There's a good chance Cliff Lee will come back to earth today in Toronto

After betting against Cliff Lee twice in the month of June, I finally smartened up last week and sent it on the Phillies -1.5 +175 the night Lee shutout the Red Sox, 5-0.  With that latest masterpiece, Cliff Lee completed one of the greatest months any starting pitcher has ever submitted.  Check it out:

21 hits allowed in 42 innings pitched

28 strikeouts/7 walks

0.21 ERA (he gave up one lonely run for the whole month!)

5 wins 0 losses

32 consecutive shutout innings

3 straight shutouts

That's not human.  Who in their right mind would dare bet against this man right now?  Well, maybe me.  I had the Jays yesterday +160 and +1.5 -105, and it wasn't exactly a confidence-inspiring performance, but I think the time may be ripe for Lee to go out and have himself a terrible outing.

Prior to his June 22nd start in St. Louis, I noticed something about Lee's pitch counts this season.  From April 25th to May 6th, Lee threw a total of 332 pitches in three starts.  In his next start, going on 4 days rest, Lee was so-so, lasting just 6 innings and 82 pitches while giving up 7 hits and 3 earned runs to the Marlins.  In his next three starts after that, Lee threw a ridiculous total of 356 pitches!  That seemed to catch up to him in his next start, which took place on May 31st in Washington.  Again going on 4 days rest, Lee got shelled by the Nationals, allowing 7 hits, 3 walks, and 6 earned runs before getting knocked out in the 6th inning of a 10-2 loss.

Then came the month of June.  The first three victims were the Dodgers, Cubs, and Marlins.  Lee threw 347 pitches in beating them all.  That's where I decided to try and fade him off of three straight taxing starts.  Lee was scheduled to pitch June 22nd in St. Louis, and was a -150 favorite against the Pujols-less Cardinals.  The one thing I didn't like about the situation, though, was that Lee was going on 5 days rest instead of 4.  I decided to plow ahead with my Lee fade anyway, taking the Cards +145.  Big mistake.  Instead of sputtering, Lee used the extra day of rest to his advantage and went 9 innings in shutting out the Deadbirds on a whopping 126 pitches.  I felt shame.

So, I looked ahead to Lee's next turn in the rotation to see if I might try fading him off of 4 starts in which he'd thrown a staggering 473 pitches.  But I saw that his next start, which was last Wednesday against the Red Sox, would again have him enjoying 5 days of rest.  So instead of betting against him, I went with him, and Lee was The Man once again, pitching another shutout, this time throwing 112 pitches.  I felt pride.

But now I'm again contemplating an unthinkable fade of Cliff Lee.  This time around, he's taking the ball in Toronto after throwing 585 pitches in his last 5 brilliant starts, except this time, he's going on 4 days of rest.  In his five June starts, Lee enjoyed pitching on 5 days rest three times, including the last two.  Now, though, I think he's going to show up with much less than his best stuff.  In fact, this time he's not even getting a full 4 days.  Lee is getting shorted six hours with the 1 ET start instead of the usual night game starting time.  Most everyone is expecting another string of zeroes across the scoreboard, but I'll be very surprised if he enjoys another great start.

By the way, to bore you even further, Lee had similar troubles last year after being acquired by the Rangers in July. In his first start for Texas, after four straight workhorse starts for the Mariners, Lee was bombed in his Rangers debut.  In August, after having thrown 340 pitches in his last three starts, Lee allowed 8 hits and 4 runs in 6.1 innings in a loss to the Yankees.  In late September, after having thrown 324 pitches in his last three starts, Lee allowed 6 hits and 4 runs in just 5 innings in a loss to the A's.  Finally, in the postseason, after having thrown 346 pitches in two dominating ALDS wins over the Rays and one 8 inning gem against the Yankees, Lee was absolutely terrible in Game 1 of the World Series, thus disappointing many a square.

You have uncovered this great statistic, you will be able to get a great price. I know you said you are contemplating a play, what will/would make you change this from a lean to an actual play?

Yup, and that's why our brilliant minds are beginning to think over 7.5 might be good.

MrBator says:

I pay close attention to who around here is on board with me, and who isn't, and of course, the price I get plays a big role in determining how much I risk or if I risk anything at all.

MrBator says:
07/03/11 10:49AM

Good plan.

MrBator says:
07/03/11 10:58AM

It's not the same.  Detroit is a good team, they're at home, and they're favored.  The situation Friday night in Texas (a 15-5 Rangers win) and June 20th in Boston (a 14-5 Red Sox win) involved heavily favored home teams building big leads over their opponents which then turned into laughably big leads.  The failure of the road underdog to keep a lopsided game from becoming a joke of a game made it difficult (in my opinion) for the heavy home favorite to avoid serious complacency the next night.

MrBator says:

Judging by your imagery, I suspect your personal gay porn library to be vast.  Take it easy on that stuff.  The deviance of the material is seeping into other areas of your life and I'll bet you don't even realize it.

MrBator says:
07/03/11 11:04AM

I used to think like this - back when I was 21 and got introduced to betting on baseball.  The next thing I got introduced to was something called a "payment plan."

MrBator says:
07/03/11 11:06AM

You know, if those powerhouse, big name teams could only play like powerhouses for six months solid, with no slumps, you'd really have something there.  Then again, if they could do that, you'd be layng between -300 and -400 all the time, so maybe you wouldn't have something there.

MrBator says:
07/03/11 11:08AM

Am I limited to just one?  I'm sure I'll have at least four or five plays today, maybe more.

MrBator says:
07/03/11 11:11AM

I think that no athlete can dominate to this extent for very long and I think that baseball is a humbling game.  I'll be amazed if Cliff Lee throws another complete game shutout today or anything close to it.

MrBator says:
07/03/11 11:14AM

Nice!  I didn't know that.

MrBator says:

Plus 2.5 runs would have been a great idea for me.......yesterday.

Nice throw to second on the easy double play ball, Jon Rauch, you big animal.

MrBator says:
07/03/11 11:25AM

No.  This line closed +175 at the Las Vegas Hilton.  All indications were that the Tigers were going to roll.  I wonder if the pitchers on the Tigers staff are permitted to make eye contact with Justin Verlander, or if they have to bow their heads to him when they walk past each other?

MrBator says:
07/03/11 11:27AM

It takes courage to do it, but I think that now is the time.  Now is the ideal time.  Either Jays, the over, or the Jays team total over.  Any of that should be worth a play.

MrBator says:
07/03/11 11:29AM

Bator, so you don't believe in not predicting when a trend is going to end? Meaning I was always taught to never predict when a pitcher is going to come out of a slump or go into a slump, or when a hot teams winning streak is going to end but wait until they actually DO lose.

Hey Bator,

The ironic twist in this matchup is that Reyes has controlled the Philly lineup in the past, particularly their leadoff guy, Rollins, which I think is an added edge, however slight,  when a pitcher can keep the no. 1 slot off the bases.

Lee may beat the Jays today, but he won't be fooling them with his stuff. They've hit him well in the past. I'm looking hard at the over and/or the Jays + 1 1/2.

Thanks for the great writeup and analysis.

Yeah, I fell for it with the SFG TT UNDER and the DET TT OVER. Couldn't have been more wrong but I think it was statistically the right play in the long term. Funny though when you have a TT bet that loses in the first inning, doesn't sting nearly as much
kaponofor3 says:

That 8-9-1 stretch could be tough for Lee today, and we really don't have any historical evidence for Eric Thames but .319 in 20 games for a newly called up rookie is nothing to shake a stick at. Bautista is always scary for opposing pitchers.
kaponofor3 says:
07/03/11 11:40AM
TOR starting line-up against Lee:

1. Aaron Hill, .333 career (5-15)
2. Eric Thames (new call up, batting .319 in 20 games)
3. Jose Bautista, .200 career (1-5)
4. Adam Lind, .111 career (1-9)
5. Juan Rivera, .286 career (6-21)
6. Edwin Encarnacion, .000 career (0-5)
7. JP Arenciaba, no career at-bats
8. Rajai Davis, .500 career (4-8)
9. John McDonald, .375 career (3-8)

Food for thought, four guys batting above .280 career against Lee, that's pretty good for one squad I'd have to imagine.

If Doug Davis can shutdown the Yankees, then anything is possible for JoJo.  I like the fact that he has faced this team in the past and the Jays' lineup looks solid with Hill leading off, Juan in the 5 hole and Old McDonald in the nine spot.  And even if I could get 170 with the Jays at home, I still feel like I'm being robbed.  Should be like +220, IMO.

here's another couple of stats for today (I'm sure MrB won't mind me interjecting)...

Since Utley returned to the lineup and immediately helped the Phils batter the Reds pitching for 28 runs in 4 games, there's been a strong whiff of futility come over this offense, specifically in the 1st 5 innings of games.
Discounting their series vs the Marlins (cause that team was so competitively futile at the time, stats rendered against them don't mean a lot), this is how Philly has fared over the 1st 5 inns of their last 25 games (going backwards, bolded = road games):

2, 2, 0, 1, 3, 3, 1, 0, 0, 3, 0, 0, 1, 0, 2, 2, 3, 3, 0, 1, 2, 3, 2, 0, 1, 2, 3, 1, 1 & 2 runs

While their home average (1.62 runs) is higher than away (1.35 runs), they basically have to thank meeting the woeful Cubs (underlined) for that fact.

Contrast the above with their performance from the 6th inning onwards in these same games:

3, 5, 2, 1, 2, 0, 0, 1, 2, 1, 10, 0, 4, 2, 2, 5, 4, 0, 2, 1, 1, 4, 1, 1, 0, 0, 2, 4, 4 & 4 runs

Not once in the 1st 5 innings have they scored more than 3 runs, yet have done no fewer than 9 times in less innings over the backend of games.

BetCrimes1984 says:

That's pathetic. Where's the deception? he's posted his play, and the reasons for his play. Where's the gun to anyone's head to follow along? Furthermore, what's this play got to do with yesterday's play, or where he posted it? What idiot believes because someone won yesterday, it must mean they'll win today (good statistical reasons offered, or not)? If he had no great stats to base yesterdays play on, why would he make a thread dedicated to said play, instead of inserting it into another thread? (I didn't see it, but I presume the theme of that thread was in keeping with his play - that's how I've seen him 'hide' his plays before) He has a lot of stats for his play today, so he makes a thread dedicated to sharing said stats.

Please, save my eyeballs from losing precious seconds off their lifespans by not posting again, at least in this thread.

MrBator....As a die-hard Phillies fan that has done pretty well betting against them in select spots I think this is a perfect spot for the Blue Jays.  If you saw yesterday's game the Blue Jays batters were complaining about the strike zone all day.  This culminated in the Jon Rauch blow-up and John Farrell getting ejected.  After getting ejected,  Farrell angrily demostrated at home plate that Halladay was getting pitches off the plate all day and the Jays pitchers were not getting the same respect.  Something tells me that Cliff Lee is going to get a tight strike zone and this will hurt him as he is all about pinpoint control on the corners.
I also agree with you on his pitch counts.  As a Phillies fan I hate how Manuel rides his Big Three starters.  The season is a marathon and not a sprint and he does not realize it's okay to save them some innings and pitches here and there.

As you all can see, I'm watching this thread closely? Why? No...not because "Covers protects MrBator" so you can save that conspiracy theory. (Hell...he got boxed awhile ago for a borderline incident). I'm watching because I just KNEW that the bashers would come back if the Phils took an early lead.

MrBator made a thread with his pick and a SOLID statistical reasoning behind it, and not ONCE did he act like everyone should follow him.

Therefore...here's how it's going to go...you bash...you get boxed. The end.

Out of those six, I had only the Twins +110.  We all love to complain bitterly when some dude makes an error that mortally wounds our bet, so it's only right we acknowledge when we got lucky thanks to someone else's mistake.  So thank you, Mark Kotsay, for misplaying Danny Valencia's 7th inning two-out bases loaded single into a bases clearing single and two-base error.

Way to go, dipshit.

MrBator says:
07/03/11 09:50PM

I just got back home.  My runner for the day didn't show up for work today, so by 10:30 PT I had to split and go out placing bets myself.  The number that sent me out the door was Station Casinos going to +130 on the Mets.  I will savor that win for a long time.  It's not every day I get to benefit from a Mariano Rivera blown save.  In fact, it's not every year.  In fact, I can't remember the last time he screwed up and it helped me.  I did once get to see a Rivera blown save in person.  It happened in Anaheim, and it had to be at least ten years ago, because I just tried to look up the game and couldn't find it searching as far back as 2002.  Rivera blew the save and the game, too.  I think the final was 6-5.

The Jays came through, as Cliff Lee finally cracked.  Too bad I managed to make the minimum profit on such a glorious winner.  The idea, which more than a few of us agreed upon this morning, was that the Blue Jays +170, over 8, and the Blue Jays team total over were all plays.  I didn't bet the over simply because I hate betting overs.  I didn't bet the team total over because my only two options were over 3 -125 and over 3.5 +105.  And finally, I split my bet between the first 5 innings and game, partly out of necessity (because my runner flaked, and by the way - he's fired), and partly because I thought Lee would cave in early, so it wasn't a bad idea.  As Lee worked on the Jays in the bottom of the 5th, I texted a buddy and wrote "Jays will get to Lee later AFTER my 1st 5 inning action is put to sleep."  And of course, that's exactly what happened.  I wasn't exactly celebrating in that bottom of the 8th when Toronto began smashing home runs, knowing I was going to win little when I should have won a ton.

MrBator says:
07/04/11 01:04AM

Just like everybody else, I'm on the wrong end of far more bad beats than lucky wins.  The lucky wins are to be savored.  They really do feel more meaningful.  Pulling out that game today with the Mets was maybe the luckiest baseball win I've had this year.  It was certainly the most valuable.  That was a huge swing to go from a ho-hum Mariano shuts the door 2-1 loser to a lookee here 3-2 winner.

MrBator says:
07/04/11 01:58AM

I've bet on the Mets in each of R.A. Dickey's last three Citi Field starts.  He's allowed 1 run in each while averaging 7 innings.  The Mets beat the Braves, A's, and Yanks in those games.  I had full confidence in the guy today.  And props to Pedro "Bad" Beato who contributed two scoreless innings today.  I think he's still trying hard to make us forget about his disastrous outing at Wrigley on May 26th.

MrBator says:
07/03/11 10:37PM

It could be.  And it could also be that UMF is a deeply self-loathing, hateful, petulant, bumbling moron who seems to enjoy having me kick him in the balls from time to time.  And you know what?  I'm happy to do it.

You fucked yourself by accepting this wager. I would love to book your action. We all have some gamble to us, and no matter what anybody says we've all made the action-junkie parlay, but your payout isn't remotely close to what it should be. You should have been paid in the $375-380 range on that parlay to begin with.
