Getting bigger....

Need some quality advice guys.

I don't have a problem in the sense that I need to lose weight.  I'm just the opposite - it remains a constant struggle for me to gain weight.  I'm 6'1" and around 145.  (Please save the jokes, I've heard all of em).

Seems like every commercial or advertisement or magazine is geared toward weight loss.  I've yet to find a quality program or service that can help me put on bulk weight - and keep it on.

I work 12 hour days.  I have 2 more hours on top of that for commute time.  (However, I only work 14 days per month).  My Shift I work goes like this: work 4 nights, off 3 days, work 3 days, off 1 day, work 3 nights, off 3 days, work 4 days, off 7 days.

I'm not concerned with adding lean muscle (I can burn the fat off with ease).  I'm strictly concerned with adding 40 to 60 lbs of bulk weight.

I will not use any type of steriods or drugs.

Any suggestions?

When I'm in a gaining phase, lots of pasta, rice, beans, cheese, red meat, bread, and piling on the sauces works for me.  If you want a protein shake to help out, Muscle Milk has a lot of fat in it and it tastes great.  Good luck.

Protein powder and "super food" shakes made with juice for taste. I made one with water today and almost hurled. Perhaps a carton of those EAS 45Gs protein drinks a day.......

They sell all the above at GNC.

Henry's suggestion is a good one as well

6'1" isn't really short either. I think I'm 5'11" 174.

How old are you, if you don't mind me asking? If you're 25 or under, you'll still fill out some......

When I was 18, I was 6'0", 155 lbs. I guess I'm bigger now, but not fat at all...

Are you young?

Drink 2 quarts of eggnog everyday for a month. You'll be there..... ;D

Not trying to be funny, but it's fattening as hell...

Well you need to gain that weight in a healthy way. Do not try and eat more bad fats and stuff that will kill you.

This site is very informative with a lot of practical advice that you can implement here and now. Link

Also i would like to mention that "nuts such as almond, walnut, hazel" are excellent sources to gain weight. Plus they are in the top end of healthy both in regards to fats and chemical combinents that fight disease, heart/cancer. Walnuts in particular is great. If you need to gain weight include them daily.

Also dark chocolate 70% and up. 500 or so cals in 100 gram. It is a 2fer. It is healthy and its only negative component the amount of cals is what you need.

You could also start drinking one class of red wine per day. That will add cals to your diet and improve health.

Never knew that. Interesting. I love dark chocolate.

Usually get that covered...

32, I bet you still fill out some naturally. Go to the GNC, one that has someone that looks like they actually work out, not one with a high school kid behind the counter. Ask them . They love to talk this stuff and are usually happy to "educate" you. They don't make commission, so there's no hidden agendas. They are just seemingly passionate about working out, etc.

I've been in 3 GNCs in a year at least and overheard a guy asking an employee about putting on weight. The customer wasn't made to feel embarrassed, and the employee was more enthusiastic talking to him than half my college professors...

Go buy the number 1 gainer protein. Iso mass by natures best. This is the only lactose free gainer. Its the only one that has worked good for me. Don't waste your money on cheap gainers.take 3 shakes a day. Gaining is way tougher than loosing.

atl - one word...

Calorie

How you want to look when you've reached your target weight is a whole different story but at 145, you are very, very underweight and I wouldn't even worry about the macronutrient (protein, carb, fat) proportion...just consume as much shit as you want.

The solution is actually not complicated. Most weight hard-gainers do not consume adequate daily calories. Do this:

To gain weight:

Training day:
total daily caloric intake requirement = bodyweight(lbs) x 20
145 x 20 = 2900 calories

Non-training day:
total daily caloric intake requirement = bodyweight(lbs) x 15
145 x 15 = 2175 calories

I cannot stress this enough...be consistent about this. This has to be a daily act of discipline and results will come. Make this a part of your life from now on and treat it as important as breathing and I guarantee you, you will gain weight. From now on, everything you eat or drink(shake and such), take note of the total calorie and protein. Here is a list of food I dug up somewhere i from when I was bulking up back in the day. I'm talking about 15 years ago but same shit...

I recommend you train at least 4 times a week. This will make your protein synthesis more active.

Ignore all the bullshit supplement products out there except for two. A few more may work but for gaining weight you only need two at this point. I will only recommend Whey Protein Isolate and a dietary fiber supplement (very important to push stuff down especially in the beginning when you're  loading your body with calories, your stomach will likely get upset but don't worry only lasts a couple of days to a week at most).

Anyway, I don't want to bombard you with tons of info..the important thing is you start working on your goal. Do it now bro.

Hit the buffet restaurants country style. usually country food... a lot of times has starchy fatty, but tasty foods.

Here is a weight gain diet that worked really well for me a couple of years ago. This was developed for me by a sports dietician based on my macro-nutrient readings (via blood tests), but I reckon it could work for anyone.

Breakfast =  protein shake (skim milk, skim milk powder, 30g whey protein powder, 1 whole egg, 2 frozen bananas, 1 cup rolled oats, 1 tablespoon Ovaltine)

Mid morning=  small tub (200g) low fat fruit yogurt + fruit / breakfast bar or some cheese and crackers

Lunch = "Bean salad" (150g tin of mixed beans, 200g tin tuna, half a red onion chopped, half a tomato chopped, tablespoon pesto, tablespoon sesame oil)

Late afternoon = same meal as mid morning

Dinner = Chicken breast / piece of fish / steak + two servings of mixed vegetables

Post workout = same protein shake as for breakfast minus the rolled oats

Supper (if you can manage it) = some fruit

* along with the above meals this plan included drinking a litre of calorie containing fluid every day, ie some fruit juice ect. Fruit juice is actually a very good way of adding easy calories to any diet and is one of the first things any dietician will tell people to cut out when they're trying to LOSE weight.

I went from 73kg to 87kg (or in American speak, 161 pounds to 191 pounds) over a period of about nine months on the above diet and had loads of energy in the weight room.

Bear in mind that you're body fat % will increase on a diet like this but that is part and parcel of adding muscle to your frame

Dude, I'm 45. I just went to the Doc a few days ago.

For 18 months. I started at 182 first visit to that Doc. and lack of appetite and continued 4+ miles walking out a day anyways......Got to 173-174, and was the same exact weight till 2 months ago. That's how long it's been since I've seen this particular doc.......They weigh me, blood pressure, etc.... Well I get on the scale and 2 months ago 173......3 days ago-205 pounds. I about fell down . I'm thin , I swear. About 8 guys from here have met me in person and can vouch that I am thin.........I'm a protein freak (powdered whey protein), and anti nausea pills I asked for from my fucking back pain brought my appetite back.....lot of red meat.

....that and the 150-200 pushups a day, thats no coincidence, I started 2 months ago. I don't do them all at one time, but 30 usually every 10-20 mins till I hit that #.  I took ten days off before the Doc appt 3 days ago. Bizarre.......

32 pounds in 2 months is insane. I thought I was pregnant. I still don't believe it. Muscle must weigh a shit load more than fat or anything else....Not bragging, but chest am arms are obviously bigger. Gut is same.

32+ lbs in 2 months?

(according to doc 3 times tested. They didn't believe it either. I was 173 last Dec 1st.   I told someone in here that I could lose and gain weight at will, but 32 additional pounds should take 3.5-4 months along with bad diet. I eat healthy. It's jamming the pushup bars...daily.

I can't do lower body till back fixed. Dude. I hear ya. It's unbelievable. Slight gut, but nothing at all, really.

I still don't believe it.

wow dennis pretty tough on me considering you have my age wrong and date of when i joined completely incorrect.  you joined in 2006 which was 3 years after i did.  in fact my name was made simply as a spin off from when i posted winners for years in mlb on another site and it got shut down so some of us moved here.  but the name wiseguy was taken so i came up with something different that went along the same lines.

i simply made a suggestion to my friend atl, thats all.  if you dont like it or want to get in bed with mugg, thats none of my business.  i dont believe taking creatine is the healthiest way to go about weight gain.  i am no expert in anything nor have i ever professed to be, u and others put words in my mouth that i have never said.

i made a suggestion and coming from someone who is in the industry, has been in the industry for 11 years, played collegiate sports, has a cousin in mlb, has a father and uncle who are professional bodybuilders and has professional people around him daily in regards to health and wellness, i stated not one i know would suggest creatine is his answer.  If you dont like it, thats your opinion. Like luv suggested, lets not forget what atl did say at the end of his initial post.

recommending someone to use creatine because they are skinny is not the alternative, everyone may have different views but because of the side effects of this substance that one can endure it would not be my professional recommendation nor that of many others i consult with in the health and fitness industry to use this as atl's solution for weight gain.  Lift more weights, get more protein in your diet through food. I played ball with guys who abused the use of creatine and had some of the side effects that is forewarned when taking this product.  Some complained of rapid heart beats as well, considering creatine does speed up the heart rate.  You can simply drink more water and be more active to increase your energy levels, all this stuff out there now i do not promote.  He wants to gain weight, not be a body builder or a professional athlete.  He should do it the proper way.. rock on

Though creatine is a protein which occurs naturally in the body, and has been classified by manufacturers and sellers as devoid of side effects, increasing creatine content within the body is not entirely free of short and long term problems which the user might suffer from.

Creatine has been known to cause mild to serious side effects among users. Its use may lead to cramps, stomach upsets and vomiting. Also, due to its property, Creatine absorbs water from cells which results in increasing the water mass of muscles, leading to dehydration, and obesity. Physicians are of the opinion that due to this dehydration, users may suffer from mood swings, increased anger and depression. In fact users have claimed that depression levels dropped among them when they stopped taking creatine. Users are thus advised to drink lots of water to stop dehydration.

thisguyiswise says:
02/19/10 05:31PM

mong serious side effects creatine causes kidney, and gastrointestinal disorders. Users have also reported increased anxiety, acne, male breast formation (Gynecomastia), and a reduction in penis size and hair loss. Gastrointestinal complications have been commonly reported among users of creatine supplements. Moreover, scientific studies have proved that increase in body mass from creatine use can be attributed to water retention by muscle.

Creatine use among health freaks is still under a lot of debate. Critics have claimed that the Loading Phase involves a lot of creatine intake, which the body is unable to process. This leads to excretion, and thus wastage of creatine. Moreover research on the benefits of creatine has been limited both in terms of number of research reports and duration of research questions as to how creatine affects teenaged users, elders and pregnant or lactating mothers have remained unanswered due to lack of conclusive research in this field. It is important to note here that not all creatine supplements have obtained the FDA approval. FDA approval to Creatine is termed as "loose" by many industry experts, since though creatine is approved, a lot of marketers add more chemicals to pure creatine to lessen side effects and increase effectiveness. For example, one seller alleges that its product does not get converted to creatinine in the human stomach, a compound which is nullify all expected benefits from ingesting creatine. The company claims that it does this by addition of chemicals to prevent conversion of creatine into creatinine. The effects of such additives on the human body haven't been studied. Users are thus advised to always consult a doctor before taking creatine.

02/18/10 10:38PM
no offense, but get a clue, its not natural, its a supplement, and has side effects. i like my kidneys and a healthy diet, drinking lots of water, and an exercise routine is natural, creatine is not smart ass.  Educate yourself first, i have been in the industry for years, you post on covers for a living

What exactly is or our "your" years of experience in the industry???

Facts below, that most all in here already knew except you......
___________________________________________________
Creatine is, and always has been, a natural component of skeletal muscle.

The only reason that creatine may seem like something new is a recent

boom in scientific research in the area since the early 1990s. In a

sense, creatine was rediscovered when world-class athletes became wise

to the option of utilizing it to enhance their physical performance...............
.............In truth, however, creatine was identified as an indispensable part of

skeletal muscle some time ago. Nearly two centuries ago (1835)........
...........In fact, meat and fish are the richest natural sources of creatine. Carnivores therefore, receive their creatine directly via dietary channels.......
..........When dietary creatine intake is restricted (or entirely absent) the body can produce creatine from amino acids made available during the digestion of foods.....Therefore, in one way or another, creatine is acquired from our diets.

The production of new creatine (synthesis) principally takes place in

the liver and kidneys
______________________________________________________

Above "thisguyisadolt" , I quote yourself as saying creatine is unnatural and harmful to the kidneys, when in fact, it is produced naturally there as our bodies need it naturally in our diets. I believe that was right after you told Henry how much of an expert that you were and as a 26 year old, have been in the industry for "years".

I learned this shit in high school physiology..........

you have the classic ectomorph physique, and if you're 6'1", 145 that means you're an extreme ectomorph. I hate to say never, but you will most likely not gain 40-50 lbs of solid mass unless you do use roids, and lots of it. if you eat a proper diet and workout regularly the best you can hope for is probably 20-25 lbs, and that would take a year or longer.

live with the fact that god gave you what you have and consider it a blessing. you said save the jokes cuz you've heard them all... that's probably why you want to change your body and improve your self image. but the same people who were making fun of you back then would probably kill to have your body now(but you probably heard that a lot, too)

I think a realistic goal would be adding 15-20 lbs. I know that's not what you want to hear, but once you start getting serious about fitness and nutrition you will immediately feel a change and understand it's more important to feel good than look good. I would also recommend doing it the natural way. you have a rigorous work schedule and it would be foolish to jeopardize your health and livelihood to impress some random strangers.
