Week Five - "The Quest for the Black Star"

A year ago, I was, to quote Mr. Happy Kane, a "five star general" around these parts.  Of course, those stars were all red.  This year, not so much, as the inexorable march toward five-black ignominy continues.

The hail mary touchdown in the AFA/SDSU game almost made me consider gambling and drinking less.  I fought those urges, though, and return for more back-door pain.

Anyway, 3-6 last week brings it to 14-17-1 on this crappy year.

This week:

Arkansas +1 vs. Texas A&M - handicapping is relatively easy when all you have to do is pick the better team getting points.

Ohio +3 (hook) at Bowling Green - see above, although this one is one the road, or as "on the road" as it gets playing in that pasture BGSU calls home.

Florida Atlantic -3 vs. Wyoming - Cowboys are worse on the road than Robert E. Lee; nice 7,000 foot drop to sea level won't help; who in the hell scheduled this game?

Washington +14 (hook) at Notre Dame - Irish are missing more weapons than the Republican Guard; I heart Jake Locker.

Northwestern +7.5 at Purdue - so you go from a prime-time, nationally televised heartbreaker in a packed stadium against your most hated rival to a noon kick against the Mildcats in front of 25,000 empty seats; let's just say I'm not sure the Boilers come out firing all the pistons.

California +5 vs. Southern California - Trojans will have the same problems they had in Seattle, only this time against a better team; Bears didn't play last week, so they should be well rested; if Riley doesn't piss the game away, Bears should send the Angelinos home with their second Pac-9 loss.

Tulsa -16 at Rice - I played this at -14, and was a little surprised they didn't just credit my account when I hit "confirm wager;" Rice couldn't stop Vanderbilt, whose offense is pretty much stopped in perpetuity.

Buffalo +8 vs. Central Michigan -  I played this at +10, and it must have struck me as a good idea at the time.

Southern Methodist +28 at Texas Christian - I spin a lot potential scores in my head for this one, and very few of them involve the Frogs winning by 29; any one of 1,467 female students at this game would be the hottest girl at Buffalo or Bowling Green.

Syracuse +7 (hook) vs. South Florida - most Syracuse students' granparents live in South Florida, so the visiting Bulls won't seem so threatening.

Auburn +3 (hook) at Tennessee - what's not to love about Auburn? Tigers defense doesn't always pay attention, but I'm not sure that matters against the UT offense.

Memphis +7 at Central Florida - I still have a few pennies that Memphis hasn't flushed down the toilet yet; Tigers are due for a good performance, and an on-campus shooting.

Other Games of Interest:

Louisville +6.5 vs. Pittsburgh - the inaugural Who's the Worst Coach in College Football? Bowl

Colorado State -3.5 at Idaho - at the 3-1, the Fighting Tater Tots should have the Kibbie Dome rocking.

Kansas State +3 vs. Iowa State - eek; at least they'll be heavy drinking in the Arrowhead parking lot.

EMU +6 vs. Temple - Homecoming at Ypsilanti always has special meaning for the many EMU alums recently released from halfways houses and rehab programs.

That's clearly my hope, and I really am due to catch a break or two.  I don't think I've had a bogus cash all season, but had a bunch of tough beats.

Nos - same to you, brother.    I actually like a lot of the big favs you have, but my card was pretty big as it was, and it's not like there aren't 40 Cincy!!!!!!!!!!!!! threads already.  MU might get 20, which will certainly leave Cincy some work to do, but I think 48-13 is more like it.

Some funny stuff....not too many purty ladies in the NE, especially when they are constantly under six layers of clothes!

That is a big IF on Riley....BOL!

LOL......my 5 red ones were taken away at the beginning of the cfb season..........guess LY was LY. I'm now in search of anything red.......even a half. Neve underestimate the power of the dark side.

Tis should be interesting..........I have some the same as you but am against you on others...........one of us will slip deeper into the Emporers grasp than the other..........

GL, have a good flight, & enjoy the game...........we'll see what you look like in HD.

Buffalo did everything but set fire to its bench last week en route to one of the most misleading final scores in ages.  That said, they earned their fate, sucking on pretty much every side of the ball.  This is still a team that put up 500 yards on Pitt, is well coached, and is home catching considerable points against a team that has historically struggled in that role in conference.  This CMU team might actually be as good as some previous Chip teams were perceived to be, but weren't.  We'll probably find out this weekend.

Thanks to the rest of you for the kind words.    Although I do try and make money on this stuff, I try and remember that it's supposed to be fun, at least for most of us.

For some of you newer guys, the folks who were nice enough to respond in this thread are among best of the Covers nation.   There used to be a lot more like them around.

Maine,

I know it's got nothing to do with your actual pick, but U of South Florida actually is nowhere South Florida. It's in Tampa, about a 5 hour drive north of West Palm Beach, Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale

Still like the pick though
MaineRoad says:
09/30/09 05:51PM

I was thinking of you this week, as this is the "anniversary" game of the pick that brought you to my attention.  I was leaning Miss. State last year at Ga Tech, and you wrote "Tech will destroy the fighting cowbells."  That's all you said, and it was true from the opening kickoff.  I was intrigued to see you're not, apparently, on that game either way this week.  I like Tech, but slept on the number.

MaineRoad says:

True enough.  I actually stay out on Dale Mabry a fair amount on business, so I'm intimately familiar with Tampa and its environs.  Actually, re-reading my eloquent prose, I note that I never really said that USF was IN south Florida.  Ah,whatever, it can't all be gold.

tblackk24 says:

MattBiz , I live in Tampa and actually right off Dale Mabry. Tampa is South West Florida and is only a 3 hour trip to the other coast to get to West Palm ,Fl Laudy , and Mia.  All the same it was great to go up to Tally and watch USF beat that ass!!

Just look how Wahoos has been treated  this week.    That guy has made me more money than anyone ever, but the haters and bashers can't leave anything alone.  Even some of "my" guys who still post, don't post very much.  There's an interesting psychological study here somewhere.
BustinPiles says:

Isn't it ironic that red stars are winners and black stars ar losers...seems like it should be reversed.

Get out of the red and into the black (just a deep thought with Jack Handey)

Good luck this week

mmac66 says:

Iowa State probably shouldn't be laying pts to any team in the Big 12......Colorado and K-State included.

GL this weekend Maine! I hope you have a hell of a week. I enjoy the shit out of your write-ups

"The hail mary touchdown in the AFA/SDSU game almost made me

consider gambling and drinking less.  I fought those urges, though, and

That was one of the most brutal beats in history.  Surprised I wasn't on it.

In a season where every bounce has gone the wrong way, I finally got one back last night with my favorite QB Cody Hawkins.  What a gamer.

I'd tell you I like your card but that would (and should) scare you.

Maine-

On my BB so can't quote text (or I would- duh) but yes that was pretty much my GOY but since I don't do GOYs, I just shot my mouth about the blowout I saw coming. Nice memory.

Ty's is a tough psychological spot for both... The FCBs should have won LW, no doubt v. LSU... Searching for an identity and that would have been huge. Will they be flat? Dunno. GT will come in, most likely, very confident, despite PJ's best efforts to remind them they're not playing Savannah St... Msu has seen it before; Buzz will prob play close to the vest believing that, much like LY, they will pop some big ones eventually. (That game was tight for a quarter and turned on Bully's failure to convert that huge 80 yd run into pts). Think they volley for awhile and it stays Under 46.5... GL on ur plays!

Faber_Guy says:
10/02/09 02:01PM

u would think but they're a mess.  can't run the ball.  ribrock D has had some injuries and now has some leaks.  poor push on both sides of the ball.  i think that line is begging u to take 'em.  prob will be on maine or simply pass.  i'll prob put up some AA later.  gl2day.

You guys can only control your own picks. What everyone else does is out of your control. You guys are doing just fine. Keep at it.

Why the love for Kansas State?  I like the play too but was just curious what your guys' rationale was.
