The Mighty Pats vs. what's left of the Packers tonight on NBC

Now that my misleading thread title has reeled you in, here's some bad news or good news depending on which way you're leaning for tonight's big game.

Producing back-to-back blowout wins in the NFL is hard to do, but recent history suggests that producing three in a row is almost too much to ask.  I went back over the last dozen seasons and looked to see how teams did the week after winning consecutive games in which they scored 30 or more points in each while allowing 10 points or less in each.  In other words, back-to-back monster blowouts.  I found 18 such situations, and here they are:

The St. Louis Rams in 1999 beat the Falcons 35-7, then beat the Bengals 38-10, and then beat the 49ers 42-20.

The Jacksonville Jaguars in 1999 beat the Bengals 41-10, then beat the Falcons 30-7, and then beat the Ravens 6-3 (but didn't cover as a 13-point favorite).

The Kansas City Chiefs in 1999 beat the Ravens 35-8, then beat the Chargers 34-0, and then lost to the Colts in Indianapolis 25-17.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2000 beat the Bears 41-0, then beat the Lions 31-10, and then lost at home to the Jets 21-17.

The Jacksonville Jaguars in 2000 beat the Browns 48-0, then beat the Cardinals 44-10, and then lost 17-14 to the Bengals in Cincinnati.

The St. Louis Rams in 2001 beat the Dolphins 42-10, then beat the Lions 35-0, and then beat the Giants at home 15-14 (but didn't cover as a 14.5 point favorite).

The Kansas City Chiefs in 2002 beat the Cardinals 49-0, then beat the Rams 49-10, and then lost to the Broncos in Denver, 31-24.

The Green Bay Packers in 2003 beat the Raiders 41-7, then beat the Broncos 31-3, and then beat the Seahawks in a wild card playoff game at home in overtime 33-27 (but didn't cover as a 6.5 point favorite).

The Indianapolis Colts in 2004 beat the Bears 41-10, then beat the Lions 41-9, and then beat the Titans at home 51-24 (this game got out of hand because the frightened Titans kept trying onside kicks and none of them worked....they also faked a punt and that didn't work either).

The Seattle Seahawks in 2005 beat the Eagles 42-0, then beat the 49ers 41-3, and then beat the Titans in Tennessee 28-24 (but didn't cover as a 7-point favorite).

The Chicago Bears in 2006 beat the Seahawks 37-6, then beat the Bills 40-7, and then beat the Cardinals in Arizona 24-23 (but didn't cover as a 13-point favorite....."They are who we thought they were!")

The Dallas Cowboys in 2007 beat the Bears 34-10, then beat the Rams 35-7, and then beat the Bills in Buffalo 25-24 (but didn't cover as an 11-point favorite).

The Baltimore Ravens in 2008 beat the Eagles 36-7, then beat the Bengals 34-3, and then beat the Redskins at home 24-10 (as a 6.5-point favorite).

The Minnesota Vikings in 2009 beat the Seahawks 35-9, then beat the Bears 36-10, and then lost to the Cardinals in Arizona 30-17 (as a 3-point favorite).

The Indianapolis Colts in 2009 beat the Titans 31-9, then beat the Rams 42-6, and then beat the 49ers at home 18-14 (but didn't cover as a 13-point favorite).

The Baltimore Ravens in 2009 beat the Lions 48-3, then beat the Bears 31-7, and then lost in Pittsburgh 23-20 (pushing as a 3-point underdog).

The New England Patriots in 2009 beat the Titans 59-0, then beat the Buccaneers 35-7, and then beat the Dolphins 27-17 (but didn't cover as an 11-point favorite).

The Green Bay Packers in 2009 beat the Seahawks 48-10, then beat the Cardinals 33-7, then returned to Arizona one week later for a wild card playoff game and lost 51-45 in overtime (as a 2.5-point favorite).

An absolutely terrible 3-14-1 ATS for eighteen teams that each looked unstoppable following two straight dominant performances on both sides of the football.  Seven of them lost outright despite 17 of the 18 being favored to win.  Most worrisome for Pats backers tonight is the fact that the six teams asked to cover a double-digit line following two lopsided wins went 1-5 ATS, the only cover coming courtesy of the 2004 Titans who tried a bunch of trick plays against Peyton Manning and the Colts and all it got them was a 27-point thumping.  Those 5 double-digit favorites that failed to get the money missed covering by an average of 11 points per game, and three of the five had to erase a 4th quarter deficit just to win by one point!

5 of the 18 teams listed above appeared in a nationally televised playoff game, Monday night game, or Sunday night game following their back-to-back blowout wins.  Together they crumbled under the spotlight where they went 2-3 SU 0-5 ATS, with the only wins coming when the Cowboys kicked a 53-yard field goal as time expired in Buffalo and when Al Harris picked one off in overtime for the Packers and returned it for a score in the playoffs against Seattle.

The Patriots allowed the Jets to score just 3 points two weeks ago while the Bears could only score 7 last Sunday.  Of the 18 teams listed above, 10 of them allowed no more than 10 points combined in their two big wins.  Together they went 1-8-1 ATS the following week.  Of those ten, eight of them scored 40 points or more in at least one of the two big wins.  Those eight flopped badly the following week, going 4-4 SU & 0-7-1 ATS.

I know it's easy for some of you to dismiss all of this because the Packers have injuries, or you're certain that Matt Flynn won't get anything done, or you're simply in awe of the Patriots and at this point can't fathom seeing them score less than 30 points in a game, but understand that nearly every favorite on that list looked like it had everything going for it, yet most of them stumbled badly just when the betting public least expected it.  And nearly every underdog on that list looked like nothing more than the next victim, but instead nearly all of them geared themselves up for the challenge and came out to play.  It is an amateur mistake to expect these 2010 Patriots, great as they are and well-coached as they are, to simply roll to another lopsided win.  History tells us that no matter how much they may want to, they likely won't have enough left in the proverbial tank mentally or physically to dominate to this extent for the third week in a row.  And let's face it, no team can pull off what the Patriots just did without a little luck.  It seems like we haven't seen the Patriots make a wrong move, get victimized by a bad call, or catch a bad bounce since the first half against the Lions on Thanksgiving.  You figure they'll have to sustain that good luck to cover this 14-point line, and that's asking a LOT considering they've already played ten charmed quarters of football in a row.

Nice info but thier are some other factors to consider.

Flynn is being thrust into possibly the worst situation for him and he couldn't put a TD on the board last week at Detroit.

Belicek and Brady are relentless and should continue to be so by wearing out a good D.

Not committing to Pats side but no way I could put money on GB.

Interesting.....but for me, there's only one play if not for the Patriots.  A Pass.  The Patriots are a mighty team.  GB has a decent enough defense against medicore teams, but the Pats have beaten good teams.  The past 3 weeks they've started to click.  They do not slow down their machine and they truly relish in totally dominating an opponent.  The only way it is close is if the Packers can keep up, because they won't slow them down.  It would have been a task even with Rodgers, and without him they will Flounder.  The Pats will cover the 14.5.  They will cover 17.5.  Bet with confidence, or Pass on the game.

Hey Bator along the lines of the buy low sell high theory, wouldn't you think today is a great day to bet against Atlanta and take the points with Seattle and there 12th man?? Would like to hear your thoughts?
tsw says:

And that's why the spread is what it is.  If you read the info, it's not even about GB. It's about a team coming off back to back blowouts. Surely most of the teams in this situation were "relentless" and pretty damn good themselves, yet failed to cover.

BigNiner says:

No. The line is merelya reflection of the one-side money coming in on the Pats.

This one is a no-brainer for me. You guys always try and overthink these games but Flynn v.s. Brady... if this line were 24 i wouldn't trust taking the Pack. I think NE proved last week that they're not a team that has a let down and they don't take weeks off. With Belichick an Brady against a Rookie Qb this game has blowout written all over it. And if Vegas wanted all action on NE this line wouldve been 11 or 12. This line is right where it should be. NE 34 GB 14.

I know what he posted and understand the trend. So the fact that a backup QB coming off a poor showing in a very winable game is now facing the best in the league should be ignored? I interjected my view on top of his because each situation is different. It's your money.

great research and not to say I don't believe in trends and such but if the line doesn't move, that would concern me more.  The weather may play a factor in keeping the game close  as running game will need to be exploited as well as the fact your qb is second string.  That being said  i still need to go Pats. small
MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:41PM

All of us are fickle in our perecptions of teams from week to week in the NFL.  Exactly one week ago at this hour, prior to the letdown game at Ford Field and the Rodgers concussion, no one in all the land was suggesting that the Packers were playing poorly.  The sentiment was very much the opposite.  How quickly the stock drops!

MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:36PM

Why would they want that?  The Patriots scare the penny-pinching weasels in Vegas, always have.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:37PM

Well, if you feel the line is right where it should be, then why do you believe you're getting any value here?

MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:22PM

Yes, yes it is.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:25PM

Yes, that's right, off 31-0 and 34-7 wins the Chargers will be substantial road favorites in frigid Cincinnati next Sunday.  Say what you want about the lousy Bengals - they're not lousy as home dogs!

MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:26PM

MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:32PM

Look, if you can't get past "Flynn vs. Brady" then you definetely haven't overthought this one.  On September 30, 2001, people weren't "overthinking" "Brady vs. Manning" and they lost that bet by 45 points!

Colts 44 Patriots 13 (Tom Brady's first career start 9/30/01 - the Pats were a 14-point dog)

MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:33PM

Then why are they only 9-4 ATS and not 13-0 ATS?  And what happened in Cleveland?

MrBator says:
12/19/10 11:50AM

Exactly.  There was no war of words this week with the current opponent.  There was no Rex Ryan declaring that his team was the better team.  There was no media hype going on and on about how the Jets defense is the one defense Tom Brady can't seem to solve.  There was no talk about the Patriots being "limited" in their passing game by having to play in "Bears weather."  There was plenty of fuel added to the fire prior to facing the Jets and Bears.  What fuel is their here?  No trash talk from the Packers.  No silly hype in the media about the Patriots being vulnerable for one reason or another.  No, instead the opponent's Pro Bowl quarterback is injured and an unknown is starting in his place.  I don't care how great the Patriots are capable of playing, no team can get as FIRED UP as New England was the last two weeks when your opponent has shown you nothing but respect and you're facing them without their most dangerous weapon.  Add to that the fact that no fan or talking head is doubting you in the slightest.  Instead the consensus is that you're magnificent in every way, your farts smell like flowers, and the mints on your pillows are already waiting for you in your hotel rooms in Dallas.

When this happens, complacency creeps in.  It's human nature.  The Patriots are better than most NFL teams are about avoiding the plague of complacency, but even if they're just a little complacent, which they HAVE to be, then this line will be very, very tough to cover and keep covered.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 11:52AM

Darn it!  I really needed this one, too!  Fuck me!

MrBator says:
12/19/10 11:57AM

I don't care if God Himself spoke to me in the middle of the night and gave me the play - I am not letting anyone clip me for 4 points on a game.  You have to leave Green Bay +10 off that ticket.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 11:59AM

This actually happened to me once.  The play lost.  Even God's not perfect.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:01PM

Don't do what?

MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:03PM

The line, whether it be 14, 14.5, or even 15.5 doesn't seem to be discouraging too many people from laying the points in this game (as you can see by reading through this thread).

MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:06PM

Speaking on behalf of all Packer +14 backers, I don't think more than a very small number of us think this is a "can't miss" bet just because we're taking 14 or 15 points.  I certainly don't think that.  Have you talked yourself into believing that the oddsmakers have succeeded in drawing the majority of the action on Green Bay?

MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:08PM

Great to see you, PistolPete!

MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:16PM

But they're not superhuman.  A football team, no matter how talented or smartly-coached, has to collectiely raise its game to a dizzying level to do what the Patriots have done in their last 2.5 games.  No NFL team can sustain this level of excellence for long.  You don't have to take my word for it, just check out the pointspread history I laid out already.  The Patriots are a cut above the rest for keeping the engine running at full throttle last Sunday in Chicago after blitzing the Lions in the second half, 35-7, and then completely squashing the Jets, 45-3.  Hats off to them for keeping it going in the snowstorm in Chicago.  It was truly amazing to watch them do that to the 9-3 Bears.  But expecting them to do blow out a fourth straight team after doing all that is not only asking too much, it's actually unfair to ask it of them, especially when the opponent is more worthy of a twinge of sympathy from them than anger and fire.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:19PM

Started to click?    Really, because I think they've been clicking their asses off!  In fact, I'm worried I'll go deaf from all of the clicking noises.  Seriously, how much more clicking do you think an NFL team can do in consecutive weeks??

MrBator says:
12/19/10 12:21PM

I like Matt Flynn, and his days at LSU,  but I don't think HC of the Pack put him in a good position to win last week.  I watched that game, and to expect an inexperienced QB to throw across the middle of the field in the "red zone" might be asking for too much.
This INT is what broke the back of the Pack and Flynn's confidence IMHO.

Flynn is a smart QB with skills, and his day may come, but he has the added difficulty right now of a non-existent Running Game to support his workload.

This is either a play on the PATS... or no play at all.

Good Write Up!  The only issue I have with this is that as much as there are certainly no locks in sports, I think it is fair to assume that New England won't lose the game.  Given that, Green Bay could be in a holding on situation for the cover and that could put the spread in a coin toss situation.

Great write up Bator alot of good points.  Obviously because of my avatar some people might bash me for playing the devils advocate but the only "issue" or thing everyone might wanna consider is although your stats were spot on if you take a look at the Patriots first 8 games of '07 although they did allow more than 7 pts in almost all those games they still beat them all by a minimum of 17 points.  We can all agree the results of the last two games aren't representative of the pats def (nyj anemic offense, snowstorm in chi) and although they have gotten better its safe to say their offense has been the more consistent group similar to '07.  For the record this game is prob a no play for me but all i'm sayin is the patriots covered 6 times after b2b blowouts in 07 and won every game by more then the point spread today only diff between your stats and these is they allowed more points then your original guidelines of pts for/pts allowed.  I'm not saying your wrong, your stats and line of reasoning are valid, or that I'm right just that it seems like a no play imo because the pats covering a big pt spread after two blow outs isn't as unlikely as you think.  good luck to everyone.

For whatever reason the masses of fans think that if a team wins big 2 weeks in a row that means they'll win big the next week, "it's so engrained in people to think this way", when your info and history "proves" the opposite.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Pack are in this game with a chance to win at the end.

Wow Ít´s  IT´S AMAZING HOW MR.BATOR CHANGE THE POINT OF VIEW OF EVERY GAME...I´M NOT AN EXPERT BUT SOMEYIMES THE TREND JUST SAY NOTHING ABOUT THE PRESENT AND I THINK IT´S THE TIME....DO YOU THINK LIKE YOU SAID THAT AS GREEN BAY HAD THE TIME TO PREPARE TO THIS GAME, NE HAS TOO.

THREE SIMPLE FACTS:

  • THE GAME IS IN NE..
  • GB IS TOTALLY DESTROY AND WITHOUT HIS QB (DID YOU WATCHED THE LAST GAME VS DETROIT)
  • THE NE OFFENSE IS GETTING BETTER EACH GAME
  • LOCK HOMEFIELD AD FOR PLAYOFF IF THE WIN.

I RESPECT MR. BATOR TREND AS ALWAYS BUT THIS IS NOT THE CASE.

In this case i think It's all about running back Ben-Jarvus Green- Ellis. Ellis has come through for the Pats repeatedly, contributing 184 carries for 786 yards and 11 rushing TD's. The opponent is always thinking pass but in these cold weather games like Sunday against the Packer, expect Ellis to be a huge factor in this game.

Also Deion Branch has rejoined the Patriots and picked up where he left off.. In 9 games Branch has 648 yards and 5 TD's. He always comes through for Brady and that's why Bellichick brought him back. How can we forget Wes Welker. Welker has caught over 100 balls in a season and I still can't figure out why the Dolphins let him go. Welker has 80 receptions for 787 yards and 7 TD's. These receivers are very reliable and that's why Bellichick has them in New England.

So for me... NE -13,5 BIG..

Good luck guys!!!!

This is good food for thought today.  Good research in the first post, what is hard to tell with that information is in the third game were the teams that had won two in a row playing against a team that was not starting its first string QB.  Also, if we look back at the start of 2007 the Patriots covered today's spread 8 weeks in a row.  Admittedly, the books got wise and NE covered only two the rest of the regular season.  I agree with what you are saying, but in my opinion tough to bet against NE in this spot at home, with questions of whether GB can score 14

Once again the information is legendary from MrBator.  We should all be so lucky to know half of this shit whether it helps out or not.  GL with that one, being a Michigan man I can't cheer against Brady.

I Hope it hits, if it don't you know how it is, 2 and 3 posts posters will come out of the woodwork.....it's unfortunate

gl Bator your streak of bad luck when starting a thread ends tonight as most people who will get crushed will chase with the Patriots. 12/19/10 01:36PM

MrBator says:
12/19/10 01:40PM

You're right.  This one is even more extreme.  Most of the teams that got walloped by the favorites on my list were punching bags to begin with.  The Patriots annihilated the 9-2 Jets and the 9-3 Bears.  Imagine how much it took out of them to outscore those two teams by a combined 81-10.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 01:42PM

Whoa, when did this Patriots defense morph into the '85 Bears?

MrBator says:
12/19/10 01:49PM

There's not much he can do here.  He'll make sure his team doesn't get too overconfident against a QB with virtually no experience, but aside from that, all he can do is gameplan as usual.  Belichick is a smart guy.  He knows that barking at his team will not work this week.  How could he anyways, after such recent excelllence?  All he wants is to make sure his team doesn't become so sure of themselves that they get sloppy and blow the whole game.  Belichick has been around long enough that he doesn't need my statistics to inform him that this is a vulnerable spot for his team.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 01:53PM

That has already been accounted for in the pointspread.....by 7 points!  The Patriots were going to be a 6.5-point favorite with Aaron Rodgers starting.  With him ruled out, the line was re-set at -13.5.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 02:09PM

     Good post.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 02:13PM

And all I'm just sayin' is that on September 30, 2001, no one outside the Patriots organization thought Tom Brady was anything either (except maybe his family and friends).

MrBator says:
12/19/10 02:01PM

And it's partly on the backs of all those December wins of years past that the Patriots have built up their well-deserved reputation, and that's partly why they're a big, fat 14-point favorite today.

Think about it, Pats backers - given the nearly decade-long history of excellence in the Brady/Belichick Era, and given the last few weeks of going beyond even the the Patriots' own benchmark for excellence, do you actually believe that the oddsmakers are giving you any sliver of value today???  No, they're not.  In fact they're bending over for the privilege of betting on the Patriots this week.  The oddsmakers can't physically stop the Patriots from going out tonight and winning this game by more than 14 points, but they can definetely make sure you pay an unreasonable theoretical price for betting that it will happen.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 02:07PM

Really?  Matt Flynn replacing Aaron Rodgers and you think the difference in the spread is at most 1.5 points?  Wow.  Well anyways, the early line with Rodgers playing had New England -6.5.  The official Matt Flynn line came out yesterday at -13.5.

chilitokid says:

chilitokid says:
12/19/10 01:16PM
Maybe what nurich left out is that since Mankins has returned the performance of the Patriots has stepped up a notch or two. As mentioned earlier the loss to Cleveland was the perfect wakeup call and a reminder if you don't bring your A-game every game it will be a long day. I asked myself what the spread would be if Rodgers was playing today? He's not worth more than a point or point and a half max. I also wonder how many times we'll hear Clay Matthew's name make a big play.....it definitely won't be as much as you might think.

This game reminds me of the 2007 game at home against the Iggles when AJ Feely started in place of McNabb. Flynn should be much better with a weeks worth of starter reps. LOL, no way I am laying 14. You have to respect the Pats home dominance, I don't see any value with the Pack ML, especially with McCarthy on the other sideline. Although, you could look at like this though: Do you think the Pats will lose at home again this year? If you do, then I guess you bet it?  Does that make sense? I'm high.

kaponofor3 says:
12/19/10 06:51PM
Another interesting thing to think of in this game is that even if, according to Vegas, Matt Flynn is worth a 7 point adjustment in the line. OK, well let's look at the Packers on the road this year (who are still in a situation where they should be motivated to play hard as their backs are against the wall as it relates to their division race with Chicago in which they only have a chance if they win out basically):

Loss @ DET by 4
Loss @ ATL by 3
Win @ MIN by 28
Win @ NYJ by 9
Loss @ WAS by 3
Loss @ CHI by 3
Win @ PHI by 7

Even if you take every single road loss they've had an add 7 points to it (Vegas' value of Flynn), you still have GB covering a 14 point line. You know what that tells me? Green Bay competes on the road as an entire team. They may not come out with the win, but Green Bay's biggest loss of the entire year, home or road, was by 4 points last week in DET. Even if you give another seven to that figure by adding in Flynn, you are getting at least 3 points of value on this line based on the entire season's results. There is significant value in this line IMO

Grinder360 says:
12/19/10 03:14PM
You all realize that the Patriots have the 2nd worst pass defense in the NFL (only to Houston).  Matt Flynn was put in a tough position last week against a hungry division rival.  Give him a week to prep and an offensive line that works to protect him and he will put up a few scores.

Just off the top of my head I know Shaun Hill threw for almost 300 yards against them, Colt McCoy game manged their victory by making no huge mistakes, hell even Ryan Fitzpatrick had a good game with 250 yards and a couple scores.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that the Packers defense brings their A game and Flynn throws a couple of scores.

I think we are looking at a 24-17 type of game. Pats won't lose this game, but they have absolutely no reason to run it up, especially ending the season with 2 division rivals with revenge games.  Make no mistake about it Buffalo and Miami are better than they were earlier this season and I predict one of those teams get the outright win.  But for tonight the Pats win a close one.

MrBator you have convinced me with your stats and a little research myself that the Packers are a great value spot here.

Bellicek and Brady are not immune to situations like this, it just applied to them last season and the failed to cover the next week.

In 2007 they were 8-0 ATS , then went 2-9 ATS in their remaining games, it appears Belicek did let up, or, more accurately, became overvalued on the spread after those big wins when the luck-based plays were going their way and once overvalued and no longer recieveing all the luck-based plays could not cover the inflated lines, sounds like this weeks game.

10-7 in the 2nd quarter .

nice start for u

MrBator says:

As sequences of events go, that was a really BAD one.

MrBator says:

Why do defenders always seem to drop what should be Brady INT's?
MrBator says:
12/19/10 09:02PM
Geezuz Christ, 3rd and long is like a layup for Brady.
MrBator says:
12/19/10 08:43PM

Yes, 5.5.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 08:49PM

The Titans tried three onside kicks and one fake punt.  None of it worked.  The Colts enjoyed very short fields all day long and killed them, 51-24.  That was in 2004.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 08:07PM

Come on now.  The man's played in four Super Bowls!

MrBator says:
12/19/10 08:22PM

Green Bay +14.5 -110

Green Bay +13 +118

Green Bay +6.5 +282

Green Bay moneyline ranging from +800 to +880 (but mostly +800)

MrBator says:
12/19/10 08:23PM

michaelpaul1, I like you, and I would never dream of posting something like that in one of your threads.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 08:24PM

A total of 48.  Very LARGE for me.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 08:32PM
I'm glad they recovered it, obviously, but I don't like the onside kick attempt.  It sends a message of inferiority, like the Titans in 2004 against the Colts.
MrBator says:
12/19/10 08:38PM

You're right.  Okay, cool then!

MrBator says:

My vote for #1 post in this thread.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 09:47PM

Absolutely not.  The value in every side bet in this game was on Green Bay - first quarter, first half, moneyline - everything.  The second half line will be value in favor of Green Bay as well.  I strongly recommend that no one lay the points with New England at the half.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 09:48PM

You know me up and down, inside and out.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 11:46PM

Actually I'm hanging my head as I lament another beautiful moneyline that's now worthless.

+800

I will never forget how that game ended.  Was that really the ending to a professional football game?  I know Flynn's new and all, but you don't even see high school games end with such confusion with the game 11 yards away from being won.  Luckyass Patriots escaped with a game they hardly deserved.

MrBator says:
12/19/10 11:57PM

It's cool, no hard feelings at all.  Thanks for the post, very gentleman-like.  No need for any of us to wind up hating one another over these ballgames.  The ballgames come and go 365 days a year but we still have to live with each other here on Covers, right?  So let's try to get along better and we'll all have a much better time, I promise you.

MrBator says:
12/20/10 12:19AM

I just finished watching the entirety of the highlights of the Eagles/Giants game on Sportscenter's "The Blitz" and it made me want to take time out this week to attend the next local Gambler's Anonymous meeting here in Vegas just to lend support and be there to listen for those who need it.  Of course, I'm not going to actually do that becaue I'm very selfish with my time but watching those highlights made me want to.

What a brutalicious beat for Giants backers everywhere.  You just know that a few unlucky souls bet money they absolutely, positively could not afford to lose on that game.  Those poor guys are all done, all done.  Basketcases for life.

Mods,

Archive this thread. That's an order.

It is PhD level analysis in terms of capping.

If every capper used the argumentation Bator used in this thread to cap a game, I truly believe Vegas/Bookies/International sportbooks would treat Covers.com the same way the Federal Government is currently treating Wikileaks.

With the wisdom of Jimmy the Greek (and that's being kind to Jimmy) and the wit of Conan O'Brien, Bator shot down the influx of haters easier than pretty little ducks in a row with his special edition Red Ryder BB gun right in time for Christmas.

I hope all the haters get a crate at their door from the Grinch. The contents: a leg lamp in a fishnet stocking. That's about all you'll be able to afford for the holidays if you faded him like you proclaimed. (and that's about as close as you'll get to the real thing walking the strip with your pockets turned inside-out after tonight).

Bator Assange, we salute you!!!!!

Just think of all those poor Giants FANS sitting in thaT STADIUM WATCHING their home team blow 21 point for NFC East crown with 8:00 to go by not getting onside kicks and PUNK ASS Mesean Jackson doing the endzone too too. That is much more DEMORALIZING than losing MONEY. Don't have to see whole SEASON decimate in front of your very own eyes after thinking you clinched going to playoffs.  That has to be one of the biggest comebacks of all time.

Once again props to MrGator and all his supporters/backers. Other than BigTony no one else who backed NE and made it personal was man enough to admit just how dead on MrBator was in his vision. To be on the other side of an opinion that was so well thought out and presented is one thing; to attack someone who is sharing that foresight with everyone is assine and reflects badly on them. Great game by the Pack and young Matt Flynn. Without that mental meltdown at the end the Pack may very well have pulled out a win.

It took alot of balls to go with GB tonight but its like you envisioned this game before it already happened. Good luck with your future picks and I look forward to tailing you in the future. I have no action on the game.  I probably would've taken the Jets but they just wouldn't shut up and I would never bet on a team that's taunting the quietly vindictive Patriots.

MrBator says:
01/16/11 11:07AM

Isn't that clearly stated in post #623 on page 25?  Just kidding.  Yes, it's true, I have the Bears -10.

MrBator says:
01/16/11 01:10AM

That's pretty much how I feel.  And I laid -10 -105 with the Bears.  Bodio's thread on the Bears game should be bumped to the top, not this old thread from weeks ago.

MrBator says:
12/20/10 06:31AM

The good news is......the Bengals are indeed a play!

The bad news is.......the Bengals, unfortunately, are the play.

MrBator says:
01/16/11 11:37AM

Again, I'll gladly refer you to bodio's outstanding "Bears -10" thread where you can find eye-opening information on Matt Hasselbeck's awful performances following any game in which he achieved a passer rating of over 100.

MrBator says:
01/16/11 06:13PM
Jets +10 -118 and +9.5 +107 look fabulous.  My Jets moneyline action.......uh, doesn't exist (shit).  Jets +9.5 in the 2nd half looks great.  Bears/Pats teasers are doomed.

That stat is not even remotely true, just off the top of my head, both Sanchez and Flacco covered their 1st game in the playoffs and that goes back just a few years.

As I'm pretty sure did Jake Delhome, highly likely there are more, that's just off my memory.

As we wait on the man.

I just cant help thinking of the lesson he taught on media and perception of the public last year. The moral of the story just has me thinking of a well rested Atlanta team and the Pack on a short week....or am I just an idiot with blatant homerism and the Pack are in sync and rhyme even on a short traveled week  after smacking the philly line and come out blazing ?

IS the Ray Rice deal true ? I might have to change that play to Pit. I'm having some Monday morning quarterback issues that may require liquor

Mr. Bator....I know this is an older thread pertaining to the NE/GB game, but just wanted to hear your thoughts on tonight's MNF game between ATL and NO.  ATL is coming off two blowouts (although they did give up 18 to Seattle, the last TD came halfway through the 4th quarter when the game was out of hand) where they scored at least 30 pts (on the road I might add) and now are facing the World Champs who they have already beat, at home on MNF.  Do you think this is a let down spot similar to NE last week and SD this week?  I mean ATL has to be feeling pretty confident right now, and the Saints are coming off a bad loss might be playing like the wounded animal instead of the World Champs.  Just wanted to hear your thoughts.  You seem to have your head on straight.
CaliCash says:
12/20/10 05:54PM

Awesome call.  I wish I had seen this before I blew my load on the Pats.

Dear Mr. Bator

I'm going to leave this thread alone now, but just wanted to say thanks Mr. Bator.  Although I didn't catch this in time for the NE/GB game, I was able to use the information for this NYJ/NE game and was able to cash very nicely.  I know you were iffy on the Jets because of all their talking (I was as well), but in the end I trusted the trend and human complacency to come through, and luckily it did.  I was also able to use this on SD/CIN earlier in the season, and used the concept for Oak/KC and Pit/Bal, although Pitts won it at the end, it was looking good for a while nonetheless.  I'll always remember to look for this trend now, and thanks again for bringing it to light.

Love,

CaliCash,

LOL, jk with the love stuff, but I really do love that you posted the trend here Bator, thanks again bro.

Not sure what you are talking about, I had the Pack and so did many others on here.  Explain why anyone else would be laughed out of covers?  A 14-15 point spread against a team with a winning record is extremely difficult and not unusual for the dog to cover.  I think your overstating this and understimating how many people were on the Pack.

I, also, did not see your thread. NO ONE else wrote up a post and so adamantly defended his position in the face of vicious personal attacks by non-believers. Many of us who were Pack backers prior to reading MrBators write-up then added significantly to our bets. Others were saved money by staying away. Others who held firm in own counsel did so quitly or attacked the messenger. The point is: the information was shared and for that many of us are very grateful.

Once thank you, MrBator. Great write-up, great game, great win

Credit where credit is due for MrBator:

This thread amazes me!  Sadly (for me), after not hitting my one and only play on Sunday, I couldn't pull the trigger on this game because I'm a die-hard Packer fan.. It's just almost impossible for me to bet on or against them.  However, I did read this thread and was amazed at the information provided.

Great capping job!  I wish I could have cashed in along with you.  Very few posters here take the time to do what you did here and I thank you for it.

Everything points to the Jets covering this game. This is a game that is Jets or no play. Bator is taking no play as am I because the Pats are just too hot right now, winning 5 of their last 6 in blowouts, and the Jets have really pissed the Pats off with all their talking. That's a big no no.

SquarePlay says:
01/16/11 01:02PM

You are missing that you don't need to bet EVERY game.
