Time to blow whistle on NBA officiating

We have seen some great drama unfold thus far in the playoffs. "Big Baby" Glen Davis showing you can never underestimate the heart of a champion when he hit a 21 foot shot at the buzzer. Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony have not only been money in the bank on the court so far this postseason, they have been money in the bank for bettors, going a ridiculous 17-0 against the spread (depending on what number you got on the Cavs and Nuggets on Monday night.  But bettors could have laid 9.5 with the Cavs and taken +2.5 with the Nuggets).

While things have been thrilling for the most part, there has been too much involvement from officials at key junctures of games. Also, whats the deal with two different types of flagrant calls to choose from? Now this is just starting to get ridiculous.
Twenty five years ago in one of the most popular NBA Finals ever, Kevin McHale hit Kurt Rambis with the clothesline heard round the world. Ok. it was at least seen throughout the Forum. In today's NBA, McHale would have been certainly been thrown out of that game and suspended for the following game. The refs let the highly competititive and talented players play and the series ended up being a classic largely due to the great NONSTOP action and high scoring games.

Just because there are different types of flagrant calls in place does not mean that referees need to start implementing them. Looking at the remaining teams left in the postseason, we have are the makings for another Finals that could rival the one back in '84.  Will it be Lebron vs Kobe to show who is the single best player on the single best team in the league? How about Melo vs Lebron to see which 2003 rookie will win their first title? David Stern just do us all a favor, and tell your guys to chill out with the flagrants.

Manny Needs to Man Up

Barely two months after signing a two year, $45 million dollar deal with the Dodgers, Manny Ramirez was suspended 50 games for having a woman's fertility drug in his system that is often taken by people who come off a steroid cycle.

Now he finds himself in an absolutely helpless position. Ramirez can't suit up again until July 3. If Manny wants to bring something positive out of this situation, he will heed the advice of Dodgers owner Frank McCourt. McCourt wants Manny to speak out to his teammates about his current dilemma.

Ramirez could stand to help his case if he went in front of the media a day or two after he meets with his teammates. If Manny has a good session with the press, which shows he is genuinely sincere, this will help his public image. We are generally a pretty forgiving society with celebrities, just ask Martha Stewart.
I understand that it's not easy to let the whole world in on your recent transgression.  But if you just wallow in the mire and do nothing, you are going to cloud your image even more. To say Ramirez wore out his welcome in Boston would be an understatement.  If Manny wants to show his Dodger brethren that he can be a teammate to be counted on, he will fess up before he dresses up.
But that is just my Perspective.  I would love to hear your comments so please post your thoughts below.  Thanks everybody...

I couldn't agree more. The refs are so afraid of losing control and what could happen that they are calling flagrant fouls on guys barely getting touched. They are turning these players into pansies that beg for flagrants when they are fouled with any force. What happened to the days of a "hard playoff foul". It is one thing to be dirty, which should be handled accordingly, but it would be nice to see it like the old days where they were allowed to not give up an easy layup. LET EM PLAY!

I've never understood this notion of losing control of the game. The only thing the refs should worry about controlling is the urge to blow the whistle. Let the players play and stop calling ticky-tac fouls away from the ball in the first few minutes of the game. LET THEM PLAY!

As a former (high school) referees, I can safely speak for refs everywhere on every level that the LAST thing they want is for a game to get out of control. It's a fine line, especially in the NBA which needs its superstars to stay in the game for TV ratings.

The problem with LETTING THEM PLAY is that things escalate over the course of 48 minutes. Fouls that are called early might not be called late, and players -- who all say they want consistency from the refs -- don't know what is allowed and what isn't. Rafer Alston says he smacked Eddie House on the head in Game 2 because he (Alton) needed "to be a man." Multiply that times 12 players on a team times 2 teams, and it can get nasty.

Another factor: Referees are human, and they all see things differently. A foul to one ref is incidental contact to another, and this is the case no matter what three officials are working the game.

All that said, MichaelPerry's original point -- that too many flagrant fouls are called -- has merit. The Flagrant 1 and 2 differentiation is a copout on the league's part, just an effort to keep stars on the court. BUT...BUT...BUT...don't forget also that refs are doing the job they are paid to do. If the league wants to end the Flagrant 1/2 business, it can. But it's unfair to diss the refs for doing a job they were hired to do.

As far as Manny goes, if Ramirez takes responsibility for his actions, it will be the first time. When he was in Boston, he became jealous of Pedro Martinez, who for a long time was able to come and go as he pleased, showing up late for games and not being called on it. Manny wanted a piece of that pie, and started blowing off the All-Star Game and opting out of the lineup. On more than one occasion he flat-out quit on the team. He's now a cheat, and even if the LA fans welcome him back, that will follow him forever.

Celts win!!! Orlando couldn't close it out and now the momentum has switched. I was last night's game and the officiating was brutal. They started off policing the game a little too stringent; then the last 5-7 minutes, they just let them play. I guess my biggest beef is the inconsistency show throughout these NBA playoffs. That's my two cents; and I'm sticking to it.

Great article Mr. Perry; and even better pic as your avitar! I like the guy in the background with the hat on (still).

I couldnt agree more with your take on the Refs staying in the background and letting the players decide who wins what appears to be an epic final series-- LaBron vs Kobe. Manny is just being Manny and the Dodgers shouldn't be surprised with the excess baggage that comes with Manny. He has no class and only cares about Manny, they would be better off teamwise to just cut him loose, he is a cancer that will only destroy an excellant TEAM that has the potential to win it all.
