We're lucky to have Chucky for MNF

Kudos to ESPN for hiring Jon Gruden to replace Tony Kornheiser in the Monday Night Football booth. For the past 3 seasons, we had to endure 3 years of mediocrity from the MNF annoucing crew, primarily due to Kornheiser's inadequacies.

Mike Tirico and Ron Jaworski both know the NFL quite well, but Kornheiser seemed to drag everything down because of his babbling nonsense. Jaworski, who is one of the nicest and classiest guys in the business, seemed to have enough of Kornheiser's shenanigans last season as well.

I was shocked when I first heard that Kornheiser was given the job in 2006. I think that the show he is known for (Pardon The Interruption) is fantastic. However, if you really pay attention to him on it, you know his current knowledge on the happenings of sports, is subpar at best.

The guy happened to be a part of one of the most storied programs in ESPN history and company executives thought that could translate over to the NFL and Monday Night Football. I cant fault him for taking the MNF gig. ESPN should be ashamed they hired this guy.

ESPN, and all major networks, here's a simple request.  Instead of hiring someone to cater to someone who may not be an average fan, hire someone who will give the average football fan the knowledge and insight to want to come back and watch more. In the meantime, thanks for the upgrade.

NBA Starting to Become More Competitive

I get frustrated when I see some of the antics of the modern NBA player. Both the Rockets and Celtics should be embarrassed with their game 7 efforts Sunday. Houston let the Lakers go out to a 8-0 lead, and didnt even make a field goal until 7 minutes had elapsed. Now thats just inexcusable, even without Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming.

The defending champion Celtics effort to start the 4th quarter of their game 7 was equally as bad. Boston found themselves trailing by five after 3 quarters. But trouble quickly arises because Stephon Marbury thinks its 1999 all over again, and starts taking ill advised shot after ill advised shot. Result, Orlando goes on a 11-0 run to put the game away.

Yes it is upsetting to witness so many players in the NBA who dont take more pride in their work. Players today do not hustle game after game and play after play like they did 15-20 years ago. But things are getting better. Back in the beginning of the decade, the NBA was as predictable of a league as there was. It was the Lakers versus whatever sacraficial lamb in the East who wanted to emerge. Yes, the Lakers were a dominant team back then, but the effort that many teams were giving at the same time, was laughable.

Things are starting to become more positive in the league. David Stern has made his players more accountable off the court. The 2003 NBA Draft also provided arguably the most talented class ever. Having players like Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Carmelo Anthony provided just what the NBA needed. Excitement and Parity.

Gruden has never done color commentary for even 1 game in his life.

Don't count your chickens before their hatched,  the guy might suck.

For some reason I'm having a hard time picturing Gruden as a color commentary guy.   Just doesn't seem to me to have the right personality for it.

I'm wrong alot though.       We'll see.

I think we're more lucky not to have Korn.

I think Gruden will do a good job, but he is a bit on the serious side

Kornheiser really had no redeeming qualities on MNF..so happy to see this change

I think Gruden will do a fine job and I to won't miss Kornheiser. But I do find Gruden to be an interesting choice because I don't think he'll be doing it for more than 2 years, if that long. Gruden is too young to go from the sideline to the booth. The NFL will be calling soon enough, if not them then Notre Dame. So ESPN is going to invest time and money to groom Gruden for the job, their going to market Gruden as part of their MNF team and in the end he'll be gone before you know it. I'm also not the biggest fan of a 3 man booth. Two guys are plenty and there's no reason for a 3rd. I think the best announcing teams are Joe Buck/Troy Aikmen and Jim Nantz/Phil Sims.

As long as Gruden doesn't suck Favre's dick like Kornheiser did, it would be an improvement. Now ESPN/ABC just needs to rid themselves of Stuart Scott and Avery Johnson doing the pre and postgame shows. I can't listen to the forced ebonics bullshit that comes out of Scott's mouth or that everyone is the greatest player on the planet. These jerkoff's patronize athlete's on the air instead of giving thoughtful analysis. I bet sports for a living and probably use Phil Simms and Jeff Van Gundy as the only 2 announcers helpful as a handicapper.

I have the sound on mute for any game I watch----loathe pretty much any and every announcer out there-----so ESPN can put any idiot they want in the booth.  Who cares?

I agree with pchilds that sometimes it's best to keep it simple; Nantz and Simms are a terrific team because of their basic dynamic of Nantz's subtle and solid professionalism combined with Simms' knowledge of the game and self-deprecating wit. Joe Buck also is a consummate pro even though he is a baseball guy first, and Troy Aikman has come a long way as a color analyst.

Gruden is an interesting choice, but not might have much of a shelf life as he does seem destined to return to the sidelines at some point. I think everyone here is being a little harsh on Kornheiser. He might have worked under the right circumstances; I fault Jaworski as much as anybody.

As neither a former play or coach, Kornheiser viewed the game through a different lens, and at least he had the nerve to ask some difficult questions and take the broadcast a little out of its comfort zone.

Nagel-

Kornheiser asked difficult questions? Perhaps I was too hammered to hear any of those...His fawning over Favre in half the telecasts came off as a schoolboy crush and I tuned out to the rest of his comments. He clearly didn't have enough knowledge of the game to be in the booth, as the network bosses try to create some sort of common man vibe in the booth. Clay is right. Watching the game muted is the best way to stay sane, as I tire of yelling at the TV when a stupid comment or lack of observation comes from these commentators mouths'.

Now get rid of Jaws and we are getting somewhere.  Ridding Theismann was a start, Jaws next.

The Ditka 2nd team that always does the second MNF game in Week One is the best in the business.  I think Mike Golic and some other bloke, Mike maybe, is the third guy.  Look forward to the late MNF game in Week One every year just to hear how they call the game.  Almost flawless.

Chucky will do better than Kornball, he CAN'T do worse.  He has a sense of humor and can laugh at himself.  I think he will fit in well, hope so, anyway.  If not I can tune the game in on Westwood One as usual.
