Could get ugly for Georgia this year

Anyone who has followed my posts in the past on this board knows I'm a big Georgia fan, but I'm also a pragmatic sports better.  And, just like any good bettor, I never play "homer" for my own team.

With that in mind, I seriously think that this season could start really ugly for Georgia. The early schedule is murder, and they could legitimately start the season 2-3, or even worse. The schedule does get easier, though, and they will probably make a run and end up with a respectable season, though not 10 wins.

Players lost:There's no getting around this one.  Georgia lost their #1 QB, RB, and WR, two of which were top-10 picks in the draft.  Those would be devastating losses to most programs, but for Georgia, it might have actually helped their team chemistry.

The loss that will end up hurting the most is actually Mohamed Massaquoi at WR, since the starting QB this year will be Joe Cox, a 5-year player in the DJ Shockley mold.  Also, there is no firm starting RB coming back, but the top 4 players, while not being Knowshon, are still excellent runners, and will have an offensive line with at least 7 players with starting experience coming back.

Schedule:  This is Georgia's killer hurdle for this season.  Much was made about Georgia's schedule last year, but this years' lineup should actually be more difficult than last year.  They face 7 bowl teams from last year, and in addition to their always-difficult SEC lineup, they play 3 of their 4 non-conference games against teams from BCS conferences.  (And not patsys like Stanford or UConn.)

Prediction: ATS: 5-6

Straight up: Anywhere between 6-6 and 10-2

See schedule breakdown in the next post.

No way South Car beats Georgia.  They run for 1 YPC any time they play a team with any kind of D Line.

Nice Thread Brother

I think you are bing way too hard on your Boys ....

8-4 at worst  10-2 at best IMO

The only games I would really worry about are

at Oklahoma St ..-3/+3 . Game seems like a coin toss, but Ga could run wild on a cowboys D that plays little if no defense at all

at Arkansas  -4/+3   again game might be a coin toss , but I am not sure the Hogs and their piss poor defesne will be able to stop the Bulldogs

LSU   -4    should be another tight one but Georgia seems like the winner in this spot

at Tennessee  +3/-3     should be a tough spot coming off the LSU Win ...I would give the Vols the W in this spot

*Florida   +14    Just take the loss here

Kentucky -6   agree that most people are too down on the Wildcats this year .. I see alot of talent on UK and this game might be too close for your comfort but Georgia should win

at Georgia Tech -3/+3   50/50 game ,

Richt is a fantatsic coach and should have Georgia in Top 10 mode again

Georgia obviously doesn't have some of the fire power that they had last year but they also don't have the expectations they had last year and that is a blessing for a UGA team that has thrived in the shadow spot (Florida) of the SEC East. There offensive line is very good and despite losing Moreno the running backs are solid as well. Georgia should be able to run the ball against most teams this season. Their defense should also be improved after last years debacle as Willie Martinez is now co-defensive coordinator with John Jancek and that will make the defense better before the season even starts. The big question will be who will step up at QB. Can Joe Cox fill the role or will it be a repeat of Joe Tereshinski III? If Cox can't get it done will Murray be able to step in and do a reasonably good job much like Stafford did his Freshman year. To me the answer to the Bulldog season lies at QB. Richt won't ask him to do much but Cox and company won't be able to hide behind the running game either. IF Cox or Murray steps up this UGA team could be a surprise.

That Arkansas game really sets up well for the Razorbacks.  That's a tough scheduling break.

That really is a brutal six-game stretch to open the season.

nostra, double, thorpe, no8, betATL, mws    I'm glad you guys think more highly of my team than I apparently do. I've been bred on the Larry Munson/Vince Dooley diet of eternal pessimism, so maybe that's why I'm so nervous about this year.

I'm sure my predictions do look odd... I have UGA beating OSU and Florida, but losing to S. Carolina and Ga. Tech?  I think there are valid reasons for those picks, though.  We'll see how it works out during the season!

nostra: Owens and Sturdivant are ready to go.  Our O-Line should be the strength of the offense this year, with 7 guys returning that have significant starting experience.  The interior of the D-Line will be good, but the DE spot is still short on potential playmakers.

Yes, Ealy is qualified.    The only signee that didn't qualify was Dexter Moody, and he was released from his commitment a couple of months ago.  Not sure what happened to him.

thorpe:  maybe it's unfounded, but that game against S. Carolina is the only L I have written in pen on my prediction sheet.  They always play Georgia close, and have 9 days to prepare after a game in nearby Raleigh.  Georgia, on the other hand, will have played an away game in Oklahoma in the 100-degree labor-day weekend heat, taken a late night flight back to Georgia, and will probably get back in at about 2:00 AM or so.  They had a similar deal last year when they played Arizona State... remember how the next week worked out for them?  (Hint: They played Alabama.)

no8:  Agree to disagree, but Mohamed was the best WR on the team in terms of experience last year.  Green might have more pure talent, but Mohamed was still the #1 WR for a reason.  He pulled most of the coverage initially, which allowed Green (playing in the #3 spot for most of the year) to get open on some routes on the other side of the field.  Teams were doubling up MoMass, which freed Green up.  I don't doubt Green will still be great this year, but we'll see how he handles having to run the #1 routes and getting doubled and tripled-up on every play.

mws: Yeah, not sure how that schedule timing turned out so badly for UGA.  I think this will be one of those seasons like 2007 that started very poorly, then the team got it turned around by the end of the season.

DGlaze91 says:

I think Okie State takes it to the Dawgs. High powered offense that is hard to be stopped with 3 playmakers (Robinson, Hunter, Bryant). Add that to the fact that Cox has little big game experience.

I do however think UGA improves as the season progresses, as Joe Cox and Caleb King fit in to their new positions. Stafford and Moreno are hard to replace, but King and Cox (even Murray/Gray and Samuel) can take over and be good replacements.

DGlaze91 says:
07/27/09 02:50AM

I mean to say as Cox and King fit as the new starters for their respective positions.

By the way who's going to be the other starter at WR? Michael Moore? Kris Durham? Tavarres King?

What I like about UGA is that they have very solid and deep O and D lines. Their 2 deep on O-line would start on most NCAA teams.

bigirondawg, always a pleasure reading your insights and post here on covers. I also am a huge SEC guy with LSU being my alma mater. LSU once again is loaded with talent on both sides of the ball with a mix of veterans and newbies. Les Miles and his staff have done a great job of recruiting and keeping the cubbards loaded. First glance at LSU's schedule would have you believe that they SHOULD be 4-0 heading into mAthens to meet your Bulldogs. Washington, Vandy, ULL and Miss St should have them at 4-0. Then the brutality sets in. At Georgia, home to Florida, home to Auburn and then away at Ole Miss and Alabama. How will Jordan Jefferson handle the Athens crowd? Will the returning LSU players remember the ass kickin Georgia put on them in Death Valley? LSU should have no problems scoring points this year. Charles Scott, Keiland Williams, Mr. Halliday and some very good WR's should be able to move the ball behind returninmg Ciron Black who anchors that big offensive line. A new defensive coordinator and tons of talent on the defensive side of the ball should make this LSU defense just as dangerous as they have been in the past. Chad Jones anchors what should be a highly ranked defense. Once again I look forward to some really good battles in the SEC. Would a 11-1 be out the question? maybe not. More like 10-2 probably, but we shall see.  Look forward to seeing you during the season.

BID, My run thru of the schedule has UF as a loss, and OSU and GaT suspect. I like the Dawgs shots versus Spurrier and Petrino. Not sure Jefferson is ready for prime time @ LSU so I like us in that one too. The rest look like routine wins. Don't see as much in Ky as you do.

do you like the Over in the 1st game vs Ok St? On the road vs a great offense, Georgia will be hard pressed to keep them under 31 pts....

I think that Tennesssee game will be tooth and nail....

If georgia falls ahead into the lookahead trap and loses vs Vandy, do you still think they beat Florida, even with 2 weeks to prepare??

chizik is a pretty good coach and auburn will be ready to play for sure....i'll have to see the line, but anything over +14 and aubrun would deserve a serious look....

good stuff bro

DGlaze:  You could be right... OSU does have the tools to put up a big number.  Joe Cox does has shown that he can perform in pressure situations, however.  In 2006, which was both his and Stafford's freshman year, Stafford stunk up the place in the Georgia/Colorado game.  Cox came in late in the 4th quarter and engineered a game-winning TD to win the game 14-13.  He has only played sparingly since 2006, but that one game showed us what we need to know about handling the pressure.

Petelapot:    LSU is my #2 favorite team... love that Golden Band from Tigerland.  Last year's game was a total fluke for Georgia...  I don't know when I've seen so many lucky plays go in our favor.  I don't want to admit it, but I think the Tigers might just get their revenge this year.  Les Miles could find a way to lose if we let him, though.

Atlanta, jwheels:  I don't expect anybody to believe or agree with me when I say we'll beat Florida... until the day after we do it.

nc1capper:  Yeah, that opener will tell us alot about UGA's potential.

Train69:  I don't know about the Over... have to see the total.   Georgia's defense will be much improved, and they held a very similar Ok St. squad to 14 points when they came to Athens in 2007.

If there's one thing I can guarantee you, it's that Georgia will not look past Vandy to Florida.  Besides the bye week, every Ga. player will remember the scare they gave us last year, 2 years ago, and the smackdown they laid on us 3 years ago in Sanford Stadium.

King Q:  According to Wikipedia, Fred Gibson was on the practice roster for a CFL team in 2008.  Not exactly the arc he was hoping his career would take, I'm sure.

Don't get me wrong, I hope Georgia goes 10-2 and goes to another BCS game... which certainly could happen if the right pieces fall into place.  I just have to admit, though, that the chances of that happening this year seem more distant than usual.

BID, watch for that LSU/ Florida game in December. Last time Florida came to Baton Rouge 2 years ago LSU physically put a ass kickin on Tebow and the rest of the Gators. It was one of the most physically dominating games I've seen as a LSU fan. As physical as they were LSU had to convert every 4th down play in the 4th qtr to pull out a win. I think Tebow will have this one circled on his calender. BTW when Florida plays Tennessee take Florida and the over for as much as you can get !!!

There is zero chance (I repeat... z-e-r-o chance) that Mark Richt is on

the hot seat at any time soon.  Even with a poor season this year,  Mark Richt has created "glory years" at Georgia that have surpassed those of the 1980's.  There has been no national championship (yet), but the program has been consistently better year in and year out than it's ever been before.

Not only that, but Richt has built up a massive amount of "political capital" in Athens because he's a good guy who does things the right way.  He's not only respected by the Bulldog Nation, he's loved by many.  It will take more than 1 bad year to erase all of that.

Willie Martinez is another story... it won't take much to toss him out on his ass.  It's important to note, though, that the defense saved Georgia in this game on multiple occasions.  (One possession started inside the 20 and resulted in a FG, and another short-field possession resulted in no points at all.)  The culprit in the Ok. St. game was Georgia's offense.

Give the 'Pokes their due, too... they played well, and were just the better team on the field yesterday.

westcoastTrojan says:

Richt wont be going anywhere, unless the FSU job opens up.

But Richt is overrated. Georgia should really be playing for NC's. They recruit their ass off, yet always fall way short.

Richt is one of the good guys who gets by off his good guy reputation, not his coaching skills.

lemonsky says:
09/06/09 11:25AM
The Florida State job is Jimbo Fisher's when Bowden retires.

Maybe Richt would go to the U (his alma mater, he backed up Jim Kelly) after Randy Shannon inevitably gets canned. But in all honesty, I think Richt wants to stay put.

Hopefully, Studivant's injury was minor and he'll return next week, but Joe Cox just looked gassed. Some of those throws had me scratching my head. Maybe when he's fully recovered next week against USCeast, we'll see what mettle he has against that stout D.

fts, winning - Any D-coordinator who can make Jonathon Crompton look like freakin' Peyton Manning is living on borrowed time.

Richt won't say it out of courtesy during the season, but Willie Martinez is already likely to be gone.  The only thing that might save his job at this point is winning our last 6 games and not giving up more than 17 points in any game the rest of the year... and I'm not sure I would want that, as much as I'd like the performance.  Georgia's PPG average has gone up every year since Martinez took over the defense in 2005.  PPG allowed by Georgia's defense:
2005: 16.4 PPG
2006: 17.6 PPG
2007: 20.2 PPG
2008: 24.5 PPG
2009 YTD: 30.67 PPG

Bumping... basically to point out that I had Georgia 3-3 at this point... (bows).  I picked the wrong 3 wins and 3 tossups/losses, but 3-3 is still 3-3.

I stand by the rest of my picks from here on out, except for flip-flopping Auburn and Kentucky.

At this point, anything from 5-7 to 8-4 still falls into the realm of "probable."

I've seen, in this and many other venues over the last 2 days, lots of overreaction to this one game. First of all, it's just one game, and contained 2 teams with some of the biggest questions of any top 20 teams.  The teams will continue to change and (hopefully) improve after this game, and as the year goes on.  The old saying goes that your team improves the most from game 1 to game 2, so we'll see how each team does in their next contest.

Invariably, a few very vocal Georgia fans are going super-negative, and understandably so.  We're not used to seeing Georgia be the second-best team on the field... and it's not a bad thing when it upsets us so much.  It's important to try to keep perspective, though.

Not to pick on you in particular, fts, but I think that our OL did not get manhandled during the game.  If you go back and watch the game again, our pass blocking was very good, if not excellent.  Joe Cox had more than 6 seconds to throw many times.  The run blocking wasn't as good, but was generally very competent, though not dominating.

On the other side of the field, OSU's defense appears to be improved, but I don't think they'll go undefeated.  Zac Robinson threw at least 3 INT's, and 1 that should have been a Pick-Six.  The fact that our defense couldn't catch balls that hit their hands doesn't mean that Texas or Oklahoma's defenders won't be able to catch them, either.

At the beginning of the season, I thought we would go between 8-4 and 7-5, and I still think that.  We'll see how it works out.

He and his crew have not done a great job lately imo. GT game second half =terrible coaching/lack of adjustments. pitiful. gonna be a long season.
