Brett, The Beatles, and the $20 Million Bribe

Say you don't need no diamond ring and I'll be satisfied
Tell me that you want the kind of thing that money just can't buy
I don't care too much for money, money can't buy me love
Can't buy me love, love
Can't buy me love

In arguably one of the most recognized Beatles songs, the narrator pleads with a love interest to forget about money and material items, for money can't purchase the happiness of true love.

WTMJ television in Milwaukee has reported that the Packers offered Brett Favre $20 million dollars over several years to stay retired from the National Football League.

The deal is as absurd as if Donald Trump were offered millions to retire from real estate...or Jack Nicholson from acting.

Beyond his wife and family, Brett Favre loves the game of football.  And he loves football like an innocent child in the sandlot, not like a seasoned NFL player obsessed with making a competitive salary.  Imagine being a fly on the wall at the Favre residence when Packers team president Mark Murphy offered up the 20 million dollar "bribe":

Mark: We understand that you would like to be released from the team.  We also understand that you do not appear receptive to trade offers to either the New York Jets or Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  But Brett, everyone has a price.  We understand that your family...and your relatives...and your children's children...and even the third cousins of your children's children are completely cash solid until death -- especially given the marketing and media dollars you will gain over the next ten years or more.  However, we would like to give you 20 million dollars in several installments, provided that you agree to never play NFL football again.  So, what do you say?

Brett: Mark, take the money and shove it up your !*#!  But be careful.  Too many bills shoved into your rectum at one time may cause hemorrhaging.  Have a nice day, nimrod.  I'm going fishing.

The latest news has the Packers actually considering trading Favre to NFC North competitors Chicago or Minnesota.  Sources say that Favre has wanted to quarterback the Vikings since the beginning of this drama.  Truth is always stranger than fiction.  Minnesota visits Green Bay on Monday, September 8, for the inaugural Monday Night Football matchup.

Whether Brett winds up in Minnesota, Chicago, Tampa Bay, or New York, I applaud him for refusing the 20 million to walk away from football.

Too many people in this day and age sacrifice love for money.  And although I imagine Brett tolerates a Beatles song now and then, I bet he is a fan of the rougher, edgier Rolling Stones.

i agree that we value money way too much in this culture......or lack their of. i have no problem with him continuing his career but all the $ talk is disgusting to me personally. as a counter culture type and starving guitarist i am sick of having figures shoved in my face every 2 seconds...not to mention the sight of oversized caddy escallades and 88 lb woman driving them to the death of our planet.... something has to GIVE.
