Johnson deserves the sports world's respect

Jimmie Johnson will officially pick up his fourth straight NASCAR Cup title when the Sprint Cup series comes to a close at Homestead Sunday.

Winning consecutive championships is hard enough, but winning four in a row is an amazing feat.

So why isn’t anyone making a fuss over Johnson’s reign?

NASCAR, despite breaking into the mainstream in the past 15 years, is still considered a secondary sport when compared to football, baseball and basketball – especially with sports bettors. But we haven’t seen anything close to Johnson’s consistent excellence in any of those sports.

The only other active athletes that compare to the No. 48 in terms of winning in their respective sports are names like Tiger Woods, Roger Federer and Michael Phelps – household names that will go down in history among the greatest athletes ever.

A lot of people discount Johnson – and all motor sports - because they think the car does all the work. Those doubters have never been to a NASCAR race or held onto the steering wheel of a vehicle going upwards of 200 miles per hour. And if they have, they've never been just inches from other cars in front, to the sides and in the rear.

As the New Year gets closer and we wave goodbye to the aughts, there will be plenty of Top 10 lists for the decade being compiled. And if Johnson's name isn’t among the Top 5 Best Athletes of the Last 10 Years, it’s a crime.

This is so true!!!  Jimmy Johnson does not get the respect that he deserves.

Four and more for the 48

Motor Sports do get credit...but mainly in the form of F1 racing. You know, LeMans and stuff like that. F1 cars even turn left AND right! The reason Nascar doesn't get the respect and attention that Football and Basketball and such get is simple: narrow audience and even more narrow minded sponsors. This is not an opinion, but fact. Forget the illegal roots of Nascar for a moment. The sponsors have repeatedly made it known (not ALL of them) how they feel about a more diverse competition. They seem afraid that someone (of any ethnic background) will crack the sport open just like Tiger Woods did Golf. Please don't believe me, rather do your own homework on the topic and form your own opinion. Oh well. Good job Jimmy Johnson - 4 in a row is still quite an accomplishment, considering the competition. But can you really compare that to a man that dominated a sport mainly while playing injured?

He sure does but unlike Tiger his popularity is not there because of his robotic personality.

Sure its got an audience, and it seems to have good coverage and be well promoted

but I think a lot of people find the 'sport' pretty boring, I mean all they're doing is driving round and round for hours, sure its at high speed but so what, who can't do that I'm pretty sure a lot of the fans are just hoping to see a crash anyway. Just my opinion as to why nascar isnt in the same league as other sports, and why johnsons achievement isnt up there.

Couldn't agree more with what you have said. I have been a HUGE Jimmie fan for years and hopefully after today's race this driver and team will be recognized as one of the best ever assembled.
