Chargers, Vikings, Jaguars and Browns all looking for first win
as odds makers try to make sense of early season upsets
LONDON (September 19, 2008) – It’s hard to imagine a game in week three of the football calendar being a must win for a team. It’s even harder to imagine that being the case for four teams. That’s where the Vikings, Chargers, Jaguars and Browns find themselves heading into the weekend. All were predicted by many to make the playoffs and some were predicted my more than a few to play in the Super Bowl. But, despite their early season woes, Logans.com is still giving most of them the benefit of the doubt.
Minnesota, a trendy dark horse pick to win the NFC this year, is already turning to an ageing veteran with diminishing skills in Gus Frerotte to replace the ineffective Tarvaris Jackson at quarterback after two losses to start the season. While the losses were against strong teams (Green Bay and Indianapolis), a third loss would all but dash any hopes of glory in January and February. The schedule does not get easier as the Vikings welcome the undefeated Carolina Panthers to town. Logans.com has Minnesota favored by 3.5 points.
Meanwhile, in the AFC, the team most thought would provide the stiffest challenge to New England’s dominance, the San Diego Chargers, are also staring down a potential 0-3 start to the season when they play host to Brett Favre and the New York Jets. The spread in this one is a big 9 points for San Diego, which Favre may take as a personal insult, especially playing under the lights on Monday Night Football, when he’s produced some of his greatest moments.
The tastiest looking game on the schedule for this week though is the Sunday night battle at Lambeau, between the undefeated Cowboys and Packers. These two teams finished first and second in the conference last season and are hoping to carry that momentum through this season as well. Dallas is a favored by a field goal and is probably thankful this game is being played in September and not December. Logans.com is also offering numerous props on this game, and others, including completions by Tony Romo and Aaron Rodgers, receptions by Terrell Owens, margin of victory, team to score first and just about anything you can think of.
Other key games this week include the Jaguars trying to get their first win of the year, which will be tough on the road to Indianapolis, where the Colts are a solid 5.5 point pick, and the battle of Pennsylvania, where the Eagles try to recover from their late game collapse against Dallas last week when they face the unbeaten Steelers. Philadelphia is a 3 point favorite.
