It doesn't look good tonight for the Suns in Denver

I know more than a few of you had eyebrows raised high when you took your first look at Saturday's NBA lines and saw the Phoenix Suns getting 8.5 points at Denver.  So what compelled the sleazy oddsmakers ("the Pirates of the Caribbean") to make this line "so high"?  I think I've found at least one answer.  The Suns tonight are playing on the road in the second game of a back-to-back.  That's a challenging situation for any team, but for the Suns, when facing a winning team, it's pretty much become the death knell.  Take a look at how the Suns have fared between this season and last when playing with no rest on the road against an above .500 team:

November 17, 2008 at Utah getting 2 - the Suns lost, 109-97

December 4, 2008 at Dallas getting 3 - the Suns lost, 112-97

December 10, 2008 at the Lakers getting 13.5 - the Suns lost, 115-110

January 19, 2009 at Boston getting 8 - the Suns lost, 104-87

February 9, 2009 at Philadelphia getting 3.5 - the Suns lost, 108-91

March 4, 2009 at Miami getting 2.5 - the Suns lost, 135-129

March 26, 2009 at Portland getting 6.5 - the Suns lost, 129-109

November 4 at Orlando getting 7.5 - the Suns lost, 122-100

November 12 at the Lakers getting 9.5 - the Suns lost, 121-102

December 2, 2009 at Cleveland getting 7.5 - the Suns lost, 107-90

December 6 at the Lakers getting 9.5 - the Suns lost, 108-88

That's not pretty.  The 2008 and 2009 Suns have gone 0-11 SU & 1-10 ATS in this situation, losing those eleven games by an average of 15.5 points per game.  And while they were reasonably competitive in two of those games from last season, this season they've been flattened all four times by 22, 19, 17, and 20 points.

If you're wondering if I have any explanation for the one time they did cover the spread, the answer is.......of course I do!   When the Suns covered easily as 13.5-point dogs a year ago at the Staples Center against the Lakers, they had only eight available players for the game that night.  That's because earlier in the day, they had traded Raja Bell, Boris Diaw, and rookie Sean Singletary to Charlotte in exchange for Jason Richardson and Jared Dudley.  Also, they were without Shaquille O'Neal because he was in New Jersey attending the funeral of his great-grandmother.  Because of all that, the oddsmakers pumped the line way up, and as usually happens in sports when one team is shorthanded and appears to have no chance, the shorthanded team played their butts off while their opponent took them lightly and nearly blew the game.  Kobe summed it up himself after the game, saying "That's what always happens when a team has eight players, nine players.  They always come out with a lot of energy."  The Lakers, as we all know, are the masters of taking teams lightly when they're double-digit home favorites, and it so happens that the Lakers were right in the middle of a stretch of 14 games in which they went an incredibly lazy 1-13 ATS.

Oh, and if you're wondering what Philadelphia is doing on that list, you can look it up - the Sixers were 25-24 going into that game.

Here's another thing.  Tonight will be the third time this season that the Suns have been caught up in the following terrible scheduling situation - returning home from a road trip, playing a single home game, and then boarding a flight immediately afterwards for a road game the next night.  That unlucky scheduling spot is tough for the entire league, but not every team has to deal with it.  That's the luck of the draw in NBA scheduling.  Well, the Suns got stuck with this three times during this regular season, and the first two road games (both at the Lakers) resulted in blowout losses.  By the way, the Suns failed to cover every 1st half and every 2nd half in those games in L.A.

Denver -8.5 -110 risking 11 units (might add more later)

That's some detailed and thorough analysis for a particular spot.

My numbers show Denver by at least 9, 121-105 final score

In addition, teams playing in Den or Utah in the back half of a b2b fare very poorly.  Some say it's coming to altitude after a previous game.  Doesn't happen too often, but Utah also applies tonight.

Phoenix had 2 days before last nights victory vs Orlando and Denver is returning from a 4 game road trip in which they looked terrible. Nuggets are in a funk right now. They've been horrible defensively, how the hell does Detroit score 100+ on em? They settle for crazy jumpshots and are not playin team ball right now. I see the Suns winning this game str8 up.

Phoenix is worse on defense, and Denver annihilates team with bad defense at home, and no rest. (see Warriors and Lakers)

Phoenix had two days rest before facing Sacramento at home last Saturday, then got buried the next night against the Lakers.

That makes it even better.  I don't know about you, but I don't want to bet on a home favorite when they've been looking good their last few games.  I'd rather lay points with a home team that "looks" like they're laying too many.

MrBator says:
12/12/09 06:49PM

After what I just showed you?  Did you even look at my post?  Did you not notice that the Suns have been entirely non-competitive in this particular back-to-back spot?

MrBator says:

Take your finger off the panic button, chief.  So they screwed around in meaningless out-of-conference road games in Charlotte and Detroit.  So what?  Before that they brought the hammer down on the Warriors, Heat, Spurs, and Sixers.  In Charlotte they were playing without rest after Billups had played 42 minutes the night before in Philly.  Billups then went out and had a horrible game.  And in Detroit......well, crap, they always fuck up in Detroit, no matter which team Chauncey Billups is playing for.

MrBator says:
12/12/09 07:00PM

I wouldn't lay it, but I wouldn't take it, either, not with the Bulls having recently been placed on my U.P.S. list.

Good catch, LookKaPyPy.  Wow, Luol Deng (52), Joakim Noah (43), John Salmons (44), Derridk Rose (43).  These guys are up against it tonight.  I watched the last minutes of regulation and OT last night and the Bulls looked weak in barely shaking off Golden State.

I like OVER myself here. This line is not 240 points because of the recent games for Suns and their 7-game UNDER streak.

But they will still be playing with no rest. A bad defensive team with no rest will defend less than average, and Phoenix have played four games on the road with no rest and it has allowed 114.6 ppg in regulation to the opponent.

Denver will put 125-135 tonight. Phoenix will score their usual 105+ points.

Just kinda skimmed through all your stuff but I read somewhere that teams in the 2nd game of a b2b in Denver were like 0-18 or some ridiculous trend. (usually not covering ATS either) I guess the fatigue and altitude is not good for the visitors.

By the way, I mentioned that Phoenix have played four games on the road with no rest, they have actually played five games.

Orlando (122 points) (Magic 2nd home game of season. It had scored 120 points against 76ers in their opponent) (+2 points better when faced Suns)
Philadelphia (115 points) (Averaged 90 points at home before facing Phoenix) (+25 points better when faced Suns)
Lakers (121 points) (Averaged 103 points at home before facing Phoenix) (+18 points better when Suns in town)
Cleveland (107 points) (Averaged 96.9 points at home before facing Suns) (+10.1 points better when faced Suns)
Lakers (108 points) (Avareaged 104.7 points at home before facing Suns) (+3.3 points better when faced Suns)

So these five teams increased their home point statistics when Suns visited town with no rest.

The average of +11.68

Nuggets averaging 117.2 points at home, if we add these Suns defense with no rest should score about 128-129 points.

Even if you removed the high and low score (+25 points from 76ers and +2 from Magic), you get an average of +10.5

So, Denver should score at least +10 points more than they average at home with Phoenix.

125-130 points. Unless Phoenix stink the bed scoring less than 100 points, we can see a good Nuggets + OVER parlay hit.

I was going to post a writeup about Denver tonight but this is better than anything I would have written.

How about a couple more trends: Phoenix is 1-4 SU and ATS the last two seasons on the 2nd of a b2b after Steve Nash played 40 minutes or more in the 1st game.

Denver is 10-3 SU and 9-4 ATS in a home game following a road loss the last 2 years. Two of the losses came last season when they did not have any rest between games (road loss in game 1, home game next night) and they were against Boston and Cleveland.

I know your threads attract plenty of leeches but you should post more often. It's not about posting winners (to me anyway) it's about reading great insight and analysis and learning things to look out for in the future.

No.  Having The Curse of the Bator Thread strike so violently left me too discouraged to consider any further action.  Also, along the way I was stupid enough to disregard my U.P.S. list by taking the Bulls +3 at halftime against the Celtics.  Third straight losing day for me after so much good stuff from Sunday to Wednesday.

What will tomorrow bring?

You're a stupid motherfucker.

MrBator says:
12/12/09 11:51PM

Nine misses from the line in 43 attempts is nothing to complain about.  But 41% shooting from the floor is.

Steve Nash is usually limited in what he can give the Suns when playing without rest but tonight he came up with a big game.  First Rondo on Thursday with the Celtics/Wizards under, and now old man Nash.  Bastards.

Denver was def the valuebet , just unfortunae that Suns got the hot 2nd qtr, else thy would have easiely lost by 10+ pts here.
Had the same bet, based on the same facts just didn't go that far back to dig up all those games :)

OVER was just not for tonight. Do we need to reconsider the options with Phoenix and their defensive play?

Perhaps Denver coming home after a long road trip had something to do with it.

This will the 8th straight UNDER game for Phoenix. And their O/U lines need to be adjusted.

Well Bator just got me to watch my first NBA game of the year.  Figured he usually knows what he is doing and I will check in with my hometown team.

Same old chit. The rookies are called for everything. If your name is Nash, you can committ murder and get away with it but have a magic 3 foot do not get inside of zone. Travels are non existent, unless you are a rookie or criminal.

How can it be a sport if the officiating is bias.....I cannot watch that. There cannot be a curve or need to get a rep to get the call. It is atrocious. Will make some bets but cannot watch that crap. It is horrible sport.  They need to completely redo this product.

I simply refuse to watch it as it is now. It makes me vomit all over myself.

It was a good pick backed by a powerful trend.  The suns did exactly what we exactly what we expected them to do..... What we didn't expect was for the Nuggets to inexplicably score 2 points over a 5 minutes stretch in 2nd qrt......  After watching that game, I would still take the Nuggets in that situation.....

While we are at it, mark off FEB 17th on your calendar as the night to get your money back from tonights loser.......... The suns are playing a back to back in Dallas that night

tenpinguru says:
12/13/09 11:55AM

Love how the Bator haters all follow the thread.  Not one of them mention last Sunday when he gave 6 winners, including the Arizona straight up over Minn....in fact, Bator said something along the lines of I don't even want the points.

Good capping is beating the vig.  Money management and game selection are what the betters control.  The game just f'n happens.  Can't truly handicap the refs (granted some angles have been used), can't handicap Brady losing his knee in the first quarter, or a weather report in Michigan.

This said my Sunday leans are Cincy (not a Favre Minny fan against decent defenses), Miami against an overrated Jacksonville team, and over in the KC Buff game.

Good luck

tenpinguru says:
12/13/09 12:28PM

I try to avoid playing for or against the kitty cats.  Too often my rooting interests create poor decisions.  With Stafford out and a defense which gave up many pts to Cleveland, I think Baltimore should win by 3 touchdowns.  Problem is Culpepper is competing for a spot in the league.  This game will decide his future in the league.  He has shown me nothing but I hate to bet against any dog fighting for his life.  Ask Mr. Vick how tough dog fighting.  Typically, end of the day there are no winners.  But as one poster put it, and I will paraphrase, if it looks like a fish, smells like a fish, and taste like fish.....I guess you have to conclude you are eating fish.  Lions are a bad team, with a washed up QB.  I look for a poor finish to another bad season.

Lions SuperBowl champs 2013.....you heard it here first.
