7-3 on the main picks thread.

2-2 on totals.

7-4 on the Goofy Games, including a nice call on Jacksonville State.

This week:

Frankly, I don't like this card much.  I had a bad Week Two last year, so maybe it's not in the cards.  Anyway, I like:

Mississippi -20 at Tulane - Ole Miss actually looked pretty good for much of the Jax State game, and that loss isn't as bad as it seems.  I think the Cocks (light) will be pretty formidable this year.  Gotta love that freshman QB.  Tulane is a train-wreck, as the impact of Katrina is really being felt now.  They might have 20 legit D-1 players, and they catch the Rebs at a bad time.  Rebs fans, always in the mood for a party, might well outnumber the alleged Wave fans.  This has disaster written all over it.  45-10.

Houston -20 vs. Texas-El Paso - I'm not sure the Cougs are going to punt in convference until November. 51-20.

Southern California -19.5 vs. Virginia - Hoos looked "good" against Richmond, but the Spiders aren't nearly as good as they've been in the recent past.  UVa's offense doesn't do the sorts of things the Rainbows do, so I don't think Virginia gets north of about 13 against a Trojan defense that will be looking to make a statement in front of the beautiful people in the Coliseum. 41-10.

Eastern Michigan +17 (hook) at Miami University - Florida looked so bad last week, I kept waiting for Ashton Kutchar to show up and tell us we'd all been punked. I'm just going to discount that game.  Recall, Tulane looked great at Bama a few years back, and hasn't played a decent game since. Unless Miami got astoundingly better over the off-season, they should still struggle.  I would think Eastern has a puncher's chance outright here.

Alabama -12 vs. Pennsylvania State - I don't think the Lions are very good.  I'm pretty sure the Tide is.

Florida International +17.5 vs. Rutgers - FIU is offering a "buy one, get four free" ticket promotion for this game, so there could be as many as 500 people there.  Golden Panthers played RU close on the road last year.

Texas Tech -24.5 at New Mexico - can't believe that Tommy was too happy with they way his team finished the game last week against the Ponies.  New Mexico is paying the karma price for running off the only decent coach it has had in recent memory.  42-6.

UCLA +6 vs. Stanford - Bruins seem to play everyone close at home.  Loss in the Little Apple was expected, and not that big a deal.  Their season starts now.

Duke/Wake over 50.5 - Devils lit up a decent (ish) Elon defense last week, with a "better than it looks" rout of the Phoenix.  They also gave up a lot of yards.  Should be festive.

Idaho/Nebraska OVER 53.5 - Huskers might get 54, and the Vandals should get their punches in here and there.

Might come back with some goofy games later.

Bama, Miss, FIU

usc line is wacky again, just like last week it seems as though if they really wanted 50/50 action it would have come out around 24.

as far as Houston not punting, their opponent may not either, their "d" is suppose to better this year, but seeing will be believing.

good luck this week

Good start and good luck with your games this week.

I like Eastern Michigan the line is already down to 14. Your analysis is correct on Nebraska. They might push the total over alone

44,  Sure enough.  I had not noticed that movement.   I played several of these games at earlier, different lines, and try to make sure I'm current when I post.  I simply read right through that. Thanks.

With you on Mississippi, USC & Houston.

UCLA looks good, thanks for the heads up

Nos, Kal, Ron,

Ron, I agree with you on the USC number, which is why I haven't gone deeper than I have.  I'm hoping the line is a reflaction of how "bad" USC looked on national tv, and how relatively good UVa looked against a depleted UR squad.

Houston D did a good job against a decent TSU squad last week.

Some of these lines are moving, so here's a couple of goofy games:

Villanova -13 at Lehigh - simply a class mismatch; Nova is seriously good.  Lehigh will play hard, but it shouldn't matter.

New Hampshire +24 at Pitt - Pitt has a nice history of taking care of games like this, but UNH is pretty darn good.

McNeese +41 at Missouri - Wow.  Didn't see this line coming. McNeese has bee pretty good forever.  They pretty much always score.  Is MU going to get 60?  Maybe.

MaineRoad says:
09/10/10 02:01PM

Hampton -7 at Howard - Howard is garbage.

UMass -11 vs. Holy Cross - Crusaders figure to be a little down this year.  UMass off nice come-from-behind upset of William & Mary.  CAA is a lot better than the Patriot, generally.

Houston is tough because Utep always plays them tight but they are looking good to score alot of points tonight, Utep has some injury issues so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that someone can't play and that Houston gets revenge

I don't like Alabama laying double digits, I think they are the best team in the country but this game looks like an old fashioned defensive slugfest and to ask Bama to win by more than 12 is asking alot in my opinion, I was thinking more like 20-16 for a final, once again though, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you

should be a winning card

For those of you who enjoy the goofy games, I noticed last week that there was considerable late line movement on some of the games.  In general, the moves were in the right direction, in terms of pointing to the winner.

Nova, after ticking up to 13, came back down to 12.  Just not sure how LU competes here, but they tend to be a scrappy bunch.  Pitt's up to 25.5.  Wanny's pound the ball offense tends to do well against teams they physically overmatch.

Now for the First State Round-up:

Delaware State stinks and is home as a small dog to FAMU.  Rattlers might stink too, though.  Not too sure what Delaware's got this year, but they're at home -2 against the higher-ranked Jackrabbits (I tihnk that's right) of SDSU.  Hens generally do well against teams who haven't seen them before.  Not sure that's as true today as when Tubby was still coaching, but they don't lose often to non-CAA or SOCON 1-AA teams.

MaineRoad says:
09/10/10 06:26PM

I don't disagree with any of that.  PSU is notoriously hard to beat badly.  However, I thought, coming into the season, they might be a 7-5 team.  I didn't see anything out of them last week to lead me to believe that's not the case.  YSU isn't good.  Still, it's always hard to know what to make of those easrly season scrimmages. 27-10?

UTEP does seem to play UH tough, but I'm going to drink the kool-aid and think the Cougar defense has a pulse this year.  I'm not sure UTEP's worlds better than Texas State, and Houston went through them like they weren't on the fiield.  It was 68-7 at one point, and TSU's not awful.

Wierd day tomorrow, as most of the stuff I really like goes late.  Ole Miss and USC should cover by 40 or so.

Stay hot, brother.

MaineRoad,

I love seeing the UNH love. Just graduated there in 2008. I think we can throw on Pitt if Toman gets the ball out quickly. We will go with 3 and 4 WR sets and our TE Chris Jeannot is a beast. UNH struggles stopping the run and protecting the QB but I bet we hang around for a half. UNH wont be afraid as they have beaten the last 6 D1 teams they played. Pitt's QB also looked very shaky last week. I think thats a decent play and that we stay within the number.

Cats hanging around early.  Hens rolling the Rabbits in Newark.  Wake and Duke might get to 100.

You are right they are the Jackrabbits of South Dakota St.GL...I took the rabbits...
