I seriously believe the Nets are throwing games on purpose

That's the only logical explanation I can come up with to explain how awful they are.  How is it possible to lose to Golden State by thirty when they've got only nine guys and three of them are from the D-League?  And no I did not take the Nets tonight but I'm still bitter about losing with them earlier this week.  I honestly believe this team could be on the take though.

I've backed NJ three times this year. Wanna know which games?

I was at the game last night.

The NETS are just that bad.

0 for 2 from the free throw line a few times

They play just like a team with 3 wins

Love that comment about being owned by a Russian.  I'm not one to cry fix, but with a Russian oligarch in the mix, you never know what happens behind the scenes.  Fuck trying to dream up marketing schemes for extra ticket sales; if an NBA owner can make just one million dollars net for every game, that's 82 mil nice and easy at the end of the season.  Far easier than trying to put out ticket promos and whatnot.

back in the Jordan days the bulls were fav by 20+ against shit teams.  They were a covering machine one year that sent many bookies broke.

Iam sure some of the older guys remember.

I'll provide my two cents on this whether they are throwing games since they are my team and I've followed them since the days of Drazen.

Believe it or not, they are not intentionally throwing games. There is no collective effort to go out and lose every night. And you know what, as as a fan, I couldn't support this collapse more. Why? Because a team has to hit rock bottom before it has any shot at glory. Who the hell cares if the Nets end the season with 3 wins, if that means John Wall. I know there is only a 25% chance, but 25% is still 25%. Look at what Duncan has meant to this franchise. There will likely, NEVER be a greater Spur than him.

Many of the posters on here don't remember how unspeakably bad the Spurs were before they got Tim Duncan. Or how bad the expansion Grizzlies were. Now, despite the Spurs record that year being several multiples of the Nets current win total, THAT was a team that DID throw games. Even though they threw, they still weren't as bad as the Grizzlies (14 wins and .171 winning %) or the Celts (15 wins .183 winning %). That the Nets are THIS much worse than an expansion team banned from getting #1 picks at the time blows me away. How bad were the Grizz? Listen to some of the players on that roster:

Bryant Reeves (They used to call him Big Country...They should have called him Big Man-Breasts because that was the only thing the fans remember about him)

Anthony Avent (With the apropos initials of 'AA', meetings you and your kid will find yourself at after sitting through a series of their games)

Benoit Benjamin (Benjamin? THIS is the where the word for hundred dollar bills came from. Not from Franklin. He stole so many of these from the team even the GM's aspirins got a headache)

Blue Edwards (Couldn't shoot a basketball but is currently shooting ping pong balls from his mouth as part of the Blue Man Group)

Byron Scott (He'll hoot and hollar about how great his Laker teams were hoping you'd forget you'd need his last name in toilet tissue to help you figure out why you dumped money on their season tickets)
My point? The expansion Grizzlies team was top 3 worst team I've ever seen play and this Nets team is worse.

Well what's the main problem? There is a collective apathy and lack of pride among modern day athletes, especially when the times turn sour. And it doesn't get any more sour than what the Nets are experiencing.

I think the mentality on this team for the majority is, 'well if he doesn't give a shit about winning, why should I care.'

In addition, this roster is a TERRIBLE one with no bench to speak of.

Who are the main culprits?

#1 Devin Harris - during the 0-18 losing streak he was trying. Not anymore as evidenced by his most recent lines. His last three games 11, 10, and last night an unspeakable 4 pts. Not to mention his shot selection which has resulted in a 37.8 shooting % and that dips to 33% over the last 8 games. He wants out and is trying to subtly manufacture his exit by just doing enough to make himself seem valuable to another team. The fact that he is being mentioned in trade rumors is unconscionable since NO PLAYER would want to come here without a true PG, especially when you just got rid of one as talented (but unmotivated) as Devin. But he should be jettisoned since he's getting paid and has the look of "well if you surround me with this shit, how do you expect us to win?"

#2 CDR - Get this guy outta here. He gives post game interviews without a care in the world. He also has this wry smirk on his face of, "Yeah, I know how bad we are. You expect me to do something about it?" He's failing in the WORST of spots (right now) scoring significantly under his annual average in ALL of past nine games, 6,10,13,3,8,8,4,10. Not to mention, he's getting significant minutes in all these games and isn't even TRYING to SHOOT. If there is one guy truly dogging it, this is the guy. Doesn't make him the #1 culprit since he doesn't have near the talent of Harris.

#3 Courtney Lee - Needs to step it up big time. The role is there for him to be the go to guy on this team and loafs up and down the court at times almost unaware a game is being played. He could disappear into the locker room tunnel and you wouldn't notice. Shows flashes but we expected much more from him, especially on a team that is far worse than the Magic and went to a team that carved out a role for him to be a star.

#4 Terrence Williams - More worried about tweeting about what team he wants to play for than being an efficient contributor. Perfect example of the palpable apathy "Generation Me" player. First year in the league and believes HE will dictate where he should play. Guaranteed contracts folks. It's why we ALL role our ass out of bed every morning. We KNOW we will get the boot from our jobs if we just decided not to show up. At 6pts/3rebs, he is underperforming at best, a total bust and gone from the Nets in a year or two at worst.

#5 The Bench - What bench? This is where betting becomes the problem. When the unmotivated starters leave the floor, the less talented but more motivated bench guys provide a spark. Guys like Scalabrine and Mikki Moore and Lucious Harris and Anthony Johnson and Aaron Williams filled this role to perfection in the past. This bench? Feast your eyes and your on:

Kris Humphries
Jarvis Hayes
Kenyon Dooling
Trenton Hassel
Josh Boone

The fear of god will come into you when these guys come out on the floor.

As a kid I was a big Barry Sanders fan and started to like the Lions and followed their streak last year. What amazed me was the inability to even get a game into OT when they had 10 losses, 11 losses, 12 losses. I don't give a fuck if you play the game in a wheelchair...you should not lose a game by 35 points when you are 0-14 if you have any pride...I said to myself, there is no way a team in the modern era will allow themselves to live in infamy for all eternity with such an ignominious distinction of a winless season. I was dead wrong. That team gave up and this team appears to be headed down the same path with the same mentality. The problem:no TEAM pride and more interest in where THEY will end up as a player, leaving no chemistry or motivation to string together any form of winning streak.

Plus I like Kiki but he is not a head coach. He is a GM. He has NO head coaching experiece and a VERY brief run as an assistant coach with the Mavs. All in all, HE CAN'T COACH. Then he brings in Del Harris who WAS a good coach but clearly can't get any of the modern day NBA players to respond to his style. So to worsen the situation, the talent (outside of Devin) is not there, the effort is not there, and now that Frank is gone, the blueprint to win a game is up in flames.

My prediction: They have a REAL shot to break this record but they will probably tie it and at best get to 10 wins. This is only because there are SO MANY games, and many prospective opponents in bad situational spots with travel and injuries. In the NFL, it's a different story with just 16 games.

That means with 40 games left, you are looking at 7-33 AT BEST. I know that sounds like a lot but asking them to win 17.5% of their remaining games is reasonable when it's only 7 wins. That means you're gonna need a hell of a moneyline to take it (+470) and they will hit their ATS < 1/3 of the time at the current 13-29 pace. I know they will get a nice ATS run in the near future as the lines will bloat to unspeakable heights and teams simply will not be motivated to play them (i.e. they'll sneak in the spread).

Betting-wise, recognize you are putting your money on the worst team in the history of basketball with a bleak future for the current roster (i.e. a new owner who will likely clean house and the WORST arena in basketball right now in the IZOD center). So why win? You simply do not know when this team will show up. Apparently, the only team they are willing to get up for the Knicks so mark your calendars for March 6th. Outside of that, history is in the making.

I'm not familiar with the specifics with the lottery but you don't get more balls the further you are from the 2nd worst team? Is it maxed at 25% no matter how worse you are compared to the other teams? Seems a little unfair if so.
scalabrine says:
01/23/10 02:15PM

Maxed at 25% for the 1st pick yes...so you have to buck a collective 75% chance one of ALL the other teams will take your pick...it doesn't matter who...you only have a 3-1 shot no matter how bad you are...not to good...and the ewing draft (and the shaq draft) caused this

Kelly_Slater says:

The Number #1 Draft pick is not always face value.

Seems like the sleepers in later picks offer the best "hidden gems"

Granted I will gladly take the #1 Pick, Im just sayin<

Btw

I watched the Warriors and Maggette lay an ass whooping on the Nets last night and it was not a laydown. Tool Box LOPEZ had family in the House and EVERYONE was BOOING for him to miss the Freethrows. People screaming up by 20 reak talk.Dude in the crowd a few rows away from me was screaming CAL!!!!!!

He missed em both lol They were getting owned.

Maggette was running the court. He controlled the enitre game for 3 qtrs dishing to Curry who had a career high of 32! Maggette could have been in a slam dunk contest a few times. It was the best Ive seen there offense in years and I was there to watch.

Relatively young and relatively inexpensive = probability of more losses than wins

Expiring contracts = more cap space

Summer 2010 = Free agent frenzy

Jay Z = LeBron James

Do the math.

no better example than Colt McCoy who sat out the National Championship game due to a 'stinger' in his shoulder so he could be 'gettin paid' in June

What do you think the Nets season win total will land on?

I think they could break the record set by the 1972/73 76ers which was 9 - 73 and go down as the worst ever.
I wonder if any bookie has a prop bet on this?

scalabrine says:

9 or 10...and that's with an EXTREMELY optimistic outlook...

After tonight's absolute staining of the bed, this thread deserves serious bumpage.

Seriously, who in the hell is willing to back these bums? I wouldn't have taken them at 20 tonight, and sadly, this was a conservative number.  Them books are going to start hanging crooked spreads--perhaps higher than we've ever seen--for this Nets team.  I think the highest NBA spread I've ever seen is like 18 or 19.

rod_steel says:

We're going to see college like spreads with this team now. 20+ lines are certain

Rostos says:

Seriously, watch this space.........

As long as Kevin Martin is on that Kings roster, they will become just as bad as the nets.......U all heard it here 1st.....

That team was playing hard every night with a fatastic attitude.....That was overcoming all there lack of talent.....Now they are not putting in, very very dangerous signs....

ValueforRent says:

The Nets players should all have their phones wire-tapped by the FBI.  Wouldn't be surprised if members of the Gambino family were placing calls to these guys before the game to let them know how much they them to lose by.
