Split Title?

I would say the odds of a split title are about 1 in 1,000,000.

However, what would people think if Ohio St. beats Texas and Oklahoma beats Florida?  In that scenario, you'd have a National Champion (who perhaps shouldn't have even been in the game due to their neutral field loss to one-loss Texas) and you'd have a Fiesta Bowl Champion who USC beat by 32 points.

Would anybody here be tempted to vote USC number one should Ohio St. beat Texas?

I have big plays on Texas -8 and Florida -3, so I don't see the above scenario playing out.  I just wanted to hear everyone's thoughts.

BOL the rest of the bowl season!!  Jan. 8 is like unwrapping the last Christmas present and knowing you have to wait 11 months for the next gift

I forgot to throw Utah in the equation!  USC and Utah are going to be watching that NC game on January 8 thinking, "This system is garbage".

Utah is the only team with a chance to split it...USC has 0% chance

i don't even care what happens in Tx-OSU or OU-Florida... every AP voter has an obligation to put Utah at #1... they are undefeated... they crushed the team that spent the most weeks at #1 this year... they beat TCU, the team that knocked off the only other unbeaten bowl team... they beat Ore St, which knocked off USC, the team playing better football than anyone else at the end of the year...

i don't care if Utah is the best team... they ARE the #1 team, because their record and performance says they are... and the only way there will ever be a playoff system that keeps us from having to have these discussions is if every single AP voter puts Utah at #1... any AP voter who doesn't do that is a fucking loser and is keeping us from getting what we want...

Completely agree, ICE.  We can look at USC and say, "They're the best team right now" (which is what a playoff would show), but the current BCS system rewards the best "overall season".  This season, the team with the best overall performance was Utah.  They had come from behind victories at home against Oregon St. and TCU, and just thrashed Bama!

I don't think USC is the best team... always nice when you get to always play pretty much a home game for every bowl game.  How about USC travels across the country during the holidays and plays someone out east. Don't think the results would be quite the same.

S[party,

USC played Iowa in the 2002 Orange Bowl and won 38-14 ...

USC played Oklahoma in the 2004 Orange Bowl and 2on 55-19 ...

Is Miami, Florida far enough East to count??

sparty444 says:

Don't think Oklahoma and Iowa were playing close to home? were they?   How about they come play Florida in the Orange Bowl?
alwayson22 says:

They played Auburn on the road in 2003 when they were #5 and had Cadillac, Ronnie Brown, and Jason Campbell ... 23-0

They played Arkansas on the road in 2005 when they won the SEC West with McFadden and Felix Jones ... 50-14

Virginia on the road this year ... 52-7

Virginia Tech on the road in 2004 when Va Tech was in a New Years Day Bowl ... 38-17

Anymore, Sparty?

Oh wait ... one more.   Next year in Columbus Ohio ... USC by 20+!!!!

like i said... it doesn't matter who is the best team, or who is playing the best... they have set up a system this way, and if this is how they are going to set it up, then the AP voters need to show them why their system is fucked up!

they don't allow an automatic berth for non-BCS teams... but 3 times in 4 years a non-BCS team has jumped into the party and beat the shit out of one of the supposed power houses...

Utah is #1 this year... i don't care if Florida beats OU 55-0... Utah is #1, until they fix their fucked up system!  the right team needs to be rewarded if this is the bullshit they are gonna throw at us... until they get it right, they need to be punished accordingly... there should NOT be a consensus #1 team this year, no matter what!

This year is a perfect example of why there needs to be a playoff. USC could drill any team in the country this year. Unlike the B12 & SEC, they actually travel for some ooc games, which is why they don't stumble when going on the road for bowls.

I'm not even trying to be a USC honk here.  I'm just trying to point out the fallacy of the crappy BCS system.  There are only 12 games in the regular season, so you can only play a few non-conference games, most of which are scheduled several years in advance ... it's virtually impossible to determine a true champion without a playoff.
sparty444 says:
01/03/09 01:01AM
All 3 of those teams were not top 5 material partner...using Virginia as an example?

Didn't Auburn finish with 5 losses that year?

USC has an advantage at the Rose Bowl... a big advantage...if you can't admit that then your a waste of my time.

Florida-Miami-FSU have the same advantage in the Orange bowl.

with the trojans impressive win on the west coast and the pasting the utes put on the tide the arguement will be more heated than ever, and understandably so- for me,, i'll take a few days down time,  for me and the computer, then get right back to it,,work hard,,crunchin the numbers always searching for that final bit of info needed to make sure the call is headed to the "right side"

if their is any decency and conscience in any of those idiots who vote in the polls or run those ridiculous computers, they will vote utah as the national champion.they(utah) deserve that much, but what do you expect from fools who have a team playing for the national championship who lost heads up to a better team in their conference and made sure the best team in the nation never got back high enough in the polls to be considered because of their weak conference who is now 5-0 and have won the conference bcs championship

other than being from California why do you keep talking about USC??  They lost to Oregon St and barely beat Arizona.

Florida beat all teams significantly except a 1 point loss to Ole Miss that occurred from a blocked extra point.

Oklahoma beat every single team significantly except Texas.

I think you are one of the few that would vote for USC as national champs.  Winner of Florida/Okie are national champs.  I'm actually at the point where I'd like to see a playoff system just so USC fans can lose to a team like Texas, Okie or Florida.  Never get to a national championship and STFU.

STUPID TALK ???? The BCS system claims to have REMOVED margin of victory a few years back. IT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO FACTOR IN AT ALL.....I don't think USC deserves to play for the national title either. I think it should be Texas and Florida. when you win the best conference in america and beat Oklahoma on a neutral field ard are 1 second away from an undefeated season that is good enough for me. What I hate is the fact that supposedly margin of victory didn't matter ....but i guess it did after all. And for you to be talking about an ATS record as a point for who should be playing for a national title is the biggest example of stupid talk in this whole thread..........

refer says:
01/03/09 01:55AM

I tend to agree with most of your comments.......1 fyi the Virginia Tech game you refer to was played on a neutral site and yes VT was in a new years day bowl game that year they beat VT on a very controversial PI call as I said once again at a NEUTRAL SITE. When siting examples why USC plays a legit schedule I don't think neutral site games count.......what should be considered is that while USC was basically downgraded for playing a soft schedule now that the pac 10 is 5-0 and bowls this year how soft does the schedule look ? And how impressive are Oklahomas win over the following bowl game losers........Ok st, tex tech, Cincinnati and less than impressive Missouri........it is time we start worrying more about the quality of teams and less about the college logo on the side of the helmet. Apparently it will take a few more Boise St or Utah BCS wins to convince us they are good enough to be considered for a national championship......

hey displayer-- iam not from california-- i am from oklahoma, and a big ou fan. however, i retired from coaching football after 32 years and played this game at the highest level you can play at, so i think i can recognize at least a few things from my head- not my heart.by the way, ou has beaten usc only one time ever and have lost a total of one bcs games since its inception

USC is not the best team! WTF. They lost to Oregona State. Barely beat Arizona and Cal. Couldnt blow out on teams like UCLA and Arizona State which sucks like shit this year. Their margin of wins against good teams isnt that big. Almost stumble again Stanford again and what they beat an underrated Penn St by 14 points? Look at Oklahoma. They MURDERED 7 bowl teams. Last 5 games scoring 60+. They are 10-2 ATS. When you have stats like that then you are allowed to be talked as the #1 team and that is the reason why they are playing in the NC game. Stop with this stupid USC shit im so tired of it. Im a UT fan not OU fan but what is fact is fact and not stupid talk.
Ch33z says:
01/03/09 02:54AM

Learn how to read. I DID NOT say that the margin of victory or ATS counted toward the rankings. I did not say anything about the BCS standings or BCS system. What i said is that all of those should be considered when WE(the people) are talking about who should be the number team. Now you wonder why i say enough with the stupid talk.
Ch33z says:
01/03/09 02:58AM

yeah i think OU is going to lose too but even after the game 90% of the people will still think USC is still #1 lol.

UT gave USC their only non-conference loss since 2002, so I expect to hear some trash talk from Longhorn fans.  However, the early returns on the bowl season have shown the Big 12 South to be sorely lacking in defense.  Texas Tech and Oklahoma St.?  Both got punked.  What happened the last time "unstoppable" Oklahoma was undefeated and playing for the title?

Just call USC the IRS because they taxed that ass!

Oklahoma has lost four BCS Bowls in a row and are about to make it five in a row.

Ice4Blood says:

Ch33z... i won't argue that USC should be #1, even though i do think they would smoke any team out there if given the chance, on any field out there... and i am nowhere close to being a USC homer...

but i never argued that USC should be #1... what i want from you is an argument as to why Utah should NOT be #1... because based on the arguments you presented against USC, i think you are going to be hard-pressed to use that same logic against Utah...

and again... i am NOT a Utah homer... as a matter of fact... i hate Utah!  but they are the #1 team in college football this year, because they won the season... and by that, i mean... all of the BCS system proponents always argue that if we have a playoff, it gets rid of the importance of the regular season... well... Utah went undefeated in the regular season... nobody else did... they argue that the regular season IS the playoffs we are looking for... well then, Utah won the playoffs... and capped it by winning a BCS game...

so how is it possible for the team that WON the regular season (their version of the playoffs), and WON a BCS bowl game, is NOT the #1 team?

again... i do not give a shit how many points Florida beats Oklahoma by (or vice versa)... by THEIR RULES... Utah IS the #1 team... and anybody who votes otherwise has their head up their ass!
