Hawaii point shaving rumors.....

I won't say how I know, but I do know that every year, and after every game that Hawaii does NOT cover the spread, the HPD and FBI receives calls that their is point shaving.

From what I hear, this goes on for almost every football program.  (a team doesn't cover, the police get calls)

I also knew of this investigation weeks ago, and I also know a lot of details that were getting preposterous. The rumors were just getting plain outlandish.

I know many players on a very close level, and in fact know exactly where they are on their days off.

Of the main players I know, I would say no way in the world this is true. I cannot vouch for fringe players.

Someone needs to say, "Ummmmm, Hawaii has the most injured starters on offense in the NATION. Of course they will fucking struggle!"

i need to interject into the conversation between Teaser78 and -29-... you guys are looking at this much too simplistically... don't do that!  that is what makes scams like these possible...

Hawaii wasn't trying to lose that game straight up... somebody else already pointed out their M.O.... fall behind early to bad teams, then make a 2nd half comeback, enough to win but not cover...

but OF COURSE, you do that and you're playing with fire... Hawaii gave away the first half, and UNLV TOOK the 2nd half from them, because Hawaii isn't a good enough team to just turn it off and turn it on... this isn't Oregon or LSU... we're talking about a below average team to begin with...

they weren't TRYING to lose the game... come on!  you gotta be smart about these things, because once people start getting into ridiculous scenarios, it all falls apart, and these people get away with it...

see it for what it is!

remember guys... they lost the SJ St game, too!

same situation... fall behind first half... make a furious comeback in the 2nd half... unfortunately, Hawaii had to give up a 2 pt conversion to make the spread 5 (not covering) instead of 8 (covering)... and by doing that, they left the door open for SJ St to win the game on a late TD... which they did!

Hawaiiguy sighting, too bad under this circumstance.  Can you offer more about this?
Ice4Blood says:
11/23/11 01:21PM

that is a very good point!  when these things surface, Vegas is always the first to know... but they will never make a peep about it until the FBI gets involved on their end...

think about it... if Vegas knows a team is shaving points, that's a money-maker for them... because they can shave the lines in that direction, and induce all this money to be bet on the team that is shaving points...

look at that line for this week's game... 17 points at home against Tulane?  i think a lot of us looked at that line and thought it was a gift!  i didn't bet it personally because i had already suspected this team wasn't making an effort to win games...

but i'll bet a bunch of people jumped on Hawaii before this story broke...
Teaser78 says:
11/23/11 01:36PM

ok you say what you want ... I know what I saw and the action on the ml bets in vegas speaks for itself.  A game that open at +1600 and closed at +700 .... Unlv got so much ML action the line moved that much ... things that makes you go mmmmm ... Why the hell would anyone bet ML on Unlv  plus Moniz was giving the ball away go back and watch the game dude .. you stop .... as far as the SJSU game they tried there best to give that game away and be down 20 at the half but its not there fault SJSU is horrible and everytime Moniz throw a horrible pick that my mother wont throw .. SJSU would just turn the ball back over ...  please we will see but I bet you someone will be getting arrested and federal charges are coming

Ice4Blood says:
11/23/11 01:42PM
still thinking too simplistically...

if you know a team is favored by 18 points, and they are shaving points... wouldn't you bet the ML???  of course!  it is just common sense... a team that is trying to shave points is in serious jeopardy of losing the game...

yea, it's possible they were trying to lose, but based on the evidence from other games, and the nature of point-shaving, i think you're barking up the wrong tree...

and i watched the Hawaii-UNLV game... at least until i got sick to my stomach... yes!  Hawaii, and Moniz, were definitely fixing games... i would bet everything i have on it...

"Not enough evidence to open an investigation." That's because HPD runs Half the gambling houses here.  If they investigate than they will be looking at a lot of their own.

I'm sure this type of letter gets sent to universities all the time. What surprises me is why did UH make this public?  I really don't get that part.

Ice4Blood says:
11/23/11 04:00PM

actually, no, that's not what i'm saying... i'm saying they were shaving points, and when you shave points, you invariably end up losing games you weren't trying to lose...
Teaser78 says:
11/23/11 04:23PM

oh ok ...well they werent just trying to shave points they were trying to lose outright and they did .... the proof is in the outcome ...lol any whatever at this point ....

I can understand the idea of point shaving in football, but you must have multiple players involved so it does not seem obvious. In basketball yes point guard throws bad passes or loses ball on cross overs. The hardest part is keeping quiet! It is damn near impossible. Someone would say something if this has been going on for a long period of time. SMU paid players for years and got away with it until someone decided they would talk and happened to save envelopes containing checks. If you are a player shaving points, you need a money source to place bets. The player now has leverage over the money source and can extort money to prevent talking. Leverage is the albatross of any dirty scenario, so until there is a pile of bodies I can not be convinced that a secret point shaving scam has existed for years in Hawaii. Too many people to keep quiet and nobody on the hawaii team is going pro, so all the reason for books and money making media frenzies to come about for these broke players. Time will tell!

Lol.....It finally comes out! But seriously I have lived Hawaii all my life and I've suspected this somewhat but REALLY guys this kinda shit happens all around in every sport!!! But just to let you guys know a little sumthin, the coach we had before our current coach was heavily into gambling so YES he did make certain calls to make things go certain ways if you know what I mean! And how do I know? Well lets just say I knew the person he put his bets in to! So honestly this ain't any"New"news. Hawaii people LOVE to gamble.....too bad it's not legal here!

I depend on the Hawaiians to get this kind of info.

SPREAD THE LOVE GUYS.

I live on the mainland but visited hawaii several years ago. I know a few players on the team and can say ALL college foozball players are on the sauce and like looking at point spreads more than they do reading college text books.

everyone who thinks the people that live here are "loading it up" is dumb, im local and lost tons of $ on this team betting with and against them many times..I never figure it out and a lot of locals probably feel the same.

my opinion on this shaving points is that it's probably true but the police dont want to investigate because they are in some heat right now esp b/c a major got busted for meth possession.  I think its really easy for a single player ( like the QB or WR) to bet on themselves when it comes to player props!!! the games Moniz shouldve thrown over 300 he never really did.  Too bad football is becoming so much about money that people with power will sweep this under the rug
hamads says:

Ice4Blood...I concur with the two instances where our extra points got blocked and returned for 2 costing us the cover...I lost in both those games and that was hella .  our special teams are horrors, I don't know of any fbs school that had that kinda crap happen in the same season

I know the feeling. How Hawaiiguy try to defend his football team, but for the grambling prospective winning lead 28-7 halftime against Utah State was given. Hawaii give up to much play and yes Hawaii have defense. Please do not tell me Hawaii cannot covers when you leading 28-7 against Utah. This problem never happen last years. They basically have the same players minus couple players. Now tell me, If this is not point shaving then Hawaiiguy you are the biggest liars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kaainoa2- Your right about Moniz. He's a degenerate gambler like his bookie brother. Time will tell. Maybe he ends up like Art Schlichter and gets caught or someone on the team comes forward and blows the whistle. Then they get put on probation ! Oh my !
UHQB says:
11/24/11 11:41PM
Ice4blood, you just don't get it. Teaser78 is right on the money. Hawaii is not fixing every game they've played. There are certain games that are suspect. One of those is the UNLV game where the moneyline was bet down heavily. QB Moniz threw the ball like crap. Couple of defensive backs looked lost. Bottomline....you don't lose to the worst team in college by 3 TD's after being favored by almost 3 TD's. Hawaii locals know that Moniz's brother is a local bookie. But it's hard to prove if a few players were in on it. But take care of them under the table later when the season is over with. A lot of Hawaiians came to Las Vegas for the game and bet it heavily. I don't think they laid the points with Hawaii. HPD will go through the motions but won't do a damn thing. NCAA will investigate but who's going to blow the whistle when you already won your bet.

I posted this in the other thread as well.

Okay

I am born and raised in Hawaii.  I went to school in Seattle and just

moved back to Hawaii  little over a month ago.  I have friends that

played and our still playing currently on the Hawaii team.  And last

year there were rumors that some guys on the team were shaving points.

So this goes back all the way to last season. Also it is known in Hawaii

that Bryant Moniz's brother is also associated with being part of a

local house in Hawaii.. I guarantee you that this information will never

come out.

College football isn't the best sport to fix, it is college basketball and international soccer. Just sayin. A whole hell of a lot of college seniors who are the stars of their basketball team know they aren't going to make it in the pros and they are approached not to lose, but to not cover the spread on the road. It is statistically proven that their is a large dip right at the point spread in what should be a perfect bell shaped curve (thousands of games included) Soccer is a joke, you watch enough games and you see the baseball equivalent of an ump calling a runner to first safe when he is two steps from the bag. Note that a lot of the players and referees in soccer are from third world countries are desperately poor and a lot of college atheletes are broke each and every week. I'm sure their is shady shit going on in college football, but unless you have the QB in your pocket it wouldn't be worth it. I guess the moral of the story is avoid games with big and unpredictable line moves. Gamblers that go large enough to move the lines are sharps with inside information more ofter than millionares throwing away their money.

I think one needs to watch every play of every Warrior game , along with an analyses of the betting action on every game , to see wether it merits further investigation. Until that happens , it's all speculation.

Yep.  Everyone is saying how can a QB be throwing games when he only threw 5 INTs on the season?  Like INTs are the only way to shave points.
