Vikes that night because it looked so easy and went out the window at half time cuz they were getting pounded. So the opening line does influence which way YOU bet even if the game itself isnt close.            49ers +4
flip798 says:

You make a good point but here is my point Vegas uses last weeks performance to bait the public into a sucker bet. Arizona looked like world beaters last week and SF like shit. The NFL is all about match ups and SF has the Cards number. Also no one gives a shit about SF and this is their one game to show what they got on prime time. Read into the spread a little more it pays better.
