NCAA Future Looks - the Sleepers

We have reached the point where it is a downhill drive to the start of football season. The hazy days of summer consist of MLB, WNBA and CFL. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to football.

Because of the late Labor Day holiday this year, we won’t be having any August college football. As much as I want the season to get here, I think it is a good thing as to be perfectly honest, football should not start until September. That’s just the way it is.

We are 43 days from the season opening kickoff between Presbyterian and Wake Forest (NL sorry folks) and that means it is time to look at some futures. Precisely, BCS Championship futures. Five teams, Oklahoma, Alabama, Ohio St., Florida and Boise St., all have odds in the single digits showing not much value. Let’s get the season started with some possible National Championship sleepers.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (+1200)

Nebraska may not be considered a real sleeper as there is a lot of buzz surrounding the Huskers this season. However, with Oklahoma being the Big XII favorite, Nebraska can fall into this category. What better way for Nebraska to exit the Big XII, a conference it never wanted to be a part of anyway, with a conference title and a National Championship?

The Huskers bring back 17 starters including 10 on offense and that is important since the offense was not a strong unit last season. Replacing Ndamukong Suh is impossible but the defense, which has improved by 28 ppg and 205 ypg over two years, proves the Blackshirts are back.

The schedule sets up great for the Huskers as they have seven home games, including both Texas and Missouri, and they miss Oklahoma altogether. They could face the Sooners in the Big XII Championship to earn a spot in the Glendale, AZ fro the BCS Championship.

Miami, Florida Hurricanes (+2000)

We cannot quite say that the Hurricanes are back to their old form from the previous three decades but they are on their way. They have improved from 5-7 to 7-6 to 9-4 over the last three years and head coach Randy Shannon, who was rewarded with a four-year contract extension, has this team believing once again.

Offensively, quarterback Jacory Harris is the real deal and a new West Coast offense could have him in the Heisman Trophy discussions. Miami also got Seantrel Henderson, the top offensive linemen recruit in the nation, after he was released of his letter of intent at UCS following the sanctions there. Defensively, Miami returns 10 starters to a unit that made huge strides in the second half of the season.

The big drawback for the Hurricanes is their schedule early in the season as they have three straight road games at Ohio St., Pittsburgh and Clemson. Should they pull an upset or two and it means a home showdown with Virginia Tech in the second to last week of the season is the biggest remaining roadblock.

Arkansas Razorbacks (+4000)

Picking a team in the SEC to win the National Championship other than Alabama or Florida may seem like tossing money away but there is some real value here. The Razorbacks burst back onto the scene last year with an 8-5 record and plenty of room for more improvement this season. Head coach bobby Petrino knows what he’s doing and he knows he has a special team in 2010.

The best news took place in the offseason when quarterback Ryan Mallet decided to stay in school for his senior season. He will lead an offense that averaged 36 ppg and 427.3 ypg last season, ninth and 20th respectively in the nation last season. The defense will see big improvements and we saw some of those down the stretch last year. In total, 60 letterwinners are back.

No SEC schedule is easy no matter how you look at it but the Razorbacks got a great draw. The non-conference schedule is tame and in conference action, they get both Alabama and LSU at home while avoiding Florida. Arkansas has only four true road games this season. Everything is in place for a major run.

Neb needs an offense before I'd lay a dime on them to win the NT, let alone the Big 12...

100th in the nation isn't going to cut it...

Nebraska at 12-1 ????

sorry I have to strongly disagree Brother

I dont think 12-1 is that much of a stretch....Although I would agree that 11-2, is much more likely.

Think he's talking about 12/1 odds of winning NT..  not final record

DoubleUp4Life says:

I meant the Odds 12-1....

Right now I think Nebraska is the most overrated team in the country

Like you Miami lean.... but I would want far better odds than 20-1.....

I would Just bet the Canes to win the ACC at 7-2 or better instead of 20-1 for the NC

THEMUGG says:

Miami has no shot.............& I'd want a helluva lot more than 12/1 to even consider Nebraska
BBallday10 says:

Wrote this in my preview but not sure why all the love for Canes...

D gave up: 34 to FSU, 31 to VT, 40 to Clemson and 33 to UNC.

Tough Schedule: @OSU, @Pitt, @Clemson,

FSU all in their first five games

Best W LY outside of GT (home Thurs ESPN game) was 7-6 FSU or injury plagued Oklahoma

Maybe I'm missing something...

DoubleUp4Life says:

schedule is Brutal....

No team in the ACC has a shot IMNHO....

Schedules and ACC play has everyone losing 3+

these should probably be the true odds just to get into the title game which would take a minor miracle, problem is then they actually have to win it...so any of the three would have to go undefeated in regular season (except Ark possibly), then each has a conference champ game (where Neb has to beat either Texas for 2nd time in 2 mos or OU), and then win likely as heavy dog in the BCS title (could be 3-1 or 5-1 just in that game unless Boise or TCU sneaks in)

I've been following you guys for a couple years now. I have tons of respect for what you say.

Eddie - No way Nebraska wins 11 or 12 games this year. I do think they beat Texas at home, but then I see them losing the following week at Okie State in what will be a huge let down game. I also see them losing to Washington and Texas A@M.

I would think that an expert can find the better odds.

5dimes

Neb 19-1
Mia- 24-1
Ark 45-1

Double- Asking Vt to go 10-2 is not that much IMO, and if Matt is playing Mia @ 20-1, I would gladly take VT @ 22-1 (5 Dimes) with an easier sched.

I do think 2nd and 3rd place (Mia and NC) both finish w/ 3 L's though.

I think Ark loses to UGA and you can get better odds by then before they play Bama, Tex AM and Aub.

i actually like miami.  with their out of conference schedule, they would definetly get the shot to play for the NC should they win those games.  obviously, it wont be easy, but i wouldnt rule them out of any game.

Sorry, just being able to get back to the boards now.

I think there is a lot of love on Nebraska and that is obviously something none of us like. However I can't look past that schedule which looks easier and easier every time I look at it.

Not sure if I call them overrated just yet but at 12-1 (sportsbook.com as of last week), there is a lot of value and that is what constitutes a sleeper in my opinion.

Dude I miss the radio shows as well....hopefully we can get something up and running again before football gets into full swing.

You make excellent points. The defense was greatly improved from the first half of the season where three of those point totals you mentioned were given up. The unit returns 10 and that is huge.

With the new offense, if it works out of the gate, it could be one of the best around.

Wins last year mean nothing for this year as everyone is a year older and a year more experienced. I mentioned the schedule is brutal to open but if they can get those games, the last 3/4 of the schedule is very manageable.

THEMUGG says:
07/29/10 11:05AM

12/1 makes them one of the top 10 favs, odds-wise............is that a sleeper? I don't see much vaue in that at all. If they lose 1 game (before the B12 CG) with that weak sos, they'll be relegated to the back of the pack of the all the 1-loss teams.........& there goes their (& your) shot @ the MNC.

rjmccool says:
07/29/10 05:05PM
I'm not going to pretend The Canes don't have a brutal schedule, but if any team can handle it, they can.  Why?  Because they went through it last year, in an even more severe way, as they opened @FSU, vs GT, @Va Tech, vs Oklahoma.  At least this year, they open with FAMU to get a game under their belt.  Plus, there is one huge silver lining in this schedule, which commonly gets ignored.  They have 10 days to prepare for Ohio St, 12 days to prepare for Pitt, and 10 days to prepare for Clemson.

I'm very biased, but I have no idea how you can compare last year to current year and call yourself a capper... If teams played the same every year sports bets would be a no brainer, if anything using your theory they should go 11 and 1 getting better...  The U has a great shot on an easier schedule than last year, but tough enough to make NC with 1 or 2 loss depending upon the rest of the nation...  The O is loaded, the D is stacked (might not have played like it, they will this year)...  QB is top ten and he is healthy...   Might have the best WR crew....  RB's are solid ALL of them...  Not much not to like other than schedule.

Dunno we will see, I like their odds and 24 to 1! Hate all you like..

It should be pretty obvious.  Nobody's played any games this year.  The WHOLE FRICKING PROCESS of handicapping games at the beginning of the season is to compare this year to last year.  What in the hell are you talking about?

mws says:
07/29/10 08:49PM

You make excellent points. The defense was greatly improved from the first half of the season where three of those point totals you mentioned were given up.

The Clemson game and the UNC game were both in the second half of the season.  In the second half of the season, the Canes also allowed Wake Forest to run up 555 yards.

mws says:
07/29/10 08:52PM
Now, injuries were a factor, as BA pointed out, but the defense was actually much worse in the second half of the season than in the first.

you didn't even bet the best odds!!!

wow, I have never gotten an answer from the "experts" an for not even saying "my bad" on the odds, is just bad.

I hope you bet all 3

don't go crazy over the Canes .....JUST YET....

TRUE....many here ..one individual in particular...fails to see the ENTIRE picture....with no awareness of the improvements they have shown....and the huge setbacks also......> SCHEDULE + (too many) coaching changes + INJURIES ( a ton).....only 3 guys on D were able to go every week LY.....over 45 starts lost on D alone.....now....on D....166 starts return (63 DL...41 LB...62 DB).....last year had ZERO depth...and had to stay on the field way too long in some games....due to offense's inability to sustain drives

still......ranked #31 in total D ....5.2/play.......#22 in rush D...3.6/rush....(vs winning teams)

REMEMBER.....when even reasonably healthy (several key defenders were already hurt) ....week 2 ....held Ga Tech to (by far) their lowest output of the season.....the Wreck had 317 vs N Caro.....333 and 301 vs Clemson...309 vs V Tech   .....only managed 95 vs that "awful" Canes rush D....sure... when 8 guys were out vs WF...they struggled   ....
only 1 team managed over 200 yards vs the decimated.....and "awful" rush D....(hokies in the rain/mud..canes top 2 DL out).....Clemson only 84 on 34 carries (including one 45 yard run by Spiller)

PROBLEM ?......Canes were thrust into prime time...before they were ready.....(let's face it....Shannon has been learning on the job himself also)......so off 2 big wins LY......got way  too much hype.....way too soon

STILL....maybe a year away from seriously making a run  ....OL issues.....combined with unproven RB's.... might make it difficult......BUT....if OL comes thru.....and a guy like Lamar Miller steps up ...could easily do some damage this year...

* I will do a very extensive breakdown on the Buckeye game soon...so far that game screams UNDER.......
