The bigger they are the harder they fall: One huge consideration NOBODY has mentioned ………………

Is that North Carolina has not faced ANY adversity throughout the entire tournament.  Besides LSU giving them a half-hearted scare for about 10 seconds, their five games so far have all been walks in the park.  Gonzaga, Oklahoma and Villanova were all double-digit blowouts that were never really in doubt.  On one hand it’s great that they’ve been so dominant and things have gone so swimmingly, however there’s also a negative to that.  The Tar Heels at no point have been forced to: make crucial free throws, get key defensive stops and rebounds, get big baskets when absolutely needed or any of the other little things required to win a close game.  They’re just so accustomed to going out, getting a big lead, having the opposition offer no resistance whatsoever, and then winning comfortably.  In sharp contrast, Michegan State has been playing close games throughout their improbable run.  The USC game was decided in the final two minutes and the Kansas game was decided in the final minute.  They also made big second half runs to pull away from Louisville and UConn when the game was still very much hanging in the balance. The Spartans have been in games that have come down to the final possessions where they had to execute and make big plays.  North Carolina hasn’t.  I guess that doesn’t matter to anybody though.

What happens tonight if say things do not go the same way for the Tar Heels as in previous cake walks?  How will they respond?  Will they be able to handle the pressure in a hostile environment?  UConn was another team that was supposedly very experienced, mature, able to handle the crowd, etc and they folded so hard when Michegan State made a big run in the second half.  For a team that was renowned for their size, strength, physicality and toughness, they played like complete bitches.  You could see it in their body language that they wanted no part of the Spartans when the going got tough and the crowd started roaring.  They quit.

I don’t care how many seniors Carolina has, how talented they are or how many NBA draft picks they have.  They can still get rattled and taken off their game if Michegan State plays inspired in front of they're home crowd.  All college players can get rattled when they’re down ten points and 50, 000+ fans are screaming and yelling at them.  These teams don’t have a Kobe Bryant or Dwayne Wade in their line-up who can just come in and effortlessly silence the masses on a whim with clutch bucket after bucket.  I’ve seen North Carolina get rattled this season against much lesser foes on the road, (Wake Forest, Maryland) so I know it can certainly happen tonight in this setting.

Secondly, you shouldn’t be shocked at all if North Carolina loses this game tonight.  If the Tar Heels do in fact go down, I’m sure you’ll hear tomorrow on ESPN about how it was a monumental upset.  That’s craziness because it wouldn’t be at all.  To me there would be nothing shocking at all about a Spartans victory.  They deserve to be in this game and are every bit as good as the Tar Heels are.  There’s no intimidation here and nothing major for them to overcome.  They have a great chance at winning this game PERIOD.  North Carolina does not walk on water.  Yes, the Tar Heels are playing their best basketball of the season right now.  But we’ve still seen them struggle this year so they aren’t invincible regardless of how indestructible/unbeatable they’ve looked in their last three games.

What makes North Carolina eight points better than Michegan State?

North Carolina has a slow, white, unathletic power forward.  So does Michegan State.

North Carolina has a jet quick point-guard with a tight handle that runs the show.  So does Michegan State.

North Carolina has athletic wings that can shoot.  So does Michegan State.

North Carolina has a good bench.  So does Michegan State.

North Carolina has intangibles.  Michegan State has better intangibles.

North Carolina has a head coach that looks like a used car salesman.  Oh wait, Michegan State doesn’t.

So then how is it possible for these two teams to be separated by this many points when the favorite isn’t noticeably bigger, stronger, quicker or more athletic than the opposition?

If you like betting on home dogs, Michegan State is the kind you practically dream about in your sleep at night.  All the elements are in place for an upset here.  The toughness and experience the Spartans have gained from playing in all these close games is invaluable.  They know how to respond in these sorts of situations and it will serve them extremely well in this title game.  Before the tournament started, I doubt the players on the team honestly believed they had a shot of getting anywhere close to as far as they have.  But over the course of the last couple weeks they’ve developed a newfound confidence that has made them believe in themselves.  The Spartans believe they can beat anybody and expect it to happen.  I don’t want to start gushing with hyperbole here but the heart, determination, desire and will of this team really is second to none.  Why bet against that?

I think all three of those teams would beat MSU, but that's just my opinion. I think this game comes down to if the crowd can get UNC rattled, the Spartans will prey on that...if not, could be over by half time

Great writeup Sir. Everyone acts  like  Michigan State is playing the Lakers tonight. LSU was tied with this team with 6 minutes to go. MSU has just beaten the #1 overall seed in the Tourney, and the mighty UConn, and has won "going away" in the 2nd half. These dudes continue to play with a chip on thier shoulder, and UNC just keeps getting pats on the backs. Let's hope UNC has accepted that they're already annoited, Champions by the press.  BOL to us.

Mich ST loses: NW, ohio St , Purdue, UNC! Maryland....I mean come on guys.  I do espect MSU...but UNC far better team.

MSU needs UNC to miss a lot of shots for them to come close to winning this game tonight.  DO NIT GET IT MIXED UP. If UNC plays good and you UNC plays good...UNC wins hands down.  They are going to need a very weak shooting clinic to go on from UNC and even more turnovers than usual.

i love how the fact that UNC hasn't had a close game yet is a bad thing for them... despite the fact that they have gone through (BY FAR) the toughest schedule in this tourney... nobody has beaten a foursome the caliber of LSU, Gonzaga, OU and Villanova... and they crushed all 4 of them...

good call, though!

And this is pertinent because???  Travis Walton will never play basketball competitively after this game.  It's all over for him after this.  He will kill himself to win this game.  You can't measure heart.

Nice underdog story you wrote up...but does Michigan State have ONE player who would start on UNC?  Do they have an ADVANTAGE ANYWHERE ON THE COURT?!?!?  Heart is nice, but I think UNC wants this one just as badly, they got beat last yr as favorites and they all came back for this moment tonight.  They are by FAR the superior team (no their measurables are not all that superior, they just have better BASKETBALL PLAYERS, which is convenient because this is a BASKETBALL GAME) and I think they win easy.  Michigan State won't come back, if UNC jumps out early turn out the lights.

OK,

Value, this is a very shallow way to look at a match up.

Because a team beats the crap out of everyone, thats why if the game WAS close, they won't be able to handle it?

How about in a close game I am not putting my money on a team that shots 69% from the line?  IF this was close, what would be the play call? drive to the bucket, get fouled.

Sorry, just because you think the Heels will fold under the pressure, I can't use that. That sounds like the "its in Mich" or they are laying for something.

You proved exactly why UNC will win big in your first paragraph. A) UNC has easily beaten everyone in the tourney, WHICH MEANS, they are REALLY, REALLY GOOD!

and B) MSU has survived some tough battles which would make me think that MSU is somewhat tired mentally and physically, whereas UNC is very well rested.

I also feel like there is just as much pressure on MSU to be the "home hero". If MSU gets down at any point they will start to become more and more desparate to get back in it. Once UNC stretches out a little lead, they will just start raining 3's again like they did all year. You can't defend that.

Seriously, if you don't think UNC got some "big game" experience going through the ACC then you are sadly mistaken.

UNC wins by 12-14 IMO

Spartans have been outmatched talent-wise in every game since the sweet 16.  However, the system, coaching, heart, and rebounding have kept them in this tournament, as well as making hte other team play a different style than they are used to.  This game will be played under 150, and the Spartans will keep it within eight the whole game.

It really is not a dumb comment.  Goran has, in my opinion, much better game for what they will both be in the NBA, career bench players.  Goran is a very good rebounder, has a good mid-range game, and can defend the post and out to the perimeter.  Hansbrough benefits from his system, and he doesn't have the game to be an NBA starter, let alone an all-star.  He throws himself at the basket, and draws fouls.  Throw him in there against Tim Duncan, Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett and he doesn't have a shot in hell.  Goran has everything a team would look for in a bench big man.  However, I am not going to argue that point, as it's clearly an opinion question.  But saying that that is ridiculous is just ignorant on your part, especially throwing in the all star portion

not a big college basketball fan but I need to put my 2 cents in here. First off I went 5/5 the other night and yesterday and ran 3 units into 29 in 2 days. I took UNC -4, UNC O 77 for the first half in that game, as 2 out of 3 games in my parlay. My other 3 bets where in the NBA but it was only a 3 game parlay which included those North Carolina locks.
ANyways... so here we go.. NAtional Championship game. We all remember why Ty Lawson, Tyler (the beast) Hansborough, Danny Green,.. came back. I beleive it was for this exact game here. ANd not the line in -7 UNC. Wait didn't they win by about 60 the last time they played these guys. Give me a break. I have this game at a double digit spread and all over UNC and I believe the same thing will happen that happened in the Villa game. First half domination by UNC and a nice cruise in the second half playing hard defense.
Be careful putting too much on Mich State. UNC is very talented
ValueforRent says:
04/06/09 02:59PM

If it was all about talent, Michigan State would have been gone a long time ago.  If it was all about talent the Spartans would have lost to USC, Louisville and UConn convincingly.  But they didn't.  I know teamwork, fundamentals, good coaching, playing together and sharing the ball are lost concepts in this era of college basketball, but the Spartans are able to pull it off effortlessly.

And why do you guys keep making it seem like these Michigan State players are complete nobodies with no athletic talents or skills whatsoever?  All these players were heavily recruited I'm sure out of high school.  Did you see that dunk last game vs. UConn.  That looked pretty athletic to me.

I'll lay like 500, 000 to 1 on that not happening.

The only all-star team he will ever be making is in Europe.  And there's nothing wrong with that either.  There's lots of money to be made playing in Spain or Italy.  I hope he does well there.

ValueforRent says:
04/06/09 04:15PM

Tyler will be playing in Europe full-time in less than five years.  I'm not hating on him, he plays very hard and is a great college player.  But his game will not translate to the NBA even in a back-up role.  If he tries all those pump-fakes in the pros he's going to get his shot blocked ten times a game.  He's not even half as good as somebody like Nick Collison.

respect your opinions but everything i bolded i think you know is a little off the truth. hansbrough slow and unathletic? he dominates college ball, i know as well as the next guy hes not gonna be a big factor (if a factor at all) in the nba but he had 25 and 11 last game against MSU and hes gonna get right around 20 and 10 again.

also michigan has a great guard but he's nowhere near lawson yet.

and lastly their 3 pt shooters on the wing won't hang with green and ellington, not too mention lawson is the best 3 pt shooter on the team. UNC is #2 in the nation in rebounding. it seems like you're bending everything to make MSU look good.

i will agree that izzo is a much better coach and i think that is the one thing really going for them, also the factor that they're coming off the big loss to UNC earlier in the season. i also think that the spartans bench is a little better than UNC. with all this said i won't be betting a side, i'm on the under. i think this game should be much closer than the last but i think the line is very respectable factoring in a 35 pt win earlier this season.

i think the +8 could be very obtainable and if it gets higher i might play the spartans for a little (or tease them up) i just think it will take a lot of things going right for them to win. BOL on the +8, obviously i'll be rooting for the UNC win tho.

and to the guy that said hansbrough will be an all star...

he's the next sean may and ellington will be nothing but another mccants.

Great analysis, VFR, but I  think you're discounting why UNC has been blowing out opponents. It's not like Gonzaga, Oklahoma and Villanova are a bunch of nobodies. They're all very, very talented and well coached teams.

And UNC has had close games all year.  They played VTech, Duke, Clemson, etc, etc, in close games.  They played LSU close in the 2nd round.  They know how to play when things get tight.  This isn't UNLV losing to Duke back in 92.

if the favorite is being bet by less than 2/3 of the people, then that means the line has been shaded toward the favorite... if more than 2/3 are betting the favorite, then the line has been shaded toward the dog...

however, i fully expect that if MSU covers there will be all sorts of posts (which i will never see, mind you) bashing the hell out of me...

we'll see, PK... i think UNC was coasting through the season and knew they had a great chance to get to this game... they've been playing at a different level in the tourney, and i don't see why MSU is any more of a threat than OU or Villanova... would MSU have come out of the Eastern half of the bracket?

i think it will come down to which guards dictate the game on both ends... who can handle the pressure of the other guards, and break down the pressure... i like what i see from Lawson and their ability to score from so many places... just don't think MSU will be able to keep up...

home crowd and coaching are the two factors that give MSU hope... but in terms of talent they are outmatched, and even though it doesn't always play out that way, talent wins out more often than not in big games...

i love the way MSU plays basketball... but i think the run ends tonight...

This thing about one team has heart is a joke.....Didnt Louiville have heart and what about NOVA?? Was it Syracuse that everyone said they have Heart and that it is not measurable?? These teams are not in the Championship game......they can keep their heart, ill take talent.....

and whats up with the slow, white, and unathletic power forward comment? anyone find that racist?

They have to be 36+ pts better than the sum of their parts last time, on this floor.  Oops forgot Suton didn't play he's worth a good 40 pt swing.

i just thought it was interesting nobody addressed this.

Are we saying that kansas, ville, uconn are worst than zags, ou and nova. ku is obviously better than the zags. ku wouldve won the game if they didnt choke in the end. ville is the overall #1 seed. and how do you think nova is better than uconn. mich st. went through a much harder schedule to get here than did unc.

All I heard this entire tournament was how UNC was getting way too much respect because they are UNC and Vegas knows people will lay money on them because of their name.  Then I hear how there is no way Michigan St. should be a #2 seed and they will lose in the 2nd round.  Some of these comments are hilarious.  Now all I am hearing is how UNC won by 35 earlier in the year and they have way more NBA players, blah, blah blah...This game has nothing to do with what happened in December.  Michigan St is a completely different team and playing with tons of confidence right now.  They have just knocked off 2 teams that very few thought they could and now they are playing for a national championship in front of a home crowd.  Finally, they have the best coach in the country and I can't wait to see how UNC reacts when Michigan St. punches them in the mouth.  Should be a good one!  I think the Spartans keep this very close, and if they win...look out Detroit!

I will lay 7 points after watching them pummel Mich St by 35 earlier in the year.  The crowd can't help them if UNC runs out to an early lead.  Even if the heels have a bad shooting night and State hangs around, still a good chance they win by 8.  More likely, they win by 15+.

Go tarheels.  Who will be cutting down the nets tonight?  The heels will.  The only question is by how much.  I think UNC comes out and plays their best game of the season because it's the last 40 minutes of college ball the starters are going to play.  This is a UNC team that could compete with the Thunder, Grizzlies, Twolves, Warriors, Kings, Clippers, and Pacers.  They are as loaded perhaps as any team I have seen before.  They play an NBA style of basketball and they will not stop raining 3's all night.  I see 100 points tonight.  MSU just can't score like they can.  Anybody who says anyone on the court for either team is unathletic is a moron.  These guys play ball for the two best teams remaining.  They all are athletic.  UNC has shooters for days.  Look for Hansborough, Ellington, Lawson and Green to all have 15-20 points.  After that, there's nothing MSU can do.
Gamebreaker23 says:

The worst analysis I've ever seen.  Goran Suton will be lucky to average 4ppg and 3rpg in the NBA.  more than likely he'll end up overseas.  Tyler Hansborough will have a solid 12 year career, no doubts about it.  He'll probably make an all-star team at some point.  You made a few valid points, but comparing Suton and Hansborough ruined everything you said.

Glad to see your on MSU as well. I was hoping you were. You nailed them vs. UCONN.

I've bet against MSU last two games, I will not get left off the wagon tonight...

I'm kicking myself for not getting involved after Davis and the guy next to him both picked Michigan State to pul the upset.  I never pay any attention at all when these guys speak, but this time I was watching, and they just sounded like two lemons trying to be the hero with the upset selection.

You guys obviously haven't seen Leon Powe play in the NBA.  Hansborough and Powe have very similar games except for one thing, Hansborough is a little better outside shooter.  Plus he shoots very well from the free throw line.  I guarantee Hansborough will be a solid NBA player, just like Leon Powe, if not a little better.  Maaaaybe he won't make an all-star team but he might because he obviously has the work ethic of a champion and remember one important thing...he plays for UNC and not Duke and UNC players always do good at the next level.  Same can not be said for Duke players.  Hansborough, all-star in 2015.  17ppg, 9rpg....long-term prop i'll take that 500,000 to 1 for a 10 bucks please so i can retire with 5 million in my pocket.  hansborough's the man, y'all can keep hatin.
