The BS Behind the Burress Story

If Plaxico Burress were an ordinary white guy named Paul from, let us say, Brooklyn, and he packs heat to protect a few gold chains...and then accidentally shoots himself in the leg...I would bet $1000.00 that he would NOT be sentenced two years in prison.

Why I am I so confident about this wager?

1) Assuming Paul is not incredibly wealthy or famous, the New York judicial system has no reason or precedent to seek the maximum penalty.

2) Media/Political Exposure: Because our imaginary Paul is like hundreds or thousands of New Yorkers that have violated the very same law Plaxico Burress did, he is nothing more than an ant on the sidewalk.

I am not trying to excuse what Plaxico did as trite or inconsequential. However, you can not argue that ordinary people, black, white, yellow, etc., etc., would recieve the same sentence as Plaxico.

I agree somewhat, I dint think its so much his race as it is his celebrity. This is a charge that most people get around 8 months for.

The charges Burress was indicted on carry a MANDATORY minimum sentence of 3.5 years in prison. So if Paul from Brooklyn got charged and this went to trial, then if convicted the sentence would have been the same.

The REAL crime though is he went clubbing in sweat pants. For that he deserves the time :)

As a Giants fan I am angry at Plaxico Burress for being so foolish. I think the sentence was very strict and extreme. I think he deserves to be punished but this seems to be a very big price to pay for doing something stupid. I definately think the judicial system is making an example of Plaxico. The question is will other professional athletes stop acting stupid after this and the Vick fiasco?

So let me get this straight. Handguns in clubs (especially NY) = BAD ... Handguns and AR-15's (semi auto assault riffle) at public political rallies = FINE. hmmmm something seems off.

There is no BS involved. He initially turned down 2-3 months because he did want to spend ANY time in jail. He turned the initial offer down and got what he deserved because he thought like all other athletes/celebrities, he would get off with nothing.

He got the ol' screw job by a politically hungry D.A. that had huge hard-on for him in hopes to get his name out in the public.

All he did was make the American judicial system appear even more unfair and contrived.

If Plastic Co. was another black NFL player let us say Warrick Dunn I bet he would not receive a 2 year sentence which Plax wont have to serve the full term. Occasionally an accumulation of bone head moves catch up with ya. Was a message sent? Yes. Will this make a handful of guys think twice before taking their cannons to the club? Yes. Could it possibly save a couple lives along the way? Maybe, so if some cat has do go do a little bit a time possibly save an innocent bystanders life then I guess we'll have to chalk it up to be being worth it. Wasn't this guy in an accident and didn't even have vehicle insurance on his ride?? I mean c'mon now I know money cant buy ya love, or sense obviously, and there have been numerous times it bought ppl in Plaxico's situation outta the slammer. A cop didn't even know who Bob Dylan was walking around in the ghetto of NY - I guess the times they are a changin'. Man, no car insurance and this dude makes more cabbage on 2 paychecks than most of u guys will see all year or maybe even in a lifetime, yea go on to jail for a little bit and get ya head straight.

He was dumb enough to turn down 2-3 months in prison because he didn't want to do any time at all...

He deserves everything he got for his arrogance, and this is coming from a Giants fan...

Disagree on this one. And I am not being ignorant or living in the clouds. NYC has adopted the toughest laws in the country(and needed to) There are mandatory sentances for being an idiot and even possessing a gun that is unregistered(illegal) I am from NYC, it is night and day from how it was 10 years ago. The city is cleaned up because of the tough laws. He can not feel he is above the law. This is a no warning crime. This was not because he was famous. If you notice the prosecuter has made only one statement throughout the whole trial. Sorry he made a big mistake, and I believe any of us would be going to jail for the same amount of time if we did the same thing.

PS dont compare it to Stallworth or Vick. Different laws

So you can kill a guy drunk driving and get a month, but if you accidentally shoot yourself you get 2 years? somethings off here.
tuna288 says:

There is absolutly something wrong with that. Killing someone while driving drunk is just as bad and whoever made his sentencing for one month is more stupid than Burress. He was carrying a gun in the waistband of track pants in a crowded club. The discharged round could have easily struck a random person, wounding or even killing them. Two years? Not enough.

Gun laws in New York are very strict. Laws and sentencing vary from state to state. Ever hear of "states rights?"

Saying this is a race issue is pathetic and ignorant.

Do your homework before you make such irresponsible statements

he hurt no one except himself typical judicial bullsh-- it is never about right and wrong anymore its about lawyers and winning. when is a real judge anywhere going to step up and be a real judge with a real brain and do the right thing for the people. guns and drugs (aka lynch) doesn't get squat run someone over (stallworth) its ok shoot yourself al be it saftey should have been on (only he got hurt) go to jail. unbelievable
Diamondjake says:

People saying this is a race issue are wrong. As Henry stated above NY law is hardcore on brining a concealed gun into a public place. Argue the law being to srtict and lobby for change if you want...but dont act like Plex got screwed. He is a FKN idiot that could have killed himself or someone else.....If you live in NY you better not bring a gun in a bar or you are going to prison....this is nothing new. Niether arer all the stupid comments in this thread.

I agree that race isn't the issue here ... it's New York's notoriously strict gun laws. A white guy named Paul would face the same consequences ... Burress is serving the minimum sentence under the deal.

Burress' celebrity status probably worked against him in that the public at-large would cry foul if he walked. But I believe hte punishment does not fit the crime. A couple of years' probation and some community service about gun safety would have been enough in my view.

The fact that Stallworth and Lenoard Little killed people while driving drunk and together served less than year, while Burress gets 2 years for shooting himself in the leg, does seem like a miscarriage of justice.

Plaxico Burress is a numbskull and if the idiot would of learned some "Gun Control" like an

adult, he would had a holster and the safety on. I believe in our right to "Bear Arms." and in

Burress's case, he exercised the right the wrong way. Plus he wore sweat pants!! lol
