Highest QB Rating in NFL History: Tony Romo?

Yeah, I couldn’t believe it either.

Of all the QBs in NFL history with at least 5 seasons as a starter no one has a higher QB rating than Tony Romo.

I knew he was better than his haters would have us think, but I wouldn’t even have thought he’d be in the top 10.

Playoff wins or not, clutch or not, rings or not that’s still pretty impressive for a guy that a lot of people seem to think sucks.

Knowing this stat I don’t think any objective person can pen Dallas’s lack of success getting to and playing in the postseason all on him anymore.

When I think of Tony Romo, I think of Fantasy Football - great stats when he has a good matchup, mediocre stats when he plays big games or against good Defenses. But when I think if real football, he just does not rise to the top. He always seems to be on the losing side of a big game.

I would not lay that all of him, as Dallas over the last 10 years seems to fade when the lgihts get bright. But, Dallas has had as much talent as almost anyone over the last 5 seasons, and they are still mediocre. But, a truly great QB will do enough to win big games. Brady, Brees, Manning, Manning, Rodgers, Ben all won big games with similar levels of talent on the rest of the team.

He has to make a huge run in the playoffs, and at least get to the Big Game, before anyone will consider him an elite QB. Otherwise, he will just be a great Fantasy Football QB in my eyes...

It still takes a whole team to win and this Dallas coach has cost them a few games also!!

Why's the stat "utter shit" ? Top 3 QB ratings this year: Rodgers, Brees, Brady. Romo is slightly behind, but still the last QB above 100 for the season. He's 4k yds, 65%, 30/10. The dude can slang it.
StraightShooter says:

What’s not to understand? You think Romo only cares about money (even though he went back into a game with a broken rib and a punctured lung) and “banging some celeb pie” (even though he was recently married).

PunchOut says:

The coaching staff, the defense, and the offensive line is what is keeping Romo from being called elite. Doug Free who is a good lineman but was exposed against the Vikings in a playoff loss. Jared Allan embarrassed the hell out of him. Kyle Kosier who is exposed against bull rushes. Phil Costa was third string but since Andre Gurode was fat, out of shape, slow, and wanted big money, he was cut and Costa was promoted to starter. Leonard Davis became to slow against fast pass rushes, and was to slow to catch up on the screen. Davis ranks as one of the most penalized players in the nfl, he was cut because of declining play and salary cap issues. Mark Colombo was embarrassed in the playoff game against the Vikings, and then he was cut. Montrae Holland has only started 14 games with the cowboys. Tyron Smith is a rookie phenom, Bill Nagy is a rookie who is on IR, Kevin Kowalski is a rookie undrafted free agent who has zero starts and now Derrick Dockery who was just signed, has a problem with penalties and has failed to meet expectations since entering the league. Although he is the 2nd ranked QB in NFL history, his offensive line chokes under pressure. People are quick to label Romo a choker but fail to mention his choking o-line. The choking defense and the choking offensive line are the reasons I believe dallas will lose Sunday to the giants. The defense and offensive line always choke in pressure situations. People need to study the game before they speak. Notice drew brees took his record breaking picture with his offensive line.

Problem with Dallas is their defense.

That and Romo not playing.

straightshooter-

You are exactly right- Romo isn't the problem- i have been arguing with people for years- his offensive line is terrible and this year the defensive coordinator is terrible- i don't know what he has to do to get people to believe in him but i am tired of hearing he sucks

Yes, Dallas has always found a way to lose, and costing us money! Most Importanly, when the game means the most! The month of December? NYG or Dallas this week? These two does not exist this week. Tony Romo, he reminds me Of Alex Smith.

Just a reminder, GM will not resign QB Tony ROmo. Lean on Dallas or NGY's? Stay away!

What cracks me up the most is the Cowboy fans that think they should cut Romo.  The Cowboys could cut Romo and the chances of them finding a better QB in the next decade are slim to nil.

There are at least a dozen things inhibiting the Cowboy’s playoff success more than Romo, but because he is the QB and the average fan is fairly ignorant he continues to get the blame.

I would add “an egomaniacal owner with a God complex” to that equation.

QB Rating is an absolutely meaningless stat.

Its like talking about a win/loss record for a pitcher in baseball.

StraightShooter says:
12/30/11 11:23PM

For the guys saying that passer rating is a bullshit stat, here are the top 10 all time:

1.     Aaron Rodgers

2.     Tony Romo

3.     Steve Young

4.     Tom Brady

5.     Philip Rivers

6.     Peyton Manning

7.     Kurt Warner

8.     Drew Brees

9.     Joe Montana

10.  Ben Roethlisberger

Not very many scrubs on that list.

Whats his "meaningful game" QBR ? Playoffs and top notch teams during the regugular season? I'm assuming that drops off like a rock.....
scalabrine says:

"Costly fuck-ups" is not a category when determining the QB rating although it should be.
scalabrine says:

Not true at all...

A small segment of Cowboy fans maybe but not MOST by any means...

This team has a lot more problems than just Romo performing in the clutch.

It's certainly less than the number of fans who want to find a replacement for Sanchez and that is not even the majority.
dl36 says:

my guess is that they will create an entirely new QB rating system for tebow to show how great he is....one that vick or cunningham would have been off the chart on back in the day...
Crusher13 says:
12/31/11 04:19AM
Kinda ironic dl that u bring up Tebow's NAME

If only ROMO had "some" of TEBOW'S strengths and resume. Like perhaps leadership skills, earned respect from fellow teamates, and being a better "example" too.

Facts are Straight, from the very FIRST pass Romo threw, which btw, was intercepted by a NYG DL and returned for a pick 6 in a Monday night game at Texas stadium after Drew Bledsoe was pulled by the TUNA, to this day,  TONY ROMO's play as QB for  AMERICA'S TEAM,  has been slightly better than average for the teams success.

Individual stats, dating pretty hot tabloid type chicks, being an awesome scratch golfer but as far as leading Cowboys to playoff success  One playoff win especially with that wonderful QB rating

Romo is much much better than all the trash that Jerry has tried at QB since Troy left ( Quincy Carter, Ryan leaf, Chad hutchinson, Testaverde, Bledsoe) that we really should appreciate how much better ROMO is  BUT.............here in the Metroplex, these hardcore diehard fans (which I'm not obviously) WON"t settle for anything less than SB titles much less getting there

There are such  high expectations for ROMO because he is the QB that unless he reaches it, people (including the likes of Emmitt AND DEION) will NEVER believe (ah, remember TT references) in ROMO..............NEVER until HE proves himself, which if you look at his track record, undrafted FA out of eastern illinois, and has led ? any teams to any kind of championships, he will ALWAYS be attached with all those LABELS

This SUNDAY will be a GOLDEN opportunity for TONY ROMO to show his teamates, fans, Jerry Jones, and all his naysayers to STFU. Do I think he can do it? Using history as a guideline, I would be a FOOL to bet on it but hey, I can only HOPE that Romo has "it" somewhere deep inside him to lead the Cowboys to an NFC East division title. I  know if they do win, my bro's company drycleaning co gets to "do their jerseys" for another game.  Hopefully 2 if Romo can "win", I mean "lead" Cowboys to only their 2nd playoff win since Troy retired
StraightShooter says:
12/31/11 04:30AM

No idea, but the only QBs this season with a better QBR or passer rating than Romo are Rodgers, Brees, and Brady.

StraightShooter says:
12/31/11 04:38AM

I did NOT post “most cowboy fans think they should cut Romo.”

Dallas lost that game because Terrance Newman can't cover or tackle.....if he tackles the Giants tightend when the score was still 0-0 it would of had the Giants punting and it would have been a completely different game
StraightShooter says:

If the Cowboys miss the playoffs, it’s not on Romo regardless of how he plays today, IMO.

When you have statistically the 4th best QB in the NFL that should be enough to get your team to the postseason if everyone else is doing their jobs.  However, the Cowboys obviously have quite a few people halfassing it.

Romo could have a 24-32, 325 yard, 3 TD, no turnover game and if the Cowboys lose many will still blame him.

StraightShooter says:
01/01/12 10:30AM

A great owner would realize he sucks as a GM and hire someone else that gave his team a better chance of winning.

StraightShooter says:
01/01/12 11:34PM

29/37, 289 yards, 2 TDs,1 INT (which led to no points), and a 106 passer rating.

Romo played a good game, but because Dallas’s terrible secondary got torched Romo will get the blame from most people.

gfoss59 says:

I guess we know what the value of the passer rating is. (I like ESPN's QBR a lot better.) Actually, I like Romo okay -- but he doesn't have the clutch gene. Check out his playoff stats for comparison.

Best playoff passer rating (5 games or more)? Easy, Aaron Rodgers. Of course, he's just getting started. Bart Starr, the most under-rated quarterback in history, is second.

_keyser_soze_ says:
12/31/11 09:18PM

Who cares what happened on his first pass attempt or what happened in his first season.  I'm pretty sure Troy Aikman was 1-15 (or Dallas was anyway) in HIS first season.

Football is a TEAM game.  If it weren't, then Dan Marino would have three or four Superbowl rings, and Doug Williams and Trent Dilfer wouldn't have ANY.

Romo HAS made some costly mistakes in his career, and some of them have come in big games.  However...

Blaming Romo for the loss in Seattle when it was pouring rain and he was holding for a field goal (that he had LED his team down the field IN Seattle for by the way) and even after the ball slipped through his hands, he had the balls to run for a first down, and if the kicker could have thrown a simple block - he would have had the first down, and Dallas would have won that game...) is laughable.

Yes, Tony threw a costly INT at the end of the game against the Giants when Dallas was 13-3 - but again, did he cost his team the game?  No.  What happened in THAT game was that for the first time ALL year, Dallas and Wade Phillips (or Jerry Jones) decided to START Marion Barber instead of bringing him in off the bench - and so while Barber ran wild in the first half, he was DONE in the second half.  Couple that with mediocre play from the Dallas D - and Dallas didn't deserve to win.

Also, in that week 17 game against Philly - the win and you're in game - Romo was awful.  So was the ENTIRE team.  It is about coaching, the they weren't prepared.

I'm not a Romo apologist.  He's not an elite QB - but he's CLEARLY a very good one.  He's never played behind a great OLine (like Eli has for example) and he's only played for an above average coach for the first couple years of his career.  Sorry, but Tom Brady wouldn't have won dick playing for Wade Phillips.  Neither would Aaron Rodgers.

Romo is overrated in some quarters.  He's also underrated in others - specifically by Giants fans who think Eli is actually a much better QB than Romo.  Um, he isn't.  Romo has put up better stats overall - but Eli rides that four game stretch were he rode an incredible D, a GREAT run game, and some good play by Eli to win a title.  Anyone who thinks Eli is better than Tony because of the Superbowl also has to think that Dilfer is better than Marino.  Which is fine.  It's wrong.  But hey, knock yourself out.

Tony's regular season stats are clearly better than Eli's.  Tony doesn't turn the ball over as much as Eli.  Tony has a higher YPA than Eli so he's not checking down all the time.  And Tony is EVERY bit as good in the fourth quarter as Eli.

Period.  End of Story.  The END.

Jerry Jones the GM

Raulerson you are DEAD WRONG about pick 6 I think Strahan scored  it even thought may have not been his 1st pass

Keysore- Looks like ELI played and LED his team "better" (no INT or FUMBLES) to the NFC East Division title tonite

Hope nobody out there was FOOLISH enough to bet with Romo led Cowboys

Jerry Jones is the poison on this team. He is an egotistical control freak. I've been a Cowboys fan all of my life and couldn't be more disgusted with them at this point. He needs to let the coaching staff go and and he can take over as head coach next year and see what it's all about. If this happened the following year he would sit his old wrinkled butt up in his luxury box and let the people he paid do their jobs. Owner/GM is a joke. Stick to being an owner.

O2Raulerson says:

Definitely calling bullshit here...Romo's first NFL pass was actually earlier in the season against Houston and his 2nd one was a TD to TO. He did have 2 INTs against the Giants after he was replaced at halftime, but none of them were for a pick 6, I was there. You don't think the team respects a guy who comes back and plays with 2 fractured ribs and a punctured lung and wins a game, against the #2 seed in the NFC? I wonder what the defensive stats are in December since 2006 when he took over. Romo is an elite QB for sure, he needs a defense because he obviously can't stop them. Romo is playing at an all time high, Cowboys ML +150
PunchOut says:

I agree, jerry jones has to be fired by himself. Dallas needs to cut 20 players in the offseason but I seriously doubt it will happen. They do have 20 players with expiring contracts though. Most of those players, if not all, should be cut from the team. I have a feeling that old man jerry is going to sign Anthony Spencer to a multi year, multi million dollar contract, and he doesn’t even deserve it. Allan Ball has a 1 year contract extension, and he sucks. Then they signed Orlando Scandrick to a multi year, multi million dollar contract in the preseason? I have no idea why? He sucks and anyone can look good in the preseason. On top of that, they have kyle kosar under contract for three years, he is having acl/mcl surgery and he sucks. Jerry signed Doug free to a huge deal also and he has been exposed in every must win game. They entire secondary has to go except mike jenkins for right now. Jerry jones has been awful as a GM. As GM he has put together the worst o-line and secondary in cowboys history and since he is only 69 years old, cowboys fans will suffer for many more years. Notice all the Romo haters are all silent. They have no argument now that I presented all the evidence to shut down their stupid media driven claims about romo.

Giants 31-14

Romo SACKED GAMEOVER

Final Score 31-14 Giants

Romo 29/37 289 yards 2 TD’s

Dallas offensive line CHOKED and gave up 5 hurries and let Romo get sacked 6 times and the Dallas defense CHOKED up 437 yards and 30+ points again.

The O-line and defense choked in 07 against the Giants 21-17. The O-line and defense choked in 08 against the Eagles 6-44. The O-line and defense choked against the Vikings in 3-34 in 2010 and on Sunday against the Giants the O-line and defense CHOKED again 31-14. The season ends every year the same way in must win games for Dallas. Everyone needs to bet against them like i do in a must win game of the season. The kicker, defense, and offensive line, ALWAYS CHOKE. The O-line and defense will choke again next season.
