Lions, Cubs are up there.  Clippers maybe?  Hate to say it but Leafs are in the talk as well.  Here's my top 5
1. Cubs
2. Lions
3. Pirates
4. Clippers
5. Leafs

Honorable mentions go to the cleveland cavaliers and cleveland browns .. bobcats are a fairly new franchise so can't put them in the talks yet

with their insane popularity -- do the cubs and knicks belong on this list?  I would argue no...

Knicks maybe not even though the last 10/12 years or so have been a major disappointment for their fans ....you'd expect a lot better from such a big club.

Cubs most certainly belong on the list

Since you're asking for the worst franchises in sports history, I'm not sure how you can include the Toronto Maple Leafs with the 13 Stanley Cups they've won.

If you had asked for the worst franchises over the last 40 years, then you have a point by including the Leafs.

(*Sorry, not familiar enough with hockey to rate their franchises.)

1. Pirates. These douchebags have a profitable business model to the tune of $20-$30 million a year, yet never use it to improve their team. Even the Expos tried harder, and were more successful!

2. Toronto Raptors. Raptors fans actually show up to games, only to be abused by management. It's a good formula for success - fans that show up anyway, and an owner who doesn't want to spend money.

3. Detroit Lions. Up until recent years, they never really tried to win, despite a loyal fan base. Barry Sanders was so furious with Lions' management that he just got up and left the game. How often do you see that happen? Think about all those years Barry carried them - they never really signed other guys to help the team win. Nope, they were content to go 5-11 and run Barry into the ground.

4 & 5: Golden State Warriors and Oakland A's. Both have strong fanbases, but both have owners that shit on them. The A's don't push for a new stadium, and don't sign talent. Hell, they even let Gio Gonzalez walk. And the Warriors used to occasionally try, but if you reexamine the Chris Mullin era, they didn't really try to win it all then either. At their best, the Warriors pieced together teams around Chris Mullin that were just good enough to make the playoffs. And after that - poof - nada!

Cubs don't belong on this list because management has tried to win, has produced an excellent gameday experience, and honors its former players. Clippers don't belong here because they largely fell victim to one bad GM, and even made the playoffs in 2006 despite that horrible GM. Sterling is a douchebag, but the Clippers have tried harder than the Warriors to be competitive.

Exactly... You are talking about HISTORY.

The Detroit Lions were bad in the 2000's that is it. They currently have one of the best teams in the NFL. With the sports most popular player (Madden cover anyone?). In the 90s they were one of the top teams year in year out, and once again had one of the most popular players in the that decade. They won multiple titles before the super bowl was invented. So to have them on the list is just short sited compared to teams that have been around for 3+ decades and haven't won anything.

1- Washington Nationals/Expos - 0 world series in 43 years. + never been to a title game + Very bad teams for a long time.

2- Clippers 0 nba titles + never been to a title game + very bad teams a majority of years

3- Phoenix Coyotes/Winn. Jets - 0 Stanley cups + never been to cup finals

4- Seattle Mariners - 0 world series in 35 years + never been world series

5- St. Louis Blues - 0 stanley cups / 40 years since last appearance

1- Toronto Maple Leafs anything run by MLSE is a disaster. Leafs, Raptors and TFC. Just look at the past 10 years and there's no doubt. Toronto is easily the worst sports city in terms of winning teams.

after number 1 there isn't anyone that can compare to the shame those teams have brought to the city of Toronto.

NBA Basketball> Toronto Raptors LA Clippers

MLB Baseball> Seattle Mariners

NFL Football> Detroit Lions

NHL Hockey> Phoenix Coyotes

The above sports franchises have been ranked by SI as the 'worst' in their perspective sports history. based solely on: never reaching the NBA finals, never reaching the MLB world series, never reaching the Super Bowl, never reaching the Stanley Cup finals. in franchise history. although their are others who qualify, non are more consistent, or have the lack of attendence over the past 20 years, these are the epitome of losers.

and NO the Cubs are not losers, they have won, regardless of how long ago, your talking historical, zero, never, as for the Mapleleafs, the same holds true, they possess many a Stanley Cups from the distant past, far from losers in the NHL, but as the saying goes, "what have you done for your fans lately" a cliché to identify today's NFL Detroit Lions, and NBA LA Clippers, both teams that have reconstructed their franchises to be present day winners, but as of yet, have won 'nothing' other than the revenues of their 'season' ticket holders..

switching from team to 'city' Is there a city who carries a MLB,NFL,NBA,NHL franchise that has NEVER won a championship in either of the four major sports? off the top of my head I can't think of one, even excluding the NHL. were talking about the 32 sport cities in the USA and Toronto....
CopperRilee says:

Any list that includes the Maple Leafs or the Lions are a joke. I believe the question was in sports history, not worst franchises in the last 40 years. Lions won championships pre Super Bowl era, and you can't say "in the history of sports" and then discount 1/3 of that sports history. The Maple Leafs have 13 Stanley cups,,,,How is this a bad franchise? It seems to me that people are being short sighted and only looking at the last 40 years in sports.

Don't watch hockey, but my list would be.

1. Browns

2. Cavs

3. Pirates

4. Lions

5. Clippers

The Lions and Clippers have a chance to get off this list in the next decade with the teams they have, but the Browns and Pirates don't seem like they will ever want to be off the list aslong as they make money they don't care if they win, and it's sad because the Browns have some of the most awesome fans there are.

St Louis Browns....once sent their players decks of playing cards with the team logo as a Christmas present

Seattle Pilots

Washington Seantors "2.0" - an attempt at the Senators to make a comeback but the franchise moved to Texas and became the Texas Rangers........I think the same thing happened before and that team became the Twinkies

Kansas City Athletics .....in essence were a major league farm team for the Yankees....someone on the KCA's would go 3 for 4 and be on the Yankees a few days later.

Although they were truely one of the most colorful franchises in sports history I think that everybody else is a distant #2 behind...

The Oakland/California Seals/Golden Seals/ Cleveland Barons.

I Highly recommend a book called "Shorthanded - The Untold Story of the Seals - Hockeys Most Colorful Team" for ANY and EVERY hockey fan (especially old school cats like me who remember that period in the NHL).

It's written by Brad Kurtzberg and you can find how to order by using google to find the book.

Off the ice they were horrible having had 7 ownership groups in its 9 year lifespan in two cities. On the ice they were not very good either... but very entertaining as a team.

The book is a large 8 x 11 inches and about 320 pages (softcover)... The first 30 odd pages gives you an overview of this franchise and what happened. The rest of the book is comprised of stories from over 110 former players, owners, coaches and staff.

The stories told by these guys is worth the weight of the book in gold to me.

If you LOVE hockey... NHL history and old school stories from the actual players... ya gotta read this book.

NO... I am NOT a salesman... I just love the book.

They were the definition of a BAD FRANCHISE and TEAM.

I see alot of people have the CUBS at the top of their list.... Please let me give you alittle history lesson. The CUBS have actually won TWO World Series (1907 & 1908) both vs Detroit Tigers!!! Also the CUBS have appearred in 10 World Series! I understand this was a century ago but there are some teams that have NEVER even played in a Championship Game EVER!!!!!

You're gonna love the players stories... makes you feel like you are seeing it happen with your own eyes. Great insight of what it was like to be a player in the NHL back in those days... and COMPLETELY unedited and raw. Enjoy (as I still do).

I remember the WHITE skates the Seals used to wear....

I'd also add the Colorado Rockies (hockey) to the list. Also, the Washington Capitals were brutal for years....
Skubishack says:
05/10/12 08:13PM

The Colorado Rockie started as the KC Scouts and eventually moved to NJ where they have won 3 Stanley Cups and are currently in the East Conference Finals... Not bad I'd say. The Caps started as the worst NHL team ever and for years were nothing special... but for the last 10 years they have been a decent team... but I am surprised that the franchise lasted this long in D.C. without relocating.

The white on the Seals skates was actually PAINT and players complained that they weighed a ton by seasons end... Ha,ha,ha.

Geeezus the Cubs. No disrespect to the faithful but why in the hell do people pay for a ticket to watch that joke of a team. It's impressive. Beer sun and conversation I understand but holy shit. They field that crap year after year.

Seattle man myself. I will never pay to go and watch those jerkoffs try and play baseball. It's embarrassing.

Seahawks too. What a laugher.
