Random fact: Abraham Lincoln had a very vivid premonition of his death. Ten days before he was assassinated he dreamt he was in the East Wing of the White House where people were mourning. When he asked a soldier who had died, he was told "The President".
Pretty wild isn't it? Makes you want to follow your gut when betting says this observer. And avoid plays titled: Our American Cousin.
Betting wise I was a timid loser yesterday. Three plays I fell in love with, including Stanford, BYU and California and refused to pull the trigger. Instead, the trigger was pinned back on me.
Rule no. 39: Scared money seldomly makes money.

As some of you might remember, I did this every week in the college basketball forum.
Obviously this is the first week, so everything is level. As the season progresses, each team gets ranked by stats, injuries, wins, losses, etc, etc, etc. Basically, week one is a VERY brief summary of what each team is working with after camp, and what to expect, for the most part, in the first week of action.
*Stats used this week are from the 2008 season unless otherwise noted.
**As the season begins, stats will be from this, the 2009 year.
***Stock for all teams is level before the season starts.
1. West Virginia 0-0, (0-0), Stock: LEVEL
2008 final record: 9-4, (5-2)
Last game: (2008): W 31-30 in Meineke Car Care Bowl vs. North Carolina
Next game: Sept. 5 vs. Liberty
Strong Point: The Mountaineers return the best running back in the Big East and a Heisman candidate in Noel Devine. The junior Devine rushed for 1,289 yards and four touchdowns. He helped WVU to the 2nd best running game in the Big East in 2008.
Area of Improvement: The irreplaceable Pat White has graduated and WVU will be turning to senior signal caller Jarrett Brown. The problem is, Brown got just 30 attempts under center last year, passing for 114 yards, lacking experience.
Overall Analysis: West Virginia had a bend but don’t break defense last year, giving up just over 300 yards a game. The great news is t... [More]

WOW! This is the first time I've got to sit at home and clamor and yell football with you cats.
I've been to so many damn AAU circuits from Akron (LBJ skills) to Cleveland (King City Classic) to South Carolina (Peach Jam) and soo many more I couldn't bare to speak of because I'd run out of room and patience.
But now that I'm back home, and have been attending the past (and first) three days of Pittsburgh Panthers training camp, I guess it's time to break down the conference I know best for this season.
We'll start with the most polished terd, the Pittsburgh Panthers. Because let's face it, all you are doing is dusting off the best dingleberry with this, the worst of the BCS conferences.
I'm going to profile ONE TEAM A DAY, as these will get very long with quotes, misc info, stats, blah, blah, blah. Gotta go all out to gain the best advantage/perspective of what to expect and be prepared for this season.
(Order of how I VOTED in the 2009 preseason Big East poll)

RECORD: 9-4
BOWL GAME: Brute Sun Bowl L 3-0 vs. Oregon State
Total points/points against: 352/279
BEST WIN: West Virginia 19-14 @ Heinz Field
Turning point in season good/bad: The pinnacle awful moment came in the August 30th opener at Heinz Field in a 27-17 loss to Bowling Green. The Panthers boasted a 14-0 lead within one minute in the second quarter, but would be melted down to a three point advantage...

With Ralph Wallard off to Louisville to work under Rick Pitino--a great move by Wallard, who will be building that resume even higher to, more than likely, find a bigger, better HC job at a bigger conference--Holy Cross' head coaching seat is wide open.
Pitt assistant coach Tom Herrion, known best for pulling in Jermaine Dixon here, was the head coach at C of C and posted an 80-38 record there. While he will see more pay from Pitt, the Holy Cross job has to be quite tempting for a man like Herrion, who is licking his chops at getting back at the helm. Another HUGE reason this job seems like Herrions fit, is that Tom is a native of Oxford, MA. He'll be back home.
If Herrion leaves Pitt for HC, that benefits one team in large proportions, while the other team loses a pretty large piece in the recruiting puzzle.
I'm sure you can put the two teams in the appropriate slots.

Here it is, the toughest time of the year to come to grips with: The end of the college basketball season. Unfortunately I lost my first Big East game of year (to date) on the biggest of stages, the Elite Eight. What is worse is being there on press row knowing you can't do ANYTHING to stop Scottie Reynolds from driving the length of the floor in just 5.5 seconds. I knew the minute that play was setup by Dante, Pitt was in t-r-o-u-b-l-e.

------------------------Big East Game of Year, Period.--------------------------
Tyrell Biggs -2
I dedicate the pick to the Panthers senior power forward, because this is entirely up to him, if he plans on making the 15-20 minutes he will be in tonight worth solid defense, more than six rebounds and more than five points. When DeJuan gets in foul trouble WHEN, WHEN, WHEN he gets in foul trouble, it will be entirely on Biggs' shoulders to take care of Cunningham and Dwayne Anderson tonight. A group effort defensively and Biggs stepping up should take care of what I call: "the hottest team in the NCAA Tournament," the Villanova Wildcats.
Preview coming up in a second.

This is something I do every day with a different team on the upstart, with teams that range from Connecticut to Robert Morris for a VERY LOW PAYING blog lost out there in the internet. I figure this stuff would get more play and be of better use here.
Enjoy and hope this helps you with this team in the future!
Team: Northern Iowa
Conference/Standing: 1st Place in Missouri Valley Conference
Record: 17-6 (11-1)
Key Wins: 59-51 @ Southern Illinois, 69-66 @ Creighton, 61-58 @ Bradley, 59-55 vs. Illinois State
Key Losses: 84-85 vs. Indiana State (F/2OT), 77-84 @ Illinois-Chicago
Tournament Projection: NCAA
The Scoop
It seems every year Northern Iowa is one of a cluster of teams in the exciting Missouri Valley Conference that finds their names on the bracket buster list. This year they may very well be on the very top of that list.
Riding an 11-game winning streak, something that has not been accomplished by a UNI team since the 1963-64 season, the Panthers are extremely hot, taking wins in three of the most difficult gyms in America, including Southern Illinois, Creighton and most recently, a three-point thriller at Peoria, Illinois to take down Bradley, sweeping them in the season series.
Northern Iowa is led by their vicious backcourt tandem of point guard Kwadzo Ahelegbe and shooting guard Ali Farokhmanesh. Between the two, Northern Iowa gets 21.7 points per game, with Ahelegbe chiming in with a solid as...

Awful recruits is your product.
Let's use Indiana's example of kids getting into so much trouble they are forced out, leaving the team with no scholarship players left.
Let's add coaches scarring programs prestige to the point where kids refuse to go there years after.
Add agents hovering over practices, bamboozling kids into leaving school early.
Add no more motivation in the classroom, which results in leaving early or just plain out flunking out.
Then bad behavior, only wanting a top-ten school or not going anywhere at all, lazy coaching staffs, leaving early despite grades or behavior, and just pure athlete laziness, and what do you get?
Kids that can't even hit free throws. Kids that cannot and will not play simple zone defenses. Kids that can't complete a simple give-and-go layup. Things that we used to take for granted, are now things that scholarship athletes can't even accomplish (outside of the top-ten world).
Let's step away from the UNC's, the Michigan State's, the Pitt's of the world, and focus on the mid-majors and average big conference teams.
Is it possible that a team like Belmont can allow an 18-0 run to start a second half, after already being up by 18 points at halftime?
Is it possible that a Big East team like South Florida can lose to a team like Oral Roberts by double-digits? Never having the lead for the games entirity?
It is possibl...

Has anybody noticed this incredible drop-off in talent over the past few years, especially this year?
So many unders at ridiculous low numbers, teams with appalling offensive/defensive stats, and coaches that shouldn't be manning a cash register at a Piggly Wiggly, let alone coaching a Division-1 basketball team (white and black).
There are so many products to blame, including everybodys favorite, the NCAA-to-NBA one-year rule, a rule which allows your Kevin Durants and Michael Beasleys to jump to the league after one year of eligible academia level. But what about other variables like Europe, and what I feel is the worst factor, agents?
I've watched the Duquesne basketball program rise up from the dead last year, only to be ripped right back up thanks to the departing of Guard Kojo Mensah and Center Shawn James, who was just one triple-double away from setting an NCAA record.
Why did these two leave so early? STEVE CRONIN. A dastardly agent with an infamous background of ripping teams apart. He was a good friend of Duquesne coach Ron Everhart, when Everhart was in charge of Northeastern several years ago. This just shows you how far a friendship can take you in the business world.
Mensah had no right forgoing his senior year at Duquesne, nor did James. Two kids that desperately needed to spruce up their game, and wouldn't be apart of a 10th round in the NBA draft, had their been one. Inste...

A little late but so be-it.
To say that DeJuan Blair and the Pitt Panther basketball team wouldn’t like to make school history would be a lie before the basketball gods.
In fact, this year, anything less than a National Championship almost seems like failure according to the big man.
“At my house I have a picture of Detroit (2009 National Championship site), and I look at it everyday and say, I want to be there,” said Blair, Pitt’s sophomore center. “I want to play in front of all those people, all eyes on me and this team. We don’t think it can be done, more than we know that it can with all the hard work we’ve put in so far. That’s what we want.”
Blair, three other veterans and a crop of young, sparking talent will headline a hungry, all-or-nothing Panthers squad this year, a team that finished well above many predictions a year ago, winning the Big East Tournament with an overall record of 27-10.

Figured I'd start a blog after the events I witnessed here in Tampa Bay last night. Enjoy!
Do you remember four years ago?
The man with the worst approval ratings since Richard Nixon won the hearts of Americans for a second term.
And while he has done far less damage than a Bush could accomplish, Dave Wannstedt, in that same year, found himself elected—in his first term—as the Pittsburgh Panthers leader, their coach.
Having a kid who grew up along the shores of the Allegheny River and right on the outskirts of Pittsburgh seemed the ideal man to hire, after previous head coach Walt Harris’s had led Pitt to five straight Bowl games.
Insert Good ole’ yinser Dave…no bowl games, not even close.
