Ron Artest, on-purpose or an accident?

Just wanted to hear people’s opinions on the incident that happened in the Lakers vs Thunder game last night. The game itself was a classic double over-time thriller in which Kobe showed once again that as long as he is capable of running the Lakers will never go away. He forced Russell Westbrook into a 3-22 shooting night while himself had a 9 point surge in the 4th and then 6 more in the 2nd OT to make sure his team goes home a winner. He had 26 points in total.

But all of this was overshadowed by what Meta World Peace (Ron Artest) did with a minute left in the first half. After driving in for a strong finish over Durant and Ibaka, Meta started to trump his chest and threw a vicious elbow right behind James Hardens ear. Harden went down on the floor and left the game with what appears to be a concussion. He will now have to go through an extensive list of tests and workouts before he can get back on the floor again. With the NBA’s new concussion rules in effect it could be some time into the playoffs when the talented Harden could return to the Thunder lineup.

I watched the replay so many times and I regretfully have to say that Artest must have felt that someone was by his side. Was the momentum and emotions he has at that moment too much for him to stop his elbow in time or was it intentional? The reality is that we will never know the answer for sure so we could only speculate. A suspension will definitely follow and it could not have come at a worse time for the Lakers. Meta has been playing exceptionally well in April and they could use him in the playoffs. The league will probably announce the punishment it will implement for the incident but me personally I hope it is not too drastic as we have to realize these are huge men who are competitive and emotional…this doesn’t justify violence but I will say again we cannot know for sure what was going through his head at the time so it could have been just an unfortunate accident.

First, let's talk about my wager:
I had Thunder -1. It was a good play up until late 4th quarter when OKC let the Fakers right back in the game (ugh.. basketball). I should have checked the Lakers schedule before I placed my bet, and should have known that LA would put a good effort in their final home game. 

Now Artest:
He knew what he was doing. He knew Harden was right there, and when telecast showed the replay over & over, u see while he (Artest) was celebrating with his fist pumping on his chest, that elbow came out quickly. Bam!! It was like "get the fuck outta my way" elbow. There probably was some smack talk between Artest and Harden during the game, which led to the elbow. They're both accounted for the incident, but Artest should have known better and I'll bet analyze my wager cautiously before I place it on the Lakers during the 1st round.

I just dont see him not realizing that someone was at his side, it had to be a get out the way elbow and also Artest doesnt guard Harden so I dont see how they would start talking smack to each other...either way this is a major blow for the Lakers in their playoff run...lets see what kind of fine/suspension the league hands down on him...shame...u must admit though, Kobe is an animal

The elbow didn't look like a part of the post-dunk celebration.

A true "unintentional elbow" = MWP turning around as soon as he hit harden

The celebration was supposed to be him pounding his chest (Like a gorilla sort of)
If you watch the video, only his right hand pounds his chest, his left hand elevates higher and doesn't even come close to pounding his chest. His left elbow is clearly raised up to elbow anyone close by.

yea you know if he naturally reacted for exaplme as me or you would i think...instantly tend to Harden and apologize to his teammates I dont even think a suspension would be imposed...still would have probably left the game but ehhh

Listen Guys, they need to suspend that CRAZY MOTHERFUCKA (RON ARTEST) remainder of season & 5 games in playoffs!!! That was a VICIOUS ELBOW!!! I just hope Harden is ok.

If it was inadvertent, you think he would have turned around to at least acknowledge it and show some concern for Harden! His sorry ass should be suspended for the rest of the year, it would have been less harmful if he manned up toe to to and just punched him in the face! Friggin coward!

Ron Artest once responded to a question in an interview by saying he was really thankful that god didn't create man to lose his teeth at 18 or 20. He also once told a story about his buddy getting stabbed in the heart by a picnic table leg in a pick up game in an interview after a playoff game. He went into the stands during a basketball game and started a fight with a fan. He asked Rick Carlisle for time off from professional basketball to work on his rap album. The only way I'll agree he didn't throw that elbow on purpose is if you claim insanity. Either way the guy deserves the rest of his life to pursue his full time rap career.

If you view the man in total, throughout his career, it's obvious that Metta suffers from some serious behavioral disorders. I'm NOT a professional, but I know a lot about mental health issues. His intense rage boils over...sometimes it's years between outbursts. But it happens over and over again because 1. He hasn't addressed the underlying CAUSE of his anger and 2. He's remains in the same highly-charged, physically competitive profession. All he's managed to do is suppress that anger for periods of time. It's still there, and it will erupt again at some point in the future unless he makes drastic changes in his life. Often the root cause of such anger is sublimated self-loathing.

Seems to me to be somewhere in between. When he started pounding his chest I dont think he was planning on elbowing hardin in the head but he sees hardin out of the corner of his eye and for a split second doesnt realize the consequences of his actions being caught up in the moment with adrenaline of the game. Hes guilty of something but not it being completely premeditated. I would compare it to the difference of manslaughter and murder. Manslaughter is you get caught up in the moment vs. murder where you know what you are doing. Hes a dumbass for sure but I dont think it was completely malicious.

Lets shift the topic a bit and since everyone thinks he should be suspended what do you feel an appropriate suspension would be for this? You have to keep in mind that this is the playoffs so in my eyes there should be some leniency from the league for the Lakers as a team I think...

a fragrant technical foul, game ejection, he threw an elbow, like they've been doing in the NBA since it's conception in 1948... is it wrong? yes, is it unsportsmanlike? absolutely, is it part of the game? yes, that's why they have a foul line. SHOULD he be suspended? yes, for one game, anything more would be considered a David Stern example to gradually make the NBA 'soft' and softer as time prevails. had this happened in the NCAA the rule is clear, "fragrant foul, game ejection" there is NO game suspension attached to throwing an elbow in college roundball..case closed- although, after review, it's clear the elbow was intentional, but not intended to inflict injury

Regarding Cocky24 guys I agree, we are having a discussion, when did this become a racial conversation even if we were talking about a game in South Central...anyway I like the points sports network made but also the NBA is the highest level of professional basketball so I do think that 2-3 games would be appropriate as these athletes set an example for the college ball players to come

I just dont agree that this was 100% done with malicious intent you know? I watched it probably more times than anybody, I think it is a case of Ron Artest not actually realizing that he is three times bigger and stronger than an average human being and not understanding the magnitude of injury that he is capable of inflicting on a person. I do think it was intentional but like a get out of my way elbow but again the guy doesn't realize how strong he actually is...

I use to box on a non-pro level and getting hit in the back of the head (Rabbit Punch) with gloves will fuck you up! He got full velocity & extension on that elbow!! It was vicious!!

Are you kidding me. Ron World Peace Artest is criminal. That elbow was totally well thought out. He meant that all the way. He is a thug who does not belong in the league. To play is a privilege. He lost that privilege when he went in the stands in Chicago. He should be suspended the rest of this year. Maybe for the rest of his life. What if he loses it like that again and kills some boby. Watched the elbow about twenty times. That was a "get out of my way" elbow. Artest is a
