Expect Calipari to Call Kentucky Home

Memphis has given Kentucky permission to speak to John Calipari about their head coach vacancy. Now, its just a matter of time before Calipari bolts for greener pastures in Lexington.

Kentucky looked a bit foolish letting Tubby Smith leave for Minnesota two years ago. All Tubby did in 10 seasons, was win 268 games, go 120-40 in the SEC, and oh yeah, win a national championship in 1998.

Smith's replacement, Billy Gillespie, had a couple nice teams at Texas A&M, but he only had coached at UTEP a couple years prior. If you are a prospective recruit, I think you would rather play for a coach like Smith over Gillespie just because of the experience he has which he can bestow upon you.

Now that they have dropped the ball on two occassions, expect Kentucky to do some damage control and hire Calipari. There are alot of upset boosters and the program is starting to take a step back, so they need to throw out the full court press on him if they want to return to prominence in the near future.

Its not a slam dunk that Calipari willl leave Memphis. Now that the NBA has increased the minimum age to play to 19, he often gets guys who intend to play in college one season (Derrick Rose, and very soon Tyreke Evans). Reason being, is that Memphis plays in a weaker conference, and so players have the opportunity to pad their stats a bit. Also, they do not get worn down as much as if they played in a upper echelon conference.

My money's on Kentucky landing Calipari. They are going to have their third coach in four years, so this hire has to be big name.

I don't think he goes. They have the top-ranked recruiting class coming in next year and without Calipari on the sideline, I think a lot of these kids will try to get out of their commitments.

The real question is who is going to Arizona?

This makes perfect sense for Calipari. He has always wanted to be Rick Pitino, so taking the Kentucky job is the next logical step. He'll just pack up that top-ranked recruiting class and take it with him.

The only drawback is that Calipari loves the adulation and cult-hero status the Memphis fans have bestowed upon him. Such esteem won't be as easy to come by at Kentucky; neither will the 30-win seasons. But there's no chance he turns this down.

It says here Mark Few ends up at Arizona; he has turned down big jobs in the past, but this year might persuade him that he has reached the ceiling for progress at Gonzaga.

How about Tom Izzo in AZ? Guy has proven he has done everything possible at Michigan State. Tucson seems like a very nice venue to close out your coaching career and try a new opportunity at the same time.

The question about Izzo and Arizona boils down to motivation; it sounds nice but ... really, why would he leave? Izzo is a lunch-bucket guy from a lunch-bucket town, and city and coach love each other.

With Izzo taking MSU to a Final Four in Detroit, the love fest has never been more intense. He's bound to get a raise for doing this ... not that he needs one to stay. Arizona would be a lateral move at best, and I can't imagine them offering enough money for Izzo to leave the place where he is so beloved.

He could decide that he needs the proverbial "new challenge," but I doubt it.

I think Izzo is such a loyal guy that he will stick in East Lansing, but 'Zona certainly is a tempting situation.

Izzo doesn't leave Michigan St.........He embodies evrything that is Michigan. He is as blue collar as the state itself. He has been extremely succesful. 4 FINAL 4 appearances in 11 years. That is amazing considering that he does NOT recruit nationally. He accomplishes this with home grown talent. Izzo is 1 of the best 3 coaches in college basketball. And certainly the most under-rated. Although, I think that any program would be lucky to have him. I don't see him leaving the state.

FrankieNapp,

No, I think with the way Michigan is struggling more than the average state, due to the current automobile ordeal, that Izzo stays for the people here.

Looks like it is a done deal.
