NBA - FIRST HALF DISCUSSION THREAD - TUESDAY

Friends: As most of you know by now MrOPC has been sent to the penalty box and via his post there has informed us he has no intention of returning to Covers. It is my sincere hope both Covers management and MrOPC will reconsider. I did not view all the posts involved but there did seem to be enough evidence that time in the penalty box was warranted and justifiable. OK. So be it.

This year's political race has been one of the most passionate and divisive ever. The issues are compelling and most folks believe we can not afford to be wrong. In the heat of debate things sometimes degenerate and at some point in our lives all of us have been in the position of having said things we probably should not have and probably wouldn't had we simply put our words together and then reviewed them 24 hours later, when the heat and passion of the moment have passed.

Today is Election Day and the winners will cheer, but hopefully they will remember that their period of power may be as short as two years, when a new congress will be elected and could be of a different mindset of the one that gets elected today. Whether or not your chosen side succeeds today could become irrelevant just that quickly, without the dire results so many fear if the "right" (mine) side doesn't control Washington, D.C.

Personally, I fear neither candidate as much as one party winning it all and telling us they now have a "mandate" from the people to do as they have proposed. I fear they don't understand how often the main street citizen is simply voting for what they see as the lesser of two evils, most folk's view of politicians being on a level with snake oil salesmen.

So, please, let's apologize to those we have offended, forgive those that offended us, and move on with the purposes we have established and the very reasons all of us are in this forum. Let's share what led us to communicate with each other in the first place and let bygones be bygones. MrOPC, please do as necessary and return to the community you founded. Time will heal the wounds, but it is already time to move on.

key- you hit the nail on the head with the "lessor of two evils". personnally I don't think whoever wins will be there in two years- McCain will die of old age and Obama will be impeached. LOL. Joke guys-

thanks for opening the thread again- OPC, don't let it get You down enough to not come back. I really like your thots and analysis-

Spurs 1stQ looks to be the best bet tonight at -1.

Their out to get their 1st win against a Dallas team that isn't what they once were. Look for the Spurs to be up 5 at the end of the 1st 23-18

I guess I am ready to pull the trigger and let it rip. Surprising on a short card that I would like some aspect of all three games tonight, but by God it is what it is.

1st Half (yes, all three picks)

Suns-Nets UNDER 102.5

It may not be apparent yet but the Suns are buying into Terry Porter’s defensive ideas and schemes. The Nets can be one of the easiest teams to stop and if that happens the Suns will also let up a little and rotate more players than D’Antoni ever did.

Rockets –1.5

I have played on and won with the Rockets already this year (+pts at Dallas) and I think I am right about their being a real top-level contender this year. Nothing against the Celtics, but they have some questionable numbers in my personal power ratings and have not yet looked good on the road.

Spurs –1.5

Last night’s win with the Cavs just convinces me more that the Mavs are declining and are very vulnerable. The Spurs may also be declining due to age and certainly the absence of Ginobili doesn’t help, but I don’t expect them to fall as far, or as fast, as the Mavs.

Assuming MrOPC is going to be checking in on us today I will issue a challenge. I expect to go 3-0 with these picks and if so, you will please bury the hatchet with Covers management and your adversaries and get your fat ass back in here where you belong. ‘Nuff said. GL2ALL

Thanks Key for putting up this thread. I am sorry to hear about Mr O. leaving, but I sure hope that he will reconsider and rejoin our little group here. I've been real busy with CFB this season so far (and doing real well), but I always checking in to this thread as I feel this is a real close knit group of cappers that really supports each others w/o hate nor bashing. Ok, on to the game tonite,

Tail you on Sun-Nets under 102 (it dropped to 102 on my book)

Take HOU 1Q -.5 and 1H -1 (again dropped to -1 on my book) (Also, thinking hard about the whole game as well)

Don't feel comfortable with Spurs 1H -1.5, since they have a tendency to start out slow, but I will definitely on them in the 2H, if they are tied or fall behind in the 1H. On the other hand it is a B2B for Dallas, therefore Spurs may have the advantage here. Uhm, uhm...still thinking hard on this.

That is all for me as well. Mr. O, where are you? at least come back and says hello...I promised that I will share my CFB picks with you if you come back.,,,(but take it at your own risk)

Keys, thanks again for keeping up this thread. GLTA

You have beat me to the punch as i am a big fan of the spurs tonight.  There are really a few issues that plague the Mavs right now.  Some of the obvious ones are:

1. Age

2. Coaching - The biggest mistake they made was firing Avery.  His mentor, who will be a future hall of famer, believe in this guy.  He knew what he was doing and was able to get the best talent out of his players.  I know the guys didn't like playing for him but look at the guys that are on the team.  They are a bunch of hot heads who one didn't want to get traded, two get into trouble with smoking weed, three have no respect for authority.

Until they get there act together, the Mavs will be lucky to go .500 for the season.

Rockets is a team i can't take because its going against my boys.  Boston fan here in every sport possible.  I do however like the under in this game as it will be a long hard fight.  Everyone is going home tonight with a lot of bruises and scars.

My one other game for today is Suns over.  This suns team needs to establish themselves offensively.  I understand what you say key that Porter is trying to pound into them his defensive scheme, but if it works it plays into there bread and butter of a run and gun fast break offense.  Besides Amare is to good of a player to not get the ball.  Everytime he gets it he is going to the basket, picking up fouls and making dunks.  "Hey Nash go back to what works, pick and roll."  There will be 70 points by phoenix at half time, and key you know they have the team to do it.  I guess we are boxing here on this one

Keyelement has one of the best plays on the 1st half card in the Under in the Phoenix New Jersey game.

NJ and GS first half bearly crept over this total. Phoenix will slow it down and use a nice half court game to utilize Shaqs size in this game. I love the under first half in this game.

Went 1-2 yesterday with two games that seemed like the Clips didnt want to play, and Dallas had a bad night on top of solid defense from CLE.

I also like the UNDER in PHX. I have been looking at this game and am trying to find a reason to take the Over. PHX is obviously playing at a slower pace than last season. But who could really play at the pace anyways? The kicker in this is Nj going to be able to knock down shots. The paint should be owned by PHX with Shaq and AS. I think the Suns will score and will play some defense  (who would have thought).

I came on this thread to post this as my play only to see that I in good company with KEY on the same side. BOL

Will also make PHX -3.5 a play for the half.

Have to say that Total in Boston-Houston is a bit low, neither team is going to run up and down the court, but they both shoot well, and in the FH they will try to get it going on offense,so over FH for me.
JEG53 says:
11/04/08 08:39PM
its 88 by the way.

Also got Dallas+5 for full game, without Manu SA is missing a big player for them.

Hows everyone doing?

Key thanks for keeping it going.

It sure looks over backdooor wins unless they start missing,Suns were 10 of 16 in F-1/4.
